I didn’t dream of leading AI-driven research in Europe, Dr. Adeogun

Dr. Ramoni Adeogun, an Associate Professor at Aalborg University, Denmark, has said that he never dreamt he would be one of those leading Artificial Intelligence-driven researchers in Europe.

Dr. Adeogun, who hails from Agosasa in Ogun State, said he is also managing the technical program of the €6.8m European-funded CENTRIC project which aimed to revolutionize how humans connect to wireless networks.

Speaking in a phone chat, Dr. Adeogun said his journey from a Nigerian village to a global stage of Europe’s AI and wireless communications research, highlighted the need for more investment in AI and telecommunications research in Nigeria.

Dr. Adeogun said he is putting the country on the global technology map despite limited resources while growing up.

He stated that his research has gained international recognition, focusing on wireless networks, artificial intelligence, and next-generation communications (6G)—key areas that would shape the future of global connectivity.

According to him, “Coming from Agosasa, I never imagined I would one day be leading AI-driven research in Europe. Nigeria has immense talent, and with the right mindset and opportunities, we can compete on the world stage. I hope my story inspires young Nigerians to dream big and push boundaries.

“I am proudly flying the Nigeria flag. My achievements are a testament to Nigerian excellence in science and technology. My work is contributing to shaping policies, influencing industry leaders, and keeping Europe at the forefront of 6G innovation.

“My journey proves that Nigerians are making global waves in AI and telecommunications. This is a call to young Nigerians that the future of technology has no borders, and our nation has the talent to lead. Nigeria must invest in AI and Telecom Research.”

300,000 euro grant to boost Nigeria, Europe trade ties

The European Union (EU) has launched the Eurocham Nigeria Institutional Development Support, a €300,000 three-year grant aimed at strengthening the secretariat of the European Chamber of Commerce (Eurocham) Nigeria, in expanding its advocacy efforts and enhancing external engagement for its members.

The grant, announced yesterday during Eurocham’s 25th Annual Stakeholders Conference in Lagos, forms part of the EU’s broader commitment to supporting trade and investment between Europe and Nigeria. It is designed to bolster the organisation’s capacity to engage with local governments, policymakers, and business stakeholders, ultimately fostering a more conducive business environment.

EU’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, underscored the significance of the grant in strengthening trade relations between the EU and Nigeria.

“A highlight of 2024 that I would like to underscore is the approval of a three-year grant to the tune of €300,000, which we awarded to Eurocham last year.

This financial support will allow the Chamber to strengthen its Secretariat’s administrative capacity and allow for further expansion of external activities and advocacy work on behalf of its members,” Mignot stated.

He emphasised the EU’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Eurocham Nigeria, highlighting the importance of strong governance, effective coordination with EU Member States and partnerships with bilateral chambers.

“By building on what has been achieved so far, we pave the way for even greater opportunities in key areas like trade, investment, and infrastructure development. It bears repeating that the EU remains Nigeria’s biggest trading partner by a large margin, as well as one of the main sources of foreign direct investment and development financing,” he noted.

The EU’s support aligns with its Global Gateway Strategy, a four-year initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure development across Africa, with Nigeria set to feature prominently. According to Mignot, the strategy is expected to bring increased investment into key sectors such as transportation, digital transformation, and renewable energy.

“In alignment with the EU Global Gateway Strategy, we look forward to greater visibility for transformative projects such as the Omi Eko water transportation initiative or the scaling up of our commitment to digital skills, e-governance, together with support to the deployment of 90,000 km of fiber-optic cables across the country pursued by the government of Nigeria,” he said.

He further highlighted opportunities in the agricultural and renewable energy sectors, local vaccine manufacturing, and sustainable transportation, calling on Eurocham to play a crucial role in fostering investments.

“Investments in the agricultural and renewable sectors, local manufacturing of vaccines, and sustainable transportation are similarly important objectives for which we count on the Chamber to play an active role in identifying opportunities, aggregating investors, and advocating for a conducive business environment,” Mignot added.

The €300,000 grant is expected to enable Eurocham Nigeria to expand its membership base, strengthen its advocacy role, and support European businesses looking to invest in Nigeria, further solidifying the EU’s position as a strategic economic partner to the country.

    • Bundesliga: Leverkusen’s title tilt faces AFCON challenge

League leaders Bayer Leverkusen’s bid for a debut Bundesliga title is likely to hinge on how well Xabi Alonso’s side account for their Africa Cup of Nations absences.

Unbeaten Leverkusen sit four clear of second-placed Bayern, who have a game in hand, but need to do without the AFCON-bound Odilon Kossounou, Edmond Tapsoba and Amine Adli.

A fourth, Nigeria striker Victor Boniface, was set to make his AFCON debut but injured his groin in training and will be out until April after undergoing surgery.

The tournament starts today  and runs until February 11.

That period includes crucial league fixtures at home to Bayern and away at fourth-placed RB Leipzig, as well as a German Cup quarter final with in-form Stuttgart.

Alonso’s side have won 22 and drawn three of 25 games this season, thanks in large part to their African contingent.

  • Europe home of African footballers

    Europe home of African footballers

Over the years, African players have stunned Europe with the skills and qualities they possess. In light of recent research, we have over 500 African players who play their professional football in Europe. David Bolarinwa in this article analyses the influence achievements of notable African players in Europe.

African players have grown into the competition of showing their in-born talents in the spotlight and some have gone into the good records of their clubs or the league in which they played.

The intensity got real when George Weah in 1995 won the biggest individual award, the Ballon D’ Or, becoming the only African player to win the prestigious award, coming close to winning the award again was Senegalese ace, Sadio Mane who was announced second runner-up in 2022.

Didier Drogba came fourth in the 2007 edition while Samuel Eto’o who finished 5th in 2009 was nominated 10 times for the award in his career. Mohammed Salah, the Egyptian prince, came fifth in the 2022 edition of the award.

Some notable Africans in European Major Leagues and their achievements.

    Premier League

The Premier League is seen as a Greenland where many African players want to show their skills and hope to have a successful spell. Here are some notable African players who succeeded in the Premier League and Africa.

    Mohammed Salah

Topping the chat would have to be no one else than the Egyptian prince himself, recording 137 goals in 218 league games for Liverpool, having three Golden Boots to his name. In 2018 he became the only Liverpool player to win the Puskas award.

The 2017/18 season saw a different turn as Salah became the first player in Premier League history to score 32 goals in a 38-game campaign.

Salah was the fastest player to reach 100 goals in the history of Liverpool joining Fowler, Steven Gerrard, and Michael Owen on the exclusive list

Recounting his successes would not be complete without adding the fact that the 31-year-old won the African Best Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018 and is the leading goal scorer in Egypt recording over

    Didier Drogba

Known for his aerial prowess and blistering shot, Dodoer Drogba is one of the most feared forwards in the world for several years.

The Ivorian striker had 164 goals to his name in a Chelsea shirt. Unquestionably one of the greatest African footballers of all time.

Didier Drogba is a living legend in the African football world, winning the African Best Player of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2009 respectively, As an Ivory Coast international between 2002 and 2014, Drogba captained the national team from 2006 until he retired from the Ivory Coast team and is the nation’s all-time top goalscorer with 65 goals from 105 appearances.

    Yaya Toure

Starting his elite football career in Barcelona in 2007 where he won La Liga twice and the 2008-09 Champions League, Yaya Toure known for his surging midfield runs made him a big-money target for Manchester City, playing over 230 Premier League games for City, he paid back every penny they spent, with interest.

Stopping Toure wasn’t an easy task because of his ability to run with the ball and confidence to keep the ball and at his peak he rattled in no fewer than 20 league goals from the middle of the field.

Yaya Toure is regarded as one of the greatest African players of all time as was voted African Footballer of the Year for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, only Samuel Etoo has the same stat in African football.

    Nwnakwo Kanu

Nigerian legend who won the FA Cup for Portsmouth in 2008 scoring the game’s only goal in the first half and winning the African Player of the Year twice in 1996 and 1999 respectively.

    Sadio Mane

Before leaving Liverpool Mane won six major trophies, the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and UEFA Super Cup with the Reds. He is also an inspiration for his country as they won their maiden Africa Cup of Nations triumph earlier in 2022.

African players in other notable European leagues

    Victor Osimhen (Serie A)

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has been the headline news in the Serie A since winning the Scudetto for Napoli in the 2022/23 season breaking the jinx of 33 years in a 1-1 draw against Udinese.

    Victor Boniface (Bundesliga)

Another Nigerian striker who has turned hot for Bayer Leverkusen this season, winning the Rookie of the Month three times in a row scoring over 10 goals this season in all competitions including the Europa Champions League.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Premier League & Olympique Marseille)

Gabonese striker Aubameyang rattled 68 goals throughout 128 games against the Gunners. His movements, quality in finding space, and fine finishing made him one of the most dangerous forwards in the division for several years in a row.

His best performances came in the 2018/19 season when his 22-goal haul put him in a three-way African tie for the Golden Boot with two of the players still to come.

However, Aubameyang now plays his professional football in Olympique Marseille having 8-goals to his name. He has scored more than 300 goals in his football career.

To cap it all Aubameyang was named African Footballer of the Year in 2016, showing his excellence in the national team as well.

With all of these great African players mentioned, it is surely safe to say Europe has been a good landing stage for African football.

Arsenal plot long stay at EPL summit

Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League with ambitions to stay there as they host Wolves this weekend while champions Manchester City play faltering Tottenham.

Newcastle take on Manchester United in a clash of two teams with high ambitions of their own while Chelsea face Brighton, still searching for consistency.

Arsenal’s last-gasp 1-0 win at Brentford last week, which took them back to the top of table, was their fifth Premier League victory by a single goal this season.

The Gunners lack the fluidity they showed in the 2022⁄23 campaign and attacking numbers are down but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes they are now better equipped to win the league.

“Perfect, pretty football is unlikely to win the league unless it’s combined with a doggedness and resilience,” he said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Arsenal are better this year in these areas and the football will come in due course.”

But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports pundit alongside Neville, believes Mikel Arteta’s team need to win games more convincingly.

“If Arsenal continue how they are, if this is the Arsenal we’re going to see this season, I don’t think they can win the league,” he told Sky.

He added: “So many games are going to the wire and sometimes that can go against you…. Those games that finish 1-0 can easily go 1-0 the other way.”

Arsenal smashed Lens 6-0 in the Champions League in midweek in a reminder of what can happen when everything clicks.

Elsewhere, early pacesetters Tottenham desperately need to arrest their slide after three straight defeats but champions Manchester City are their next port of call.

Ange Postecoglou’s team, unbeaten in their first 10 games, have developed the costly habit of letting leads slip – losing to Chelsea, Wolves and Aston Villa despite scoring first each time.

Postecoglou is grappling with a lengthy list of absentees and suffered another blow with the loss of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, expected to be out until February after suffering a serious ankle injury against Villa.

City last week showed a chink in their armour, failing to win at home in any competition for the first time this year when they were held 1-1 by Liverpool.

But Erling Haaland notched his 50th Premier League goal in just his 48th game at the Etihad – obliterating Andy Cole’s record – and this week became the quickest player to 40 Champions League goals with his strike against RB Leipzig.

City will be confident normal order can be resumed at home.

Leverkusen  vs. Dortmund:  Bayern hunters battle in Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen welcome Borussia Dortmund on Sunday with the hosts sitting clear atop the Bundesliga table, having dropped just two of a possible 36 points to start the season.

Although only two points ahead of a Harry Kane-powered Bayern Munich, Leverkusen are already a whopping ten points in front of Dortmund, with only 12 matches played.

While many have credited manager Xabi Alonso for giving Leverkusen’s long-suffering fans hope of adding to a sparse trophy cabinet, a shrewd summer recruitment drive has also set them up for success.

Using the proceeds of Moussa Diaby’s sale to Aston Villa, Leverkusen brought in striker Victor Boniface, winger Jonas Hofmann, midfielder Granit Xhaka, while Alex Grimaldo joined from Benfica on a free.

Alonso hailed the summer additions’ “football intelligence”, telling AFP and other media in an interview “we knew they were going to have an almost instant influence on our game”.

“We have signed very strategic players to give us stability… to be more efficient and consistent. That gives you the possibility to be more regular in the Bundesliga.”

Since the transfer window closed, German media has reported that each of the quartet were rejected by Dortmund in the summer – other than Hofmann, who had two previous stints at Signal Iduna Park.

Criticism has grown, particularly with Dortmund’s new additions Felix Nmecha, Marcel Sabitzer and Ramy Bensebaini showing indifferent form and failing to fill the gap left by budding superstar Jude Bellingham.

The architect of Leverkusen’s summer transfer window, sporting director Simon Rolfes, had his contract extended to 2028 on Tuesday, a reflection of the former player’s efforts.

Rolfes, who played 377 times for Leverkusen, said his side had “gained enormous quality” and was proud to have extended at “a demanding, modern club hungry for success.”

Leverkusen’s brightest star, Germany midfield maestro Florian Wirtz, was rested for Thursday’s Europa League trip to Swedish side BK Hacken – a reflection of Sunday’s importance to the league leaders.

There is more at stake for Dortmund than just losing touch with the league leaders.

Alongside RB Leipzig, who have won the past two German Cups, Dortmund have been the team most likely to break the champions’ dominance – likely making Leverkusen’s stunning emergence as ‘Bayern hunters’ even more of an issue for the visitors tomorrow.

“This is the most difficult task in Germany at the moment,” said Dortmund defender Mats Hummels on Tuesday regarding the trip to Leverkusen. “We need to stand our ground.”

Barca’s Felix face-off against Atletico teammates

Barcelona forward Joao Felix ended a long goal drought with a vital strike this week, ominous timing for his parent club Atletico Madrid, who visit the Catalan capital tomorrow in La Liga.

The Portuguese attacker struck the winner against Porto to help Barcelona reach the Champions League last 16 after two humiliating group stage exits, a goal which will give him confidence ahead of Atletico’s arrival.

Felix started brilliantly after his late summer switch on loan from Atletico, but quickly faded out and had not scored for his club since mid-September – a barren run of 12 matches.

Diego Simeone’s dangerous Atletico, third, are ahead of Barcelona on goal difference and Felix will be aiming to make a statement after a tough time in the capital.

Atletico splashed 126 million euros ($138 million) on the forward in 2019 from Benfica to replace Antoine Griezmann, who left for Barcelona.

The Frenchman failed to make an impact in the Catalan capital and returned to Atletico, where he is shining.

Felix’s time at Atletico was frustrating, with moments of genius on occasion showing his quality, but consistency eluded him.

The forward never seemed to fit in with Simeone’s desire for a team which works relentlessly all over the pitch.

Felix prefers to play at his own rhythm and impressed in the win over Porto with his well-taken strike and another drive he crashed off the crossbar.

While things are looking brighter for him at Barcelona, he and the team have both found themselves questioned over the past few weeks.

Barca lost the Clasico against Real Madrid, fell 1-0 away against Shakhtar Donetsk and have played poorly in La Liga in other matches, despite avoiding other defeats.

The Spanish champions start the weekend four points behind leaders Real Madrid and second-placed Girona, and while they are level with Atletico, Simeone’s team have a game in hand.

Barca coach Xavi Hernandez hopes Felix’s winner and reaching the next round of the Champions League can help the club turn their recent dip in performances around.

“I think we dominated in terms of play, dominated the game, the second half, I insist, is the path we have to follow – I hope it can be a turning point,” said Xavi.

“Felix was good, incisive, he scored the goal… and forwards are freer when they’ve scored.”

Felix combined well with his compatriot Joao Cancelo, who set him up to score, with the pair both likely to start against Atletico.

Some of the worries around the club were eased by their comeback win over Porto and if they can take three more points at the weekend, the waters will be considerably calmer.

Real Madrid will be confident of staying top of the table with a win over 19th -placed strugglers Granada when they face off this  afternoon, while Girona welcome Valencia earlier that day.

FG heightens surveillance over Europe’s bed bug outbreak

The Federal Government has heightened surveillance at all points of entry following the outbreak of bed bug infestation in France and other parts of Europe.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate however assured that appropriate public measures and responses are in place to contain the bed bug infestation nationwide.

In a statement on Thursday by the agency’s Director, Media and Public Relations, Patricia Deworitshe, the Coordinating Minister revealed that the Ministry has developed a draft sheet, which will be in circulation soon to strengthen awareness and health education on the control of bed bugs.

  • UEFA allows Russian U-17 teams to compete in Europe

UEFA allows Russian U-17 teams to compete in Europe

Russia will be readmitted to European U17 competitions for the first time since the country’s invasion of Ukraine 19 months ago, Uefa has confirmed.

European football’s governing body says boys and girls should not be punished for the actions of adults.

“Football should never give up sending messages of peace and hope,” the organisation said in a statement.

Uefa suspended all Russian teams from European competitions when the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

It also revoked hosting rights for the 2022 Champions League final and 2023 Super Cup, which were due to be held in Saint Petersburg and Kazan respectively, as well as cancelling the sponsorship contract with state-owned energy giant Gazprom.

Uefa says it has “reiterated its condemnation of Russia’s illegal war” and confirmed all other Russian teams remain suspended.

“Uefa’s continuing suspension against Russian adult teams reflects its commitment to take a stand against violence and aggression. Uefa is determined that this position will continue until the war is over and peace restored,” said the organisation’s president Aleksander Ceferin.

“But by banning children from our competitions, we not only fail to recognise and uphold a fundamental right for their holistic development but we directly discriminate against them.

“By providing opportunities to play and compete with their peers from all over Europe, we are investing in what we hope will be a brighter and more capable future generation and a better tomorrow.”

Uefa’s executive committee has asked the organisation’s administration to “propose a technical solution” to allow teams back into U17 competitions even if they have already started.

It added that the matches will not be played in Russia and the teams will not be allowed wear the national kit, display their flag or play their anthem.

The next Under-17 male European Championship finals are due to be played in Cyprus next year. The women’s equivalent will be held in Sweden next May.
