    Tinubu celebrates Oba of Benin on 9th coronation anniversary

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to the Oba of Benin,  Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, on the 9th anniversary of his ascension to the ancient throne of his forebears.

    In a statement on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President joined the Government and people of Edo State, the Benin Traditional Council, and the royal family in celebrating the revered monarch, whose reign, he said, has been marked by “unrelenting service to his domain and the nation.”

    President Tinubu lauded Oba Ewuare II for his steadfast commitment to promoting peace, unity, and social harmony in Edo and beyond.

    He particularly commended the monarch’s role in confronting social vices such as human trafficking and illegal migration, describing his advocacy as vital in safeguarding the nation’s youth.

    The President also praised the royal father’s enduring campaign for a cultural renaissance and the preservation of traditional values, noting his leadership in efforts to secure the repatriation of stolen Benin artefacts from Western institutions as a symbol of African dignity and heritage restoration.

    “As the Oba of Benin marks nine years on the ancient throne of his ancestors, I salute his unwavering leadership in preserving Benin’s cultural legacy and passing it on to future generations,” President Tinubu stated.

    He prayed that God would continue to bless the monarch with long life, good health, and more historic accomplishments in his reign.

    Benin monarch holds feast to mark birthday, coronation anniversary

    Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has planned a grand feast to celebrate his birthday and coronation anniversary.

    A statement by Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) Frank Irabor, said the feast was part of activities to mark the 9th coronation anniversary celebration of the Oba of Benin.

    The statement invited all members of the Benin Royal family, Chiefs, Ikao, Igiohen, Edionwere, Okaighele, market women to the feast scheduled to hold on October 20th, 2025.

    Ologbo riverine communities seek forgiveness for Enogie

    The elders and indigenes of riverine communities of Ologbo Dukedom have appealed to His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, to forgive an Enogie, Prince Owen Akenzua.

    The communities in a statement signed by Pa Samuel Asokuarami Odiowere (Olara-ja), Abel Iyinboh and Pa Samuel Asokuarami, said: ‘’We beseech Your Royal Majesty to consider lifting the suspension that has brought immense suffering to our communities.

    “We acknowledge that the Enogie may have erred, but we beg for your mercy and forgiveness. We are willing to make amends and work towards healing and reconciliation.

    “The suspension of Prince Akenzua as Enogie has created a vacuum that has enabled one other chief to wreak havoc on our communities, and installation of parallel heads in our communities.

    Oba of Benin ends mum’s funeral rites with thanksgiving

    The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, yesterday concluded his mother’s funeral rites; six weeks after the ceremony began, with a thanksgiving service at the Holy Aruosa Cathedral Church, also known as Edo National Church, Benin City.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare, passed away 49 years ago, but her funeral rites were delayed until Oba Ewuare II was crowned as the Oba of Benin, in accordance with Benin customs and traditions.

    The funeral rites began on February 15.

    Oba Ewuare was accompanied by members of the Benin Royal family, including his brother, Prince Aghatise Erediauwa, and his eldest daughter, Princess Ikuoyemwen A. Ewuare, to the church, where they offered prayers and made offerings at the altar.

    The Presiding Priest at the Cathedral, Ohen-osa Edebiri Igbinoghodua, offered prayers to God and ancestors for Oba Ewuare’s family and the Benin Kingdom, thanking the ancestors for the peaceful and successful completion of Iyoba Ewuare’s funeral rites.

    Dignitaries at the ceremony included the state’s Deputy Governor, Mr Dennis Idahosa, National Assembly members from Edo South Senatorial District, the Speaker of Edo House of Assembly, Mr Blessing Agbebaku and some members of the State Executive Council, who paid tributes to the Oba.

    Other dignitaries who paid their respects included the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof  Edoba Omoregie (SAN); former deputy governor of the state, Lucky Imasuen; and ex-president of the World Medical Association, Dr  Osahon Ebabulele.

    In his sermon, Igbinoghodua praised the Oba’s achievements, saying in spite of challenges, he had recorded several milestones worth celebrating.

    He warned those seeking to undermine peace in the Benin Kingdom or to challenge the Oba’s authority to repent, lest they incur God’s wrath.

    The Holy Aruosa Cathedral choir rendered soul-lifting worship songs, and worshippers showcased their dancing skills to the admiration of the Oba, who was in high spirits.

    NAN recalls that on November 21, 2021, Oba Ewuare II conferred the chieftaincy title of Iyoba N’ Uselu posthumously on his beloved mother, Iyoba Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare, and unveiled her statue at the 5-junction in Benin City.
