  • Why Ekiti ex-commissioner resigned

Investigation of road contracts and disbursement of funds to execute some projects triggered the resignation of Ekiti State Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Kayode Oso.

It was gathered that the development degenerated into irreconcilable differences between Governor Ayo Fayose and Oso, who decided to “walk away” about two weeks ago.

Oso reportedly defied Fayose’s directive to issue a statement to raise the alarm that the Department of State Services (DSS) planned to arrest and detain him.

The former commissioner was also said not to be comfortable with a directive from his boss to castigate President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government in the statement to be issued.

The state had in a curious manner announced Oso’s resignation on Wednesday, claiming he quit on medical grounds.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dupe Alade, said the announcement became necessary because “government did not want the issue to be politicised and hijacked by the opposition”.

But a source told our reporter yesterday that the ongoing investigation of road contracts and other projects by the DSS and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) caused tension between Fayose and Oso.

Oso’s refusal reportedly angered Fayose, who used uncomplimentary words on the commissioner.

Senior government officials said to have witnessed the drama include Deputy Governor Kolapo Olusola; Speaker Kola Oluwawole; Mrs. Alade; Chief of Staff Dipo Anisulowo; Finance Commissioner Toyin Ojo and his Environment counterpart, Bisi Kolawole.

Last month, the DSS grilled Ojo on road contracts and ecological funds but the evidence he gave was believed to have “implicated” Oso.

Our source explained that Ojo reportedly told his interrogators that he won’t be able to speak much on the road projects as Oso would be in a better position to shed more light on transactions carried out in the works ministry.

The source said: “When Ojo returned from DSS custody and relived his experience and questions he was asked, especially the areas that affect Oso, the governor directed him (Oso) to issue a statement to abuse the President and DSS.

“But he refused and this infuriated the governor, who described him as stupid.

“The governor said ‘can you see this stupid person who I am considering to anoint as my successor?’

“The commissioner replied by saying ‘how can you call me a stupid man?’ He told the governor that there was need to reconcile funds spent on roads because he doesn’t want anything to destroy his name and image.

“The guy left and dropped all government property in his possession, including the key of his official vehicle.

“He had withdrawn from all government activities for over two weeks now and he was absent at the groundbreaking of the N5.7 billion flyover project last week.”

Our reporter learnt that Oso arrived London on Wednesday, the day his resignation was announced by the government.

A source close to him revealed: “He landed at Heathrow Airport at 1.45 am on Wednesday.”

    Ex-commissioner dumps PDP for APC

Former Ekiti State Health Commissioner Femi Thomas has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The politician will tear his PDP membership card at a ceremony at the APC Secretariat in Ikoro-Ekiti on Saturday.

He and his supporters will receive the brooms, the APC symbol, from the Chairman of Ikoro Ward.

Thomas will be accompanied by party leaders and supporters from the 12 wards of Ijero Local Government.

His media consultant, Prince Tunde Adeleke, said in a statement that the former commissioner is joining the APC without baggage.

He said: “Thomas is expected to formalise his membership of the APC with hundreds of his supporters across the local government. His defection has added to the growing list of strong and credible leaders of the party in the state.”

  • Ex-Commissioner, residents praise Ambode on road repairs

Lagos State Boxing Hall of Fame Chairman Mr Wale Edun has hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for embarking on road construction.

Edun, a one-time Commissioner for Finance, described the road project as a dividend of democracy for Ademola Street in Ikoyi and a legacy for Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area Executive Secretary Miss Toyin Caxton-Martins.

Edun urged the contractor to do a quality work, which will propel residents to pay their taxes promptly.

He praised the government for approving the reconstruction of Ademola Street under the project.

The residents are upbeat about the project.

A former chairman of the residents’ association, Mr Tunde Coker, said the road would be reconstructed with provisions made for drainages and street lights.

Caxton-Martins described the project as part of Ambode’s initiative to develop the state.

She said the construction of 114 roads, two roads in each local government and LCDA, showed the governor’s commitment to drive the state through community development.

She urged the community development association to assist the contractor when the work begins.

Alleged N3.1b money laundering: Suswam, ex-commissioner arraigned

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam and a Finance Commissioner in his administration, Omodachi Okolobia, were arraigned yesterday before a Federal High Court in Abuja for alleged money laundering and breach of trust.

The two, accused of laundering about N3.1 billion belonging to Benue State, were arraigned before Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed on a nine-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail for N100 million and one surety each.

Their lawyer, Ahmed Raji (SAN), applied for their bails, following their pleas.

Raji prayed the court to grant them bails on self-recognition.

But prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), who did not oppose the bail application, insisted that the conditions be attached to the bails.

Justice Mohammed granted the accused bail at N100 million with one surety each.

The judge added that each surety must be an employee of an agency or establishment of the state or federal government and must not be below Grade Level 12.

The judge averred that in the absence of civil servants, the defendants could produce Nigerians who had been conferred with national honours.

But he added that the sureties must swear to affidavits of means while the accused were to deposit their passports with the court’s Registrar.

Suswam and Okolobia were alleged to have, between August 8 and October 30, 2014, in Abuja, used a company, Elixir Securities Limited, to divert about N3,111,008,018.51, the proceeds from the sale of the shares of Benue State government and the state’s Investment and Property Company Limited.

They were also accused of diverting the money, which formed part of N9,411,708,009.51 realised from the sale of the shares of the state, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended in 2012, and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.

  • Imo ex-Commissioner makes case for Buhari

A former Commissioner for Health in Imo State, Dr. Joe Obi-Njoku has faulted the insinuation by some politicians that President Muhammadu Buhari is not keeping pace with his promise in handling Nigeria’s problems.

Obi-Njoku who disclosed this in an interview in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said, “Those accusing Buhari of being slow in handling the country’s problems miss the point”.

He explained that President Buhari was taking his time to diagnose Nigeria’s problems properly before administering treatment to achieve effective results.

The medical practitioner further maintained that “Nigeria’s enormous problems could not be tackled without proper diagnosis, otherwise no good socio-economic result would be achieved”.

He commended the president for taking stock before embarking on appointments and other key matters of governance.

The former commissioner appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience with the Buhari administration, adding, “The President has vowed to put Nigeria in the right direction and his determination to fight corruption showed that he understood the major causes of Nigeria’s backwardness”.

Obi-Njoku argued further that “Nigeria was under threat of collapse under President Jonathan as a result of the overwhelming influence of insecurity but Buhari’s victory saved the Country from collapsing because his military background has been brought to bear in tackling the problem”.

He expressed optimism that Nigerians will witness prosperity under the Buhari’s administration, while urging Nigerians to give him the deserved support to succeed.

The medical practitioner finally dismissed the allegation that President Buhari hates the Igbo, saying, “The President is for all Nigerians and there were Igbo working with him even before now”.

  • Honour for ex-commissioner, governor’s aide

    Honour for ex-commissioner, governor’s aide

A send-off has been held for the immediate past Special Adviser on Rural Matters to Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Hunpe and former Commissioner Cornelius Ojelabi, writes NNEKA NWANERI

Their send off on June 2 did not come as a surprise to many in the Lagos State Ministry. The duo of the former Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon Cornelius Ojelabi and the past Special Adviser on Rural Development to former Lagos State governor Mr Babatunde Hunpe were honoured by the ministry’s officials for their dedication to duty.

Their four years of meritious service was rewarded by the ministry’s staff. They were  made up of directors and staff of the ministry, who recognised their leadership qualities and selfless service and decieded to send them off. To them, they provided selfless services to the people and inspired the staff during their four-year tenure.

The occasion was more of a get-together for members of the ministry. It was declared a work free day; the staff wined and dined at the hall in the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja. It was decorated in blue and yellow. There was no dress code, but most of them were unusually clad in native attires, unusual for a week day.

Outside the hall and while it drizzled, a mini parade was done for them by the men of the Neighbourhood Watch, a pet project they both executed during their tenure.

In a welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Babatunde Sanuth, said the gathering was in appreciation of the good works of Ojelabi. He thanked them for doing the ministry proud.

Ojelabi’s citation was read by Mrs Elizabeth Ashiru. He was in 2007 member of the House of Representatives and asides being a politician, he is a pastor with Cherubim and Seraphim and patron of the Awori Progressives Union.

Mrs Adenike Shobowale read Hunpe’s citation.

During their administration, the Community Development Associations (CDA) became popular, she said.

There were torrents of accolades on the men of the day. One of the workers, Alhaja Sherifat Dosunmu, described the governor’s aide as a ladies’ man; a jolly good fellow; easy going and playful. She said there was never a dull moment around him as he always had a kind word for everyone.

She said the commissioner was a tireless worker and one who is very passionate about rural development, adding their combination has propelled the ministry to what it is now.

Hunpe’s daughter, Mary, thanked the ministry for accommodating her father. She expressed pride that she is her dad.

Lots of gifts were presented to them both.

A book was launched. It  was titled: ‘Enhancing sustainable rural development in Lagos State-four years of Cornelius Ojelabi’s exemplary leadership’, and written by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry Mrs Modupe Ileyemi, whose daughter inspired her to write the book.

Former Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr Lateef Raji, who reviewed the 84- page pictorially illustrated book, said it is a synopsis of the time and dates of Ojelabi. He said book, having zeroed on the the personality of the subject, is a pointer to the fact that one’s background should not determine one’s destiny.

“The book is a chronicle of the achievements of the subject in his four years in office and the impact he had on people, with 271 projects completed during their tenure”, he said.

The book was presented to all by a member of the House of Assembly, who represents Epe Constituency II, Hon Segun Olulade.

In response, Hunpe urged all to extend a hand of fellowship to those stepping into their shoes to continue the goodwill.

Ojelabi led all to join him sing a praise worship song to the Almighty. He charged the staff not to relent, but buckle up so they can effect change and contribute their quota to the development of Lagos.

  • Hire skilled teachers, ex-commissioner urges schools

Former Edo State Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Osarenren, has advised secondary schools to devote more attention to the quality of teachers they recruit.

She gave the advice while delivering the keynote address at this year’s Annual School Owners and Principal Officers Education (ASOPOE) summit, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The theme of the summit, convened by Covenant Educational Consultancy (CEC) and Nigerian Book Fair Trust (NBFT), was: “The truly educated child; a must concern to all education practitioners.”

Mrs Osarenen said: “A qualified teacher is not necessarily a competent or effective teacher. It is the creative application of necessary principles and methods to ensure quality learning that makes you an effective teacher.”

She said teachers who discipline students with love and care would be celebrated.

Mrs Osarenren, who is now the Head of Department of Educational Foundations, UNILAG,  also urged parents to be more aware of their children’s educational needs besides formal education, saying: “To have a truly educated child requires honesty, transparency, will-power and integrity on the part of all the stakeholders in the education project.

“The synergy between the home and the school cannot be ignored. Anybody trained in school alone is an uneducated person.”

Lead Consultant, CEC, Mrs Foluso Atilola, advised school owners to ensure that their schools reflect excellence, the true symbol of education.

She said: “The child is the main factor in the running of a school. If a child now leaves school without being truly educated, then the system and structure of the school should be thoroughly checked.”

Mrs Atilola urged the use of proverbs,  rhymes and lyrics, adding that they have the power to curb indiscipline in children. She advised parents not to interfere with the schools’ ways of disciplining a child, except when it bordered on abuse.

Director, Operations at Imavate Education, Mrs Adesope Olaoye, who spoke on the topic: “Enhancing the school curriculum to produce a total child: The place of value and culture education”, advised schools to combine academic excellence with moral values.

“We need to start using opportunities we have every day to teach more than academics to our pupils. Teach them savings, holiday jobs, patience, grooming, manners, composure, exercise, responsibility, tolerance and many more,”she said.

She added: “To educate a person in mind and not morals is to create a menace to the society. Children are in school to learn skills, knowledge and character.”

  • Beauty queen, ex Commissioner sensitise youths, women on PVCs collection

Youths have been urged to collect their Permanent Voter Cards to enable them vote for candidates of their choice in the forth coming general elections.

A beauty queen, Miss Ukeme James, who is the reigning 2014/2015 Face of Culture South South stated this in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State while on a sensitisation campaign for beauty queens and youths from the South South geo political zone.

According to the Uyo born beauty queen, the youths who are a greater percentage of Nigeria’s population and whose future to a large extent depends on the success and outcome of the 2015 general elections must be in the vanguard in sensitising the electorate on the importance of exercising their franchise.

Her words: “The future of our beloved country lies on the successful conduct of this year’s elections. That is why I am appealing to all queens in the Southsouth and the youths to go out and get their PVCs so as to be able to vote for candidates of their choice according to the dictate of their conscience.”

She advised the youths not to allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians as tools or agents of destruction but to ensure that the elections are peaceful.

The reigning beauty queen admonished the youths to be advocates of peace, tolerance, love and peaceful coexistence in the country and  called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do all in her power towards giving the country an election that will be free, fair and credible on line with the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Education and Women Affairs in Akwa Ibom state and Chairman Board of Trustees of Success Award Organization, Mrs. Eunice Thomas, advised women to take the forthcoming elections seriously and ensure they collect their PVCs to enable them vote for candidates of their choice.

Mrs. Thomas admonished Akwa Ibom women to vote for only candidates who value the role of women in nation building and governance and advised against the selling of the PVCs.

She commended INEC for extending the date for the collection of the PVCs, noting with delight that the extension will afford more women who could not collect theirs and who could have been disenfranchised to have the cards and exercise their civic responsibility.

Her words: “The strategic role of women in the development of our country cannot be ignored and the role of women in helping to deepen our democracy and electoral process cannot be taken for granted. That is why I am calling on all women to see the general election as a vital step towards securing the future of Nigeria for themselves and generations yet unborn.”

  • PDP can’t win Sokoto, says ex-commissioner

PDP can’t win Sokoto, says ex-commissioner

Alhaji Dahiru Yabo, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Commissioner in Sokoto State, spoke with Managing Editor, Northern Operations, Yusuf Alli and Sanni Onogu in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) about the post-primary crisis in the chapter and why the governorship candidate, Ambassador Abdallah Wali, may lose the election.

What is the strength of the Sokoto State PDP, since Governor Aliyu Wamakko has left the party?

You will only appreciate the strength of the PDP in the state, if you have the background of what has happened in the state politically.

    So ,what is the background?

The background is that Wamakko as a person cannot claim to have any popularity in the state right from 2007 when he claimed to have won the election…

    Claimed to have won?

Yes. He claimed to have won the election. I can tell you that Wamakko did not win the election, even in 2007, because at the time he joined the PDP, if the PDP did not have the capacity to win the election, he wouldn’t have joined it. He would have remained in his own party. But, because it was the PDP that had the capacity to win the elections, he accepted to join the party and even after joining the party he did not win the election. I was the Chief Returning Officer of the DPP at that time. Even, when they were doing the collation at the INEC, I was the person who protested after observing a lot of irregularities and rigging and the collation had to be suspended for it to be announced two-three hours later around 9.33pm, when there was nobody there, except his followers and journalists, and he was declared the winner. But, we thank God that a court of competent jurisdiction in Kaduna nullified that election because of irregularities and blatant procedural defects. Then, coupled with the antecedents of his stewardship, which is not in conformity with our moral grounds, Wamakko cannot claim to be popular in Sokoto. But, the problem is that he requires somebody who can give him the needed fight politically.

Has the PDP gotten that person now?

I don’t think so because the Sokoto State PDP has not gotten the right candidate to withstand the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The PDP is now fielding the wrong candidate, in the person of Senator Abdallah Wali.

Why are you saying that Senator Abdallah Wali is a wrong candidate?

Certainly, he is a wrong candidate because, if you remember, he was a candidate in 2003 and he lost the election woefully. He lost the election because he was not a good candidate. From that time till now, I don’t see any value he has added to his political career. He was a senator, Senate Leader under the Obasanjo Administration, yet, he could not win the election against Bafarawa. Yes, with the support of Muktari Shagari, as very powerful minister that time.

How did Wali pick the ticket, instead of the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Muktar Shagari?

There was a repeat of technical mistake politically by the PDP. What happened in 2007 was the same scenario that is repeating itself today. The PDP had a very good candidate, but due to bad advice, they decided to shift, remove their candidate and put somebody, who is not their own, to become the candidate. But, thank God, those people who did that and who caused the problem have now come back to confess what they did and they did the confession individually and collectively. Recently, when Chief Tony Anenih, the Chairman of the PDP BOT chaired a reconciliation meeting in Sokoto with about seven or eight members of his committee, people stood up there to apologise for what they did that time and the person who came second in that election in the person of Ahmed Gusau was among the people who worked against Muktari that time. In fact, he was given the mandate to coordinate the substitution of Muktari with Aliyu Wamakko. Today, he is one of the front runners to make sure that Muktari becomes the candidate. But unfortunately for the second time, the PDP drifted by allowing somebody who intruded into the party to take a bonus of 50 per cent of the structure of the party.

Who is this intruder you are referring to…

That is Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, the former governor of Sokoto State, who was an ardent opponent of the PDP from the beginning and who wouldn’t have joined the PDP, if not because he was being pursued by Governor Aliyu Wamakko. He was pursued out of the APC to the PDP because he had lost grip of the party and that is a party he had dominated for over a year, only for it to be taken away from him within the first one week or two. So, if he has capacity, if he is influential, if he is a professor of politics as he calls himself, why didn’t he do it in the APC? Why couldn’t he do it in the ANPP? Why couldn’t he do it in the ACN? Can anybody tell me, if he had ever won election in his ward, which is Bafarawa village, since 2007 till date. So, this is same person that came into the party and was given 50 per cent of the structure and that already gave him ans undue advantage over any other person on the promise that he is just going to midwife among these candidates and that he is not going to have any preferred and that he is hoping to treat them equally. And all the aspirants were loyal to him. They all paid allegiance to him and on the premise that he is going to be fair to everybody. Thank God that when the Anenih Reconciliation Committee came to Sokoto, in the presence of everybody, I pointed it out, because I was privileged to  speak for 15 minutes, and I was able to tell the committee the problems and the reasons why we are having a sort of misunderstanding in the party. One of the reasons I gave them was that Bafarawa, being a leader in the party, somebody who has been given the structure of the party and somebody who had promised to help in coordinating the party had already taken sides by sporting Abdallah Wali. I said this in the presence of Bafarawa, Abdallah Wali and other people present at the meeting. I told them that the indicators were that the person that was made the chairman of the party, that is, Ibrahim Maigoma, had already started playing the posters of Wali in from of his house showing that this is where Bafarawa is and nobody could dispute that. So, if that has happened, then, whatever was the outcome of the primaries should not surprise anybody. Personally I am not surprised.

Do you see the PDP putting up a good fight and winning the elections?

Of course, they will win, but not with the wrong candidate. Definitely, we cannot get anywhere with Wali. Wali cannot win his local government under the present dispensation because, don’t forget that Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is now the governorship candidate of the APC. Aminu is an in-law to Wali. He is married to his younger sister. Aminu is from Tambuwal town, the headquarters of the local government. Wali is from Seyina. Even, the PDP congress we had ,his candidate could not win even within the PDP. So, when it comes to the general election, nobody in Sokoto can tell you that Wali can win against Aminu Waziri, even in Tambuwal Local Government. So, somebody as a gubernatorial candidate who cannot win an opposing candidate in your own local government then what is the guarantee that he can win anywhere. The reason is that Wali has no structure himself. He is relying on Bafarawa’s structure and Bafarawa, on his own merit, cannot win election in Sokoto. Bafarawa has already been intimidated by Wamakko. Wamakko seized the ANPP from him when he was a governor. For the second time, he has taken over the APC from him where he even put his own structure. So, what is that magic that he thinks he can perform now to win against Wamakko!

Will the Sokoto PDP take the advantage of the extension of time granted by INEC for the submission of governorship candidates by political parties to make a change?

One, after Wali was declared, there was a protest in Sokoto. The second ting is that Muktari Shagari was in Sokoto after the primaries because he came to Abuja and went back to Sokoto and the kind of reception he was given showed the direction of the people and their interest. The APC is happy that Wali was made the governorship candidate by the PDP and the simple reason is because they know he has no structure of his own. He relies on Bafarawa’s structure and, as far as as they are concerned, Bafarawa’s doesn’t have a structure of his own because, as a former governor of Sokoto State for eight years, among all the people that worked with him, both in terms of political appointments and party structure, he cannot count five prominent politicians. Let’s start with his deputy governor. He is not with him. His party chairman is not with him. Out of 14 of us that were his commissioners, only two are with him. Every other person has left him and the records are there. What was his performance in the ACN? What was his performance in the ANPP in the 2011 election? Why is it that he could not remain in APC? Even the person he nominated as a member of the national caretaker committee and that guy was his classmate, he was his very close friend and he was his political associate, Danmadami Isa has left and joined Wamakko. The three gubernatorial candidates that he anointed the one he anointed as a sitting governor under DPP who is Alhaji Maigari Dingiadi, who was his former SSG has joined Wamakko and this is the person who contested against Wamakko and who has been fighting Wamakko for seven years, but he has joined him.

  • Why PDP will lose Sokoto gubernatorial election —ex-Commissioner

The Sokoto State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will lose the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, it was learnt yesterday.

A former Commissioner under the Attahiru Bafarawa’s administration and a stakeholder and member of the Elders Committee of the Sokoto State PDP, Alhaji Dahiru Yusuf Yabo, gave the indication in Abuja during an exclusive interview with The Nation.

Yabo insisted that Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Morroco, Senator Abdallah Wali, who purportedly won the Sokoto State PDP gubernatorial primary, will not be a match for the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

He said: “The Sokoto State PDP has not gotten the right candidate to withstand the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 gubernatorial election because PDP is now fielding the wrong candidate, in the person of Senator Abdallah Wali.

“Certainly he is a wrong candidate because if you remember, he was a candidate in 2003 and he lost the election woefully.

“He was a Senator then, a Senate Leader under Obasanjo administration, yet he could not win the election against Bafarawa. Yes, with the support of Muktari Shagari, a very powerful minister then.”

Yabo, who is also the former Deputy Chairman of the Sokoto State Chapter of the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), noted that Wali has no political structure to win the election but rather relying on the platform of ex-Governor Bafarawa.

He alleged that the primaries was manipulated to favour Wali instead of the generally acceptable aspirant and Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Muktari Shagari.

He disclosed that Shagari has since protested the outcome of the primaries to the national headquarters of the PDP, while other aspirants in the primaries have come together to oppose Wali.

Yabo added: “One, there was a protest letter written by his Excellency Muktari Shagari at the venue that the election should be postponed for a better atmosphere.

“There was also a petition again that was written and passed to all other stakeholders, including the party and the three aspirants have come together, met and also made their complaints to the appropriate quarters and they have all agreed to work together, that is, Muktari Shagari, Senator Gada and Yusuf Sulieman.

“Incidentally, the same Senator Gada, who participated in the election and congratulated Wali at the venue, has now come to see that he is being duped. He has now seen the evidence.

“He now understands that such manipulation would not have benefited him: So, he is also back on board and they have agreed that they will not support Wali no matter what, and they have given their reasons.”
