  • Suspected kidnappers kill ex-councillor

    •After collecting N.5m ransom      •Kidnap kingpin, others arrested

    SUSPECTED kidnappers, at the weekend in Okurekpo, Ethiope East Local Government of Delta State, allegedly killed a former councillor, Onoakpoma Onose.

    The abductors shot dead the victim after collecting N500,000  ransom from his family.

    The kidnappers’ leader, Mr. Omote Eboh and others have been arrested and are in police custody. Two others are on the run.

    The Nation learnt the body had been recovered by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the police command.

    It was gathered some of the suspects, said to have hailed from Eku, Okurekpo and Oviorie communities in Ethiope East, have been arrested. Two other are on the run, but one of their wives has been nabbed.

    A source, who preferred anonymity, said a kidnap kingpin, Mr. Eboh, had robbed persons on Eku/Warri road before Onoakpoma was kidnapped.

    The source said before he was killed, a search was organised for two days at Okurekpo forest, coordinated by the member representing Ethiope East, Evans Ivwurie.

    Onoakpoma’s body was later found by security operatives.

    He said Onoakpoma, before his death, served in Ethiope East Legislative Council as a councillor representing one of the Abraka wards, adding that his body had been deposited at Eku Baptist Hospital mortuary.

    Police spokesman could not be reached on the phone, but a senior officer confirmed the incident.

    He said the suspects have been arrested.

    A community leader in Ikaram-Akoko, Ondo State, Chief Ojo Omotayo (aka Oluomo), who was kidnapped last Saturday, has regained freedom.
    Omotayo, a former councillor in Akoko Northwest Local Government, who represented Erusu/Ikaram Ward, was abducted on Akunu-Ikakumo Road while on a tour.
    The Akala of Ikaram, Oba Andrew Momodu, who broke the news in his palace, hailed the media, security agents and Ikaram comunity for their support in ensuring the victim’s freedom.

    Ex-councillor, four others in police net for ‘murder’

    Akwa Ibom State Police Command said yesterday it had arrested five persons in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of Rosemary Jacob and two others.

    Police Commissioner Mr. Don Awunah said the offence was committed on July 29, 2010, adding that the suspects were arrested on March 15.

    He listed their names as Friday Obonoh; Edidiong Boniface, aka “Tunde” (at present remanded in prison for another alleged offence); Anietie Donatus, aka “Tea Boy”; Ubong Obonoh aka Ubon and Godwin Etim.

    Obonoh is a councillor in Oruk Anam Local Government and ex-personal assistant to a Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) official.

    Awunah said that the police received a report Rosemary was abducted on July 29, 2010 with two men on Abak Road, Uyo by a gang of seven men for an alleged failed land transaction.

    He said the victims were taken to a house at Ewet Housing Estate, the home of Obonoh, where they were tortured to death and their remains and vehicle disposed of.

    The family of the head of Ikot Ese village in Oruk Anam Local Government have petitioned the police commissioner over the whereabouts of their husband and father, Chief Aniekan Obonoh.

    The 50-year-old man was reportedly taken away by his nephew, Friday Obonoh, a former councillor in Oruk Anam Local Government and The daughter of the village head, Emem Obonoh, in a petition to the police titled: ‘Arrest of Friday Obonoh – an appeal to release my father, Chief Aniekan Obonoh’, implored the commissioner of police to ask “Friday Obonoh, who we learnt is in your custody to release our husband, father, uncle, cousin and brother, Chief Aniekan Obonoh, aged 50.”

    The petition reads: “Chief Aniekan Thompson Obonoh is Friday Obonoh’s uncle.  He had a malaria attack in 2013 and we were happy when Friday Obonoh, his nephew, came to the village and volunteered to take him to hospital. One of the children wanted to follow him, but he objected, saying our father was in safe hands.

    “But sir, since then, we’ve not heard anything about our husband and father.  Our mother, 75, has been having sleepless nights, resulting in medical complications that have affected the family financially. Whenever we ask Friday about the health condition and whereabouts of our husband and father, he tells us he is fine.”

  • Ex-councillor, 500 PDP members dump PDP in Delta

    A former councillor for Ibru community of Agbarha-Otor in Ughelli North Legislative Arm of Delta State, Roland Oyibo, yesterday dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Oyibo, who joined the progressives with over 500 supporters, said he made the move because it was only in APC he had his leaders and reclaim what he called his 16 wasted years in the PDP.

    The former councillor said with his teeming supporters, he had less work to do during the local government and 2019 general elections.

    He assured that the APC would be victorious in both polls.

    Oyibo pledged to get more members for the APC, saying

    Chief Austin Uloho had given exemplary leadership in the local government area.

    The former councillor also expressed his loyalty to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the member representing Delta Central in the National Assembly as well as other leaders of the party.

    He reassured the people of his readiness to make Agbarha-Otor an APC ward.

    The ceremony was attended by a former Delta State lawmaker, Friday Onodjai; APC ward and local government chairmen, Felix Ekure, Chief Samuel Oteri and Comr. Monday Ojeghe.

    They said Delta State residents were tired of PDP’s impunity.

    According to them, the current hardship in the land is the result of what they called PDP’s years of mismanagement.

    They assured that the challenges would be over soon as the Muhammadu Buhari was restructuring the economy and the country.
