Speaking to newsmen in a Bénin City, Engr. Osahon insisted he is still in the race to secure the APC ticket to return to the National Assembly in 2019.

He stated that he was never a member of the controversial Reformed APC nor that of the Kwankwasiyan Group rooting for the presidential ambition of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano state.

Engr. Osahon said his grouse against the APC was ready being looked into by the party machinery set up over anointing of a particular individual as against the interest of many contestants jostling for the ticket.

He said, “Firstly, I want to say that I am not a member of the RAPC, I am a member of the APC and still a member of the APC; I am not a member of the Kwankwaso Group who regards themselves as Kwankwasiyans and I have not dumped my party. As we speak I am a member.

“It is true that I am aggrieved about certain happenings in APC and I have told members of my party, the leadership that I am not happy and they are already looking into such issues.”

  • Opposition deliberately ignored FG’s achievements – Ex-Rep

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former member of House of Representatives, Hon. Duro Meseko, has berated the opposition parties for being deliberately blind to the achievements of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In an interview with The Nation, Meseko accused members of the opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of mischief and downplaying the “sterling achievements” of the President.

Meseko, who is aspiring for the National Publicity Secretary of APC, it is preposterous for anybody to pretend not to see the monumental achievements already recorded by the Buhari administration, especially in the areas of anti-corruption, security, infrastructural development and the economy, among others.

He said that while opposition is good for the growth of democracy, it must be done with all sense of honesty and discretion and must be devoid of deceit.

Meseko said: “When I look at the volume of work going on across the federal roads in the country and the level of commitment to them, I ask myself if most of these opposition critics live in Nigeria or other planets.

“When I see the gains made in the area of insurgency in the North East and even in the Federal Capital City, Abuja where I live, I ask myself if the opposition elements are not being deliberately mischievous.

“When I look at the anti-corruption war being waged by the Buhari government and the number of convictions already secured, including those of two former governors, I wonder if the opposition is not deliberately blind to these achievements.

“Honestly, I had expected a more robust and honest engagement from opposition elements, but what I got and still getting are bare-faced daylight distortion of facts and figures being sold to the general public in the name of winning the forthcoming elections.”

Speaking further, Meseko said the opposition “has to do an honest introspection and toe the line of constructive criticism for it to be taken seriously by well-meaning Nigerians”.

Ex-Rep urges APC to pick flag bearer from Ekiti South

A former Houses of Representatives member, Bamidele Faparusi, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State to choose its governorship flag bearer from the Southern Senatorial District.

Faparusi spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, while officially declaring his intent to run for governorship on the platform of the progressives’ party.

The aspirant also inaugurated his campaign coordinators and opened his campaign headquarters at Similoluwa on Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti.

Faparusi, who hails from Ode-Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area, said the general feeling in the state was that the next governor should come from Ekiti South, which had not produced the chief executive.

He said: “Any attempt by our party to look beyond the South to field our candidate means we are kissing the governorship bye-bye. For APC to win, we must pick our candidate from the South.”

Faparusi, who represented Ekiti South Federal Constituency II between 2011 and 2015, promised to provide jobs for youths, empower artisans and attract investment to the state, if given the top job.

  • Ex-Rep, kinsmen battle over land, kingship

Ex-Rep, kinsmen battle over land, kingship

A land/ kingship tussle has torn apart ex-Rep Ned Nwoko and his kinsmen.  The battle is now before the court, writes Okungbowa Aiwerie, Asaba

Idumuje-Ugboko community, Aniocha North Local Government Area in Delta State has murdered sleep. No thanks to a land/kingship tussle between an ex-federal lawmaker Prince Ned Nwoko and Crown Prince Nonso Nwoko.

Several families have been displaced from their homes following attacks. So much bad blood has been generated by the impasse that the women groups have joined the fray with a tit-for-tat invoking of ancestral curses on those loyal to the contending parties.

Walter Eziashi – Ex-President General Idumuje-Ugboko Community, in a statement in Asaba, the Delta State capital, debunked insinuations that Ned Nwoko was interested in becoming the king or  is sponsoring any candidate for the kingship position, stressing that the  Idumuje-Ugboko royal throne is by qualification and not by sponsorship.

According to him, the issue at stake is the kingship tussle between Crown Prince Nonso Nwoko and Prince Uche Nwoko, adding that tradition prescribes that the first surviving male child ascends the throne.

He said: “By our tradition, it is always the surviving first son that becomes the Obi whose mother must be an indigene. The two contenders are Prince Nonso whose mother is from Ubulu-Uku and Prince Uche whose mother is from Idumuje-Ugboko. If we go down history the first Obi was Obi Nwoko 1, his first son was Prince Omouju, he never ascended the throne because his mother was not an Ugboko woman, but he married an Ugboko woman knowing what he suffered, he married from a village called Ugboufu from the Okoh family and Omousi was their offspring. Omousi was crowned an Obi. Omousi’s first son was Obi Nkeze whose mother was from Atuma in Idumuje-Ugboko. When Obi Nkeze died in 1955, the issue of succession came up, because the actual first son of Obi Nkeze died, it fell on Prince Albert Nwoko and there was a tussle and between 1955 and 1981 Ugboko was governed by a regent, because the mother of the surviving first son was not a native of Ugboko, but from Ugbodu. The man who would have become king, Prof Demas Nwoko declined the position. So the mother of the man interested in the kingship was from Idumuje-Unor and was ineligible, but to resolve the logjam, our elders agreed that Obi Albert rule with a proviso that he must marry an Ugboko woman that would succeed him. And this led to Obi Albert after coronation in 1981 marrying his first wife who was childless, but his second wife gave him a male child called Prince Uche Nwoko who attends Command Secondary school, Ebonyi State.”

He went on: “ There are other contending issues, in our culture if you have a criminal matter hanging on you , if you have challenges of dishonesty  especially dishonesty that carries a sentence of not less than two years ,so whatever title you hold you are stripped of it. Let us even agree that there will be a waiver on the kingship tussle, but there has been a case of forgery that has been on since 2015 against Prince Nonso. He was invited by the Delta State Police Command, the DPP says he has a case to answer and was charged to court and the case is ongoing, the prosecution has almost completed its case just for Nonso to open his defence. There is case of stealing, a case of breaking and entry running to two years now and a case of compounding felony to do with the rape of a 15 year old girl in the palace. We are saying that no sane community will allow a man with criminal charges to become their king”.

The Iyase of Idumuje-Ugboko, Chris Ogwu, blamed the crisis on Crown Prince Nonso Nwoko, alleging that several meetings called by elders of the community to resolve issues were turned down by the Crown Prince.

But Crown Prince Nonso Nwoko dismissed the idea that there was a kingship tussle over the throne, stressing that the whole crisis revolves around the issue of land.

His words: “The issue revolves around land. Every other thing you hear about the crisis is because of land. In fact I will summarise it by saying if we were to take all the land he wants and give to him (Ned), the crisis will vanish. More than ten year ago, he (Ned) was given over 30 hectares of land to build a ranch and a dairy factory and in this community there are so many young men, so our fathers in their wisdom gave him land. But he did not have any such intention to build any ranch or dairy farm, instead he converted that expanse of land to his private estate without coming back to the community to ask for a change of use. He was pampered because as a member of the royal family he got advantages that could not be extended to other persons, but let them down badly. The other members of the community are still complaining about his misuse of community land. I know that at a meeting of the Izuani, my uncles were struggling so hard to defend that decision”.

The Crown Prince did not spare the Delta State Police Command headed by Mr. Zanna Ibrahim for having compromised, saying: “The Delta Police Command has been seriously compromised on this matter, it is for this reason we moved the case to the A.I.G’s office in Benin-City. After the burial rites of the late Obi had been perform we were trying to hold an Izuani meeting (community meeting), the next thing was that we were attacked by thugs imported from outside the community and disrupted the meeting with the police standing by and doing nothing, after I implored the police to protect us they refused saying that the atmosphere was charged and that it will not be proper to continue the meeting because it will lead to a break- down of law and order. The Delta Police demanded we give them a 24 hour notice if we want to hold another meeting. To this request, we acceded, but on the day the meeting was to hold despite the presence of the police, local government chairman and others the thugs would not let the meeting hold despite the presence of the police.”

Prince Ned Nwoko, who represented Aniocha/Oshimili, denied his involvement in the crisis, saying that he did not sponsor anybody to cause crisis in the community.

He said: “The town’s meeting was a diversionary effort from the serious allegations over the death of the Obi. The crisis arose because there is a tussle for the kingship after the death of Obi Albert Nwoko three months ago.

“The wives of the late Obi petitioned the Inspector General of Police over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the King. The state command’s effort to investigate the matter has been frustrated by Nonso and co who refused all invitations for questioning.

“Instead he resorted to calling a town’s meeting without the Chiefs (who already have a High Court injunction against him and others). The beating of the Chiefs at the meeting was the beginning of the crisis.

“I wasn’t there but the Commissioner of Police in the State and the Assistant Inspector General, Benin will give you details if the kidnappings of the Chiefs and others opposed to Nonso and the subsequent vandalisation of their cars and properties.

“One Okada man (motorcycle operator) named Cyprian was killed in the palace. His boys have been arrested and charged with various offenses.

“The only zoo in Delta is there, we have the fish pond, the poultry, providing jobs for the people. I initially earmarked N2 billion but I ended up spending over N10 billion. I have fully utilized the land given to me for the purpose it was meant for.

“We are fighting a civilised fight in the court over the land issue, and we are civilized enough to wait for the decision if the courts,” he said.

    Ex-Rep, lawyer charged with stealing

THE police have charged a two-time House of Representatives member, Nze Chidi Duru and a senior lawyer, Smart Iheazor, with stealing and impersonation.
The police accused the first defendant, Duru and second defendant Iheazor of stealing three office files and one HP Laptop valued at N250,000, property of an Abuja-based firm.
They were arraigned yesterday before Magistrate A. A. Adefulire of a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The defendants, who are both senior lawyers of 28 and 30 years post-call, are standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, breach of peace and impersonation.
Prosecuting counsel Mr. P. O Idenyenmia told the court that the property belonged to First Guarantee Pension Ltd (FGPL) and that the defendants conspired to commit the alleged offences on January 11, at 65 Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.
He alleged that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by willfully and unlawfully invading the firm with intent to forcibly take over its management and assets.
The defendants, Idenyenmia added, with intent to defraud introduced themselves as vice chairman and secretary respectively of First Guarantee Pension Ltd and acted in an attempt to take over the firm.
According to him, the offences were punishable under Sections 409, 285, 166 (d) and 378 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Duru’s counsel Emeka Etiaba, SAN told the court that his client was too ill to stand trial, could not even stand upright without assistance and was even about to collapse inside the courtroom.
Duru, he added, was discharged from the hospital yesterday morning and was whisked to the court by the police. He made an oral application for the arraignment to be adjourned. But the prosecutor argued that Duru had been certified fit to go home by doctors at the police hospital.
He said he could not return Duru to police custody, especially since a magistrate had already issued a warrant for the defendant’s arrest since last Friday.
Magistrate Adefulire upheld the prosecution’s argument and ordered the defendants to enter the dock.
Etiaba added: “They have been in police custody for four days, which contravenes their constitutional rights. Their rights have been infringed. The first defendant is a member of the bar of 28 years and was a two-time former member of the House of Representatives and a chairman of Guarantee Pension.
“He is the founder and promoter of Guarantee Pension and it was going to be forcibly taken away. The second defendant is his counsel and a partner at their law firm, White and Kings Chambers, in Abuja. I urge the court to grant them bail in the most liberal terms.”.
The prosecutor observed that the defendants reside and practice in Abuja and they should thus be made to provide sureties.
Ruling, Magistrate Adefulire granted the defendants N500,000 bail each with one surety in the like sum. The case was adjourned till March 9 and 10, for hearing

Ex-Rep Nze Duru spends fifth day in police custody

Former member of the House of Representatives and Vice Chairman of First Guarantee Pension Limited Nze Chidi Duru is spending his fifth night in the cell of Zone 2 Police Command.

He was invited last Thursday by the Lagos State Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, who later referred the case to the Zone 2, headed by Assistant Inspector General of Police Kayode Aderanti.

    He was subsequently detained.

His detention was in connection with the crisis involving FGPL and National Pension Commission, which took over FGPL in 2011.

The legal practitioner was said to have been detained following an accusation by the National Pension Commission that the Vice Chairman of FGPL invaded the premises of his company with the help of some armed men in police uniform. It was alleged that he broke into the office and stole documents belonging to the company, including laptops and car keys.

    But Duru denied the allegations.

The Nation learnt that he collapsed inside the police cell and was rushed to the emergency unit of Police Hospital in Ikoyi. He was still in the private ward in the hospital as at the time of filing this report.

Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday, the former parliamentarian said the police acted illegally.

Duru, who accused the police of being biased in the way they have handled the matter, said court verdicts on FGPL crisis were in his favour.

Rather than comply with court rulings, he accused the police of acting in cahoots with PenCom to intimidate him.

Lamenting about his state of health, he alleged that he was not allowed access to his drugs, an action he claimed aggravated his condition while in cell.

Calls to AIG Aderanti’s Owoseni mobile number were not answered as at the time of filing this report.

Following a controversial target report, PenCom dissolved the management of FGPL in 2011 and imposed an interim management committee, which runs the firm till now.

In his ruling on the matter on July 12, 2012, Justice D.U. Okorowo nullified the target report and ordered a restoration of FGPL board and management.

A criminal charge against Duru preferred by the Economic and Fiancial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the same matter was also struck out last November.

  • Ex-Rep condemns National Assembly over PDP crisis

A former member of the House of Representatives, Chief Uche Igwesi, has berated the National Assembly’s leadership role in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis.

He noted that the National Assembly leadership erred by allowing the Kawu Baraje-led faction into the complex, which led to a rowdy session at the House.

The former House member said the National Assembly was created for national discourse and not for party politics.

In a statement, Igwesi described the visit of the Baraje-led faction as a “complete distraction from legislative business”.

He noted that since the National Assembly was made up of various parties, issues pertaining to any party should not be entertained on the floor of a multi- party legislative house.

Igwesi wondered why the Baraje-led faction would go to the National Assembly after a truce was believed to have been brokered with the Presidency.

He warned the faction to desist from being used to further destabilise the party.

The former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly attributed the crisis in the ruling party to the struggle for power in 2015.

According to him, only God can choose leaders.

The former lawmaker urged the various factions to sheathe their swords and re-unite as a family.

Igwesi attributed the crisis in the PDP to the struggle for power in 2015, adding that power and other promotions are divine matters.

He advised politicians to play the game with decorum and allow God to choose their leaders.

The politician urged the warring PDP groups to sheathe their swords and re-unite.

Igwesi hoped the PDP would come out of the crisis stronger and more united.

He said the PDP was used to crises and would resolve the present crisis.

According to him, the President should not lose focus or be distracted from his transformation agenda but to see the criticisms against him challenges that should spur him to serves the nation better.

The anti-graft agency had on January 8, 9 and 10 declared him wanted through press releases and advertorials in newspapers, and radio for alleged breach of trust and illegal diversion of N281 million.

But Gbinije In the suit before an Abuja High Court accused the anti-graft agency of declaring him wanted without inviting him over the allegation.

The applicant, who represented Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State between 2003 and 2007 in the motion by his counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju of Chief Afe Babalola Chambers is asking the court to declare the action as unconstitutional, illegal and a breach of his fundamental right.

Denying the alleged fraud, the deponent stated “that the condition of health of the applicant has so far worsened as a result of the said publication and subsequent rise of his blood pressure which may lead to cardiac arrest and death.”

According to him, the EFCC rebuffed attempts by Ogunwumiju to seek appointment to enable the applicant appear before the commission.

SSS arrests Boko Haram member in ex-Rep’s house

The State Security Service (SSS) has arrested a Boko Haram member, Hassan Pagi Bukar, at the residence of a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tijani Umara Kumalia.

Bukar is suspected of visiting Abuja to wreak some havoc. The ex-lawmaker was interrogated by the SSS on Friday.

“He is with the SSS where he is currently undergoing interrogation. We also quizzed the ex-lawmaker on Friday.”

The Joint Task Force in the North-East is currently on the trail of the 19 leaders, who were declared wanted in November last year.

A source said: “We are still searching for them; we have not been able to locate any. But with the collaboration of all security agencies, we will succeed.
