    Excitement about varsities’ geological maps

The launch of seven geological maps prepared by seven universities under the University Partnering Programme (UPP) of the ExxonMobil at the Eko Hotel recently raised profile of geosciences programme in Nigeria to new heights.

The maps were produced by the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Uiversity of Calabar (UNICAL), University of Ibadan (UI), and the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

It was the second of such launch to be done since the initiative started to build practical capacity of students and lecturers by supporting field work in 2007.

Andrew Ejayeriese, General Manager, Exploration, Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPNL), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, said at the event held in the upscale Sky Restaurant of the hotel, was significant because it was evidence that the initiative, which invested about N2 billion in 14 universities for equipment and fieldtrip, had been successful.

“Today’s event is very significant to us as an organization, not just because of the new maps being launched and their contribution to Nigeria’s national database, but also because it signifies the outstanding success of an innovative social investment vehicle we introduced to help improve on the quality of Geoscience education in the Nigerian university system.

“When we introduced the University Partnering Programme (UPP) in 2007, little did we know we would be celebrating its impact on the scale we are today at this event.  For us at ExxonMobil, the UPP was a child of necessity.  As an organization, we were concerned about the quality of geoscience education in Nigerian universities, especially with regards to the practical aspects of the course,” he said.

Ejayeriese praised the usefulness of the maps in helping to enhance oil and gas activities, and reiterated the firm’s commitment to extending the project to all public universities offering geology as a course nationwide.

Consultant on the UPP, as well as a sister-programme, University Assistance Programme (UAP), Dr Daniel Lambert-Akhionbare, said the benefits to each university, a bus, equipment, and N5.7million yearly for logistics and field allowances for lecturers for three years, went a long way to improve the quality of geosciences graduates produced by the participating institutions as well as their lecturers.

He was also excited that the maps passed the scrutiny of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), an important benchmark set at the start of the project.

“We see a gradual increase in the quality of graduates of geosciences being produced,” he said.

“When we set up the project in 2007, we decided there must be measurable parameters.  We decided that every university must publish maps.  We are glad today that seven maps are being launched that have been published by the NGSA,” he said.

To consolidate on the progress made, Lambert-Akhionbare said universities must ensure that geosciences students spend at least 100 days on the field; and that university authorities ensure the funds provided are utilized for the project.

  • Excitement as Lagos lawmakers meet constituents

Excitement as Lagos lawmakers meet constituents

Tuesday, November 10, the Lagos State House of Assembly introduced an innovation to the business of legislation in the history of Nigerian politics. Constituents of the 40 state constituencies in Lagos State witnessed, for the first time, one-on-one interaction with their representatives; and were able to tell them what they wanted from the state government. This aimed at engendering rapid development of the rural areas and to avoid embarking on projects that have no direct significance to the well-being of the people.

Across the length and breadth of Lagos, halls, open spaces and car parks were filled to capacity as members of the Lagos State House of Assembly met their constituents for the first–ever constituency stakeholders’ meeting.

Stakeholders, including those who never believed in the project, arrived at the different venues before the agreed time of 10:00 a.m. They were curious to know what the lawmakers would tell them.

The Assembly had widely publicised the programme days before, detailing the venues across the 40 constituencies and other vital information.

In June, the Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa had, in his inaugural speech, assured Lagosians that the Assembly would involve the people in their activities. Obasa had assured them that their inputs would form part of 2016 Budget.

From Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos Island, Kosofe, Surulere and others, Lagosians trooped out in their numbers to be counted.

In Agege where Obasa met his people, every available space was occupied. The crowd was huge so much so that security agents found it taxing controlling it.

Obas, chiefs, various unions, traders, Community Development Associations (CDAs), youths, market men and women all had one thing or the other to say.

Obasa, in a welcome address, told stakeholders that the concept of the meeting was unique as it was first of its kind in the nation’s history.

He said: “We are collaborating with our constituencies to ensure that the impact of government is felt at all levels and to bolster rapid socio-economic projects, control of traffic, implementation of traffic laws, security and maintenance of law and order.”

According to him, the intention was to oil the wheel of the social contract which the Assembly has with the people.

He said the state House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state “by virtue of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” (as amended).

He stressed that this could be better appreciated against the backdrop of the fact that the Assembly performs other functions including oversight, checks and balances on the Executive and Judicial arms of government.

According to Obasa, Agege will soon be the beneficiary of a flyover bridge at Pen Cinema area of the constituency.

The people were joyous over this piece of news from their representative because Pen Cinema area records notorious traffic on daily basis.

On the Island, the scenario was similar as the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshinlokun told stakeholders that the Assembly was eager to know the desire of the people for onward transmission to the Executive for implementation.

The lawmaker was accompanied by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and the Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Tajuden Olusi. Oba Akiolu commended the Assembly for giving the people a voice through the initiative.

Olusi, a veteran politician and leader of the APC in the Lagos Central Senatorial District corroborated his view. He called for more of such rapport between the Assembly and the people.

At Lagos Mainland, Hon. Oladele Adekanye (aka) Lado interacted with  his constituents on their expectations. He commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for embarking on the construction of over 100 roads across the state.

The lawmaker assured the people of the sincerity of the Obasa-led Assembly on the project.

He, however, called on the Federal Government to quickly fix the power sector to ensure Nigerians are gainfully engaged.

For former NBA chief, Mr. Monday Ubani, the Lagos State House of Assembly deserved praises in view of the timeliness, concept and style of the stakeholders’ meeting.

He said: “I want to commend the Lagos Assembly for holding this exercise. All we are asking for at UNILAG Estate, Isheri Magodo is road construction and provision of street lights.”

Speaking on the exercise, a rights activist, Mr. Michael Okezie said the Assembly has blazed the trail in participatory democracy.

“I want to commend the lawmakers for the initiative because most of the time, we don’t have this kind of opportunity to talk to our representatives.

“That the lawmakers decided to do this on their own is a clear departure from the past. I, therefore, commend them and hope that other state legislatures will toe the same line for the benefit of the people.

Reacting to the exercise, spokesman of the Assembly, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, who spoke at the Local Government Health Centre Hall Mascara, Ketu introduced a unique dimension to the meetings as everybody present was handed a form to fill their expectations from government, even as two senior members of staff of the Assembly also documented the people’s requests.

The innovation, perhaps, made the event the faster to end, even as Oba of Ketu, Oba Isiaka Balogun, APC leader in Kosofe, Chief Stephen Oyedele, former chairman, Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Monday Ubani, market leaders and others praised the quality representation Hon. Braimoh is providing the people.

They also praised the Assembly for bringing about participatory democracy by networking with those who voted them into office. The scenario was equally the same across other constituencies. Stakeholders across the 40 constituencies requested for schools and roads.

    •School gets tourism club

Classes were suspended and drums rolled out to celebrate the visit of Miss Rivers State carnival, Stephanie Ijeoma Chinda, popularly known as Miss CARNIRIV when she visited her Alma mater, Community Secondary School, Oroworukwo in Port Harcourt City Local government of Rivers State.

Stephanie won the 2014 edition of Miss CARNIRIV pageant, organised yearly by Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTDA).

Miss CARNIRIV, who arrived the school at 8:30am with her convoy, who are members of staff of the RSTDA and the Nigerian Postal Service, said she visited her alma mater to inaugurate her pet project, Tourism Club  and teach the pupils how to use postcards.

“This is my school, I am proud to be here today.   I am here to formally launch my project in this school, which is the Tourism Club.

“I also used that opportunity to address the challenges of letter writing through the help of NIPOST staff. You can see that many students were given postcards to address to whoever they like and send to the post office. This alone will bring their memory back to the act of letter writing. Many people have forgotten about letter writing because of technological advancement in the country.

“So this is what my pet project intends to do in this school. And I believe, by the grace of God, we will change their mindset to understand the importance of letter writing and re-awaken their consciousness on the use of post card,” she said.

Mr Kehinde Olorunnipa, Head of Marketing, NIPOST, described the project as laudable.

“This project is lauded because it is a way of re-awakening the art of letter writing.  We taught the students the processes of writing a letter, how to properly address a letter. The vision is to catch them young. We want to see how we can contribute to the culture of letter writing. GSM messaging has done much damage to letter writing, all these abbreviations used in GSM text messages have affected the mentality of students,” he said.

The school Principals, Elder Graham Oko-Jaja (Senior Secondary) and Mrs. Dame Likeness Diri (Junior Secondary), said they were happy to be remembered by Miss CARNIRIV. They said her visit would encourage some of the pupils to work hard in their academic endeavours.

Oko-Jaja said: “What is happening here today is that one of our ex-students, who graduated from this school won Miss CARNIRIV 2014. And as part of the activities to mark the end of her tenure she has returned to her school to pay a courtesy visit and launch one of her pet projects called Tourism Club. We have a vision in this school and that vision is to be among the three best schools in Rivers State.”

Dr Sam Dede, Director-General, RSTDA and award winning Nollywood Actor, who was represented by Mr Oyet UK, said the agency would continue to initiate ideas that would revive art and culture, and make tourism the signpost of development.

“The Rivers State Tourism Development Agency and NIPOST are collaborating to bring back the culture of postcard. We also intend to let the world see the tourism potential in Rivers State, the sites and the wonderful things we have to offer. The only impression people have about Rivers State and the Niger Delta is militancy and we are determined to change that through the post cards culture,” he said.

The Okurike community and environs of Agwuagwune in Biase local government of Cross River State were excited to benefit from the free medical treatment organized by the Eastern Naval Command of the Nigeria Navy under its Medical Rhapsody package which is part of activities to mark the Navy’s 59th anniversary.

The free medical outreach featured free eye screening, free eyeglasses, malaria treatment, blood pressure check, de-worming among others.

    • TheFOC, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola administering drugs

Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola said the gesture was in line with the Navy’s Corporate Social Responsibility and a deliberate effort to promote the Nigeria Navy as well as sell it to the communities.

He said, “This is our way of reaching out to communities in the hinter lands and we choose Okurike so as to reach the real people who need this treatment and at the same time introduce the Navy to as many young men and women in the area as well as spur them those who may like to join.

Babalola hoped that the exercise will be able to impact so many lives because there are a lot of people who need the free service we are rendering today we pray we get to them all.

Traditional ruler of Biase, HRM Onun (Apostle) Nicholas Odum described the Navy’s magnanimity as unprecedented and uncommon because they have not witnessed such in a long while.

According to the monarch, “We have had some organization in the past offer my people free healthcare services but not in this magnitude there is nothing more important than being healthy because health is greater than wealth.

“A lot of people here are just farmers and fishermen who live on meagre income from their produce. This gesture to the people in my domain by the Nigeria Navy has saved a lot of lives and money too. We as a people are indeed grateful that they choose Biase and especially Okurike. I am using this opportunity to call on other organization and well spirited Nigerians to emulate this display of empathy.”

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Ukana Oqua said, “The last time I saw anything close to this was when the Presbyterian Church carried out a similar programme in 2012. Most of the people you see here find it difficult going to hospital not because they don’t want go for treatment when they are sick but they really don’t have the money”.

“Many will be saved because of this exercise. A lot have also died due to neglect of minor cases like malaria some have gone blind because they could not afford to get medical attention on time and for lack of funds too but with what the Navy has done I am sure a lot of lives will be impacted.”

Mrs. Florence Ajah, 75-year old, said she had been suffering from an eye problem for more than five years and has been contemplating her visit to the hospital because of the financial implication and proximity.

She said, “They treated and gave me free medicated glass and even asked me to come to Calabar whenever I can that they will still attend to me for free. It is amazing, I am so happy they remembered us today. If I went to the hospital I know I may not be able to afford it but I am really glad to came into our domain. I am going back to call two of my friends in their house who are also having issues with their eyes to come to the venue because its totally free.

“They brought it to my door steps. What more can I ask for? Moving from here to Calabar or anywhere else was a very difficult thing for me to do but the Navy have put a smile on my face.”

Councilor representing the ward, Mr Ukong Atu, who described Nigeria Navy’s magnanimity as one that touched impacted on many lives.

Atu said, “I am also very sure that the drugs and other materials they brought to administer on our people will be completely exhausted because there are so many people in my area who need minor medical attention but have not been able to access it because of finance and the distance too. We are glad they thought it wise to enter our place because the terrain is a bit difficult.”

Excitement as winner emerges in RTC lottery

After six months of waiting anxiously for a winner to emerge in the Rivers State Transport Company (RTC) Board and Win promo, a lucky winner finally became the proud owner of a brand new 2014 Kia Picanto car in the Project Xperts 360 Limited-sponsored raffle.

    • The draw to pick the winner
    • The draw to pick the winner

The winner is Mr. Hopeson Ikeagwu, a native of Erema in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local government of the state.

Apart from the star winner, the promo conducted at the RTC Waterlines park, also produced the a second and third winners who went home with N100,000 and N70,000 respectively, after their tickets were picked from among thousands of others during the grand finale of the draw.

Apart from the prize given to the first, second and third winners, about 2,000 pens, GSM telephone handsets, branded umbrellas and T-shirts were also given out as consolation prizes in the raffle which was monitored by the representative of the National Lottery Commission, led by Mrs. Kate Ibekwe/

Niger Delta Report man who witnessed the draw said it was very difficult to get across to the ticket owners who had boarded RTC buses six months earlier. Some could not remember that they bought a ticket when they were contacted; others mistook the caller for fraudster, while few others either switched off their phones or had a network problem.

But when the ticket of the star winner, Mr. Hopeson Ikeagwu, he immediately picked as if he was expecting a special call and when the representative of the NLC, Mrs. Ibekwe told him: “Sir, you are the star winner of Kia Picanto for the ‘Board and Win’ promo” he joyfully replied, “Oh my God are you sure!  I am glad that the Lord has done it again. Can I come now to take my car,” the winner asked.

Ikeagwu who recently received the car key in the presence of the organizers, Project Xperts 360 Limited, the representative of NLC and RTC, disclosed that when he boarded  the vehicle at RTC park and the ticket was given to him he immediately ask God for favour.

He described his fortune as God’s favour saying, “When I received the call that I am the winner, I felt very happy. I never entertained any doubt in my mind because the background was noisy, I had people cheering and shouting as my conversation with the organizers was going on. When the call dropped they called back again to say you are the winner.

“When I was boarding I didn’t pick the ticket reluctantly, I boldly picked the ticket. I actually knew that I was going to win the star prize. Because I committed it to God when I picked the ticket, this is not my first time I have been trying my luck in several promos including the Glo promo where I was shortlisted but I didn’t win. What motivated me is that I watched promos a lot on television, so when I bought the ticket I told God to do something in my life. To God be the glory, I have emerged the winner.”

Mr. Philemon Okeke, Director, Legal Administration and services, Project Xperts 360 Limited said the Board and Win promo was embarked upon due to the company’s desire to give back to the society. He said the promo was one of the company’s policies which have to do with community service.

“What prompt us into the promo was because we wanted to give back to the community, and we believe that we can’t give to God when we have not given to our neighbor. When we came in contact with Rivers State Transport Company, we discovered that they are about to do something that could reward their customers.  Of course, they are the biggest transport company in Rivers State and with their idea; we said we are ready to partner with them. We consulted the National Lottery Commission to legalize the whole process.  That was how we bought car and hung it in the park for customers to see that we are serious.

“With the draw today, we gave 1,000 branded shirts, umbrellas, pens and phones for consolation winners. But we thank God today that the winner of the star prize has emerged successfully. We have also hung another car for second edition; we want to thank the National Lottery Commission for assisting us from the beginning of the project till the end.”

Declaring the lottery fit, satisfactory and transparent, Mrs. Kate Ibekwe of the lottery commission, said the organizers met the requirements of  National Lottery Policy. “The organizers today made us proud because they have showcased what we have been preaching at the national lottery. We encourage people to participate in the lottery because it has been used for developmental project. I am satisfied and every customers or participants present will testify on the transparency of the lottery.

“We are against fraudster and we are aware that some people hide under one lottery or the other to extort money from the public. If anyone wants to legally organize a lottery, the procedure is to come to National Lottery Commission. And all you need is to pick a form it is a letter of intent, we don’t tell you what to do, you will tell us what you want to do in writing. We will tell you what it will take you to get the permit.  And when you have done this, we will ensure that the winner must get their prizes. We go by the rules of the game; we don’t tell you what to give to the winner you tell us what you will give them.”

  • Excitement as tap water returns to Ibadan

Excitement as tap water returns to Ibadan

Things are looking good for residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as public water taps that have remained dry for many years are now running again, thanks to the resuscitation of the two major sources of water supply to the city-Asejire and Eleyele water works by the state government. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports.

In Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the residents are in a happy mood, and they have many reasons to be so excited. Their water taps that have been running in fits and starts for many years are now running smoothly again thanks to the present administration in the state that has brought life back to the Asejire and Eleyele water works, the two major sources of public water supply to the city.

For more than seven years before the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration came on board in 2011, most parts of the city that used to enjoy tap water in their homes had no water due to the poor state of the two water projects.

Though previous administrations tried to resuscitate the facilities and provide the over three million residents of the ancient city with potable water, their efforts were certainly not good enough to address the biting water problem.

So acute was the shortage that many residents, especially women and children had to trek long distance from their homes with jerry cans and bowls on their heads in search of potable water, perhaps from the few boreholes and wells in the area.

And after several unfulfilled promises from past administrations, the residents, understandably, have learnt not to trust the government to provide them with water, but they were pleasantly surprised recently when they opened their taps at home, perhaps by accident, and water started running. It was pure excitement. Now homes connected to public water pipes are getting supply from the Oyo State Water Corporation and the people are happy.

Signs that things were getting back to normal was first noticed by The Nation when this correspondent noticed water oozing out from burst pipes in some parts of the city and technicians from the State Water Corporation fixing the fault, an indication that government had started pumping water into homes.

So excited were the residents to see their taps running that they have resorted to stockpiling the ‘essential’ commodity in big containers and jerry cans in anticipation of when the taps could go dry again, but that may not be any time soon as water has been flowing ceaselessly.

When The Nation went round the city, it was discovered that many of the pipes are no longer in good conditions having gone rust due to old age, and are leaking water. Though residents of the affected areas have made appeals to the water corporation to effect necessary repairs some have however resorted to self help where possible, by engaging the services of plumbers to fix the pipes and ensure constant supply.

It was gathered that in the past few months, the two major water works/dams-Asejire and Eleyele, had been undergoing overhauling by the state government to upgrade the facilities and meet the water needs of the people.

When The Nation visited the dams, extensive works had been carried out especially on Asejire where many of the old equipment have been replaced with new ones in an attempt to optimise the water production capacity of the facility. A new laboratory had been put in place equipped with modern gadgets while some equipment that were still in fairly good conditions were also refurbished. Some of the equipment already installed include the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, used for water analysis.

Besides, there was massive rehabilitation at the Asejire water scheme which has increased water production capacity of the scheme to over 80 percent.

Eight different High Lift Pumps were refurbished and replaced to enhance the volume of water pumped to the city from the Asejire water treatment Plant. With the new tools in place, workers were seen in high spirit working hard to deliver water to the people.

The project embarked upon by the state to urgently address the problem of water in the city was started around November 2012 and was completed in December 2013.

The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Adewale Adeoye explained that  before the inception of Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s administration, the Asejire water works was either not producing at all or functioning far below installed capacity, hence the water for distribution was very low.

“But when we came in, we took it as our first priority to provide potable water for the good people of Oyo State, especially residents of Ibadan. The governor then mandated the Ministry to see what can be done to salvage the system and we thank God that from the 10 per cent production at that time, the production has been raised to over 80 per cent. So, now we generate about 251.2 million cubic metres of water from Asejire Waterworks for the people of Ibadan. During the same period, all the pumps were rehabilitated so as to avoid a breakdown during the production process. As we were doing this we also rehabilitated the laboratory where we test the water to ensure that it meets the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard. The laboratory has the best equipment, and many people do come from outside to do their analysis to ascertain their own water safety.

“All the other facilities have also been put to over 80 per cent production capacity, the only major challenge is this electricity issue and the administration is trying as much as possible to address this.  We have met the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to give us a dedicated line so that we can produce enough water as we have no reason not to give water to the people. In addition to that we have standby generators but you know the cost of running diesel engine generators is very high. I will tell you that Asejire water is as good as what you find in Lagos, and Abuja”, the Commissioner said.

But unlike at Asejire, it is not all that rosy at the Eleyele Water Scheme which serves Eleyele, Ologuneru and environs.

The Dam, it was gathered is yet to recover from the extensive damaged it suffered during the August 26, 2011 flood disaster that wrecked havoc to one of its crucial component.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr Adeoye , while responding to the inherent problems at the Eleyele Dam, the second largest water scheme in the state, said the facility has been producing water but “ there is still a lot of rehabilitation work to be done.”

“If you remember, the flood of August 26th 2011 affected Eleyele dam. So, what happened is that we are producing water at Eleyele for human consumption but due to the flood, we cannot produce as much as we could because of the extensive damage caused by the natural disaster.

But we were able to put some remedial measures to produce water at least to ensure that the people do not suffer much until the repair work is done.

“Even as urgent as the rehabilitation of Eleyele Dam is, what we have done is just the feasibility study. Some days ago, the African Development Bank (ADB) brought the revised design to implement the corrective measure, and we are now set to commence repair work there. Even at that Eleyele dam is producing water but like Asejire we also the challenge of stable power supply. The dam is to serve the people of Ologuneru and other areas but due to expanding nature of the city, we don’t have enough pipes to cover these other areas. But we are working around the clock to ensure they are served including the new settlements.

“We have other schemes like the one in Oyo, Erelu water scheme, the one in Ogbomoso, Saki and other parts of Oyo state. All these schemes are working to distribute water to the people in the other parts of the state but the power challenge is still there. Thank God that the government has a relationship with Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to give us a dedicated line to ensure that we have an uninterrupted water supply”.

Speaking on constant pipe burst and water waste in the city, Engr Adeoye said “we have pipe burst because most of them are old.  Those pipes have been laid for the past 50 years.  But immediately any pipe burst was reported, we get our men to the area to repair and lay new pipes because it is not ideal for people to scoop water from that place because the water could be contaminated. So we don’t encourage it. The government like I said earlier is trying to change some of these pipes, we want to prevent pipe burst because we lose water, it does not get to the consumer, so we are trying hard to replace some of the damaged pipes”.

The turnaround in the water supply and the huge investment made by the government to achieve it is not lost on the residents.

According to Mr Matthew Adesokan who lives at Itasaku area of Ibadan, the government has done well to restore public water supply in the city after several years of hardship. Adesokan, a retired teacher recalled the good old days when tap water was fairly regular in Ibadan, saying that it was the duty of every government to provide basic needs, including potable water to its citizenry and any government that failed to do that is definitely a failure.

“At that time we knew which day of the week to expect water from our taps. And it was a regular routine. Every week, we had water on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, four days in  a week. And our wives used to fill our drums and other containers to store enough water to last till when the taps would run again. But suddenly, all that went away leaving the people to suffer. But, today the situation is gradually being restored and now we know that in a week, at least we do have tap water for two or three times/days. We thank our governor Ajimobi because he is trying his best to bring back the good old days again”, Adesokan said.

At Oje, Idi-Arere, Omitowoju, Inalende, Agodi, Mapo, Oke-Ado,Molete, Oke-Bola, Mokola , Challenge, Ring Road and some other parts of Ibadan the situation was not different as the taps are running.

It was indeed a great rejoicing for the people of the city as they witnessed renewed effort on the part of  the government to tackle the incessant problem of water in the state.

But, not all have started benefiting from this massive government investment as some residents who live in newly developed areas still nurse the hope of getting tap water.

A 68 year old trader and resident of a suburb of Ologuneru, Deacon Samson Odiaka has meanwhile, pleaded with the government to extend pipe water to his area where a large population is springing up.

“We know that the government has not extended pipe to these new areas, the city is expanding fast, it is only the old areas that were piped. But help us tell the government to try and pipe these areas too, we are equally suffering from water” Deacon Odiaka who owns a building in the area pleaded.
