  • Utomi urges executives on ethics

    A political economy and management expert, Prof. Pat Utomi, said for leaders to command the respect of the international community, they must imbibe the ethical principles governing global relations.

    He spoke at a seminar by Poise Nigeria at Oriental Hotel, Lagos

    He said Nigerian leaders should exhibit the values of integrity and good judgment, in addition to expertise in their various fields.

    Defining a global leader, the Human Resources Executive, MTN, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola, noted that “competence in a job is only an infinitesimal part of the needed criteria”.

    She said a global executive must possess what she described as a corporate citizenship, which implies a high degree of “versatility and agile-mindedness”.

    She added that leaders needed to be highly intelligent emotionally, socially and intellectually, in order to create, shape and transform the world.

    In his paper, the Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr. Seni Adetu, said a leader must be global-minded to succeed in today’s world.

    Adetu, who was represented by Mr. Michael Onuoha, Head of Public Sector, Guinness Nig. Plc, further said only solutions that had been provided by a collaborative and multicultural approach would transcend time.

  • FG to fund burials of NANS executives

    •Pay bills of survivors

    The Federal Govern-ment has agreed to foot the burial expenses of the five executive national officers of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who died last week in a ghastly auto crash.

    The NANS executives were on their way to the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) in AkwaIbom State to mediate on the crisis that the institution when their vehicle ran into an oncoming trailer at Ariamin Ikwuano council area of Abia State.

    Five died immediately while seven others were wounded.

    Speaking in Umuahia when she visited the surviving members of the executives, the minister of education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, said that the Federal Government has concluded plans to take care of the burial fees for the dead.

    She added that the medical bills of the surviving NANS executives will also be borne by the government.

    Rufai, who was in the state to ascertain the condition of the survivors, said that she was happy with their recovery rate.

    She extended the condolences of President Goodluck Jonathan to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.

    Responding on behalf of the survivors, Benjamin Adekunle thanked Jonathan for showing concern to their plight and the gestures extended to them since the accident occurred.

    Adekunle noted that Jonathan has never relented in the welfare of Nigerian students, adding that he has done well in his transformation agenda.

    He regretted the death of his colleagues and prayed for the repose of their souls, adding that they died in the service of students in the nation.

    Five of the survivors have been discharged, while the two in the hospital are Uchenna Ogwo from Federal Polytechnic Oko who have been moved from the casualty ward and Anumodo Chidebere still in the intensive care unit of the Federal Medical Centre.

     

  • New executives for PRCAN

    A new executive committee for the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) has assumed office to deliver “Bigger and better association that articulates and serves the overall best interest of members in key areas of advocacy, professionalism and support for growth of PR business”.

    Led by Mr Chido B Nwakanma of Blueflower Limited as President, members of the executive committee include Mr John Ehiguese of Mediacraft Associates, Vice President; Mr Muyiwa Akintunde, Leap Communications, General Secretary; Mr Tola Odusote, CMC Connect, Assistant General Secretary; and Mr Israel Jaiye Opayemi, Chain Reactions Limited, Publicity Secretary. The two past presidents, Mr Emeka Maduegbuna and Dr Phil Osagie are ex-officio members.

    The executive emerged at the second Annual General Meeting of PRCAN held at Hotel 1960 Eagles Park in Ikeja. Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Registrar Dr. Steve Adebayo observed the elections.

    According to the new PRCAN president, “deliberate policy actions and legislation have underpinned growth of professions; Public Relations needs policy and legislative support to grow.” As such, PRCAN would adopt advocacy visits to key government officials at Federal, state and local government levels to raise awareness and the right policy environment that would create jobs for member firms. The visits would also enable these key stakeholders realise as well as implement the law.

    PRCAN is a creation of a bye law of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations. It groups together agencies that render public relations consultancy services. By the NIPR Act, only persons registered with NIPR are eligible to practise public relations in Nigeria. For companies, only those registered with PRCAN, whose key executives must be members of NIPR, are eligible to offer public relations services and earn income for it.

  • Editorial CDS group elects new executives

    The Editorial Community Development Service (CDS) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abuja chapter, has elected new executive. The open-ballot election took place under the supervision of NYSC officials.

    Before the election started, the CDS supervisor, Mrs Esther Bitrus, addressed the contestants and voters to elect people based on credibility. When the result of the poll was announced, Hussani Dikka was returned as the president.

    Others were Olusola Similoluwa, Vice President, Kenneth Mudia, General Secretary, Asta Yahaya, Assistant General Secretary, Chinwe Madubuike, News Editor 1, Mobolaji Oyeyipo, News Editor 2, Emmanuel Abimbola, Provost and Som Tochukwu, Technical Manager.

    Hussani thanked his colleagues for voting him and promised to discharge his duties accordingly.

    In his address, the outgoing president of the CDS, Idongesit Udoh, thanked all the Corps members for their support given to his administration.
