  • FTAN holds exhibition

THE 2016 edition of the Nigerian Tourism Investors’ Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE) organized by the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) was held last week in Abuja.  The event was organized by the FTAN  for the public  to interact and look at investment opportunities in Nigerian tourism and discuss its challenges and the way forward.

The two-day event, which had reasonable attendance by federal government agencies, states and private sector  participation, had presentations by the National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) and the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC).

In his welcome address, the FTAN president, Chief Tomi Akingbogun, said the forum offered states and council areas the opportunity to come and showcase their potential to investors.

He said: “NTIFE is the right place for all local governments, state governments  and the federal government to come and compete  for private investors. Our expectation is that all states and  council areas will come here to show us the private investors, what relative advantages they have for us in different areas.

“Is it easy access to land or documentations, is it tax holidays for new businesses, is it trained labour and so on?

“We the private sector expects to be courted to invest in Nigeria and  different areas of administration. It is only through our several investments that government can generate revenue through taxes, create employment and reduce crime.”.

Delivering his paper at the event, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said tourism has become a key sector of the economy of many countries, and Nigeria, with its huge population of 170 million, can benefit from it.

He said further: “As a labour intensive industry, tourism has the potential to create more jobs per unit of investment than most other industries. The sector also has the potential to be a sustainable engine for economic growth and diversification. It is a major asset to Nigeria’s quest to become one of the twenty largest economies in the world by year 2020 which is barely four years from now.

“Therefore, there is the need for urgency, if the country is to realize its vision. Permit me to observe that the tourism industry generally is assuming increasing importance in most countries of the world because of its many facets which serve as tools for economic recovery, diversification and development. It enhances women’s economic opportunities, promotes their effective control over resources and offers safe spaces for women and girls to develop support networks and life skills.

“For individual countries, the advantage of the tourism sector lies in its employment-creating potential and the challenge it presents for the enhancement of the quality of the environment. Through the development of the tourism sector, a country could become well placed to promote the development of its traditional cottage industries, tourist attractions and even the people’s lifestyle and heritage to the world at large.

“I can confidently state that even nowadays, as countries are battling to overcome the adverse effects of crisis, resulting from severe recession and worsening economic conditions, tourism could be one of the pillars which, if properly supported by governments globally, could stimulate economic recovery, development and a brighter tomorrow for all.”

  • Doctors stage exhibition on information, personnel in health services

The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria and the Guild of Medical Directors are holding an exhibition and conference to showcase  what is happening in the Nigerian health sector.

The exhibition which will take place next Monday and end the following day, has its theme, “All things medical (ATM)’’.

A renowned neurosurgeon and Chief Medical Director of the first private neurosurgical centre in Nigeria, Memphys, Prof Sam Ohaegbulam, said the exhibition was timely as information and statistics about what is available in Nigeria is the bedrock of a viable and functional healthcare system.

“People keep asking, where can we do this or that in Nigeria? Or who can do this procedure or that operation in Nigeria? Then, they say, we did not know that this was available in Nigeria!’

Unfortunately, he said, there were huge risks for the unwary in medical care in Nigeria as many people end up patronising dangerous establishments and charlatans simply because they have no clear knowledge of where the real doctors are.

Citing an example, Ohaegbulem revealed that the Ogun State government had closed three hospitals in Ifo local government area after two pregnant women died which made the government to accuse the hospitals of lacking the competence to treat patients.

According to the neurosurgeon, “there is the issue with medical tourism. Doctors have highlighted the dangers of going to places, such as India, South Africa, United Kingdom and Egypt for treatment. They “pointed out the problems of traveling to these countries without proper information about the doctors, their qualifications and experience. In effect, running to India is not the solution, especially if what you need is in Sokoto.”

Also the Medical Director, Alliance Hospital, Abuja, Dr Chris Otabor, emphasised the need for more information about high quality healthcare personnel and facilities in Nigeria.

“We need positive documentation of the good practices and an end to the bad practices. We have to help our health centres, government hospitals or even private hospitals to be the best they can be.

He added that Nigeria needs a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that is effective so that all citizens can receive reasonable health care.

Otabor stressed that with an effective national health Insurance, more revenue would be available to healthcare and hospitals would be better equipped to provide modern services.

“Once we put our house, the need for medical missions, medical tourism, etc, would consequently diminish. Government has to harmonise the nation’s health sector by improving on facilities for research and training, and increased capacity to take care of all the emergencies and the challenges that we have in the country. From here the nation could further expand and upgrade to other areas.

“Say stop to medical tourism. Join us to stop losing huge resources that is better applied to help our own development. We must encourage the development of our own local health care industry and the first step is ATM. Thereafter, we must put an end to medical tourism. Government should not sponsor anybody to go and get treatment abroad unless, of course, that treatment is what we cannot offer, “he added.

A neurosurgeon with Spine Fixed in Abuja, Dr Biodun Ogungbo,  identified many specialist hospitals which provide specialist care in Nigeria.

For instance, he said, “here in Abuja, there are a few hospitals you should know about. Zenith Kidney Centre does just that: looks after your kidneys and performs dialysis/kidney transplants as you may require. Kelina Hospital in Gwarinpa is a foremost urology centre in Abuja with state of the art. Similarly, Chivar Hospital is also well equipped with highly trained personnel and equipment for your prostate troubles’’.

According to him, people who have infertility issues can be rest assured at Nordica Fertility clinic and Bridge Clinic who have helped thousands of women complete their families.

“Specialist gynaecological centres such as Nisa Premier Hospital, Abuja, Southshore Womens’ Clinic in Lagos and King’s Care Hospital in Abuja provide great care and sort out women’s troubles. Eye problems are the focus of Eye Foundation and Florida Eye Clinic. You see?”

  • OTC 2016 attendance, exhibition dip over oil price slump

OTC 2016 attendance, exhibition dip over oil price slump

    • As NNPC cuts turnout by over 50%

The global oil price plunge had a negative impact on this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) attendance and exhibition.

More than 68,000 from 120 countries attended against last year’s 94,700 attendees from 130 countries, while 2,500 companies participated in the exhibition against 2,682 in 2015.

The Nation also learnt that due to the dwindling revenue because of fall in oil prices, representations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the oil ministry, at the conference, were slashed by over 50 per cent.

However, there were the usual exchange of ideas and presentation of papers on how to advance scientific and technical knowledge for safe, environmentally friendly operation and sustainable development of offshore oil and gas resources.

The OTC Chairman, Mr. Joe Fowler, lamented the current industry reality, which is in its second year.  He however, stated that nearly 300 were new exhibitors, and international companies made up 51 per cent of the exhibitors. “As it has since 1969, the world came to OTC to make critical decisions, share ideas and develop business partnerships to meet global energy demands.

“The commitment from OTC’s volunteers and staff ensured, regardless of the price of oil per barrel, that OTC upheld its unwavering commitment to delivering attendees unparalleled information on new technologies and global developments. Also, revenue from OTC directly benefits the member programmes of its 13 nonprofit sponsoring organizations.”

OTC 2016 featured 11 panel sessions,24 executive keynote presentations at luncheons and breakfasts, and more than 325 technical paper presentations. Speakers including international and national oil companies; federal and regional government officials; and academic, presented their views on a wide variety of topics, including future industry directions, operational integrity and risk management.

The industry downturn also affected Nigerian companies that had set up exhibition stands to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the country. Besides, unlike last year, the Nigerian pavilion had few exhibitors.

Kachikwu who was represented by NNPC’s Group Executive Director, Gas and Power, Mr. Saidu Muhammad while opening the Nigerian pavilion said: “There is need for us to look inwards and see how we can optimise cost to reduce the cost of production per barrel so that we can remain afloat.

“You cannot reduce cost of production if you do not have Nigerian expertise in development of procurement materials.”

The Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Bank Anthony Okoroafor stated that the association in partnership with the NNPC was considering measures to certify the competencies of companies that execute projects in the country’s petroleum industry. He also called for the deployment of about $600 million that has accrued to the Nigerian Content Fund (NCF) for upgrade of the industry’s in-country capacity.
