  • Bus crushes expectant mum

    n unidentified woman was yesterday killed by a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle while crossing the road.

    The accident occurred around 1pm near Irawo bus stop, Ajegunle, on Mile 12/Ikorodu Road.

    An eyewitness said the expectant mother lived at Thomas Street, Irawo. She was attempting to cross the road to see her sister, who lives on the other side of the expressway.

    It was gathered that she was to get married this weekend.

    The source said the woman ran into the bus, which was coming from Ikorodu.

    It was learnt that the driver ran to Irawo Police Station to report the accident.

    Youths vandalised the bus.

    The accident caused gridlock on the expressway, as motorists tried to avoid the trouble spot.

    Police from Irawo station moved in and dispersed the crowd. They kept the driver in their custody, while the bus was taken to their station.

    Mr Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director of Primero Transport Service,  confirmed the accident.

    He said last night that the police had brought the situation under control.

  • Expectant mum, husband die of food poisoning

    AN expectant mother and her husband died in Swali, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, at the weekend, after eating a meal suspected to have been poisoned.

    A 10-year-old boy, Obinna Ogbani, living with them, also died.

    The Nation learnt the food was allegedly prepared by the 35-year-old woman, identified as Mrs. Nkem Igwenta.

    The husband, Orji Igwenta, and Obinna, said to be Igwenta’s cousin, were found dead after eating the poisoned food.

    Eyewitnesses said two rats, which reportedly ate the remnants, also died.

    It was gathered neighbours, who were thrown into mourning on Saturday afternoon, alerted the police.

    A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Tragedy has occurred at Winners Road, Swali. It was a black afternoon for us, as a family was killed by food poison.

    “A man, his expectant wife and a 10-year-old boy living with them died. How their food was poisoned is still a mystery till now. They died after dinner. The meal was prepared by the wife. Even two rats that ate the remnants also died. Vengeance belongs to God if it was done by enemies.”

    Police spokesman Asinim Butswat confirmed the incident.

    He described their death as sudden and unnatural.

  • Expectant mum cries out over husband’s death

    A 34-year-old expectant mother, Mrs. Ekaette Nnonno, whose husband was allegedly killed by the Compliance and Monitoring Team attached to Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Transport and Petroleum Resources, has cried out for help.

    Nnonno, a mother of five, implored the government to take over the welfare and education of her children, who were allegedly rendered fatherless by activities of a task force working for the ministry.

    The Nation reports the widow’s husband, 38-year-old Akaninyene Nnonno, an indigene of Ikot Edung in Ibiono Ibom Local Government, was allegedly killed by task force officials while chasing an Akwa Ibom Transport Corporation (AKTC) driver.

    Transport and Petroleum Commissioner Orman Esin described what happened as an accident.

    He said: “What happened was an accident involving a driver, members of our team and the victim. We have met the bereaved family and discussed how to assist them. Everyone is satisfied and happy.”   Police spokesman McDon Odiko promised to confirm any arrest in connection with the accident.

    An expectant mother, her husband and two children were yesterday burnt to death in their Lagos home.

    The incident occurred at 13, Buraimoh Street, Bariga at the wee hours of the day.

    Forty-one-year-old Kenneth Eze, his wife, Favour and their daughters Miracle and Marvellous were sleeping in their shop when the fire broke out.

    Kenneth, who ran a drug outlet, resided in his aluminium shop with his family.

    Besides, the wife reportedly went into force labour and delivered still birth which  the fire.

    Two other shops, a tailoring centre and a provision store attached to the chemist’s store were also razed by the inferno.

    Neighbours who were alarmed by their screaming said the metallic component of the burglary secured shop made it difficult to render timely assistance.

    They were said to have died from burns and suffocation from the fire.

    While some residents blamed the outbreak on electric surge, others claimed it was caused by a lit candle that was left unattended.

    The Nation learnt Eze, an Imo state indigene, was set to spend the Christmas holiday at his newly built home in Ikorodu before the incident.

    While a crowd of sympathisers gathered before the shops, hoodlums besieged the heap of ruins, scavenging useful materials.

    However, the fire did not affect the main bungalow building situated in the same compound with the shops.

    Eze’s former boss, who didn’t want her name, disclosed said he was an honest and diligent man, who gave his time to the service of God.

    She said: “When we spoke, he told me he had issues with his Landlord. So he said he would move to his new house by the 27th of this month. The next thing was that I was called about his death. When I asked people, they said the electric sparks was the cause. Kenneth was a very good boy. He made me happy. He never lied and he never stole from me. He was passionate about God because I encouraged him to be born-again. In fact, he was already a pastor before I settled him. Even after he left my control, I still narrate his case to my children because of his good records. The person who made me stay in Lagos. When you call him, he would respond and you could take his word.”

    The deceased’s relative said: “When the fire broke out, it displaced all of them in different parts of the shop. People who heard him crying for help could not assist. They couldn’t near him because of naked wire. They just watched the family die helplessly. It was just few days to settling in his home. “

    A member of the World Harvest Church where Eze pastored, Ndukwu said: “My wife called me this morning around 11:30 asking if I learnt about the incident. I was shocked as she said the whole family died. We are only here to help gather any necessary remnants from the ruins. I honestly don’t know how I feel about the incident. According to people, he struggled to escape the fire but the electric surge held him back.”

    The remains of the deceased have been taken to Imo State for burial.

    Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe said the fire would have wreaked more havoc but for quick response from emergency workers.

    He said investigations would be conducted into the cause of the outbreak.

    They were only a few days old in the United States. Tunde Adepegba, his wife Oluwayemisi , who is seven-month pregnant, and their two chidlren, arrived the U.S. in April. But on April 26, Adepegba died in a bus. His wife has sobbed her heart out since then.

    Mrs. Adepegba, who has two daughters aged two and eight, had barely spent 12 hours with her husband when he was picked up dead inside a metro bus.

    The late Adepegba, a computer systems analyst, suffered a suspected heart attack while inside a metro bus in Annapolis area of Maryland and died with no help until the bus driver got to a final stop and came for him.

    The late Adepegba’s burial will cost about $10,000, which the wife does not have. A gofundme account has been set up for her husband burial.

    A deputy editor with THISDAY newspaper, Olawale Olaleye, who has been part of the fundraiser, wrote on his facebook wall: “This is no good news but a time I need the Nigerian in us to act true to type. Sadly, he left behind a pregnant wife. It is such a pathetic situation. But we can’t go on and on brooding over what we can’t change. This is an appeal for his burial, which is a bit expensive in the U.S and of course, whatever is left of this will be given to the pregnant wife.”

    A columnist with THISDAY newspaper, Adeola Akinremi, who is  in the US and has seen the family of the deceased, said: “It is a sad story.  The gofundme.com is probably the first place to start, but you can also reach out to the woman directly.”

    Mrs Adepegba and her children are in Randallstown, Maryland, United States, where a Good Samaritan is accommodating them.

    An expectant mother was yesterday crushed to death at Obadore community on Lasu-Iba Road.
    The accident occurred around 3:30pm when a Toyota Camry marked FKJ181EG lost control.
    The lone occupant of the vehicle, it was gathered, was injured and was rushed to hospital.
    The vehicle was said to have somersaulted several times, before skidding off its lane on the link bridge to crush the woman.
    According to passersby, the woman was carrying a gas cylinder, probably going to a nearby station to refill.
    Her body was evacuated by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives who were passing by.

  • Expectant mum seeks dissolution of 22-year-old marriage

    An expectant mother, Biola Gani, has requested the court to dissolve her 22-year-old marriage.

    In a case filed at a Grade C Customary Court sitting in Lagelu Local Government, Iyana-offa, Gani urged the court to end the marriage, which had produced three children, on account of her husband’s infidelity and irresponsibility, which she claimed drove her into another man’s arms.

    She accused her husband of making her uncomfortable, which led her to begin another relationship with Munmodu Adeyemo.

    But her husband, Kadir Ajala, urged the court not to grant her request, saying he loves her and is responsible for her pregnancy.

    Ajala and Adeyemo belong to the same camp of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in the area.

    Gani, who preferred to be addressed in her maiden name, accused Ajala of neglecting her and the children.

    She told the court that for a long time, Ajala had stopped taking care of the family, which made her seek emotional and financial succour elsewhere.

    “Four other women have children for him and he has refused to take care of them.

    “I am not comfortable in the marriage again. I have packed out of his house long before I started dating Munmodu Adeyemo.

    “I am not interested in my husband again, he only got me pregnant, he is not taking care of me and even threatened to kill me anytime I complain. We have been married for 22years but I don’t want him again”, she told the court.

    In his submission, Ajala urged the court not to separate them because they have three children

    He said he had warned his wife not to join OPC but she refused and that his life is being threatened.

    “I know I am the one responsible for her pregnancy. Please, help me beg  my wife not to leave me because I love her so much and I have nothing against her or her about her attitude,” he told the court.

    In his ruling, Deputy President of the court, Omoniyi Supo, adjourned the case till Wednesday for further hearing.

  • Expectant mum killed, four injured in cult clash

    An expectant mother  was shot dead and four others were injured, at the weekend, during a cult clash at Ebute-Meta.

    It was gathered that the fight between the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities followed the killing of a member of one of the gangs.

    His colleagues were said to have gone after the other gang, wreaking havoc Jebba Street.

    The injured have been taken to hospital.

    It was gathered that the gang was planning another attack yesterday afternoon, before the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) for Ebute-Meta Station, Saheed Quadri, a Superintendent of Police (SP), received a tip-off and swooped on them.

    One of the gang members identified as Baba Jara was arrested at their hideout in Kano/Odunfa.

    It was learnt that there was jubilation over Jara’s arrest, by residents, who  described him as an armed robber and one of the late Sunday Terror’s strong men.

    Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, Superitendent, said the suspect was assiting with investigation.

    She said: “Yes, I confirm that at about 2:45pm on Friday, clues led the DPO to a notorious member of the gang. He was arrested at Kano/Odunfa, Ebute-Meta. The suspect was the gang’s armourer. He confessed to being a member of the late Sunday Terror’s gang. He also said that their gang led by one Itakun, shot five persons at Jebba Street, killing a woman. We shall not relent till we flush them out. Effort is ongoing to arrest the other members.”

    Man’s bid to rape expectant mum’s fails

    The police yesterday arraigned a 25-year-old man, Ismail Akorede, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged attempted rape of an expectant mum, Busayo Olamide.

    Akorede is facing a one-count charge of attempted rape.

    Prosecuting Inspector George Nwosu told the court that the accused committed the offence last Monday around 8pm at Masaka Street, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos.

    Nwosu said the accused unlawful entered into Olamide’s apartment with the intent to rape her.

    He said: “The accused sneaked into the room of the complainant with intent to have carnal knowledge of her while she was sleeping.

    “He unzipped his trouser, removed the complainant’s wrapper and was about to penetrate when she suddenly woke up and raised alarm.

    “All the residents of the compound rushed out to rescue the complainant.

    “The accused was arrested when he wanted to escape and handed over to the police.”

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Akorede pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate A.A Adesanya granted him N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Adesanya adjourned the case till September 5.

  • Drunk driver kills expectant mum, six others

    A driver, suspected to have been drunk, crashed his car into a tricycle and scores of commuters at the weekend, killing an expectant mother and six others.

    The incident occurred at Opolo, a suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

    Sources identified one of the victims as Miss Akpotu Olorogun, a native of Ammassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

    The driver reportedly fled the scene. Residents said some of the victims had been buried according to Islamic rites.

    Police spokesman Alex Akhigbe confirmed the incident. He said efforts were on to arrest the driver.

    The police are searching also for members of a gang, who reportedly beheaded a 40-year-old woman, Lydia David.

    The deceased was reportedly attacked in a bush behind the state-owned Palm Estate at Azikoro in Yenagoa.

    The incident occurred three weeks after the eyes of a 34-year-old mentally challenged woman were removed by suspected ritualists at the popular Swali Market in Yenagoa.

    Mrs. David’s headless body, according to the Divisional Police Officer of Azikoro, Fidelis Ofuna, was found by her family.

    Ofuna said family members launched the search when the deceased did not return home at night.

    The victim, a mother of five, was an indigene of Ughelli in Delta State.

    It was learnt that she left home at  3pm to inspect her fishing traps at a swamp.

    Her son, Junior, said the family became worried when his mother did not return home at 8pm.

    He said: “It was strange. My father raised the alarm and a search party was organised.

    “We mobilised and searched the bushes and later discover her headless body.”

    It was gathered that the  head was discovered few days later at an uncompleted building on Goodnews Street in Azikoro.

    Akhigbe confirmed the development and said the police had begun investigation.
