Explosion: Traders ‘arrest’ gas shop owner

    • ‘We incurred losses due to negligence’

Aggrieved traders whose wares got burnt in the Tuesday night’s explosion at Iju-Ishaga have taken the gas shop owner to the police.

The Nation reports that the atmosphere at Iju Ishaga Police Station was chaotic as victims of the inferno insisted that they suffered losses because of the negligence of the shop owner.

Fifty lock-up shops built on two rows were razed and several millions of naira goods damaged after a leaking gas ignited fire around 9pm at Ogun Street by Balogun Bus Stop.

Initial reports varied on the cause of the explosion. While an account claimed it was caused by a tanker offloading gas at a nearby petrol station. Another indicated that the fire erupted following the leakage of a gas head during the offloading of six 75-50(kg) gas cylinders from a mini truck to a gas shop.

The traders who decried the economic situation in the country, said their goods would have been spared if the owner of the gas shop did his due diligence.

They also blamed the government for allowing the sale of cooking gas in a place like that, noting that there were three shops trading on the item there which compounded the fire.

The Nation reports that there have been incessant cases of cooking gas explosion across the state, with many of them resulting in deaths and injuries to people.

It was gathered that among the affected shops was a big supermarket whose owner only restocked goods the previous day.

While the shop owners lamented their losses at the police station, scavengers trooped to the site to rummage the debris in search of spoils.

They excitedly scattered the ruins as they picked out metals and plastics.

Confirming that the explosion started from one of the gas retail shops, a resident, Samuel Oguntoye, said the nearby petrol station was instrumental in the timely dousing of the fire.

“There are three gas retail shops here. It was one of them that was refilling its cylinders. It is not true that it was the gas station that was offloading a tanker. Instead, the staffers at the gas station brought out all their fire extinguishers and chemicals which were used to put out the fire before the government firemen got here,” he said.

Another resident, Kingsley Chieze, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was at a bar located a few metres away when the gas explosion occurred.

He corroborated the account that the explosion started from a gas retail shop, adding that it  “sounded like a bomb blast. It was accompanied by yellow  flames”.

He said that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene about 45 minutes after the explosion, adding that they brought in their expertise to contain the situation.

Another eyewitness, who identified himself simply as David, hailed the staff of a Kerosene filling station located about two poles away from the scene of the gas explosion.

David said the staff used water, chemicals, fire extinguishers and everything in their arsenal to stop the fire from spreading before officials of the Lagos fire service arrived.

Meanwhile, scores of students and workers were Wednesday morning stranded in that axis following the closure of the road by rescuers to prevent secondary emergency.

Taking advantage of the unfortunate incident, commercial buses hiked their fares, further making things difficult for residents rushing to work, school and their places of businesses.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos Office Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Ibrahim Farinloye, said no casualty was recorded.

He urged residents in the area to remain calm as the situation was under control.

“The gas explosion at Oguns Street, Balogun Bus Stop has been brought under complete control of the Lagos State Fire Service.

“It was reported that a store with cooking gas cylinders exploded after the restoration of electricity.”

He said the explosion, according to the reports received, was as a result of the gas-laden truck coming in contact with a fallen high tension cable while it was trying to offload.

He confirmed that about 50 shops were affected by the explosion but added that the estimated value of the losses incurred were yet unknown.

Farinloye also confirmed there was another gas explosion at Oke-Afa in Ejigbo LGA, which was swiftly contained, adding that no life was lost and no injury was recorded.

Ibadan explosion: Oyo monarchs meet Makinde

    • Back fight against illegal mining

Traditional rulers from across the five geopolitical zones of Oyo State have declared support for the state government in its fight against illegal mining in different parts of the state.

The monarchs spoke while briefing reporters at the news conference room of the Governor’s Office shortly after a closed door meeting with the governor.

Speaking on behalf of the visitors, the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olusola Alao, hailed Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as his “swift response” to the explosion that rocked Ibadan last week, while also commiserating with the victims.

Other traditional rulers in attendance include, Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, who was represented by Oba Tajudeen Ajibola and Oba Hamidu Ajibade; the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Sefiu Oyebola and the Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi.

Others are, Onpetu of Ijeruland, Oba Sunday Oyediran; Olu of Igboora, Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye and Akibio of Ilora, Oba Steven Oyeniyi; Iba of Kisi, Oba Moshod Lawal; Bashorun of Oyo, High Chief Akinade Ayoola and Onilala of Lanlate, Oba Sunday Oladejo.

Recall that the Tuesday explosion, which rocked Dejo Oyelese Street, Adeyi Area, Old Bodija, Ibadan left in its trail, five fatalities, and property worth hundreds of millions lost among others.

Preliminary investigations fingered dynamite stored up by illegal miners as the immediate cause of the explosion.

While commiserating with the governor and the people of the state, the monarch said traditional rulers in the state have resolved to deepen their support for the state government in terms of communication and sharing of intelligence in order to curb the menace of illegal mining in the state.

The monarch lauded the governor for being proactive in his approach to disaster management most especially in the recent explosion that has left some dead and many injured.

He added that the traditional rulers swung into action after the incident of the Ibadan explosion and have identified critical areas that require urgent supportive attention.

He listed the identified areas to include security lapse, medical, and humanitarian challenges, noting however, that Governor Makinde has already put measures in place to address them adequately and that the monarchs were proud of the governor.

He said: “We’ve been able to identify three tracks, first is the issue of some security lapses, medical and humanitarian challenges. All these three tracks, the governor has put adequate measures in place to address them.

“Also, he has briefed us how has been working in collaboration with the Federal Government, to be precise, the President of Nigeria. And also, the Federal Government has sent relevant agencies to liaise with the state government in order to mitigate the damage and try as much as possible to do their best to cushion the effects of the explosion.

“On our part, we’ve been able to come up with views with the state government, all of us as traditional rulers across the five geopolitical zones of Oyo state, whereby, we’ve resolved to provide more support for government in terms of communication and sharing of intelligence to curb the issue of illegal mining.

  • Bodija explosion; Neighbourhood responsibility or members’ irresponsibility?

Bodija explosion; Neighbourhood responsibility or members’ irresponsibility?

Hurray for rescue of the Al-Kadriyah victims, sisters of murdered Nabeeha. A callous killing demanding we have a paid informants’ network, IT and anti-terrorism structures.

The Bodija, Ibadan explosion killed Fellow Nigerian citizens, injured many, destroyed about 20 houses, some uninhabitable and condemned, damaged 50-100 buildings, caused actual heart attack and death and terrified thousands. For me, the huge explosion suggested a kitchen gas explosion as the house shook and some small debris fell onto the roof. I ran downstairs to find my wife in the sitting room equally alarmed. There was no problem in the kitchen. We went outside. All normal. Nothing in the neighbourhood. So, where was it from?

Then reports flowed like an internet river of disinformation, led by ‘Fake News Experts’ swearing it was gas, petrol tanker and then bomb. It was miners, political, incompetence or neighbourhood watch failure. We await the investigative report.

If the explosion had been just one kilometre away from ground zero, it would have impacted Mokola, Sango with 500+ bodies due to higher population density. So, should we also be grateful that whatever error, omission or commission, was committed, it did not involve those areas of mass humanity? Yes!

Our hearts go out to the families of the killed and injured ones, suffering unimaginably. There is and will remain Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, PTSD, beyond what anyone can imagine, predict or prevent with present and long-term therapy for the lead-weight, heartfelt, gut-wrenching, stomach-churning grieving on-going in families as you read this. Everyone affected should be encouraged to utilise any mental health support organisation available including, Asido Foundation [pls. Google ], of which I am a Trustee [full disclosure, I am not looking for anyone’s money], and individual psychiatrists and clinical psychologists offering themselves or are identified for this long-term purpose. Beyond fear, terror, despair and real anger at those, as yet ‘unknown’ perpetrators, be they innocent, passively guilty or genuinely guilty, there are other issues.

There is the very real, immediate and long-term additional cost and consequence of a ground zero explosion crime scene, closed down for samples for international terrorism testing, collapse of the destruction, clearing of the mangled debris, repairs if possible and for many, the construction of completely new structures. Hopefully the exemplary authorities in government buildings controlling property in Bodija, will be encouraged by the governor and instructed to be very sympathetic and not see the disaster as ‘Manna from heaven’ to delay or [God Forbid] extort. Instead, it should be a call to deliver exemplary normal accepted service to innocent and mostly elderly retired poorly pensioned victims, largely depending on their children,  and for authorities to be ‘Faithful, Loyal, Honest and Just’ in their dealing with families of the ‘Ibadan Explosion Victims’ or ‘Bodija Explosion Victims’, whichever it becomes in future history books.

Neighbourhood authorities are in focus as being associated or complicit by negligence with the explosion. Was it their own failure, or a security failure, which led to the explosion? I can make certain clarifications having been involved in Bodija Neighbourhood Associations since 1981 to date including patrolling at night. Neighbourhood associations depend entirely on the level of dedicated energetic involvement of minds, bodies and money of the dwellers. Sadly, too many dwellers do nothing, may or may not drop money and run away from work or are actually hostile, negative or toxic, poisoning neighbourhood relationships and stunting neighbourhood growth. They see the paid guards, unpaid by the truants throughout the year. The truants are unresponsive to good members who fund the N150-200+k /month or N1.75-2.4m annually to actually pay salaries of gatemen. What callousness.

Read Also: Court adjourns Saraki’s suit against EFCC, ICPC, others

But the Neighbourhood Association executive members cannot force un-responding refusers to pay. They can only appeal/beg for payment with no results. Even school/business/corporate members refuse/delay payments cruelly. So, most Neighbourhood Associations are maintained by a few dedicated realistic Fellow Nigerians probably just 20-30 out of 100 houses/flats/businesses in any neighbourhood while most just ‘siddon-look’!

So, what stops anyone keeping dangerous things in neighbourhoods? Nothing. Neighbourhood associations have weakest links with too many refusing participation and active membership. But they are happy to use the gatemen, paid by others, to open the gate, even late. The weakest link is in neighbourhood dwellers out-rightly refusing to join the association or joining in name but no action. They are unavailable, their gate locked, permanent absentees at monthly meetings, refusing to pay even cheap dues [N1-4k/month] dues and Christmas/New Year Get-together levies and Project Support [road bumps to stop killing children and residents, pothole filling, gatehouse building and repairs. But they call police and make trouble when the gatemen, paid by few members, fail to open the gate for their visitors in a timely servile manner.

Know that other bad-minded, serially intentional law-breaking members, can be model members, under the radar,  sometimes paying monthly as-and-when dues and  ‘donations’ and parade as active Neighbourhood Association members and friends of local and state security and may be awarded ‘Exemplary Neighbourhood Association Members’, while also criminally ‘open-secretly’ explosive-stockpiling in an obvious ‘zero-explosive stockpiling’ patrolled residential neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood associations are hamstrung, with mostly older women and men, un-empowered, have no authority, but are truly worthy of great praise in the fight against robbery and terrorism. Shame on you/your company/school/ business if you do not voluntarily and timely, without being begged, support your Neighbourhood Association with your presence, dues and support.  Blame yourself, not the Neighbourhood Association. Act Responsibly.
