  • Ondo 2020: Who gets PDP ticket?

Three chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State – Eyitayo Jegede, Sola Ebiseni and Eddy Olafeso–are struggling for the party’s governorship ticket. Who gets the flag? Deputy Editor (Daily) EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the preparations for the shadow poll.

Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing for next year’s election. It’s performance at the last presidential and National Assembly elections was the elixir of hope. Although the party later performed woefully during the House of Assembly polls, the precious electoral gains were not wiped out.

Many believe that Ondo PDP should put its house in order, if it intends to make an impact in the election. The major challenge confronting the party is zoning. But, in the chapter, there is also a leadership vaccum. Party leaders in the mould of the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, Dr. Segun Mimiko, who had left the party, and Chief Ali Olanusi, who also left the fold, are rare.

Chieftains, including Dr. Bode Olajumoke, party chairman Clement Faboyede, Senator Akinyelure and Senator Nicholas Tofowomo, are not perceived as rallying points for the chapter, althouggh they still command influence in their localities.

There is mututal suspicion and distrust in the Ondo PDP. Some aspirants are elevating personal interests over the collective interest.

    Odd election:

The election in Ondo does not follow the national electoral timetable. Other states in this category are Bayelsa, Kogi and Edo. While Bayelsa and Kogi elections will hold on November 16, those of Edo and Ondo will hold next year.

The Ondo PDP, led by Faboyede, an engineer and former Commissioner in the Mimiko government, cannot afford to take chances. It is generally believed that the party  lost the 2016 governorship poll to the the post-primary crisis that trailed the choice of its candidate.  During the 2019 elections, PDP won two senatorial districts. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  won a seat. The state has nine  House of Representatives seats. PDP won three. APC won four. The social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have one seat each.

    Major aspirants:

No fewer than 16 aspirants have indicated their interests in the ticket. Twelve are from the South Senatorial District, which by the political antecedent of the state, is more favoured to produce the governor. Out of these, only a few seem to be visible judging by their antecedents and activities.

Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), was the immediate past Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mimiko administration. He was also the candidate of the party during the 2016 election and Coordinator of the Atiku 2019 Presidential Campaigns. He is from Akure in the Central Senatorial District. He has commenced consultations  with stakeholders and made a public declaration of his intention.

The lawyer has finally relocated from Yola, Adamawa State capital, where he had practised law for more than three decades. 2016 was his baptism of fire. Although he lost, he has refused to desert the battle.

Jegede, who has the support of Akure, his birthplace and state capital, is flaunting the numerical strength of the city as a vital electoral asset on poll day. His ego will be bruised, if he does not participate in the race. He has been a loyal, dedicated principled chieftain.

Sola Ebiseni, a lawyer, from Ilaje in the South District, is a veteran politician, having served the state in many capacities since 1990. As a youth, he was elected as Chairman of the old Ilaje/Ese Odo Local Government, the oil producing areas of the state. He also served three times as Commissioner in the governments of the late Chief Adebayo Adefarati and Olusegun Mimiko. A delegate at the 2014 National Conference and a prominent member of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, he was also a governorship aspirant during the 2016 election. During the 2019 elections, he was a member of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, the Chief Collation Officer and Agent of the party. He has intensified his consultations and made a public declaration of his interest.

The most experinced aspirant is Ebiseni. He is a grassroots politician who has seen it all. If political seniority and experience are the main factors, he has no rival.

Dr. Eddy Olafeso, a corporate personality and politician, is the National Vice Chairman (Southwest) of the party. He is a former Commissioner for Information in the Agagu administration. His current position as a member of the National Working Committee of the party, is the reason he is being circumspect in throwing his hat in the ring, in contest with those who ordinarily look forward to him for leadership at this critical time. He has thus not made public declaration of his interest. He is Ikale from Okitipupa in the South District.

Olafeso, having placed his hand on the PDP plough, has not looked back. As a national officer of the party, he seems to have connection at the top.

Others whose names are being mentioned, but have not publicly declared their intentions, include Senator Boluwaji Kunlere, lawyer and former Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government in the South District, and John Ola Mafo, also a lawyer, former Commissioner in  the Agagu administration and former Chairman of Ilaje Local Government. He was deputy governorship candidate to Jegede in 2016.

Senator Nicholas Tofowomo, from Ileoluji in the South District, has been mentioned in the social media as an aspirant. But, this has been denied by his handlers. His interest will however, contradict that of Banji  Okunomo, his political godson and Director-General during his campaigns. Okunomo, who is a staff of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), is a former Caretaker Chairman of Ilaje Local Government during the Mimiko administration. He is the Publicity Secretary of the party. He is yet to make a public declaration apparently because of conflict of interest with his principal.

Others from the South are Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, Lagos based businessman, who is believed to have done more intensive legwork than most aspirants, and Prince Godday Erewa, also a businessman based in Sapele, Delta State. He has the financial wherewithal to push his new entrance into politics. The name of Kingsley Kuku, former Special Adviser to President Jonathan, has also been mentioned. He is Arogbo Ijaw in the Ese-Odo Local Government.

    Aspirants from North:

From the North District are Dayo Fadahunsi, a journalist and trade unionist, who was a Special Adviser to Mimiko; Femi Adekambi, a former Commissioner, and Saka Lawal, a former Special Adviser and a contestant during the 2016 exercise.

To analysts, Ondo State politics since 1999 has followed a consistent pattern of rotation among the three districts. It has oscillated from Adebayo Adefarati in the Akoko region of the North District (1999-2003), Dr. Olusegun Agagu from the Ikale region of the South (2003-2009), Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo speaking group of the Central District (2009-2017) and to the North where Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) from the Owo axis now holds sway.

Following these precedents, the preponderance of opinion is that Akeredolu’s successor should emerge from the Southern District. Notwithstanding the aspiration of Tofowomo from Ileoluji, the race in the South is between the Ikale of Okitipupa and Irele Local Governments on one hand and the Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Governments on the other. Analysts seem to favour the oil producing Ilaje and Ese Odo axis, considering the fact that the only gubernatorial opportunity so far to the South had gone to Agagu of Ikale.

Access to funding is another important factor which all aspirants claim to have in sufficient measures. Most of them also claim to have the support of many political gladiators outside the state. However, according to observers, Ondo State has always resisted external influence in its politics. All the governors, since 1999 have emerged without visible external influence.

Party sources said Faboyede is not taking things for granted. His Executive Committee has already constituted a Screening Advisory Committee headed by Dr. Olajumoke, a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and for whose integrity the stakeholders can vouch. The committee is only to advise the party, probably on the parameters for choosing the candidate, which may include zoning, and prevail on some of the aspirants to reduce their growing number.

Ondo State is made up of sub-ethnic Yoruba groups. The Central District is made up of Akure and Ondo sub-zones. The two are different.

The East is made up of Owo and Akoko. The two zones have their cultural differences.

The South is made up of three groups – Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ikale and Ilaje. They are three district groups.

These realities reinforce the agitation for rotation or zoning.

The ruling APC is studying development in the PDP. The choice of a flag bearer will definitely influence the strategy of the APC for the poll. PDP can only pose a formidable challenge to the APC, if the opposition party is united; if it is not torn apart by post-primary crisis.

A party chieftain said a united PDP in Ondo State can also learn from the relative success of the Oyo State chapter. “After putting its house in order, it can also forge an allegiance with other smaller parties during the election,” he said.

Ondo has been fortunate to have good governors. They are Chief Adekunle Ajasin (1979-1983), Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua (1991-1993), Adefarati (1999-2003), Agagu (2003-2008), Mimiko (2008-2016) and Akeredolu, who is seeking a second term. The question is: Can the PDP candidate displace Akeredolu in next year’s poll?

  • Eyitayo Jegede returns to ‘first love’

Sometimes, the road of life offers a U-turn where the journeyman can abort his misadventure and retrace his steps. That exactly is what the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the last gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, has just done.

It will be recalled that the lawyer turned politician won the race against all comers, including billionaire business mogul, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, for the PDP’s flag at the election only to be defeated by the APC candidate. Having been betrayed by some party members who undermined his candidacy by siding with the opposition, Eyitayo has decided that the waters of politics are too murky for him to swim in. The head honcho of Tayo Jegede & Co has therefore gone back to his first lovethe legal profession.

  • Ondo ex-militants cry out over non-payment of allowances

Some ex-militants from Bolowou community in Ese-Edo local government area of Ondo State yesterday raised the alarm over nonpayment of their N65,000 monthly Amnesty stipend.

The Affected ex-militants, numbering 25 said they became worried when they were not paid their last month stipend, whereas other beneficiaries of the scheme in the council received alerts on their bank accounts.

They alleged that they were being victimised due their stands to support the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN during the last year November 26, Governorship election in the state.

Ese-Odo has always been a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but the council was won by APC during the last gubernatorial poll.

The victims are also alleging the former western fringe commander of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Mr. Bibopere Ajube, alias General Shoot at Sight, as the mastermind of the stoppage of their allowances.

A statement jointly signed by two of the ex-militants, Jamin Wariebi and Lubi Timiakirimni  said Ajube was punishing them over their refusal‎ to support the governorship candidate of the PDP, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo state.

They therefore threatened to embark on a peaceful protest on Wednesday this week at Bolowou if their allowances remained unpaid before then.

They alleged that Ajube delisted their names at the Amnesty Office, Abuja after meeting with top officers at the office.

The statement reads ”We are worried and constrained to alert the nation that a former MEND commander, Bibopere Ajube, aka General Shoot at Sight has stopped the payment of our N65,000 monthly stipends with the collaborating of the programme’s ccordinator, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (rtd).

“All other beneficiaries of the programme have been paid last week, but to our surprise, ours was not and we were informed by competent sources at the Amnesty Office that Ajube went to coordinator to delist us from the programme and has already replaced us with persons who were not even captured in the programme.

”From all indications, our ordeal is not unconnected with our refusal to support his preferred governorship candidate in the last election in Ondo state, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN.

“Since the election, Ajube has threatened to deal with all those who worked for the APC candidate and now governor, Rotimi Akeredolu”.

But when contacted, Ajube confirmed the allegation, saying he has given their slots to those who were genuine ex-militants.

He warned them to stop linking their ordeal with the last governorship election state, insisting that they will never benefit from the scheme again because they are not ex-militants.

He noted that the 25 victims lied by claiming that they work for APC during last governorship election because they were loyalists of Chief Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

He said “I have been sincered to my people on this issue of Amnesty and that is why I always directed the Amnesty office to pay directly into the boys’ accounts on like my colleagues, who will ask the office to pay into their accounts and later share the money to their boys.

“We will ensure only those genuine ex-militants will continue to benefit from the scheme and those 25 will never benefit from scheme because they are not ex-militants”.

  • Shocker as Fayose reveals plan to dump PDP

Shocker as Fayose reveals plan to dump PDP

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday hinted that he may quit the crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the 2018 governorship election.

Speaking during a meeting with the state Suppliers’ Association of Nigeria in Ikere-Ekiti, Fayose said  he would stop All Progressives Congress (APC) from taking over the state in 2018.

The governor told his audience he was studying the situation on which party he would move his political family.

Speaking on the defeat his party suffered last Saturday in Ondo State governorship poll, Fayose alleged that the electorate sold their votes.

“The scenario won’t repeat itself in Ekiti,” the governor boasted.

He said the victory of Rotimi Akeredolu did not confer legitimacy on the election or that the people voted rightly.

Fayose dumped the PDP ahead of the 2011 general election when he defected to  Labour Party (LP) to run for Ekiti Central senatorial seat. He was defeated by then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate Babafemi Ojudu.

Fayose returned to PDP in 2012 ahead of the 2014 governorship election in which he defeated Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Ekiti PDP is polarised; the exco loyal to Fayose is led by Gboyega Oguntuase, which belongs to Ahmed Makarfi faction.

The other exco loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu belongs to Ali Modu Sheriff faction.

On his political future, Fayose said: “I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet and at the appropriate time, I will tell you.

“We are still studying the situation. We have to play the game left, right and centre and whoever we are going to use and the platform, you will all be part of the process because politics is about the people.

“You saw how people sold their votes in Ondo State. I am confident that will not happen in Ekiti.  I am close to the people; you are the source of my strength.

“Even if it requires just 48 hours to any election, if I tell you where to go, you will surely follow me there.”

At another meeting with civil servants on Grade Levels 01-06, Fayose boasted that he would defeat the APC again in the 16 local governments, just as it happened on June 21, 2014.

He pledged to give priority to workers’ welfare, carrying them along on receipts from the Federation Account and bridging the communication gap with the workforce.

The governor added: “APC will be fooling itself if it thinks it will conquer Ekiti as it did Ondo. Ekiti is a peculiar place and I am the man on ground here.

“I want to assure my supporters and Nigerians that APC won’t win a local government here in 2018.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko and Eyitayo Jegede might have lost in Ondo State, but that does not mean the people voted rightly.  In 2015, people clamoured for change and what have we got now? Nigerians are becoming poorer than ever.

“Today, I am the lone voice in Southwest. I am now like the nation of Israel surrounded by enemies, but I shall defeat and triumph over them.”

  • Ondo: I’m still studying the election result- Jegede

Ondo: I’m still studying the election result- Jegede

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede has said that he is still studying the outcome of the election.

“It is too early to decide on what to do as a person. My party, the PDP will decide what to do. We are still consulting with those that matter so as to know the next line of action, ” Jegede said on Sunday.

In his reaction to the results of the election that produced Mr Rotimi Akeredolu as the winner, Jegede said “I know we have won the heart of the people and I should thank our people for standing by us and for their show of love and their steadfastness.”

‘We are studying the situation and in the fullness of time you will know what the position of the party is,’ he added.

He stated that “the events that led to the election are known to you and I. We had 48 hours to prepare for the election. I was cleared by the court on Wednesday and had only Thursday to campaign and on Saturday I had to go for election.”

“Our request for postponement of election was denied by INEC for reasons that we are yet to fathom and these are the things in the next few days we will have to review,” Jegede said

The  state Chairman of the PDP, Mr Clement Faboyede while reacting to the results of the election said the party will meet tomorrow with all the stakeholders and our decision will be made public.

“We thank God for the litigation processes and for the way we came out victorious and our heart desire candidate for PDP was cleared to contest the election few days to the election when there was no time for campaign.”

He said: “So far, I have visited close to 50 polling units and my observations are that: INEC personnel arrived at their polling units on time; by 7.12am most of them were already at their polling units.

“I started from somewbere around Fiwasaiye Girls Secondary School and I have gone as far as Owo Road. I noticed that in many places voters were at the polling units beflre the arrival of INEC officials.

“There is a good presence of security men at polling stations; we have an average of 4 to 5 personnel at each polling unit. Happily enough, I have not seen any military presence anywhere.

“I have observed that voting and accreditation started simultaneuosly at 8.00am at most polling units and so far everything is going on smoothly.”

Ondo: Supreme Court okays hearing of Jegede’s appeal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Court of Appeal to continue hearing on the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, challenging the decision of a federal high court to substitute him with the billionaire businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim, as the party candidate for the November 26 governorship election in the state.

A five-man panel led by the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, ordered the court of appeal to continue hearing on the matter.

The court had last week adjourned indefinitely, hearing on the matter, following an application for stay of proceedings filed at the apex court.

Ondo: Court grants Jegede, Makarfi, Obi leave to appeal judgment

…Refuses Sheriff’s, Ibrahim’s request to disband fresh panel

Factional leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Makarfi and Ben Obi and the substituted governorship candidate of party in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede recorded major victory before the Court of Appeal in Abuja Thursday.

The court, in two unanimous rulings by a three-man panel, upheld the applications by Makarfi, Obi (Chairman and Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee) and Jegede for leave to appeal against the June 29, 2016 judgment and October 14, 2016 ruling of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Abang had, in the judgment of June 29, recognised the Ali Modu Sheriff leadership of the PDP as the authentic body to take decisions for the party.

In the October 14 post-judgment ruling, Justice Abang ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept the name of Jimoh Ibrahim (produced by the leadership of the party in Ondo, supported by the Sheriff faction in place of Jegede produced by the Markefi backed faction of the party in Ondo.

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa (who led the panel) said in the lead ruling in the application by Jegede that he has satisfied the court that he was a necessary party to the case even when he was not a party at the trial court.

Justice Saulawa held that under Order 7 Rule 3 of the Court of Appeal Rule an interested party to a judgment, who was not a party at the trial court, is allowed to apply to the appellate court for leave to appeal if such an application had been rejected by the lower court.

He noted that in this case, since the trial court had reject Jegede’s application for leave to appeal, he was right to have file similar application again before the Court of Appeal within the prescribed 15 days.

As against the argument by lawyer to factional Chairman of PDP in Ondo State, Biyi Poroye and other members of his Executive, Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN) that the June 29 judgment was a consent one, the court held otherwise.

The court held that since Jegede was not a party at the trial court, he could not have consented to the judgment. It noted that by the record of the court, INEC that was a party at the trial court, did not consent to the judgment.

“I am satisfied that there are reasonable grounds duly established by the applicant (Jegede) that he be given the opportunity to appeal the judgment.

“The applicant has duly established that he is the person aggrieved by the decision of the court below, having won the primary of the party,” Justice Saulawa said.

He granted that application, deemed the notice of appeal and record of proceedings already compiled by the Jegede as properly filed and compiled.

The courts granted an order departing from its court’s rule and abridge the time within which parties could file their processes.

It granted the appellant (Jegede) 24 hours within which to file his brief or argument and three days to the respondents to file respondent’s brief.

The ruling delivered in the application by Jegede, was adopted in the similar applications by Makarfi and Obi.

In an earlier ruling, the court refused an application by Poroye and others for the disbandment of the fresh panel set up to hear all the appeals on the dispute over the governorship candidate of PDP in Ondo.

The court held that the decision to set up a special panel to promptly determine the appeals was within the administrative powers of the Court of Appeal President, which cannot be challenged by anyone in court.

Other members of the panel: Justice Ignatius Igwe Agube and Ita Godwin Mbaba agreed with the lead decisions by Justice Saulawa.

  • Ondo poll: I will defeat Ibrahim, Jegede – Akeredolu

Ondo poll: I will defeat Ibrahim, Jegede – Akeredolu

    …Says no rift with Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the forthcoming Ondo State governorship election, Rotimi Akeredolu was on Monday confident that he can win the two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants, Jimoh Ibrahim and Eyitayo Jegede, put together.

He spoke with State House correspondents after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari along with Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Akeredolu said: “l can always tell you, people who know me, they know that I talk most times with some confidence, let me assure you here that by the grace of God, we will win the election in Ondo state.

“I can assure you I would have been happier facing both of them together, if Eyitayo Jegede was chosen as candidate and Ibrahim as his deputy, I will still win.

“Infact Jegede happens to be a friend, Ibrahim too. Jimoh Ibrahim went to Ife, so we have known ourselves for long. I have no fear about both of them. We know that we are going to win this election and I have no doubt,” he added

When asked to speak on efforts to settle the rift between him and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, he denied any rift with Tinubu.

He said: “I don’t have any rift with him, since the primaries you would see that as leader of the party, he has not said anything about it. He has accepted the primaries and we are moving on. So, I don’t have any rift with him at all and we are moving on.”

He said that his party in the state has already called on the security agencies in Ondo to be up and doing in order not to allow miscreants take over the state in the name of protests.

He said: “Because for instance as a governor you encourage lawlessness or people in the guise of protest because what the PDP has is a problem within the party, that should not lead to demonstration outside and you know that people are not demonstrating for any reason but because they have been more or less paid to come and do it.

“What we said is don’t allow miscreants to be out. Nobody can control the end of such demonstration. So it’s not that we are afraid, but we fear for the life and property of the people of Ondo state.” He stated

Speaking on the visit to the President, Lalong said: “A few weeks ago I was given the responsibility of leading the campaign on behalf of the National Executive for the Ondo election. And the candidate since election at the primaries have not come to be presented to the leader of our party, that is Mr President.

“So today we came in with the candidate and to confirm to the President that APC has only one candidate unlike other parties that are fighting about who is their candidate.

“We have only one candidate and that candidate is Chief Akeredolu Rotimi (SAN).” He said
He was optimistic that the APC will win the election.

He said: “Well that is not a problem to APC, since inception you knew what happened in Kogi, you knew what happened in Edo, we won the elections. It was as if it was going to be very difficult for us but we won the elections.

“Today again we are going into Ondo, all the mistake we made in other states we have corrected them, we are seeing a very smooth election, not only a smooth election but the credibility of the candidate itself is something worth selling,” he said.

The governor also faulted the visit of the out-going Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to President Buhari last Friday.

According to him, Mimiko should have concentrated on resolving the crisis that erupted in his state.

He said: “Let me say it was even wrong for them to start running to Mr. President to help them solve the problem of PDP in their party. Mr. President is the President of Nigeria and he is not a member of PDP. Even when we have problems in APC, we don’t run to Mr. President.

“If he has a problem in his state, he is the governor, let him stay there and resolve the matter. Its a matter between PDP and PDP and those matters are in court. So why should you run to the President. Is the President the chief judge of Nigeria?” He queried

He went on: “He is not the INEC chairman either. Well Mr. President is a loyal party man. So he is answerable to the party although the president of Nigeria.”

On the response of President Buhari to the visit, Lalong said: “He has also confirmed that he has seen the candidate and is also praying for a successful election in Ondo state.”
