Ezeife: Ohanaeze mourns, describes ex-governor as purveyor of morals, justice

Apex Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has described the former governor of Anambra state, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife as a consistent purveyor of morals, justice and equity.

Ohanaeze, which said it received with deep shock the death of yet another Igbo Titan, further described Ezeife as “a one man riot squad, an erudite scholar and astute bureaucrat, brave and thoughtful dogged fighter and an accomplished politician.”

Ohanaeze’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by its national publicity secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, in Enugu on Friday, December 15.

The statement read: “Okwadike was a consistent purveyor of morals, justice and equity. He was a remarkable advocate of progressivism in its purest tradition. When the Moshood Abiola Mandate was truncated, Ezeife risked the military dungeon in the pursuit of justice. A detribalized patriot who warned that unless there is a re-federalisation of Nigeria and fundamental restructuring of the polity, Nigeria will continue to grope in the dark.

“The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, MFR; OFR; CFR; FNICE; FNSE; KSC (Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo) could not withhold his emotions on hearing the passing on of Okwadike. He lamented that the Igbo have been afflicted with a chain of catastrophe within a very short space of time; Prof. George Obiozor, Prof. Joe Irukwu, Prof . Ben Nwabueze, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, Dr. Sylvanus Olisanye Ebigwei and now Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, amongst others. He qualified Ezeife as a quintessential Igbo in all ramifications. He added that Nigeria has lost a rare gem.

“On behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and indeed all the sons and daughters of Igbo land, we send our condolences to the immediate family of Okwadike, the Igbo Ukwu community and the good people of Anambra State.

  • 2019: Ezeife, Obi, Nwosu, others endorse Atiku

The Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket received a boost at the weekend when a frontline Igbo political organisation, Igbo Political Stakeholders Assembly,  threw its weight behind it.

The alliance comprises  former governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Senator Ben Obi, Dr ABC Nwosu, S.N Okeke,   wife of the PDP presidential candidate, Mrs Jennifer Douglas Abubakar  and Mrs Margaret Obi,  wife of PDP Vice Presidential candidate.

In a statement by the group’s Chairman, Chief S N Okeke, a one-time chairman of the Police Service Commission under the Obasanjo Presidency, the group expressed confidence in the capacity of Atiku/Obi ticket to end mass poverty, grow well paying jobs, diversify the  economy and, most importantly, restructure the nation.

“We find the Atiku policy document progressive in conception, compelling in vision and actionable given its specific details, timelines and implementation schedule”, the group further averred that “apart from the well articulated policy document that has the capacity to radically transform the nation’s economic and social landscape for the better”, the group is “impressed by the track records of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi as ‘broad-minded’ Nigerian patriots who will be fair and just to all irrespective of ethnic, regional, gender or class orientation,” it stated.

Urging the PDP Presidential ticket to regard its policy and programme on restructuring not as a mere campaign mantra but an article of faith and binding social contract with the Nigerian people which should be delivered in a timely, well structured and consensual fashion,  the group declared that “it will deploy its considerable human and material resources, leverage on its extensive network of support across Igboland and the whole nation, and partner with like-minded patriotic women and community based organizations to ensure the victory of the Atiku-Obi ticket in the 2019 Presidential election”.

Other leading members of the group are AVM C E Umenwaliri, Chief Sam Nkire, Chief Rex Onyeabor, General C R U Ihekire, Chief Coleman Uba,  Prof Uka Ezenwe and many other prominent figures.

  • Akinrinade, Ezeife, others: it’s time to restructure

Akinrinade, Ezeife, others: it’s time to restructure

Former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Alani Akinrinade and other prominent stakeholders yesterday told President Muhammadu Buhari to brace for restructuring, insisting that it was time to unbundle the centre.

Akinrinade, who delivered a lecture in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to mark the sixth anniversary of Governor Seriake Dickson’s administration, specifically urged Buhari to initiate a bill in the National Assembly for power devolution.

“President Buhari should go immediately for the clusters of consensus and low hanging fruits by initiating a bill for the structural unbundling of an overburdened centre through the removal of several agreed items from the Exclusive List and their devolution to the constituting states in a way and manner that does not enfeeble or endanger the manifest destiny of the nation,” he said.

The retired general, who went down memory lane on the historical origin of restructuring, said the survival of the country depended on it.

Traditional rulers, former governors, political appointees and lawmakers were at the lecture entitled: “Restructuring: the way forward for Nigeria”.

Former Anambra State Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife, President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) Shettima Yerima; Afenifere Spokesman Yinka Odumakin and founding President, Nigeria Oral Literature Association Prof. Godini Darah were panelists for the lecture.

Akinrinade, whose lecture was punctuated intermittently by applauses, maintained that restructuring was inevitable and unavoidable for Nigeria.

Listing the expectations of a restructured country, he said: “I hope to live to see the day in a properly federalised and restructured Nigeria, the return of the groundnut and cotton pyramids to Kano wrapped with colourful hides and skin, huge cocoa plantations to the West, the palm oil and kernel industry to the East and the appearance of yam skyscrapers in Makurdi, Gboko and Jalingo

“Governor Seriake Dickson sir, I hope in my lifetime that you or one of your successors will transform from an administrator to a true governor that will not need to look elsewhere to adequately protect and safeguard his people and their properties.

“That will be free to plan and execute without hindrance the utilisation of her natural resources, including oil and gas to the benefit of Bayesians first, and observing and enforcing best practices for environmental protection…”

But the lecturer cautioned that “restructuring does not lead to an automatic El Dorado, adding: “It is not a panacea for good governance but a strategic ancillary.”

Dickson reaffirmed his position that restructuring held the key to preserving the unity, stability and economic prosperity of the country.

The governor said those championing the restructuring crusade were the true patriots of an egalitarian, just and fair Nigeria.

He called on all well-meaning Nigerians to support the restructuring movement towards actualising the Nigerian project.

He said: “Those in support of restructuring and constitutional amendment to address the imbalances in our nation are indeed believers of the Nigerian project and not the other way round.”

The panelists emphasised the need for more interactions among Nigerians, particularly the northern people to assuage the fears and misconceptions surrounding the issue of restructuring.

  • Ezeife, Soludo lead Obiano’s re-election bid in old Aguata

    •Ekwueme, Uba brothers absent

Former governor of old Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife and former Central Bank of, Nigeria Governor (CBN), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, are leading the charge for the re-election bid of Governor Willie Obiano in the Old Aguata Union (OAU) in Anambra State.

But the major absentees during the meeting were other prominent sons from the zone like former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Senator Andy Uba, Senator Ugochukwu Uba and the godfather of Anambra politics, Chief Chris Uba.

The Old Aguata Union comprised three local government areas of Orumba North, Orumba South and Aguata with 45 communities out of the 177 in the state.

The meeting which was held at the weekend at triple tree hotels at Amaokpala in Orumba North was chaired by Ezeife, which also had in attendance two former Deputy Governors in the state, Dr. Okey Udeh and Chief Emeka Sibeudu.

According to the speakers led by Ezeife and Soludo, the aim of such gathering was to tell the people, it would be better to give support to Obiano to complete his four year tenure, than the south senational zone waiting for more eight years again.

They declared that the zone was tired of being deputy, adding that they would support Obiano for power to shift to south in 2022, which according to them was the surest way of getting it.

Soludo said those saying if elected, they would only serve for four years were either “naïve or fraudulent” adding that nobody voluntarily leaves power, noting that anybody who was desperate for power would always find it difficult to relinquish.

“So, the surest way of getting power in the south is through Obiano, therefore, we should support him to win the election, we want Governorship and not deputy and we are going to start door to door campaign politics on this project, “Soludo said.

For Ezeife, “the only way to achieve peace in Anambra state is through rotation of the office of the Governor to each of the three senational zones, and our rotation has to be rigid, eight years to each zone starting with Obiano”

Former deputy to Mr. Peter Obi, Emeka Sibeudu, said there was nothing on the position of Deputy Governor, adding that deputies were always suppressed by the governors.

Also, one time deputy to Dr. Chris Ngige, Dr Okey Udeh, said the surest way of achieving the aim of old Aguata was to make sure that Obiano wins, nothing that if APGA loses the election, the party was dead in the state.

But the member representing Orumba North and South at the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Nwankwo, a member of the people’s Democratic Party (PDP), told them that such arrangement would succeed, if everybody was called together at Ezeife’s house and not in a hostel.

He said he would not oppose every decision taken by the OAU, adding that it would be good to hold such a meeting at Ezeife’s house.

  • Oshiomhole, Ezeife, Sagay disagree on restructuring

Oshiomhole, Ezeife, Sagay disagree on restructuring

Former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay; and a former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, yesterday disagreed on whether restructuring will lead to the development of Nigeria.

They spoke in Benin City at the 20th Professor Wole Soyinka Annual Lecture Series organized by the National Association of Seadogs.

Former Governor Oshiomhole, who delivered the keynote address, said those canvassing for restructuring were diverting Nigerians’ attention from the real issues of governance and leadership.

Oshiomhole, who noted that it was not the right time to discuss on whether Nigeria should remain as one, said what was viable was to do things differently as a nation to make the country great and Nigerians benefit from its huge resources.

He stated that many of the nation’s leaders, advocating restructuring, were the same persons that pushed for the creation of states since the days of the military.

He said those pushing for the implementation of the National Confab report were doing so because part of its recommendations was that 18 additional states should be created.

Oshiomhole, who insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari is fighting corruption the right way, said what should engage the attention of Nigerians should be how to make the Nigeria project a reality.

His words: “There is no one part that is doing the rest of the country a favour more than the other parts.

“These same people were there at the beginning. Some of the people talking now were those that said the regions were not balanced and states should be created to bring government closer to the people.

“They said the centre was too weak. Today, they turn around to say the states are not viable and the centre is too powerful. We should be talking about how to apply our natural wealth to benefit Nigerians.

“What we need to restructure are our values, the attitude to governance and the issue of corruption. There are structural problems because there are two main tribes in Nigeria, the tribe of the very rich and the tribe of the very poor.

“We should be talking about how to apply our national wealth in a way it will bring about equality in wealth distribution. We need to restructure our attitude, character and value system in a way it gives opportunity to all Nigerians.”

On his part, Sagay called for the scrapping of the federation account to make states viable.

He stated that restructuring the country “means the return to true federalism and autonomy of the federating units”.

Sagay said it was an insult to federalism for states to be paid allocations as currently being experienced in Nigeria.

Sagay insisted that Nigeria would never develop, if it remained as a civil servant waiting for monthly salaries.

He stated the only way out was to have a national conference on ways to have devolution of power.

Sagay lambasted the organized labour, federal lawmakers and the northern elites for opposing true federalism and autonomy of the federating units.

He said the organized labour “wants wages to be determined by the federal government instead of states.

“The northern elites are so used to proceeds of oil that they abandoned the thugs that make them Great as a region. It it better for them to accept federalism and autonomy because it will be better for them.

“The North will be the greatest beneficiary of autonomy. They have a great means of revenue which they are ignoring. They should convince cattle rearers to build ranches instead of whipping cattle to the south.

“Federal legislators’ reasons are selfish. If you have true federalism, that free allowances will not be available for them.

“Any act of misgovernance in Abuja reverberates across the country. The current unitary system is suffocating and states are struggling to grow. They are dependent on the federal government feeding bottle. It is imperative we return to the 1963 constitution to suit our present challenges, if we are to coexist in a crisis-free Nigeria.”

Ezeife said Nigeria faced extinction, if there was no restructuring.

Ezeife noted that only restructuring would free Nigeria from the plot by the British government to keep the country underdeveloped.

He urged Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to before 2018 convoke a conference that would discuss the country.

“Every honest Nigerian knows we are at the brink of extinction. Nigeria will cease to exist, if we do not restructure. It is a joke for people to think we should not restructure.

“Northerners will lose most from the disintegration of Nigeria. We need to go back to the agreed Nigeria. Make the six zones federating units. Allow states in the zones to develop their own constitutions.

“Osinbanjo should make sure the issue of restructuring is complete by the middle of 2018. Make sure the zones control their security.”

  • Why FG should concede SGF slot to  South East—Ezeife, Iwuanyanwu, others

Why FG should concede SGF slot to  South East—Ezeife, Iwuanyanwu, others

The South East is unrelenting in its quest for the Office of Secretary to the Federal Government, following the suspension of the incumbent, David Babachir Lawal.

There are speculations that Lawal may not return and that the presidency is already searching for a replacement.

Political leaders from the South East have launched a campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari to give the position to the zone, citing the need to reverse the view that the administration is marginalizing the zone.

Frontline Igbo leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, believes the South East has got nothing tangible so far from the Buhari government and that it would expect that if there is such a vacancy, the Federal Government  will reserve  it for  the region.

”If you look at the whole thing that they are doing, it appears as if people don’t exist in the South East,” he told The Nation.

“We have people who are qualified to hold this position in the APC. They should look at our people in the APC and appoint one of them.”

A former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, is also of the view that the position should naturally be conceded to the South East.

His words: “Nigeria has six principal protocol offices.  The North West has the President; the South West has the Vice-President; the Senate President is from the North Central; so are other zones except the South East.

“Our constitution prescribes federal character, but the South East zone is conspicuously absent, blatantly removed from these positions. The position should automatically come to the South East.”  He added: “Usually, anyone who should be the SGF is effectively someone who knows where the switches in government are, so that if anybody switches on, he switches off.

“That was why, in the past, it was only retired permanent secretaries that qualified to be made SGF. Somebody who has worked as a governor is also qualified because he has worked with so many permanent secretaries.”

While supporting the call that the SGF position to go to the South East, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group,Nnia Nwodo, said:  ”I think we should go beyond the stage of determining who should occupy an office on the basis of  zone to competence. The entire federal appointments have violated the federal character and shortchanged the South East and shortchanged the policy of the APC to zone the SGF position to the South East.

“They ate their own words. We are going to court to challenge the president for non-compliance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“A lot more has been done in denying the South East their due at the centre. I hope the president will use this opportunity to correct a lot of things. But far more important is that he should look for somebody competent from the South East. We want quality people to man important positions.”

But he said Ohanaeze will not lobby the presidency for the position to come to the zone, saying: “I am not interested in lobbying anybody to recognize the zone. The president is supposed to be the father of the whole country. He has sworn to the constitution and I expect him to respect his oath of office.”

The call also got the support of First Republic Minister and nationalist, Mbazulike Amaechi, who ,in a telephone interview , said: “If the president now believes that there should be fairness and equity and justice and that Nigeria should be a true federation, he should give the post of the SGF to the South East.

“You put somebody in Foreign Affairs and another in Science and Technology. To me, those are insignificant positions.

“It shows that he doesn’t want the Igbo. If he changes his mind now, it will douse tension in the country. He will regain the confidence of the Igbo people if he does this.

“Ogbonaya Onu had been a chairman of a political party that sponsored President Buhari twice. He has been so faithful a man. He is a quiet and principled Igbo man. He is not like these other ones that jump from one party to the other. If he (Buhari) actually wants somebody who will be loyal to him, he has him (Onu) there in Abuja.”

On his part, the national chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, said the call for the replacement of the suspended SGF is misplaced and premature because he has not been indicted.

Even if the seat becomes vacant, Okorie said, whoever occupies the position lies within the purview of the president.

He said: ”He knows who he wants. Even though it is provided for in the law of the land, it is not one of those offices that is subjected to federal character.  It is the president’s prerogative as far as I know.

“ If the president gives it to the South East, I will definitely be happy.

“I am not keen on what position my people occupy, but what the government does for my people.  Our people occupied positions in the past and there was nothing to show for it.”
