Ezeji talks of Cup magic moments

Victor Ezeji, a three time winner of the FA Cup in Nigeria, now known as the Federation Cup, has told supersport.com about his most memorable final matches in the nation’s oldest football competition.

Ezeji, now with Enyimba, won the Federation Cup in 2004, 2006 and 2007 with Dolphins. The celebrated striker played in four Cup finals in the space of six years.

2004 Final: Dolphins v Enugu Rangers

This was the first of the four Cup finals in which Ezeji has appeared in. He described it as “a cracker of a game.”

It was Bola Bello’s first half goal that sealed Cup triumph for the Pride of Rivers against Rangers, and Ezeji singled out late goalkeeper, Sam Okoye, as the man that stood out in defence for Rangers in that game in October 2004.

Ezeji believes Rangers did well to shut him out from scoring and he could only provide the assist for Bello’s winning goal. And that fetched him the most valuable player in that edition.

“I think it was the assist that gave me the MVP in that edition. Our goal was scored by Bola Bello. It was a cracker of a game. Though I had one very clear chance that I blew away. I think the outstanding defender was their keeper, late Sam Okoye,” said Ezeji to supersport.com.

    • Says he has netted in every league season

Enyimba’s Victor Ezeji has expressed his delight at scoring the goal that ensured he has scored at every league season in the Glo Premier League.

Ezeji came on in the 81st minute and barely five minutes later he was on the scoresheet as he increased Enyimba’s lead against stubborn Lobi Stars.

Speaking with SportingLife after the match, Ezeji said he has now scored for all the premier league clubs he has played for.

He also stated that he has scored in all the league seasons he featured.

“I am happy to have scored today(yesterday). It was a tough match under a very difficult atmosphere. I have scored for all the clubs I have played for and I have also scored in every league season I participated. I am glad this has come eventually,” Ezeji told SportingLife.

Enyimba eventually beat Lobi 3-0 to jump to second on the log with 49 points from 30 games.

Ezeji: Only God knows when I’ll retire

Victor Ezeji made his long expected debut for Enyimba on Sunday in the People’s Elephant’s 2-0 home win over Nembe City and he told SportingLife he had not made any retirement plan.

Ezeji, who is making a second coming to the Aba Millionaires, replaced Daniel Etor in the 76th minute with Enyimba already two goals up courtesy of Bishop Onyeudo’s double in the 18th and 40th minutes of the first half.

The former Sharks and Dolphins of Port Harcourt striker made his impact felt immediately when, with his first touch of the ball, he sent a well tailored pass into the vital area of Nembe City which, however, eluded Onyeudo.

After the match, he told SportingLife of his happiness to make a winning debut for Enyimba and that with his experience, he hopes to lead the former African Champions to the summit of the league this season.

Ezeji then said he had not thought of retirement and would do so immediately he gets a revelation from God.

His said: “It was a great game considering the fact that we won 2-0.

“The most important thing is for us to get the three points and thereafter know where we are heading.

“We thank God we got the three points at the end of the day.

“Well that is what football is all about. At times you just come in and make an immediate impact but sometimes it doesn’t go like that, but I thank God we won eventually.

“It is only God that can decide when I will retire. It is not by my power at all.”
