No fewer than Seventeen Nigeria Professional Football League sides will be in action Saturday and Sunday, as they attempt to survive the challenges posed by less fancied sides for advance to the round of 16 of this year’s FA cup.

Last season finalist Niger Tornadoes will be praying against any obstacles as they dream to replicate the achievement of last season by cruising all the way to the final.

The Minna side will take on Kogi United in Makurdi, just as last year champions Akwa United who few days ago got N70million naira largesse for winning last year’s edition will take on Aklosendi FC in Enugu. In Gombe, two premier league sides Yobe Desert Stars and Plateau United will slug it out.

The likes of Heartland and Shooting stars know for doing exploits in the federation cup unfortunately hit the exit door in the round of 64

Nationwide League one side, Cofine FC created an upset of the round of 64 edging out Premier league returnees Heartland 4-2 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 at regulation time. The FA cup which has run for decades has continued to maintain the surprises that make it thick with amateur clubs pulling the rugs out of the feet of top teams.

  • FA cup: Gov Udom doles out N70m to Akwa Utd

These are happy times for premier league side Akwa United as the state governor has made good his promise of naira rain on the team for winning last year FA cup.

Governor Udom Emmanuel Wednesday put smiles on the faces of team with a Cheque of N70million.

The club apparently impressed by the feat at a time when some clubs are singing lamentation songs over unpaid wages and fees took to their twitter handle @AkwaUnited_fc to announce the windfall while thanking the Governor for keeping to his promise.

His Excellency @MrUdomEmmanuel has reward us @Akwaunitedfc for winning the 2017 Aiteo Cup competition with a cash sum of 70Million Naira.  Thank you Governor Udom Emmanuel

Recall that Akwa united claimed the title decided at the Agege Township Stadium otherwise called the temple after defeating equally hard fighting and ambitious Niger Tornadoes 3-2 on penalty.

Last year’s victory marked the second time the Uyo based side will be clinching the title after winning it in 2015 after a 2-1 defeat of Lobi stars.  The Agege Stadium encounter which drew creme dela creme to the temple ended goalless at regulation time and headed straight into penalty.

The team had earlier pocketed N25 million for their effort while runners up Tornadoes got N10million.

Akwa United it will equally be recalled put up spirited effort in the Confederation Cup but failed to go beyond the group stage.

  • Victor Moses lifts FA Cup with Chelsea at Wembley

Super Eagles’ star, Victor Moses was in action for Chelsea on Saturday as they defeated Manchester united to win the FA Cup for the eight time.

Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty proved the difference at the Wembley stadium.

United improved in the second period and probably deserved an leveler. However, Thibaut   Courtois made some important saves to deny United  with Paul Pogba missing an absolute sitter

Player rating for match shows that Moses who was in action for 90 minutes was a class of second best of players in the game that left  Jose Mourinho side defeated.

Moses who was sent out in the last FA Cup final against Arsenal last year was today marked 6 in the same class with Fabrigas, Kante, Alonso, Hasard and Giroud in the players rating for the match.

    PLAYER RATINGS

    Chelsea: Courtois (8), Azpilicueta (6), Cahill (8), Rudiger (7), Moses (6), Fabregas (6), Kante (8), Bakayoko (6), Alonso (6), Hazard (8), Giroud (6).

    Subs: Morata (5), Willian (5).

Man of the match: Eden Hazard

Meanwhile Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as said Chelsea did not deserve to win.

His words, “I congratulate them because they won but I don’t think they deserved to win.

“I congratulated them. I am Manchester United manager and I have to be respectful, not just because they are my previous club but because they are the opponents today but I think we deserved to win.

“I am quite curious to know what you say or what people write because if my team plays like Chelsea did I can imagine what people would say. I am quite curious.

“It was a bit hard for us to play without Lukaku against a team that defends with nine players. You need that presence. Every defeat hurts but I go home with the feeling we gave everything. No regrets.

“Chelsea are not stupid. They know our team without Lukaku or Fellaini does not have a presence so putting eight or nine players in front of the box they knew they would be dominant in that direct football. We tried everything by other ways but they had a huge block of compacted players.

“The image of the game is that David de Gea did not touch the ball. He touched the ball to grab it in the net.”

  • Soccer Fans to pay N73, 000 for FA cup final

Soccer fans, who will storm the Wembley stadium on May 19 for the FA cup final between Manchester United and Chelsea, will have to part with N73, 000, N58, 000 and N23, 000 respectively.

The FA approved £145 for grade A tickets, £115 for category B tickets respectively. The cheapest ticket however remains at £45 (about N23, 000).

The FA has faced criticism from supporters groups for price increases which saw an additional £30.

Nigeria’s Victor Moses who was impressive in the Chelsea’s semi final tie against Southampton with the Blues running away with a 2-0 victory to hit the final, will be hoping to replicate the performance when they face Manchester United in next month’s final. Should the former Wigan Athletic ace and his teammates win the title at the expense of Manchester United, he would have joined compatriot and Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel in clinching the FA cup with the Blues.

The 2016–17 premier league winner has continued to enjoy impressive run at the Stamford Bridge and is one of the super Eagles player being tipped to lift Nigeria in Russia where they have been pitched against Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the Group Stage. Eagles captain John Obi mikel who currently plies his trade with Chinese Super League side Tiajin Teda, won three FA  cups with Chelsea 2006–07, 2008–09, 2011–12

  • FA Cup final: Michael Oliver to take charge

Referee Michael Oliver will be at the centre when Manchester United face Chelsea in the FA cup final at Wembley, May 19.

It will be Oliver’s first cup match after his controversial handling of the Champions league quarter-final second leg tie between Real Madrid adn Juventus which saw Cristiano Ronaldo converting a penalty adjudged to have been wrongly awarded.

The Wembley final will see Oliver officiate his first cup match since the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Real Madrid and Juventus, which ended in controversy.

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon, who was sent off by Oliver for his protests after the awarding of the penalty, claimed the English official has as “bag of rubbish for a heart” in his furious post-match comments.

UEFA gave their backing to Oliver, who returned to domestic action earlier this month – refereeing Huddersfield’s 1-0 win over Watford as well as West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Stoke.

The FA confirmed on Tuesday that Oliver has been appointed as referee next month’s final, and that he will be assisted by linesmen Lee Betts and Ian Hussin and fourth official Lee Mason.

“I was very proud and humbled to receive the phone call. When you start out, taking charge of the (FA) Cup final is not something you even think about,” Oliver said on the FA’s website.

“As your career progresses it becomes a realistic target, but it’s not a call you ever expect to take, but it is a great one. This opportunity only comes around once in a referee’s career.”

Chelsea will be housed in the England dressing room for the final, while Manchester United will be in the traditional away dressing room.

Meanwhile, both clubs will have over 28,500 tickets for the final, with the FA insisting 80 per cent of the seats at Wembley will go to supporters of the two competing sides.

The remaining 20 per cent of tickets will go to members of the ‘FA family’, which includes volunteers from County FAs and other members of football’s grassroots.

  • Jose to Spurs: Wembley sojourn won’t save you

Despite having Wembley almost as a home ground, Jose Mourinho has told Spurs that they will have no advantage over Manchester United ahead of the FA Cup semi-final clash on Saturday

Mauricio Pochettino’s side  have played all their home matches at England’s national stadium this season, while work on the new White Hart Lane is completed.

Mourinho, though does not think Spurs will have any kind of edge this weekend and says he is not preparing for the match any differently than he did in the early rounds.

He told a news conference: “I played one cup final in Roma’s stadium against Roma [as Inter coach in 2010] and I won, and I played a cup final in my stadium [at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013, as Real Madrid coach] and I lost, so I think, when you go to these big moments with big decisions, semi-finals, finals, I don’t think it’s an advantage at all.

“In some countries, even the cup semi-final is played with a draw and you play home or away, not at a neutral ground, and that’s just football.

“I look at Tottenham-Manchester United the same way I looked at Huddersfield, or Brighton. This time it’s away but I don’t see any advantage. It’s the same as playing at Old Trafford.”

Mourinho, who denied the suggestion his season will be a failure if United do not win the FA Cup, has had his team training in London since the 2-0 Premier League win at Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The Portuguese has thanked Fulham and head coach Slavisa Jokanovic for allowing United to use their facilities as they prepare for Saturday’s showdown.

“Yesterday [Thursday] they let us use Craven Cottage and today [Friday] I asked for a pitch on the training ground [Motspur Park] and Jokanovic, the manager, gave me their best pitch so I have to thank Fulham and Joka for that,” he told MUTV.

“I think it’s just good for us after the Bournemouth game, instead of travelling back to Manchester, getting the plane, then go back home, come back the next day, train to London again. But we just came here [to London], we’re here together, training quietly, preparing for the game the best we can.”

Despite jose’s down playing  the possibility of branding the season being branded a failure should Man U fail to win the FA cup, some supporters of the side insist that the only way they can be happy for the season is to clinch the trophy after losing the premier league title to rival neighbours Manchester city.

  • Mourinho forecasts ‘amazing’ period for Man Utd

Mourinho forecasts ‘amazing’ period for Man Utd

Jose Mourinho has predicted an “amazing” period for Manchester United as he prepares to host a series of significant fixtures at Old Trafford across three different competitions.

United host Chelsea in the English Premier League on Sunday to kick off a run of four home games in their next five matches.

Mourinho’s side start next month with a league trip to Crystal Palace before welcoming top-four rivals Liverpool.

A Champions League last-16, second-leg fixture against Sevilla and a home FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton & Hove Albion wrap up the busy period, and Mourinho remains confident ahead of United’s decisive spell in the campaign.

“I think the next few weeks at Old Trafford will be amazing,” he told MUTV.

”Two big matches against two direct rivals in the EPL, two knockout matches that, if things go well, can leave us in the quarter-final of the Champions League and the semi-final of the FA Cup.

“Sometimes we have periods with three, four consecutive away matches but this time we have four matches at home, with Crystal Palace away in between, but four big matches at Old Trafford.”

United’s schedule contains 13 fixtures, including 11 league matches, but that total could potentially rise to 20 depending on their progress in the cup competitions.

“March, April and May can be really busy and going far in the FA Cup creates you problems.

“We now play Brighton when we were supposed to play West Ham and we don’t know when we’ll play West Ham,” Mourinho added.

United, currently second in the league, have an opportunity to open up a six-point advantage over fourth-placed Chelsea with a win at the weekend.

  • English players are masters of diving, Wenger says

English players are masters of diving, Wenger says

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger weighed into the debate about simulation in the English Premier League on Thursday by suggesting that English players may have become “the masters of diving”.

Wenger made the statement ahead of the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, and was speaking as the fallout continued from last weekend’s 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Spurs.

During the match, Tottenham’s Dele Alli was booked for diving and Harry Kane was accused of falling too easily to win a penalty kick under a challenge from goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had defended his players by saying part of football is about “tricking the opponent’’.

However, Wenger believes those comments have been blown out of proportion, saying simulation was an increasing problem.

“We have to get the diving out of the game,” the Frenchman told a news conference on Thursday.

“I remember there were tremendous cases here when foreign players did it, but I must say the English players have learned very quickly and they might even be the masters now.”

Alli has been particularly criticised after receiving his third caution for simulation.

Wenger did not name the England midfielder but said there is a fine line between what is legal and what is not.

“I don’t encourage my players to dive. But sometimes you want your players to be intelligent. They have played a little bit with the rules, they make more of it on the penalty kick case,” he said.

“Every striker will do that. They extend a little bit of the rules. How far can you go? That is down to the referees and I think that sometimes, at normal speed, it is very difficult to determine.”

Wenger will decide on Friday whether to play Petr Cech or David Ospina in goal as the Czech continues to recover from a calf injury.

The injury led to his substitution in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Everton.

“Cech or Ospina, I will make that decision tomorrow,” said Wenger. “Petr Cech has not practiced, but I will not take any risk if he is not 100 per cent fit.”

The Frenchman also hopes to have Nacho Monreal and Danny Welbeck available for the game.

It is the first time Wenger has taken Arsenal to play Spurs at Wembley, a ground where the Gunners traditionally thrive, winning the FA Cup final in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

“We feel we have a good level of performance at Wembley. It gives you a good pitch to allow you to play the way you want to,” said Wenger.

The Arsenal manager will face Spurs for the 52nd time in his 22 years as Arsenal manager.

Tornadoes supporters mobilise for new season

If there is one thing Niger Tornadoes Football Club Supporters Club has resolved to do, it is to increase the tempo of support for the Minna based side.

The supporters apparently not the mood to talk too much but walk the talk, paid a solidarity visit to the newly appointed Chairman of Tornadoes Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha Gawu at the club’s Conference Hall in Minna on Monday. Recall that the state government recently dissolved the former club and reconstituted new one headed by Alhaji Gawu with mandate to ensure that the club gets all the needed support to post impressive outing in the new season which begins January 14.

The new chairman had earlier inspected the Bako Kontagora stadium with some officials of the League management board ahead of the new season.

Tornadoes prior to this time have been playing their home matches at the Conference Stadium in Lokoja the Kogi state capital while the Bako Kontagora stadium was undergoing renovation.  There are however strong indications that the Minna landlords will return to base in the new season.

Tornadoes begin the new campaign against kwara United at the Ilorin Township Stadium on January `14.

Niger Tornadoes, finished 11th on the log last season, with 54 points in 38 matches. After missing an opportunity to emerge FA Cup champions by whiskers last season losing narrowly to Akwa United, are hoping to   re-double effort with a view to surpassing achievements made last season.
