Como to donate Italian Cup tie proceeds to flood victims,  says Fabregas

Como will donate all proceeds from  tomorrow’s Coppa Italia match versus Sassuolo to support the local community after the city suffered flood damage following torrential rain in Northern Italy overnight, manager Cesc Fabregas said.

The centre of Como was badly hit after Lake Como flooded following intense rainfall, with water flowing through the city’s streets, partially submerging cars and causing damage to homes and businesses.

“The club will donate all the proceeds from the Italian Cup match against Sassuolo … to support the local community during this difficult time,” Fabregas said in an Instagram post referring to the second-round tie between the two Serie A teams.

“My thoughts are with everyone in Como today. Seeing our beautiful lake flood and the damage it has brought is heart-breaking,” he added.

“Como is more than just a city to me, it is home, it is family, it is community.

“To all the people, families, and businesses affected, please know you are not alone,” Fabregas said.

The former Spain midfielder ended his playing career at Como in 2023, with the club competing in Serie B, and began his managerial career there, helping them gain promotion as assistant coach and taking over as manager last season.

    Perrone likens Fabregas to Guardiola

Manchester City loanee Máximo Perrone, now at Como, says Cesc Fabregas has the ‘same DNA’ as Pep Guardiola: ‘It’s rare to find this style of play in Italy.’

Newly promoted Serie A side Como met  Antonio Conte’s Napoli at the Stadio Maradona yesterday.

Perrone, a 21-year-old Argentinean midfielder on loan from Manchester City, is expected to start for the visitors in the middle of the park.

“I like quality midfielders who set up attacks. This is the style of play I identify with. A role model? Rodri,” he told Gazzetta. “We are growing, game by game, trying to follow Fabregas’ instructions as best we can. We want to dominate proceedings; we know Napoli are a strong side, but we want to keep our identity.”

Perrone joined Manchester City from Velez in January 2023 and spent the last season on loan at Las Palmas. The 21-year-old has two appearances with the Manchester City senior team.

“It was a difficult but formative experience. Now I’m in Serie A, and I’m enjoying it and giving my best,” he said.“I like Serie A and I can’t wait to play the following games to enjoy this season at Como. I knew how tricky it was. It [Serie A] is very aggressive defensively.”

Morata and Fabregas headache for Chelsea

Antonio Conte will be without Alvaro Morata and Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Morata is ruled out of the encounter at the Emirates Stadium with a back problem in a blow to Conte and Chelsea’s hopes of reaching the Carabao Cup final.

‘Morata and Fabregas are out,’ Conte said. ‘They are not available for the Arsenal game. Then I have to check a couple of situations [with other players].

Chelsea were without the Spanish duo for the trip to Brighton on Saturday and ran out 4-0 winners but Conte stopped short of guaranteeing the same attack, which included Michy Batshuayi, would start against Arsenal.

‘I have another night before deciding the starting XI,’ Conte said. ‘Every game is different, the opponents change and you must be intelligent to understand if it is right to continue in the same way with the same players.’

But the fitness news wasn’t all bad for Chelsea, as Conte confirmed that centre-back Andreas Christensen is available for selection.

‘He is fit, he trained with us and he is fit,’ Conte said.

The Denmark international was taken off at Brighton after 55 minutes following a clash of heads with Shane Duffy.

Chelsea head to the Emirates a goalless draw at the Stamford Bridge in the first leg

‘In the first leg,I think the game was different,’ Conte said. ‘In this case you have two games to play to reach the final and it is right to have a plan.

‘For sure, there is a target for both teams to reach the final. After a draw, after a 0-0, the game will be open.’

  • I’m disappointed Fabregas went to Chelsea — Flamini

Mathieu Flamini says he is “disappointed” that Cesc Fabregas will be playing for Chelsea rather than Arsenal next season and admits it will be “strange” to compete against him on the pitch.

The Blues wrapped up a £30 million deal for the Spain international last month after Arsene Wenger passed up the chance to exercise a first-option clause and bring his former captain back to the Emirates Stadium

And Flamini – who forged a formidable midfield partnership with Fabregas before leaving Arsenal for AC Milan in the summer of 2008 – admits he would rather have seen the Spaniard return to the Gunners.

“I had an amazing time with him at Arsenal and he stayed a very close friend of mine,” Flamini told Goal at the launch of Arsenal’s new PUMA kits.

“I’m a bit disappointed that he’ll be playing with Chelsea rather than us, but I respect his decision.

“That’s football, and I’m very happy for him because I’m sure that if he’s moving back it’s because he wanted it.

“I’m also very happy that he’s coming back to London because he’s going to be my neighbour, so I’ll see him a lot!

“It will be very strange to play against him, and it won’t be easy – we were laughing about it when I saw him a few days ago – but I’m happy because it will give me the opportunity to see him a bit more than when he was in Barcelona.”

    Fabregas joins Chelsea

Chelsea has completed the signing of Barcelona midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, on a five year deal, Goal reports.

Jose Mourinho’s side is believed to have paid £30million for Fabregas, who is currently on World Cup duty with Spain.

The former Arsenal star scored eight La Liga goals for Barcelona and provided a further 19 assists in 36 appearances last season and thanked the Catalan giants after sealing his move to Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas told the club’s official website: “Firstly I would like to thank everyone at FC Barcelona where I enjoyed three wonderful years. It was my childhood club and I will always be proud and honoured that I had a chance to play for such a great team.

“I do feel that I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time to return.

“I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe that Chelsea is the best choice. The club matches my footballing ambitions with the hunger and desire to win trophies. Chelsea has an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can’t wait to start playing,” he stated.

    Fabregas fires Super Eagles warning

CESC Fabregas says Spain will treat the upcoming Confederations Cup ‘as a World Cup’ and that could mean stiff test for the Super Eagles as they are grouped with the World Champions in Group B alongside Uruguay and Tahiti

La Roja are the world and European reigning champions with the prelude to Brazil 2014 being the only tournament they have still yet to win.

Fabregas, 26, insists victory is something that the players and fans are dreaming about.

“We will treat the competition as a World Cup or a European Championship, that feeling that you can finish your career after taking the European Championship, the World Cup and the Confederations is very important for us and for the fans even more,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

Fabregas also spoke publicly about Spain captain Iker Casillas, who he claims remains positive despite having found himself out in the cold at Real Madrid in recent months under former coach Jose Mourinho.

He continued: “I can see that he’s very well, as ever, the most important thing is his attitude and that’s always very positive. I’ve known him for seven years and he’s a great captain. In bad moments, he always is [positive].”
