  • Students donate equipment to faculty

    The Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken delivery of new laboratory equipment. The materials were donated by the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students (PANS).

    Delivering the equipment, the association’s president, Benjamin Idiakhoa, said PANS’ gesture was to satisfy students’ needs.

    The donated materials included four microscopes, three cartons of porcelain dishes, four cartons of conical flasks, eight weight balances and 100 dispensing bottles.

    Receiving the equipment, Dean of the faculty, Prof John Akerele, said it was first time students would be donating to the faculty, saying: “It is very hard to find students committed to development of their school as we have seen. The donated materials will help in research and learning.”

    Prof Magnus Iwaugwu of the Department of Pharmaceutics hailed the association for the gesture. He said the equipment would improve quality of research carry out by students.

    Josiah Omoba, a 300-Level student, praised PANS for the intervention, stressing that students usually experienced difficulty in using some materials in the laboratory. He said: “We appreciate this act of generosity. This indicates PANS is feeling our pain.”

  • Faculty inducts pharmacists

    No fewer than 27 graduates of Pharmacy were inducted by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) at a ceremony witnessed by officials of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).

    The event was held at the school auditorium and had in attendance, the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Abdullah Abdu Zuru, represented by his deputy for Academics, Prof A.G. Yahaya, former VC, Prof Rizkuwa Arabu Shehu, VC of Federal University of Technology, Birin-Kebbi, Prof A.N. Bilbis, Director of Education and Training, Pharmaceutical Institution of Nigeria, Dr Anthony Udoko, and PSN member in Sokoto State, Mr Ibrahim Binji, among others.

    Prof Shehu, who chaired the event, hailed the leadership of the faculty for what he called “excellent training” the graduands received. He said: “I don’t think any institution in this country can boast of adequately-trained pharmacists as UDUS, considering the level of modern learning facilities which the school put in place.”

    He told the graduands to justify their knowledge by adhering to the ethics of the profession and uphold the values of their alma mater.

    While presenting the graduands for oath taking, the Dean of the faculty, Dr Musa Ismail Abdulahi, said: “We are presenting the best graduating students so far in the history of the faculty for licence to dispense and manufacture drugs.”

    He said six students graduated with distinctions, with the best among them having Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.76. Despite appreciable level of facilities, Abdulahi said the faculty had been facing inadequate lecture hall and staff office, pleading with the school management to do more.

    The Kano State chapter of the Association of Industrial Pharmacy of Nigeria donated two projectors to the faculty during the event.

    Abba Abubakar, the outstanding students, received PSN award of excellent with N35,000 cash. He also received the award for the Best Graduating Student in Clinical Pharmacy. His colleague, Siraju Yunusa, went home with Best Graduating Student award from Association of Industrial Pharmacy of Nigeria in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Gloria Idris, another graduand, was awarded Best Graduating Student in Ethical Dispensing.

    Gloria said: “I received this award based on my ability during the course of study. This will enable me to specialise in administrative pharmaceutics, where I think I can perform better.”

  • Lecture rooms for science faculty

    EKSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Aina has taken delivery of multi-million naira lecture rooms Faculty of Science.

    At the handing-over, the contractor, Mr Idowu Olanrenwaju of Hydee Construction Ltd, said that the building was done to specification.

    The new edifice was the second infrastructure handed within one week-following the completion of the e-exam centre five days earlier.

    The Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Kayode Olofintoye, thanked Aina for the facility, noting that its completion will enable workers to increase productivity.

     

     

    Aina thanked members of staff for their cooperation adding that the vision to make EKSU a world class institution is ongoing and very fast too.

    He urged the Faculty of Science to make judicious use of the edifice.

    He also assured that the ongoing construction of the five-storey new academic building to accommodate the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and other structures would be completed soon.

    Faculty wins soccer contest

    The Faculty of Management Science of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) has won the maiden Inter-Faculty Football Competition organised by the school’s management to develop students’ skills in sport.

    The school stadium was filled by students, who were there to support their faculties’ players. All the 11 faculties that make up the school participated in the contest, which had the participating teams divided into two groups in the preliminary stage.

    The opening game was between faculties of Social Science and Sciences; it ended in favour of the former after a penalty shootout.

    However, Management Science team beat Social Science 3:1 after a penalty shootout to qualify for the final match, where it met Faculty of Education team.

    In the first 12 minutes of the final match, Faculty of Education team scored a goal, which left the opposing Management Science team distressed. But, the Management Science team equalised in 29 minutes. After 90 minutes, the match ended in draw, leading to penalty shootouts. Faculty Management Science team beat its rival team 3:1 to win the trophy.

    The Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr Adamu Aliero, described the match as interesting, praising the students for showing spirit of sportsmanship. He hailed the school’s management for organising the contest.

    A player in Management Science team, Yusuf Adeyemo, said: he was excited by the feat, praising his teammates for their efforts.

    President of the winning faculty, Buhari Subair, who was the team’s coach, said his side won the contest because of teamwork.

    Management Science captain, Muttaka Hashim, said: “The feat did not only show the corporation of teammates, it also shows the level of success students can achieve if they work together.”

    The presentation of trophy was witnessed by the Deputy Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Y. A. Gobiri, his counterpart in City Campus, Dr A. A. Umar; Dr K. J. Jimoh of the Faculty of Law and Chairman of Caretaker Committee of Students’ Union Government, Al-amin Wushishi.

    Faculty honours CAMPUSLIFE reporter

    For being outstanding in news reporting, Ese Okoduwa, a 400-Level Home Economic Education student and CAMPUSLIFE reporter, has been honoured with the Best Campus Journalist Award by the Nigeria Union of Education Students Association (NUESA), Delta State University (DELSU) chapter.

    Ese was honoured at the third induction of the Faculty of Education held last Thursday on the main campus.

    While presenting the award, the association’s Staff Adviser, Prof C.N. Ikoji, said the award was to appreciate Ese’s effective reportage of activities in the faculty and on the campus in The Nation. Ikoji said appreciation should be expressed when the individual is alive, thanking Ese for projecting the image of the faculty to the world.

    Prof Ikoji also disclosed that CAMPUSLIFE had effectively reported activities of the faculty in the last two years, praising the management of The Nation for the platform.

    The NUESA President, Carlos Nwaokobia, said Ese had brought honour to the association, saying: “It beats my imagination when I learnt she is not a Mass Communication student.”

    Replying, Ese thanked the faculty and the association for the honour, dedicating the award to her colleague, Philip Okorodudu, and her mother, Mrs Juliana Okoduwa.

     

     

  • Faculty celebrates retiring lecturer

    It was all songs of praise and celebration at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede (NEKEDE POLY) in Imo State, when staff of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) held a thanksgiving in honour of their colleague, who retired from teaching.

    After 28 years of teaching, Sir Augustine Ohia, chief lecturer at the faculty, retired from the institution.

    The chairman of the occasion and Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Unit (APQU), Dr Obasi Oko, in his remarks, described the honoree as hardworking staff, saying he used his innovative ideas to bring about progressive changes in SHSS.

    His words: “With Sir Augustine Ohia, work moves perfectly. Give him an assignment and consider it done within a short time.”

    Dr. Oko hailed the SHSS staff for organising the session, stressing that the faculty always set the pace for others to follow. He urged Ohia’s colleagues to keep the legacy of hard work and quality service being left behind by the honoree.

    The Dean of the faculty, Mr Malachy Madu, urged lecturers to always look forward to retirement, noting that departing from teaching is not the end of life, but a time to rest and enjoy the reward of hard work.

    The Dean said Ohia was the first staff to be done such honour after retirement, describing the honoree as lucky man.

    Mr Victor Alozie, a chief lecturer and a former Dean of SHSS, praised the retiree for his selfless service, saying Ohia deserved the honour, having served meritoriously.

    The chairman, Valedictory Planning Committee and a lecturer, Dr Uhiara Anayo, recalled how challenging it was when the committee started its assignment, but praised God for the success of the event.

    Reacting, Ohia said he was surprised by the honour bestowed on him by staff of SHSS, thanking the school management for giving him the opportunity to serve in various capacities.

    He recalled how his academic journey started 28years ago after his employment as administrative officer. He noted that patience and hard work saw him through the service year.

    He urged all staff to be always be patient, focus, hardworking and dedicated to work of the school, reminding them that there is always a reward for everything they do.

    The event featured drama presentation by Mass Communication students, goodwill messages by lectures and guests and presentation of SHSS souvenirs.

    Guest at the occasion included the Rector, Dr Celestina Njoku, represented by her deputy for Administration, Mr Desmond Oparaku, Registrar, Mr I. M. Aligbe, Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr B. Igbokwe and the school orator, Dr Nnamdi Anumihe, among others.

     

  • Faculty woos potential writers

    The Faculty of Languages and Communication Studies, IBBU, in collaboration with AMAB Bookshop, has organised a “Poetrologue” for writers on poetry reading, chat and discourse to inspire students and younger generation to venture into poetry writing.

    The Dean of the Faculty, Dr Emmanuel Egya Sule, said students should not see writing, especially poetry, as daunting exercise; rather they should sharpen their intellectual abilities by developing critical minds while writing.

    The Director, Strategy, Operations and Logistics, AMAB Bookshop, Nur-d-din Busari, said the forum was created to give a voice to young aspiring poets to be heard and help the ones who have begun to excel to inspire others.

    He said apart from publishing young writers, AMAB Bookshop also brings hopeful young poets to the limelight.

    Faculty honours ‘baby lawyers’

    The Faculty of Law of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State has held a valedictory service for its outgoing students. The event was aimed at building a culture of cooperation and responsibility among the students.

    The event was attended by the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Abimbola Mukthar, Senior Special Adviser to Oyo State Government on Media, Mr Dejo Adebisi and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Saburi Adesanya, represented by Prof Mojisola Ogungbe, among others.

    The Dean of the faculty, Prof Olusesan Oluyide, said the occasion served as a send-off for the students and a platform to recognise their sacrifices.

    The event also featured lecture titled: Ethics of legal profession, delivered by the faculty’s alumni, Mr Niyi Oladunni and Mr Bunmi Oshifeso.

    Miss Aminat Dakeje, the best graduating student, in her speech, described her set as new babies of the faculty, advising her colleagues not to accept impossibilities as answer to their challenges.

    Those who distinguished themselves in their studies were honoured. They included Aminat, Oludare Onakoya and Gold Ikebugwu. They got awards of academic excellence. Also, Fadeke Abimbola, Abimbola Suninubi and Gold also got awards of leadership, while John Simon got an award on philanthropy and humanitarian service.

    Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, Gold gave God the glory for the honour, saying: “I have experienced good and bad, but I thank God I have scaled through. I also feel fulfilled being one of the awardees in my class.”

    Oludare said his stay on campus was interesting. “I faced so many challenges in the school, but I give thanks to God for surmounting them,” he said.

  • UNILAG’s Social Science faculty tops debate

    For the third consecutive time, the Faulty of Social Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has emerged winner  of the 2014 UNILAG debate.  The topic  is: “The 2015 election will make or mar Nigeria.”

    The Department of Political Science represented by a 200-Level undergraduate, Zainab Olaitan,   spoke in support and won with 85.6 per cent. It was followed closely by Dasaolu Olawale of the Faculty of Law, who countered Olaitan, scoring 80.6 per cent. Onoriode Maria of the Faculty of Engineering, who also spoke in support scored 78.3 per cent.

    Speaking to The Nation, Zainab said some points she marshaled such as: “the attitude of political class, political culture, lack of synergy between electoral system and the heterogeneous system of Nigeria, as well as the dependent nature of electoral commission and insecurity,” made her win.

    On what helped the department to win the debate for the third consecutive time, she said:  “We talk about the world and about social relations. So, we are the master of whatever we are doing here.”

    For the 2015 election to make positive impact on Nigeria, Zainab said government should erase parochial political culture and the mentality that election is not a means to an end.

    “If we see politics as an end game, then we will see it as a means to accumulate money.  If we see it as a means to be democratically scrutinised, then we can be a great nation, the Nigeria of our dream,” she added.

    She said she was grateful to God for winning. She thanked her lecturers, friends and colleagues who helped her prepare.

    The Chairman, panel of judges, Prof Segun Awonusi,  said the debaters were scored on, content, appearance, persuasiveness, fluency/diction, comportment/poise, and time management. He said the winner would go home with money and a Laptop computer.

    The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Rahamon Bello, promised other debaters from fourth to 12th position N50,000 each.

    Other debaters include Okungbowa  Ayokunle from the Faculty of Science; Muhammed Ahmed Oladipupo, Faculty of Arts and Ndifon Minka Cornelia, Faculty of Basic Science.
