  • Church, family in court over land

A senior Pastor of Christ is the Delivered Fire Church, Mrs. Nneka Okoli, has asked a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja to declare the church as the owner of six plots of land it allegedly bought from the Idowu Osho family of Isheri Osun in Lagos.

The claimant, who brought the suit for and on behalf of the promoters of Registered Trustees of the church, filed a suit before Justice Akinlade Olabisi challenging the family’s refusal to transfer ownership of the land situate at Ade Ojo area in Isheri Osun Town to the church.

The first to fifth defendants in the matter are Elder Akibu Ayawo (Olori Ebi), High Chief Shamsideen Amoo Mojeed, Alhaji Abbey (Surveyor), Mr. Adesioye Adeyemi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mr. Adeoye Oyelola.

In an affidavit filed before the court, the claimant said sometime in November 2014, the church purchased the land for N10million from the first and second defendants through the third and fourth defendants and completely paid for it in the company of her late husband, Pastor Chinedu Okoli.

The first and second defendants, it was alleged, orally acknowledged receipt of the N10million but convinced the claimant that only N2,650,000 could be covered on the family receipt.

The affidavit further stated that the first and second defendants, supported by the third and fourth defendants, claimed that the family, as a matter of customary rule “does not evidence any payment exceeding the stated amount in their family receipt, upon which the claimant believed them”.

It was also contended by the claimant that before her and the late Pastor Okoli, the third defendant in the presence of the first, second and fourth defendants, measured the six plots of land and performed customary rights of handing over the land to the claimant with kola nuts, a he-goat and other items.

The first and second defendant subsequently pronounced that they had handed over the six plots to the claimants and prayed for the claimant on the land, the claimant said.

Justice Akinlade adjourned hearing till February 23 due to the defendants’ absence.

    • Accuse Buhari of vendetta

The Dokpesi family yesterday contradicted the claim by Daar Communications PLC that the N2.1 billion received by its patriarch and founder of the company, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, was for political campaigns.

The money, the family said in a statement last night, was payment for “the various media exposures and campaign transactions which were dutifully carried out based essentially on contractual obligations/relationship.”

It also accused the Buhari government of seeking to decimate political opponents.

Dokpesi is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is investigating the disbursement of $2.2 billion budgeted for arms procurement by the Jonathan Administration.

The N2.1billion collected by Dokpesi is believed to have come from the arms budget.

Daar Communication had, in an earlier statement, said the money was payment for “the various media exposures and campaign transactions which were dutifully carried out based essentially on contractual obligations/relationship”.

The Dokpesis, however, contradicted this claim yesterday saying, in a statement signed by Raymond Dokpesi Jnr, that the N2.1billion was indeed for a proposal by Daar Investment and Holdings Company Ltd to “promote and project the achievements and highlight the challenges of his (Jonathan’s) government whilst demystifying false information gleefully circulated by the propaganda machinery of the then opposition party.”

The proposal, the family said, was submitted to the former president in person by Mr. Dokpesi and his team in the presence of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

It declared, “We must further emphasise that the proposal had absolutely nothing to do with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), nor the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).”

It also said the proposal was “thoroughly studied, approved and paid for by the presidency through the office of the National Security Adviser.”

It claimed that the office of the NSA “has multiple budgetary sub-heads including for communication and information.”

The family accused the Buhari government of embarking on a “wide scale propaganda, misinformation and brazen falsehood just to achieve its objective of decimating its perceived political opponents and supporters of the previous administration.”

It challenged government to thoroughly investigate all political and economic crimes “before embarking on a media trial and sentencing even before the law courts of Nigeria have an opportunity to adjudicate.”

The family described its patriarch as a law-abiding and consummate patriot “who has served Nigeria to the best of his ability,” adding, “for the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Dokpesi has never applied nor bided for a contract for the purchase of arms, nor has he ever been registered with the Ministry of Defence for the similar objective of engaging in the supply of arms for the government.”

  • How family would fare without HID?

How family would fare without HID?

The late Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo was the pillar of the Awolowo dynasty. She played this role more when her husband, the legendary Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died 28 years ago. Assistant Editor SINA FADARE examines how the matriarch’s exit will affect the family.

English poet William Shakespeare was right when he wrote many years ago that “When beggars die there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes”. In the last few days, prominent Nigerians have turned Ikenne in Ogun State to a Mecca of sorts, to pay their last respects to Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID), the wife of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Twenty-eight years ago, the country stood still following Awolowo’s exit. Today, the exit of the woman he described as “my jewel of inestimable value” is the talk of the town.

To the family, the Lord is great. Awolowo is a household name and almost a deity in the Southwest.

In a tribute to her mother, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, said: “She was a very quite person, very enterprising. After they got married, Papa initially said she should not work, but the business traits in her could not allow that. After some time, Papa permitted her to engage in trading. And since then, she had carried on working, she showed outstanding business acumen.”

She added: “The entire family will miss her leadership role. I will miss her wise counsel and motherly care. I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that she’s gone. I feel very disappointed and wished she had the opportunity to see how much she meant to everyone.”

The political family which Awolowo and his wife left behind will never forget the Sage’s legacies. Former Transport Minister Chief Ebenezer Babatope, who was Director of Organisation of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, Awolowo was a man of many parts.

According to Babatope, Awolowo was a wonderful, great and highly disciplined person, who impacted knowledge on his associates and all those who took him as their leader.

“He was exceptionally disciplined and exceptionally programmed. When he woke up between 4.30 a.m. and 5 a.m., he would have itemised what he wanted to do for the whole day. And he would achieve it. Apart from that, when it came to food items, Papa ate very little breakfast; he didn’t take lunch at all but in the evening he was there for his dinner.”

On how the late sage valued time, Babatope said: “If you invited Awolowo for a function and it is to start at 1 o’clock, by five minutes to 1 o’clock, Papa would be there. If you are not ready after 20 to 25 minutes, Papa would leave. He was highly disciplined. He wrote great books out of a disciplined mind. ‘My March Towards Prison’ was written and then there was the volume 2, ‘Travails of Democracy’. The other was ‘Adventures in Power’. He couldn’t complete the third one which could have been titled ‘For the Good of the Man’. You cannot do this without being a disciplined person. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to serve under him because my life has been enriched with what I have been taught by the life and times of Papa Awo.”

Delivering the maiden edition of Awolowo memorial lecture in 2004 titled: “Awolowo and the longest goodbye”, erudite scholar Prof Adebayo Williams noted that for many years to come, the Awo dynasty will be a reference point.

According to him, “Chief Awolowo’s greatness was defined by the greatness of the historical circumstances that threw him up, the greatness of the expectations, and, of course, the greatness of the many historical figures he had to contend with, often in open confrontation but sometimes also in paradoxical complicity.

“Chief Awolowo left a legacy as a great planner and economic wizard. If he were to come back, he would have been greatly saddened by the pandemic of corruption and the economic disaster facing the nation today”.

The eminent scholar added: “In remembering Chief Awolowo and his legacy, we must also remember that the essence of Awoism is of a living body of ideas by which a people, or a nation, can lift themselves by the bootstraps in their quest for economic development and political emancipation. An ideology is not a religion or faith which is fixed and frozen in time.”

Williams noted that whenever political gladiators got to a cross road in the nation’s history, they referred to the late sage’s thoughts.” For at every tragic turn, at every miscue, be it at the level of structural deformities of this unfortunate nation, its suffocating and stifling unitarism, its economic malaise, its educational collapse, its spiritual bankruptcy, its corrupt and thieving political class, and its gradual descent into the anomie of ungovernability, we are confronted by the figure of the man with the horn-rimmed glasses. And until we come to terms with many of his ideas, either by transcending them through superior political engineering or working through them through a more rigorous intellectual engagement, the piercing eyes behind the lens will continue to haunt us, reminding us of our inadequacies as intellectuals, as philosophers, as politicians and as a nation”

    Family sues ex-minister over land

The former Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olukolade has been sued before an Abuja High Court by the Oladapo family in Ondo town over the ownership of a landed property.

The property which is the subject of litigation is situated in Plot 321, Zone A7 Wuse 11, Abuja.

Other  defendant in the matter is Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Federal Capital Development Authority.

The plaintiffs are praying the court that the purported  revocation/withdrawal of the plaintiffs right of occupancy in respect of the land was unconstitutional and illegal, hence is null, void and of no effect.

They asked the court  for an  order mandating Olukolade to vacate all the structure on the  land and granting possession of the land and a perpetual injunction directing the defendants, their agents, servants and privies from entering and further trespassing or disturbing the plaintiff from  peaceful possession of the land in dispute.

The plaintiffs also demanded for N150m, being damages for unlawful transfer/allocation of the  landed property in dispute and N100m for trespass, forcible entry and unlawful  occupation and use of the plaintiff’s land.

According to them, the former Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory used government machinery to harass and  chase away contractors engaged by them and ever since dinied them access to the land.

The defendants in their statement of claim averred that the land in dispute was allocated to their  late father during his life as a member of House of Representatives in the First Republic and was  given a certificate of Right of Occupancy with reference number FCDA/ES/80/OD-13 along with schedule of Right of Occupancy Rent indicating the rent to be paid.

According to them, the deceased commissioned a registers surveyor, Geodata Limited which  produced a survey plan with number -FCT/ABU/OD.130 with full Beacon number – FCTA7PB1614, dated April 7, 1992.

The defendant is his reply argued that the land was allocated to him sometimes in 1997 and  commenced all the necessary documentation of the land sometimes in May 1998, adding that he  did not meet anybody on the land as at 1998 when it was lawfully allocated to him.

The defendant contended that the plaintiffs plan allegedly was an afterthought and a document  prepared in contemplation of the suit saying that the deceased and the plaintiffs were the rightful  owners or in possession of the property.

He averred that the plaintiffs did not make physical inspection of the land, saying that they would have known and had knowledge of the first defendant’s legal ownership and possession of the land since 1998.

  • Family foundation (4)

    Hello Reader,

In my first teaching, I showed you how to put God first in building a solid foundation for your family. I also taught you the key of agreement and how fulfilling your mutual obligations as a couple can sustain your home. However, if you have decided to make God first in your family and engage the keys of agreement and mutual obligations, you will also need to give your family quality time investment if you desire success in your home. That is why in this week’s edition, I will be teaching on Family Investments.

The Word of God says: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). There must be time allocated for your family also. As a man, husband and father, you must ensure that regular time is scheduled for your family. As a woman, wife and mother, you must do all you can to make regular time available for your family.

Happy homes do not fall from the sky; they are made to happen and this is done with the effective use of time.  Therefore, before you get carried away by your daily activities and turn your home to a place where you only eat, sleep and conclude outstanding office work, remember to make time for your family. Time can always be created out of ‘no time’ and though time may not necessarily be long enough, you can make even the little time you have, matter to your family.

The first person to consider in your family time investment is your spouse. Many couples have time for themselves within the first few weeks of marriage and afterwards never do. This becomes even worse when they start having children in the family. It is the reason many marriages that start off so sweetly, fail. Many couples, who think they know themselves, later discover that they really don’t. Investing family time with your spouse will help build trust, confidence, peace, knowledge and a better understanding in your relationship. It will help you know each other better.

There is nothing as hurting as when one party is neglected in a marriage.  Many men just see their wives as a good cook, cleaner, mother of their children and keeper of the home. This is so, because family time has not been invested to know who their wives really are. 1 Peter 3:7 admonishes: Likewise, ye husbands dwell with them (wives) according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Every man should invest enough time in order to be knowledgeable about his wife. He must spend quality time with his wife so much that he knows his wife’s taste for things like: toiletries, wears, colours and her likes, and dislikes. The woman, on the other hand, should invest enough quality time to know her husband’s taste for things too. She must be concerned about his well-being at work, business/career, his success and his professional accomplishments.

Usually, while a man craves for respect from his wife first and then others, the woman’s self-worth is in place when she is loved and appreciated, first by her husbands and then others.

Secondly, family time must be invested on children to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. A child is a gift from God, a blessing to the family and a unique blend of husband and wife (Psalm 127:3).  This is why time must also be created for them. This helps to build love, security and trust. The best environment to raise a child is at home and as parents, God mandates us to fulfill this task. Once you learn to order your priorities, you will discover that the time invested in meeting their needs will not be in vain. Therefore, invested quality family time in building a solid foundation for your child(ren). By so doing, when he or she leaves home to a place where you cannot see him or her physically, the knowledge of what was taught would become his or her guide. Invest regular time with them like play time, homework and assignment time. Be available to answer their questions and teach them to read the Word of God.Wives, if your husband is the busy type, use the wisdom of God to get him to create time for the children.  Time is a very important thing you should invest on your children, not money. For instance, there was a time when our children would come to me with questions that I felt their father should hear and be the one to answer. I would walk them to his study door and leave them to go in and meet him. Afterwards, they would come back excited and smiling, having had their questions answered. Now, they can confidently go to him and freely share matters from their hearts. In fact, when they come into his study, he sets them at ease by asking: “How was school today? What did you do at break-time? Did you eat your school lunch?” This type of intimacy and open communication is very useful for their emotional stability. Finally, time should be invested for your parents, relations and in-laws but this should be done in wisdom and not at the expense of your immediate family.

The power to build a solid foundation for your family only comes from God. If you need this power, you must be born again. This is by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. If you are ready for this new birth experience, please say this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner.  Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood.  Deliver me from sin and Satan to serve the living God.  I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

  • Family foundation (3)

    Hello Reader,

Welcome to yet another time in God’s presence. In my first teaching, I showed you how to put God first in building a solid foundation for your family. Last week, I taught on the Key Of Agreement and this week, I will be teaching on Fulfilling Your Mutual Obligations.

In building a solid foundation for your family, it is a must that you fulfill your mutual obligations. When I say ‘mutual obligations,’ I mean romance, affection, intimacy and sexual relationship that should be fulfilled in your marriage. God’s idea of procreation establishes the coming together of husband and wife. The Word of God says: Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband (1Corinthians 7:1-5).

Many homes are broken today because couples lack the understanding of this concept. The moment a home becomes deficient in marital affairs or romance, it will begin to break. Sexual relationship is God’s approved channel for procreation and pleasure. Everything done against it by either the husband or the wife is targeted at the ruin of the home. The Word of God says: And Adam knew Eve his wife; and conceived and bare Cain… (Genesis 4:1). This means that Adam had marital sex with his wife and she conceived.

Proverbs 5:18-19 says: Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.  Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. God intended that couples fulfill their mutual obligations for procreation and pleasure. He created the necessary organs and feelings in you, so that this commandment can be fulfilled. Fulfilling your mutual obligations with a wholesome approach to it will heal many wounds in homes today. Statistics show that families where the husband and wife enjoy each other sexually are the happiest homes. “For the breasts of a man’s wife to satisfy him,” means that the two of them have pleasure in marital sex.

Someone once said that probably more fraud is practised in marriage than in any other area of life. This is because at the request of sex, you hear many husbands and wives give excuses such as: “Not now! I have a headache.” “Why don’t you think about something else for a change?” “I am too tired” or “I am too busy.”

Not fulfilling your mutual obligation is marital fraud and every act of marital fraud is an offence. It rubs the homes of glory and beauty. When you fulfill your mutual obligations, you will find out that every act of love expressed becomes the engine oil that keeps your marriage running smoothly. It also successfully blocks any loopholes that might give the enemy a foothold in your marriage. When mutual obligations are fulfilled, the husband and wife will both be satisfied and their level of productivity in other areas will be at its maximum! A man can withstand any shortcoming in a marriage like: “She can’t cook,” “She’s too fat,” “She’s not submissive,” “She’s not even a Christian.” But, he will not be able to stay with a wife who does not fulfill her mutual obligations. Behind every separation or divorce is a breakdown in either party fulfilling his or her mutual obligations.

After the solemnization of a marriage, the rules of abstaining from sex as singles, engaged or in courtship ends. Sex is no longer forbidden; if anything, it becomes an essential part of the union. However, the marriage bed can be defiled by the married, when adultery is committed by the man or the woman.  God’s Word in Hebrews 13:4 says: Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Adultery opens the door for God’s judgment and causes you to lose your spouse’s respect, and honour that was originally meant for marriage.

Rather than been caught in the web of adultery, make yourself available for your spouse and fulfill your mutual obligations. You may just need to go back to those little acts of love you used to do, when you first got married: those sweet things that made your honeymoon exciting. You might need to start treating your spouse a lot more lovingly: doing whatever is necessary to ensure the fulfillment of your mutual obligations. You will not fall into any of the enemy’s trap in Jesus’ name!

Without God you cannot build a foundation for your family. As such, you need to surrender your life to the Lord Jesus Christ today and be born again. You can say this prayer if you wish to do so: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and Satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

Congratulations! You are now born again! All-round rest and peace are guaranteed you, in Jesus’ Name. Call or write, and share your testimonies with me through contact@faithoyedepo.org; OR 07026385437 and 08141320204.

  • Family petitions IG over member’s death

The family of the late Mrs. Rachael Oladejo, a health officer in Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase over the woman’s death.

In a petition through their lawyer, Henry Adegbemile, dated September 2, the deceased was allegedly knocked down by a truck driver attached to the Dangote firm at Adebayo Junction, Igbara-Oke headquarters of the local government on her way to church.

The truck, with registration number Benue XA 336 BKB allegedly skidded off the road and hit the victim.

Adegbemile said the driver; Umar Abubakar was subsequently arrested by the police in Igbara-Oke division and dragged to the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Igbara-Oke.

However, the petitioner said after Mrs. Oladejo spent almost four months in the hospital, she died on April 23 as a result of injuries she sustained in the incident.

The lawyer alleged that neither Dangote Group nor the driver has shown any concern on the incident and eventual death of the late public health officer.

According to him, the driver, despite being charged for reckless driving, on hearing the death of his victim, disappeared since then.

The petitioner also said his clients, Dr Busuyi Mekusi and Miss Adebukola Faloyo believed that the driver’s employer, Dangote Group of Companies knew his whereabouts and were of the opinion that the accused was being shielded from justice.

He lamented that since the death of Mrs. Oladejo, her children have been in distress and living from hand to mouth.

Adegbemile said: “The Inspector-General of Police should order thorough investigation into the disappearance of the driver from court and ensure that he is re-arrested for prosecution over the death of the deceased.

The lawyer pleaded that Mrs. Oladejo’s case should not be one of the many unresolved deaths of “negligent” driving on the part of those in the employ of Dangote Group across Nigerian roads.

He said his clients have also petitioned the chairman, Dangote Group demanding a compensation of N500 million.

  • Family demands compensation for ‘airport’ project land

The proposed airport project of the Ayo Fayose administration is causing more controversy as the family which owns the land claimed it was not notified before bulldozers moved to site last Friday.

The Iwajo Family of Aso Ayegunle, on Ijan Road in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, is demanding compensation on the economic trees on the land “in line with the law of the land”.

Its members said they were shocked to see bulldozers and other earth-moving equipment on the land without any notice and without their consent.

They claimed the project besides destroying the cocoa plantations would also render not less than 5,000 workers jobless.

The family said throwing over 5,000 cocoa plantation owners and workers out of job would defeat the “stomach infrastructure” policy of the Fayose administration.

Rising from a meeting at the weekend presided over by the head of the family, Chief Moses Ojo, and attended by over 1,000 people, the family  resolved to hold a follow-up meeting with the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe today at his palace.

It claimed to have been on the land for over 500 years, saying the land was not suitable because it is a cocoa belt, which spreads to Igbemo-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area and never a virgin land.

Members said they don’t want to be added to the ever-increasing number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs),  expressing fear that the airport project could trigger a refugee crisis in the area, if they are chased out of their ancestral land.

They recalled that when government acquired the land on which the Ondo State House of Assembly complex was built, land owners were given prior notice and compensated, although there was no cocoa plantation there and that such a ‘benevolent’ action was taken by a military regime.

The resolution signed by Ojo, the secretary, Osho Olorunfemi and Chief Italohun Fadahunsi, called on the government to consider another virgin land on Ado-Ijan Road, if the family and owners of the cocoa plantations won’t be compensated.

They said: “The Land Use Decree gives a person using a place for about a century title to the land. Before taking the land from the person using it, royalty should be paid to the owner apart from the property on the land.

“Ekiti is known to be a cocoa-producing state and this site is renowned for cocoa production. To the best of our knowledge, any land being acquired by government, it is expected that government should settle the owner on the land and property therein before moving to site.

“To the best of our knowledge, all the farm owners at the present (Federal) Polytechnic were settled before moving to site. We are afraid that stomach infrastructure will be defeated if about 5,000 people are driven away by force.

“As far as we are friends of this government, government in turn should put our interest into consideration before any project that is secondary to our well-being is executed.

“If eventually the government sticks to its decision to site the project on this spot, there should be compensation and adequate notice given to allow those who have repayable crops to harvest their crops before moving to the site.”

But Commissioner for Works Kayode Osho allayed the fear of the family and the people of Aso Ayegunle community.

Osho, the chairman of the airport project implementation committee, assured the people that adequate compensation would be paid to owners of the land and economic trees.

The commissioner, however, was non-committal on when the compensation will be paid.
