  • Family demands body of FRSC man killed by ‘reckless driver’

The family of the late Adebomojo Oluwaseun, an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command who was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Sunday on official duty has called for the release of his body for burial.

The elder sister to the deceased, Mrs. Adeola George-Ogosi, who spoke yesterday on behalf of the family in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, urged well-meaning Nigerians to implore the FRSC to release the body for burial.

The distraught woman said this would reduce the trauma the family has been going through since their son’s demise.

She said: “Since the breaking of news about Oluwaseun’s death, the family has been in sadness: his mother and wife are currently on hospital bed and doctors are still trying to revive them from the shock.

“We were told by the FRSC that it had completed its autopsy; necessary documents have been filled and we are expecting his body to arrive today. But we were suddenly told that there is an ‘order from above’ that his body should not be released.

“This has caused us another trauma. We are appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to speak to the FRSC.

“We were told the driver escaped but the vehicle was impounded. What has happened can’t be reversed, but we must forestall the occurrence of another sad event in the family, which might be occasioned by the delay currently being experienced in the release of his body by the FRSC.”

Mrs. George-Igosi said efforts to convince the FRSC on the need to immediately release the body of the deceased and prevent imminent challenges to the family had been fruitless.

Also, efforts by reporters to speak with the FRSC official, who had been relating with the family, proved abortive, as his phone was switched off.

He added that his father’s major wish was to publish a book about his experiences in life and in politics.

“One of my father’s major ambitions was to document some of his experiences in life and his understanding of the Nigerian project. However, this could not be achieved by him due to long-term sight problem that he had to battle in the last 11 years of his life.

“He repeatedly re-echoed this desire at any opportunity during his last few years on earth. It didn’t take too long after his death before I realised that I owe him an obligation to, at least, compile some of his available lectures and write ups to help in actualising his dream,” he said.

Speaking at the occasion as the Chairman, Lt. General Oladipupo Diya commended the children of the late politician for choosing a topic bordering on the restructuring of the country for the 20th anniversary.

He explained that the topic was important in view of the call for it across the country, noting that the issue was gaining momentum.

He said for Nigeria to move forward, all hands must be on deck to re-engineer it.

“We learnt they took these amphibian that they hawk around with it. So we are not sure if it is the source of the death because some of them are poisonous.

“Though we have not identified the culprit in terms of whether it is organism or chemical, definitely, it is a symptom of food poison.

“But our suspicion is the amphibian. It could be preservatives that were used on the items that were used for the meal,’’ he said.

When a  our correspondent sought confirmation of the Police in Kwara on the incident, its spokesman, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, said the command was not aware of the incident.

  • Family holds cancer screening for 200 after losing relative

Still nursing the pains of losing their brother to prostate cancer, the Adesoye family has organised prostate cancer screening for members of the public.

This, the family said, will help many who are not aware of the killer disease to take it serious and prevented avoidable deaths.

No fewer than 200 people benefitted from the exercise which was in partnership with the NASFAT Agency for Zakat and Sadaqat (NAZAS).

During the free medical services on prostate cancer in Lagos, the representative of the Adesoye Family, Otunba Ogungboyega Adesoye, said the free screening and treatment was a form of reflection on the circumstances that surrounded the death of his brother, Oyebade Arasim Adesoye.

He said: “It is unfortunate that we lost my elder brother to prostate cancer and all efforts to cure him were fruitless. He was actually ignorant of the prostate cancer.  At the initial stage, he was not aware of it and he was using the traditional medication. By the time he told us, we took him to the hospital, even up to London hospital, but it was too late. We believed that many Nigerians might also die of the disease if they were not informed of the danger of the disease.”

  • Police arrest man for threatening Atiku, family

The police headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital, yesterday paraded a 43-year-old man for allegedly threatening former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to either withdraw from next year’s presidential race or have his plane blown up mid-air.

Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood, an Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), said Augustus Akpan allegedly used a stolen phone to threaten a wife and daughters of the former Vice President with rape.

Akpan, who hails from Edemaya village in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was reportedly arrested while fleeing to Lagos.

He was also said to have extorted huge sums of Nigerian money and foreign currencies from unnamed high profile citizens with false claims of being an operative of the United States of America’s (U.S.A’s) Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Moshood also said the suspect, who speaks fluent English, Ibibio, Russian and Portuguese languages, will remain in their custody until investigations are concluded and he is arraigned in court.

He added: “On the receipt of a complaint of threat and intimidation from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 43-year-old Augustus Akpan was trailed and eventually arrested by the IGP Intelligence Response Team.

“Akpan was arrested at the toll plaza on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos State while he was on the run to escape arrest. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and admitted that he resorted to the threat and intimidation when efforts to extort money from the former Vice President were unsuccessful.

“The suspect also admitted in his confessional statement that he is a professional fraudster and not working for any party. He said his mention that ‘Let Buhari run against your against your PDP members’ in his threat message to the former Vice President was merely to divert attention.

“The suspect is fluent in English, Ibibio, Russian and Portuguese languages. The phone and the subscriber identification module (SIM) card he used for the threat and intimidation were recovered from him and were discovered to have been stolen from a lady who identified him as the person who robbed her few months back.

“Akpan further confessed that he had threatened, defrauded and extorted huge sum of Nigerian money and foreign currency from so many prominent personalities and their families while posing as an FBI and CIA agent.”

  • Family, developer quarrel over land

Who owns a large parcel of land at Sangotedo in Lekki-Ajah, Lagos State, which is a subject of dispute between a family and a developer?

The Oyemade Royal family of Sangotedo is laying claim to the land, which it accused the developer, Kelechukwu Mbagwu, of grabbing from it.

    But Mbagwu denied the allegation.

Addressing reporters yesterday during the family’s protest in Oyetubo Jokotade Estate in Sangotedo, its lawyer, Tunde Popoola, asked that Mbagwu be brought to justice.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions, such as: “How can an individual take laws into his hands?”; “Justice must be done”; “Kelechukwu Mbagwu is lawless”; “Kelechukwu Mbagwu is a land grabber”.

They were accompanied by the family head (Olori Ebi), Mr. Tajudeen Ajenifuja; the heads of the three houses in the royal family, Alhaja Simirat Adenike Hassan (for Oyetubo House); Mr. Biliaminu Yekeen (Banjoko House) and Alhaja Ganiat Balogun (Okunade House).

Others are: the Baale, Alhaji Jamiu King, of Oyemade family.

According to Popoola, from August 19; 20, Mbagwu allegedly moved into the said land with his boys, gun wielding men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and bulldozers and levelled buildings that were under construction.

“After that act, he stationed armed Mobile policemen on the property who started shooting indiscriminately at the approach of any person and prevented the family members and owners of the buildings who came the following day to assess the damage done”.

Popoola said it took a petition from the family to the Area “J” Command of the police in Ajah to get the Mobile policemen off from the property.

“Kelechukwu invaded the parcel of land with a bulldozer and demolished all the existing structures. There was no order of court authorising him to demolish the property in the midnight. He took laws into his hands without any appropriate court order; the level of lawlessness is alarming and unprecedented.

“The Oyemade family demands justice, Kelechukwu must be brought to book and we will not rest until Kelechukwu is brought to book,” he said.

Popoola said the family gave Mbagwu, CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Ltd. Managing Director, some hectares of land in March 2003 on which he built the Pearl Garden Estate.

“But he has since gone beyond that parcel of land to be taking possesion of the family land illegally and selling without reference to the owners”, he said.

Ajenifuja, the Olori-ebi General, said land grabbers were not doing the public any good because “they deny owners the right to their property and subject them to penury”.

He said: “All we want in this matter is justice, we want the government to assist us to get justice”.

A property owner, Chima Duru, said he had spent over N5million on his property before it was demolished. His wife, he said, collapsed and was admitted in hospital when she heard about the demolition.

Speaking on Mbagwu’s behalf, his lawyer, Alexander Okpako said: “At no time did CMB demolish anything on the said land.”

CMB , he said, had the tittle to the land.

“The family has been trying to rescue the land from CMB and they have been on it for some years now and in doing that they employ some tricks, they send some landgrabbers to demolish properties, they then run to police to say CMB has demolished their property. They have been harassing CMB with police on the land,” he said.

Okpako said there were about three to four cases on the matter in court, adding, CMB has handed over the matter to the court, both parties have joined issues in court.

“But because of desperation to possess the land, they commit atrocities and go to the police to say it is CMB,” he claimed.

  • Sustaining the Christian home (1)

Dear Reader, happy new month! This month speaks new beginnings! This might be in your family, career, health, finances, etc.; however, in whatever area you believe God for a change, He will do something new for you. Just as God promised in His Word:  Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert (Isaiah 43:19). This verse shall be practical in your life this month in Jesus’ name.

Building an ideal family, fashioned after God’s Word can be a beautiful experience. Yes, it comes with a lot of hard work, but the end result is always priceless. Moreover, it is not enough to build a Christian home, it has to be sustained. This is why this month, we will be learning how toSustain a Christian Home.

    What is a Christian Home?

A Christian family is not just a home, where everyone is a Christian, but much more, it is a Christ-like home. A family that is administered according to Scriptural principles; which represent God’s mind, ways and styles. Jesus Christ is the foundation of a Christian family. Therefore, a Christian family is a group of people who are related to each other through marriage, birth or adoption and are committed to the person and work of Jesus Christ. A home where Jesus Christ is loved, honoured and obeyed (Colossians 2:6-7).

    Importance of the Christian Family

    1. The family is the oldest institution known to man. It began in the Garden of Eden when God said, it is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him a help meet for him (Genesis 2:18).
    2. The family is the parent and not the child of the society. If the family is weak, the society will be weak and vice versa. The health of any nation/society is determined by the health of the families there.
    3. The family is the bedrock of the church. Strengthening the family implies strengthening the Church and in turn, the world and vice versa. One of the most important things that anyone can do for his country and for the Lord’s church is to establish and maintain a Christian family. In order to accomplish this noble purpose, the family must be founded upon and guided by the Word of God.
    4. It is the right platform for godly home training, thereby building godly and strong character in individuals who are future leaders.

    Characteristics of A Christian Family

    1. Christ-like manner.

A family that is truly Christian is Christ-like which means that its members will treat each other as each would like to be treated (1 John 2:6, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Ephesians 5:1-2). They would act like Christ and be worthy of emulation.

    1. Every member of the family accepts Christ.

The acceptance of Christ is a solid foundation on which a Christian home is built. Your family’s relationship with Jesus is the corner stone to the success of your home. This is why it is important for parents to ensure that all

members of the family are devoted to Christ and are in active service in God’s vine year. That way, you can be assured of a good future for your family.

    1. Accepting Scriptural responsibility.

All members of a Christian home are required to accept their scriptural responsibilities. The Christian father will not provoke his children to wrath but will nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) The Christian son and daughter will obey their Parents in the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-3). And a Christian wife will be submissive to her husband, loving all members of the family in the love of Christ.

    1. Open honesty and integrity

A Christian home is where open and complete honesty and integrity are practiced, without hypocrisy, making possible complete confidence and trust. God’s expectation for the family is to share a bond that cannot be easily broken and this comes primarily through genuine openness, honesty, trust and love for one another.

If family success is your aim as a Christian, then you must ensure that you co-operate with God to make the home a mini-paradise on the earth, as it is supposed to be. The truth is: the success of your home is solely dependent on you. When you do your part as laid down in Scriptures, then God is committed to releasing His help towards the perfection of your home.

Help from God will come faster for you when you are born again. If you are already born again, rejoice because your case is settled. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

  • Family, friends, celebrate Ayo Olukotun at 65

It was a gathering of scholars when a political scientist, Prof Ayo Olukotun, celebrated his 65th birthday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The event highlighted the role of intellectuals as humanists. EVELYN OSAGIE was there.

What is the wealth of a public intellectual dubbed humanist? Money? Fame or tangible assets? Some say the successful application of one’s research to public life is the ‘greatest gain’ of an intellectual.

Decrying the missing interface between research and application, in addition to the widening gap between the academia and society, some critics argued that the intellectual who would find relevance should be public-oriented. Academics, they added, no longer possess the privilege of complacency, of choosing to remain cloistered within the walls of the academy, of engaging only with the members of their disciplines.

These submissions were made at a birthday colloquium in honour of Prof. Ayo Samuel Olukotun, whose intellectual voyage spans the academia and media.

Olukotun, a renowned political scientist and media scholar, is the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, Political Science Department, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

The event marking his 65th birthday brought together dignitaries from all walks of life to the International Conference Centre of the Lead City University in Ibadan.

Olukotun was dressed in a wine-colour Agbada. His wife, Stella, who is also an academic, by his side.

The event, chaired by Osun State Governor  Rauf Aregbesola, had as keynote speaker a professor of International Relations and Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Belgium and European Union, Alaba Ogunsanwo.

They called him a “mentor”,  an “enviable academic” and a “fine columnist”, whose works have contributed to the shaping of public policy and discourse in the past three decades. But his wife called him “a great man, “ a loving father”, who has remained her “pillar of strength and inspiration”.

As an academic, he has lectured at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Lagos and Lagos State University. He was a visiting professor of International Relations at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He was also a distinguished professor and head, Department of Political Science and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences at the Lead City University.

Celebrating the “birthday boy” with the one-day roundtable, the chairman, Governing Board of the Lead City University, Prof Jide Owoeye, said the event was a deliberate act meant to call attention to the significant contributions of Olukotun to public discourse, media, academia and the country at large.

His words: “It is good that we are recognising and celebrating one of the great Nigerians who deserve to be celebrated while alive. His contributions to the intellectual growth of our country are indeed worthy of note. We were classmates as Masters Students.”

As a public intellectual, Olukotun, a columnist with the Punch, has been in the vanguard of nationalistic struggles over the last three decades, advocating a Nigeria that works for all classes of the society, it was said.

Using the person of Olukotun as a case study, Ogunsanwo spoke on the theme: The public intellectual as a humanist. Ogunsawo, who was formerly Head of Department at University of Lagos (UNILAG), when Olukotun was a lecturer there, described the celebrator as a seasoned analyst who understands the underlying relationship between governance, democracy institutions and society at large.

He called for synergy among the academia, policymakers and the public, observing that Nigeria’s academia is rich with diverse development-driven researches, which if properly applied, would lead to immense growth in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

As a journalist, he was the Chair of the Editorial Board of Daily Times; and through his weekly penetrative columns that have appeared in Daily Times, Guardian, Compass and Punch and several other frontline newspapers, Olukotun evokes deep ideas to challenge issues of bad governance in the country, while copiously recommending alternative pathways to national redemption.

While recounting Olukotun’s role in his intellectual voyage, Aregbesola decried the gap between the academia and society. For the governor, who was represented by Director-General, Office of for Economic Development and Partnership (OEDP), Dr Charles Akinola, the “ultimate goal of research should be problem solving and every academic endeavour should fulfil the criteria of relevance and responsibility”.  He stated that Olukotun has a way of applying his academic prowess into shaping society, and that he remains a model for emulation by academics in other fields.

He said: “Prof Olukotun has made his mark, without doubt, on the Nigeria social and political landscape. I have been exposed to his intellectual works. I consider it a privilege to have been drinking from his intellectual fountain all these years. It is most regrettable that academics conduct research mostly for promotion and occupation of academic chairs. Yet, there are existential challenges in society that should not just be the focus of research but application as well. Successful application of research should also be considered in the promotion and reward of academics.”

He described Olukotun as a “good friend and dependable ally” who has been part of his struggles and public life. “His is a friendship that I treasure so much. At 65, an academic is like vintage wine, at its best, even if he is approaching formal retirement. But I can assure you that he is nowhere near retirement. As an academic and journalist, he is well decorated and honoured at home and abroad. But his best is yet to come. On behalf of my family, the government and good people of Osun, I most heartily celebrate the distinguished Prof Olukotun and wish him a very happy birthday and many years in the service of God and humanity.”

Akinola recalled the early days of Olukotun as a student unionist. As a former Students Union President in the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in the 1970s, Akinola recollected that Olukotun believed in an intellectually-driven unionism and promoted non-violent protest and in seeking redress on issues.

The colloquium also featured as discussants, such as UNILAG Head of Department, Mass Communication, Prof Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika; Vice Chairman, Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy, Dr Tunji Olaopa; Caleb University Vice Chancellor, Prof Diji Aina; and development practitioner and CEO/Principal Consultant, Sustainable Impact Konsult, Mr Bolaji Ogunseye.

The public intellectual as a humanist, Prof Aderemi noted, is “transformative agent who engages the rulers and ruled in a symbiotic way that gives rise to economic growth.

Olukotun as a mentor extraordinaire was further highlighted by the papers presented. As if it was planned, each discussant recounted his fatherly cum mentorship role in growth of their careers – whether as a journalist or a scholar. Ogwezzy-Ndisika recollected how Olukotun was very instrumental for her becoming a professor and columnist, stating: “Prof Olukotun is not only a seasoned intellectual but a father who is committed to the growth of his own. From the very beginning, he has been interested and monitors my progress. From time to time, he calls me up for progress report, while encouraging me to stay focused and not give up”.

On his part, Olaopa praised Olukotun’s contribution to knowledge and national conversation, stating that as “one of the leading lights in this new thrust of public intellectualism in Nigeria, he is a colleague of the pen and public discourse”.

While calling on scholars to borrow a leaf from Olukotun’s example, he urged that they “engage with the general public or policy-makers more frequently, and translate their research into a language that is accessible to audiences that lack familiarity with disciplinary discourses”.

He asserted: “The intellectual must be able to bridge the divide between the gown and the town; a long-standing problem in our clime. That is where the public intellectual becomes relevant. By engaging with the public, academics can strengthen democracy and bolster the position of education within a democratic society.

“Olukotun has shown us that great minds no longer captivate the public as they once did, because the university has become too insular and academic thinking too narrow. His life and commitments to the public good are instructive to us today, even as we gather to celebrate this remarkable scholar.”

According to the Chairman of the Olukotun@65 Organising Committee, Dr. Tunde Oseni, friends, colleagues and mentees of the celebrant put together the event “in honour the man who has shown leadership, strength of conviction and has lived a most purposeful life in the last 65 years’’.

”Indeed, over the last three decades of consistent engagement, he has emerged not just as a dominant name, but as a reliable brand. The event is especially conceived to interrogate the life of the celebrant, his scholarship and his impact on the society at large.”

Prof Toyin Falola, who sent his regards from the University of Texas, US, averred that Olukotun “shows us the value of public trust and intellectual integrity, a wholesome fountain that never runs dry”.

His poem, On Becoming An Elder, in honour of the celebrator, was performed by Evelyn D’Poet at the event.

  • Police foil kidnapping of Customs Deputy Comptroller, family

The police have foiled an attempt to kidnap a Deputy Comptroller of Customs, her younger brother, who is a lawyer and her son yesterday in Ajah.

The Area D Commander in Mushin, acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, assembled a decoy team which played along with the suspected kidnapper, Yomi Odudare, who has been calling Yisa Theophilus, the lawyer.

The police team ran a quick check on the caller based on available information and came to conclusion that he was up to something sinister.

The team found out that aside being a notorious criminal in the area, the caller, later discovered to be into land selling business (Omonile).

The Nation learnt that the detectives called him to meet with them for a land deal and he agreed.

A statement by the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), said: “Yesterday, (Sunday) being the day they agreed to meet, the detectives went along with Theophilus, whom he had been calling frequently. They met the suspect at a project site in Ajah, Lagos, called Fara-park and he was promptly arrested.

“During a brief interrogation at the scene of arrest, the suspect confessed that he has never met the lawyer nor any member of his family. He however said that the idea to kidnap Yisa, his sister and her son came from one Olugbenga Kehinde Ojo, a former Driver to the Deputy Comptroller’s uncle. He added that the idea was to kidnap the lawyer and force him to lure out his sister, who is a Deputy Comptroller of Customs.

“To make his story believable, he put a call to the said Ojo. He told him to meet up with him, that he had successfully kidnapped the lawyer. Ojo was happy and so he rushed to the venue, straight into the waiting arms of police detectives investigating the case. Both suspects took the police to a shanty, surrounded by water, situate in Eleko, on Lekki/Epe expressway, Lagos, where they prepared as a hostage ground for their would-be victims.”

Oti added that Odudare and Ojo had planned to kill any of the family members that saw Ojo in the process because they all knew him.

“It was the agreement of both suspects that in order to avoid the mistakes of the notorious kidnapper, Evans, the moment any of their potential victims sights Ojo, a former employee of the Deputy Comptroller’s uncle, that person must be killed because they all know him.

“The Commissioner of Police advised Lagosians to be wary of people who call them out for lucrative business deals as it might turn out to be a ploy to kidnap or harm them. CP Edgal assured that the command will remain proactive in the fight against crimes and criminality in the state,” Oti said.
