•Governor: Osun has lost committed officer

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the death of the Permanent Secretary at the Bureau of General Services in the Governor’s Office, Mrs Olufunke Oluwakemi Kolawole, is a big loss to the state’s civil service.

A statement by the Director of the Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, said the governor spoke during his condolence visit to the family of the slain permanent secretary.

Mrs Kolawole was reportedly killed last Thursday by suspected abductors on her way to Abuja.

Aregbesola noted that the death of Mrs Kolawole was not only shocking but left a huge vacuum in the state’s civil service.

The governor, who described the late permanent secretary as a great woman of virtues, added that she was loyal and dedicated.

He said the late Mrs Kolawole used her position to impact humanity.

According to him, death is a misery no one wants.

Aregbesola said: “It is a phenomenon that everyone hates. But because God has destined man to die, we all reconcile with death.

“It behoves on every mortal to always be conscious of the end-day and know that it is God that gives and takes at any time.

“Mrs Kolawole’s death is not only a rude shock to us as government but also a great misfortune at a time her quality services are needed most.

“Her sudden death is shocking, unfortunate and calamitous to the state and the civil service in particular. She was known to be a committed, dedicated and loyal civil servant who was never found wanting in her professional role to the people.

“She was a great woman. She was a committed being; a woman of courage and a loyal civil servant. She was diligent and upright to duty. This could be seen in her character of leaving office late, sometimes 12 a.m, sometimes 1 a.m. In fact, she worked round the clocks oftentimes.

“I knew the late Mrs Kolawole as a very hardworking woman who had never been derelict from duty.”

Commiserating with the family of the deceased, Aregbesola said: “I share your grieves, I share your pains and sorrows at the critical times.

“I also share the feelings of despondency in those that saw the deceased as a source of their livelihood. But one couldn’t but take solace in the enormity of the consequences of her sudden death.

“The news of her death was broken at a time the state was still nursing the transition of the wife of the former governor, Mrs Omowumi Akande…”

Health Minister, Prof Isaac Adewole, who joined the governor with other permanent secretaries and members of the State Executive Council (Exco), prayed for the family of the deceased.

Badoo kills three family members in Ikorodu

    •One injured, another missing

The notorious Badoo ritual gang struck again in Ikorodu, Lagos, killing three members of a family. The fourth member of the family, sources said, was seriously injured.

The gang attacked three other buildings on Aliyu Adesanya Street, Olopomeji Bus Stop, Odogunyan, Ikorodu.

The slain family members lived at house 9; occupants of houses 10, 11 and 12 were said to have fled when the gang struck around 3am.

Those killed were David Ikehi, his wife, Priscilla and son Moses. The family’s four-year-old boy Sunday is battling for his life in hospital. Its two-year-old son is reportedly missing.

The killers were said to have smashed their victims’ heads with grinding stone, splashing their blood all over the place.

It was gathered that a resident, Baba Chukwuemeka, who escaped, raised the alarm around 4am.

He was said to have told neighbours that an intruder entered his home through the window, carrying a grinding stone.

The man, residents said, claimed to have dodged being hit with the grinding stone and wrestled with his assailant. The assailant, the man claimed, fled when he could not overpower his victim, leaving the grinding stone behind.

It was gathered that Baba Chukwuemeka’s scream alerted others, who came out to secure their neighbourhood.

In the ensuing melee, it was gathered that a loud cry came from house 9, prompting the crowd to rush there.

Upon getting there, they found that it was the landlord who screamed, but the door to his apartment was fastened with a wire. They were said to have rallied round to rescue him and found the Ikehis while combing the house.

The residents contacted the Shagamu Road Police Division, which evacuated the bodies and took the injured to the hospital.

In anger they stormed the palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Adewale Shotobi, to protest the incessant killings.

Soldiers and the Department of State Services (DSS) operatives were deployed to assist the police control the crowd. The crowd pelted them with stones and other missiles

The residents took a swipe at the monarch, demanding his dethronement. They also demanded “thorough investigation” into the killings.

The Command spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said the incident was being investigated. He however, declined to comment on steps the command is taking to prevent future attacks.

  • Family of fire victim gets Airtel’s support

Eight months after a family lost its kids and house to an inferno at Magboro, in Ogun State, succour has come their way as a telecommunication firm Airtel Nigeria, donated a rebuilt two-bedroom apartment to the bereaved family.

At an event to hand over of the new house to the Aina family, residents thronged the compound thanking the communication outfit for the gesture.

Some of them who were overjoyed rolled on the floor thanking God for putting smiles back on the faces of the Ainas while other people sang and rejoiced.

But Mrs. Aina, who suffered severe burnt was speechless when people stormed the residence. However, it was a mixed feeling for Korede Aina-the only surviving child in the October 11, last year’s inferno when the family stepped into the new apartment.

“I wish my siblings were alive, but I am happy today because of Airtel’s gesture,” Korede said.

“And that is why we decided to step in to help this good family to rebuild their future. I must say the future of the Aina family is very bright and I encourage everyone to walk with them in getting the best out of the future,” Ogunsanya said.

  • The Ramadan Family

    Preamble

At no time in the life of man can the true nature of human existence be more manifest than in Ramadan. It is in this sacred month that Muslims reflect mostly on this. Some people fasted actively last year but are no more today. Some put their feet at the door step of Ramadan this year but never entered it. Some fell by the way side along the line.

    Human life

Human life cannot be measured in history by the time or manner of his or her death. In Islam, death is neither the consequence of sin nor the repercussion of ignorance. There are instances when the sinless dies and the sinful lives. There are also instances when the learned dies while the ignorant lives.  The schedule of life and death is not in the custody of any human being. Death is a debt which every living being owes and must pay.

Not even Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was spared of death or given a foreknowledge of its time.

    Spiritual value

Some people look but never see. Some claim to see or know in falsehood even when and where it is humanly impossible to see or know. The factors that determine the time, the place and the manner of death are known only to the the Almighty Allah, the omnipresent, the omnipotent.

It is only in the imagination of man that age should be a factor of death. We shall all die at our scheduled time. Therefore, whoever is privileged to pass through this year’s Ramadan successfully should endeavour to add spiritual value to his or her life and not diminish in faith after the sacred month. We shall all account for that value before Allah.

    Reassessment

After Ramadan, in a few weeks’ time, we shall start looking back, with nostalgia, not only the essence of Ramadan but also the good things we have done in the sacred month. For instance we shall remember that in no other month of Hijrah calendar is the role of Muslim women more pronounced than in Ramadan. Like in other months, they often exhibit the roles of wives, mothers as well as that of their husband’s confidants. But more than in other months, they also display their religious dedication in Ramadan.

    Women’s resilience

In that sacred month Muslim women fast like their men counterparts. They pray five times daily. They join those men counterparts in observing Tarawih. Some of them even attend Tafsir and public lectures. Yet they never relent in carrying out their daily official daily duties just like men either in the offices, shops, or farms. And all these are in addition to their permanent matrimonial duties.

Even as they assist their husbands financially in maintaining the homes, these women still take care of those husbands as well as the children and relatives domestically.

    Tireless in nature

At the time of the day when their husbands are knocked out by fatigue arising from fasting, these wives are still busy in the kitchen preparing Iftar for the household. And at the time in the night when some husbands are engaged in Tahajjud, or are snoring in bed, the wives are already up in the kitchen preparing the Sahur for the family.

Some of these women are carrying pregnancy. Some are suckling their children. Some of them are knowledgeable enough to do the Tilawah (recitation of the Qur’an) like their husbands.

    Their financial assistance

Some of them are rich enough to finance their matrimonial home fully or partially.

And, in all these activities, they never feel tired. Where and when they feel tired, they never show it. If any month has ever depicted the virtues of women, it is Ramadan and the women activities in it.

If for the reason of their activities in Ramadan alone, they deserve tenderness and dignified treatment in the hands of their husbands.

     How children thrive

Also after Ramadan, we shall recall the role of our children in the sacred month and then endeavour to ensure the continuity of those rewarding activities.

At that time, it will occur to us that children are Allah’ greatest gift to man. Their presence in a house is blessing. Their contribution is immense. At times,  they can act like teachers just as they can play students. They learn fast, they teach fast. They are a major security for parents in any given environment.

Children have both temporal and spiritual roles to play in a matrimonial life. And with such roles, they sometimes create hope for humanity and sometimes, they signal despair. They are the greatest asset in the possession of parents in time of peace.

    Children as weapons

They are also the greatest weapon for those parents against the forces of Satan.

Because of their innocence, children pave way for God’s forgiveness and quick acceptance of prayers. And, most importantly, children guarantee the continuity of man’s existence on earth through heritage. It is only with them that the fulfilment of today’s promise is possible tomorrow.

    The Qur’anic children

In the Qur’an, children are mentioned many times and most often with reverence. They are treated in that glorious book as a major issue in the life of man. As orphans, they do not only have a role to play, they also compel some adults to play a role relating to them.

As heirs to their parents, they have substantial shares in inheritance. Muslim children are like cubs. They follow the footstep of their parents or guardians a scrupulously. They are often with their parents during the five daily prayers. They watch their parents as the latter give charity to the poor. They accompany them to public lectures and Islamic social gatherings.

And, in Ramadan, children are part of the Muslims’ total spiritual package. They wake up with them at night. They fast with them in the day. They break the fast with them at sunset and observe Tarawih with them in the evenings. They join their parents at Tafsir and night lectures. They participate in Laylatul Qadr and in giving Zakatul Fitr to the poor.

    Encouragement

In all these activities, they are supposed to be spiritually nurtured and encouraged. At the tender age of seven, they should be guided to fast even if for half a day. And when they reach the age of 10 they should be strengthened in faith and in religious deeds. They should be provided with necessities of life both of the temporal and spiritual means. With these, they will grow up to become the fulfilment of their parents’ dreams.

    Good or bad

Most children grow up as good or bad by emulating their parents. A child is therefore what his parents make him. If advantage of Ramadan is not taken by Muslim parents to mould their children into good Muslims what other platform will be used? Your child is your sun. Make hey with it while it shines.

We shall also recall how we related to our neighbours especially the non-Muslims among them in that month.

    Like family, like neighbours

In Islam, neighbours are as important as the next of kin. And, Islam attaches so much respect to them. According to Bukhari and Muslim, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was reported to have once sworn by Allah three times saying: “he does not believe in Allah whoever creates fear in his neighbours atrociously”

In another Hadith also reported by Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet was quoted as saying that “Whoever believes in Allah and the last day let him be nice to his neighbours and respect his guests”

    New Toga

In the month of Ramadan a good Muslim is expected to wear a new toga of sobriety and repentance. He doubles his good deeds to his neighbours extending generosity to them and cultivating a new atmosphere of friendliness and trust with them. He genuinely gives them as much impression of love and brotherhood as he does with his consanguine relatives.

It does not matter whether the neighbours in question are Muslims or non-Muslims. Neither does it matter whether they are tribesmen or non-natives. The Prophet did not discriminate in his Hadith when he was admonishing on neighbours. And that is the inalienable position of Islam on neighbours.

Therefore, whoever might have quarrelled with his neighbours go and settle the quarrel No one knows which Ramadan will be his or her last.

    Purpose of Ramadan

Ramadan is not made a pillar of Islam by accident. Its purpose is to return man to the original state of purity into which he was born. That Allah entrusts the world to man is also not by accident. Allah consulted widely and far before entrusting this great responsibility to man having volunteered to bear it. This much is contained in Qur’an 33:71 thus: “We offered the trust (of the world) to the heavens; the earth and the mountains they all turned it down and were afraid of it. Man undertook to bear it but he has proved to be insincere and deceitful”.

    Reconfirmation

For man to re-examine himself, repent his misdeeds and be redeemed, therefore, Allah brought Ramadan as a means of rescue.

It is in the month of Ramadan that Muslims reconfirm NEEDS rather than WANTS as the necessities required for the sustenance of their lives.

    Needs and wants

Muslims, by their faith and orientation, are not, ordinarily, given to WANTS. They are more concerned about NEEDS than WANTS. The reason for this is not far-fetched. With NEEDS come contentment and satisfaction while WANTS are the cause of greed and avarice.

    Divine provision

Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, had divinely provided the needs of every living creature even before its creation. But then, He knew that of all those creatures man alone would go beyond NEEDS into the realm of WANTS. That was perhaps what informed the negative role which Satan assumed in the life of man shortly after the creation of Adam.

By introducing WANTS to man, what Satan did was to create a permanent job for himself in the life of man. Without WANTS the world would not have been what it is today. Blood would not have been shed. Money would not have been deified. Hatred would not have been known to man. And, man’s inhumanity to man would have been totally averted.

    Effects of wants

The effect of WANTS first became known when Qabil (Cain), the first son of Adam preferred his brother’s wife to his. In the argument which ensued, Qabil (Cain) killed his brother Habil (Abel) and combined the latter’s wife with his. Thus, greed and avarice became ingredients of man’s culture. And WANTS rather than NEEDS became the domineering factor in the life of man.

    Youths and Mosques

One delightful thing in the sacred month was to note that Nigerian Mosques were full of Muslim youths. By this, a silent Islamic renaissance seems to be going on especially in Nigerian society. It looks like a repeat of the situation that led to the formation of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) in 1954. With this development, two great possibilities are expected to sail Islam through the coast of good hope in the 21st century. One is the return of the Mosque to its original objective. The other is the inalienable continuation of Islamic dynamism in reshaping the destiny of mankind.

    Ultimate hope

The hope that these two possibilities are achievable in the hands of today’s teeming Muslim youths is in fulfilment of a fundamental prophesy about the signs of the last days. One of these signs is that ‘the sun will start rising from where it used to set’. The reference here is not to the physical sun. The Prophet was referring to the spiritual photosynthesis of the souls of mankind for the ultimate metamorphosis of those souls from mortality to immortality. The instrument of photosynthesis in this case is Islam. And, the fulfilment of this prophesy is gradually being confirmed today either by technology or science.

When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) established the very first Mosque in Madinah (Masjid Al-Qubah) in 622 A.C, the purpose was more than just Salat.

    Functions of Mosques

Ordinarily, the Mosque is not supposed to be just a house of worship. It should also be a school, a library, a hospital, a court, a media centre and a parliament. Without the Mosque, the unity of the Muslim Ummah would have been impossible.

A Mosque is the meeting place for offering Salat five times a day. It is the centre of congregation for Jum’at prayer every Friday. It brings the Muslims together twice in a year for congregational observance of Eidul-Fitr and Eidul-Adha. Yet, the meeting place called ‘Arafah which is the climax of Hajj and at which the largest human congreagation meets one a year is a Mosque.

The great Mosques in Makkah, Madinah, and Quds (Jerusalem) serve the same purpose as those in Cairo , Jakarta and Sydney . And, there is no difference between the Mosque in Sokoto and the one in Rio de Janeiro .

    Fortification

Generally, the Mosque plays a central role in fortifying the unity of the Muslims wherever they are. But unfortunately, with time and with crave for personal benefits, the Mosque has been relegated to just a place for Salat alone. That is the real cause of the backwardness in which the Muslim Ummah is now wallowing. With the experience of the sacred month of Ramadan, fasting Muslims have gained bounteously. Such gains must not be allowed to slip off their hands. An opportunity may not come twice.

  • Family’s ‘greed’ endangers Baby Michael’s health

Family’s ‘greed’ endangers Baby Michael’s health

The health and future wellbeing of rescued Baby Michael Alvez, who suffers from face ulcer, seem to be on hold. Project Alert and rescuers have decided to refund donations raised, following alleged money-consciousness on the part of his family. GBOYEGA ALAKA reports.

A thick shadow, penulti-mate week, fell on the future of four-year-old Baby Michael Alvez, who had been undergoing treatment for a diagnosed Facial Hemangioma at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Project Alert, and his rescuers, Kate Henshaw, Aramide Kasunmu and Temitope Oluwagbemi, who had been raising money and working hard towards the baby’s treatment and rehabilitation, have decided to refund the money, over nine million Naira, to the respective donors, following what they termed “problematic” attitude from his parents.

Over a year ago, March 16, last year to be precise, Henshaw, who incidentally is brand ambassador to Project Alert, and the two other ladies, came across a very sick boy with open, degenerating face sore, running in traffic and soliciting alms around the Lagos Museum Roundabout, Onikan.

Moved with pity, they got hold of him, located his mother, who had brought him to the location to solicit alms and offered to help.

Following Michael’s admission into LUTH, Henshaw, Kasunmu and Oluwagbemi footed his bills along with his mum, Mary’s upkeep, until his ailment was confirmed and it was decided that he would require a long period of treatment and huge financial intervention. Together with Project Alert, as a host organisation, they went public for donations.

Mary was initially billed to be a signatory to the account, along with Henshaw and Effah-Chukwuma (Executive Director, Project Alert), until she was dropped, following a discovery that she had once raised money from the public, raising about N700,000 through a television (TVC) campaign, without attempting any major treatment or leaving the streets.

The account was opened and people kept donating for the boy’s treatment. The donations came notably from friends of the rescuers, Henshaw, Kasunmu and Oluwagbemi. Kasunmu, through her online GoFundme account, raised N597, 000 within three weeks of Michael’s admission, which was used in funding the baby and his mum’s weekly bills, medical tests and medications.

In all, Kate Henshaw and her group of friends raised 50 per cent of the total money generated.

Everything worked well until the family started making trouble and the money, which Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, Executive Director, Project Alert said is in excess of N9 million, allegedly became a target for Baby Michael’s family.

According to Effah-Chukwuma, at a recent press conference, Project Alert and the rescuers have decided to refund all donations to the respective donors because Baby Michael’s family has frustrated their efforts.

“Their antagonism was not only limited to the rescuers and Project Alert, but also to the different government agencies responsible for care and protection of children such as Michael. Not only did his mother, Mary, abandon him in the wards; she was also maltreating him…and even beat up another woman in the ward, and threatened to burn down the ward when accosted by the matron,” a statement signed by Effah-Chukuma read.

As a result, she was banned from the hospital and the baby’s grandmother came to stay with him, while his aunt, Syndi Ezeanyeji assumed guardianship.

Effah-Chukwuma spoke of how Ezeanyeji, in November, last year, sent lawyers to them requesting information on the account and amount raised and how the family vehemently rejected efforts by the state government to place the baby under proper hygienic care, accusing the state and the rescuing team of conniving to take their child away from them.

Things reached a head in February this year, when, at a meeting of all parties convened by the Lagos Social Welfare Department, at the Secretariat, the family vehemently refused to give up their son, rejected further medical intervention and signed an affidavit with the welfare body to the effect. Aside that, Ezeanyeji got another law firm, Beacon Solicitors to write to Project Alert about the fund.

As a result, Project Alert and the rescuers wonder why the family is more interested in the money which was raised for the boy’s treatment than his health and have decided to reimburse the donors.

The donations will be refunded in the following order: 50 per cent to all donors who made donations of N20, 000 and above; and 100 per cent to those who donated N19, 999.

  • Ritual gang kills family of six in Ikorodu

A couple and their four daughters have been killed by members of the suspected ritual gang, Badoo at Imota, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Taofeek Agbaje, his wife, Simiatu and their daughters – Mardiya, 13, Rodiat, 10, Toyeebat, eight, and a-year-old Sadiat were hacked to death last Thursday.

It was gathered that the gang attacked the family at midnight.

The late Agbaje, Rodiat and Toyeebat were buried on Thursday. The trio of Simiatu, Mardiya and Sadiat died in the hospital. They were buried on Friday.

The incident occurred at Adeke Bus Stop in Adamo, Imota, one of the areas that have suffered attacks from the murderous gang since last year.

According to the source, the attackers entered the family’s three-bedroom bungalow apartment and hacked the victims.

The assailants were said to have torn the window nets, removed the burglary proof and crawled into the rooms where the victims laid.

It was gathered that after hitting their victims with a heavy object, they used a handkerchief to clean their blood before fleeing.

He said neighbours were unaware of the incident because of the deafening sound of an electricity generating set.

A neighbour, it was learnt, was the first to sight the victims around 6am, when she went to get lemon from the victims’ home.

He said: “The woman needed the lemon for her child who was having stomach-ache. She went to Iya Mardiya’s place to get it but she saw Mardiya crawling on the passage. Mardiya pointed into their room and when the woman got there, she saw others lying lifeless.”

Spokesman for the Lagos Command, Olarinde Famous-Cole said: “The Lagos state command operatives responded to a distress call from a resident and discovered that one Taofeek Agbaje and his family were attacked at night time by unknown persons. As a result, the man and his two daughters died, while his wife and two other daughters, sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital. The scene of the incident was visited. Investigations are in progress.”

  • A family affair

When Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail by a Federal High Court on April 25, the joy of his supporters understandably knew no bounds. Boundless excitement may lead to boundless overexcitement, further leading to boundless irrationality. This sequence was observable following the conditional release of the controversial leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an enthusiastic separatist group.

A report said: “Speaking with reporters at his palace at Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Kanu’s father, Eze Israel Kanu, flanked by his wife, Ugoeze Sally, called for the unconditional release of his son.” The traditional ruler of Afaraukwu Ineku Umuahia kingdom described his son as “a man who has done nothing to warrant being held in prison.” It would appear that father and son are on the same page concerning the separatist rebellion being championed by IPOB.

What about Kanu’s mother? From the look of things, she supports her husband and her son on this issue. So, it may be described as a family affair, which makes it even more interesting. This report captures the family backing Kanu enjoys concerning his separatist ambition: “The IPOB leader’s mother said she had been having sleepless nights while her son was in detention and thanked God for answering her prayers. Mrs. Kanu thanked all those who stood firm for the Biafra cause and prayed for her son’s release, urging them to keep the faith. Asked if she would advise her son to discontinue his agitation, she cried: “No retreat, no surrender. Biafra is a divine project.”

The report continued: “Kanu’s mother said the arrest of her son popularised the Biafra agitation and vowed to keep supporting the movement. “My son was raised by God to deliver Biafra and as God delivered Israel so he will deliver Biafra because my son is fighting for his right,” she said.”

With such parental endorsement, Kanu is likely to believe he is doing the right thing in the right way. But is he doing the right thing in the right way? The reality is that the way he and his group have pursued their aim is unlawful, which is why he was arrested for alleged treason and detained.
