Fani-Kayode decries false narratives on Sokoto bombings

A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned the claims in some quarters that the recent precision air strikes carried out by the United States military on insurgents in parts of Sokoto State were done without the knowledge of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or the Federal Government.

The ex-minister said the “false and mischievous” narrative was purposely put out by New York Times to belittle, demean, embarrass, and debase the Nigerian and the U.S. governments as well as their intelligence-gathering capabilities.

He described the narrative as puerile and childish.

Fani-Kayode said: “Anyone who honestly believes that the U.S. government based its intelligence to bomb parts of Sokoto State on the intel supplied by an Onitsha-based screwdriver seller who used Google map to source his information and not on the intel supplied by the Nigerian intelligence services must have a low self-esteem and a low intelligence quotient.

“I respectfully urge such a person to get a sense.

The false and mischievous narrative, which has been purposely put out by the New York Times to belittle, demean, embarrass and debase both the Nigerian and the U.S governments and their intelligence-gathering capabilities, is puerile and childish.

“No country will allow its country to be bombed in the name of fighting ISIS or anyone else on the words of an Onitsha utensils trader and neither would the Americans take such a precipitous and consequential course of action on the words of such an individual.

“The Nigerian Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has made it clear that the Americans took the action in collaboration with our Armed Forces and intelligence agencies, and that the intel they used to do so was given to them by our government.

“I spoke with him exactly 10 minutes after the bombing took place and he not only assured me of this but also provided me with details of the build-up to the event.

“The New York Times story can best be described as not only fake news but also nothing but a hefty load of disingenuous and infantile hogwash, and the paper is better washed down the toilet.”

Mistakes Tinubu’s detractors madeover Turkey misstep —Fani-Kayode

Ambassador-Designate and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned the decision of some Nigerians to rejoice over the misstep that caused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stumble during his official visit to Turkey.

In a two-page piece titled The Enemy Within (see Pages 9 & 10), the former Minister of Culture and Tourism described the celebration of the fleeting incident by some Nigerians as unfortunate, saying they forgot that anyone could slip or fall at any time.

He said it was lost on the President’s detractors, “most of whom are proxies of a handful of political leaders in the opposition” who seek to discredit the government and destabilise the country, that an elected president is a living manifestation of the nation.

He said: “It is to the glory of God and to the shame of our detractors and the enemy within that though our President slipped and fell in Turkey before the entire world, he rose again with strength and pride like the phoenix, and he went on to negotiate and sign numerous bilateral agreements, which will bring security, succor and prosperity to our nation with President Erdogan of Turkey.”

Describing them as the enemy within, he accused the political leaders in question of working in cahoots with foreign powers who are part of those that are secretly encouraging and possibly facilitating the abduction of Christians in Nigeria because they make political gains from it.

“They secretly crave it, yet openly condemn it because it suits their purpose, and it confirms the narrative that they want to establish.

“For some, it proves that Christians are being targeted in Nigeria, and it plays into the Christian genocide and persecution narrative which the Americans have gladly cottoned on to, and for others, it feeds the erroneous suggestion that having a Christian candidate for the opposition or a Christian running mate for our President in 2027 are the answers to the problem and the only way of proving that Christians are safe and treated with humanity in our country.

“Both views do not fully recognise the depth and complexity of the problem, and can therefore be fairly described as simplistic, myopic and misplaced, because the situation is much more complex than that.

What sets Fani-Kayode lineage apart in education, by public policy expert

Popular public policy expert and public affairs commentator Emmanuel Owabor has hailed the Fani-Kayode family as a leading light in education on the African continent.

Owabor, in a statement, argued that no other family in the history of Africa can boast five generations of graduates from Oxbridge-level universities.

Recalling the education achievements of the Fani-Kayode family over a period that spans more than two centuries, he said: “From 1893 when Rev. Emmanuel Adelabi Kayode (Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s great grandfather) graduated with honors with a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Durham University, to 1922 when Justice Victor Adedapo Kayode (Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s grandfather) graduated from Cambridge University with a Law degree, to 1943 when Chief Remi Fani-Kayode (Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s father) graduated from Cambridge University with a Law degree, to 1984 when Chief Femi Fani-Kayode himself graduated from Cambridge University with a Law degree, no family in Nigeria or indeed Africa and few in the world have had four generations of graduates from these elite institutions from such an early age.

“The fifth generation of Oxbridge-level graduates was led by Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s eldest daughter, Miss Folake Fani-Kayode, who graduated with a degree from Durham University in 2009, like her great, great grandfather, Rev. Emmanuel Adelabi Kayode had done 116 years earlier.

“Since then, numerous other children of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode have graduated from top British and western universities.

“This represents an extraordinary legacy of first class education from the best universities in the world for five uninterrupted generations.

“No other Nigerian or African family has achieved this, and very few even in the Western world.”

Fani-Kayode decries false narratives on Sokoto bombings

Former Minister of Aviation and ambassador-designate, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned the claims in some quarters that the recent precision air strikes carried out by the United States on insurgents in parts of Sokoto State was carried out by the U.S. without the knowledge of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or the Federal Government.

Fani-Kayode said the narrative was put out by the New York Times to belittle, demean, embarrass and debase the Nigerian and the U.S. governments and their intelligence-gathering capabilities, describing it as puerile and childish.

According to the paper, the airstrikes were based on intelligence provided by a civilian source rather than official Nigerian channels.

But Fani-Kayode argued that it was implausible for the U.S. government to rely on information from a private individual using online mapping tools to conduct a military operation.

He said such an action could only have been taken on the basis of intelligence supplied through formal collaboration between U.S. and Nigerian security agencies.

He described the newspaper’s account as misleading and damaging, accusing it of attempting to undermine the credibility of both the Nigerian and U.S. governments and their intelligence-gathering capabilities.

Fani-Kayode said Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, had clarified that the operation was carried out in coordination with Nigeria’s Armed Forces and intelligence services.

He added that he personally spoke with the minister shortly after the strike, during which Tuggar confirmed that the intelligence used for the operation was provided by the Nigerian government and outlined the events leading up to it.

Fani-Kayode rejected the report as inaccurate and unprofessional, reiterating that no nation would permit such a military action without intelligence cooperation.

He said: “Anyone that honestly believes that the U.S. government based its intelligence to bomb parts of Sokoto State on the intel supplied by an Onitsha-based screwdriver-seller who used Google map to source his information and not on the intel supplied by the Nigerian intelligence services must have a low self-esteem and a low intelligence quotient.

JUST IN: Senate confirms Fani-Kayode, Omokri, ex-INEC boss, 61 others as ambassadors

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of 64 nominees for appointment as Career and Non-Career Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, presented by its chairman, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger North).

In his presentation, Senator Bello said the committee screened the nominees and found them suitable for appointment, noting that their nominations complied with relevant provisions of the law and extant guidelines governing diplomatic postings.

According to the report, 34 of the nominees were confirmed as Career Ambassadors, while 30 others were cleared as Non-Career Ambassadors.

Among those confirmed as Career Ambassadors are Amb. Nwaobiala Ezenwa Chukwuemeka (Abia), Betso Maimunah Ibrahim (Adamawa), Monica Okwuchukwu Enebechi (Anambra), Amb. Mohammed Mahmud Lele (Bauchi), Amb. Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), Amb. Adams Jane Bassey (Cross River), Amb. Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed (Kwara) and Amb. Ramat Mohammed Omobolanle (Lagos).

Others include Amb. Adeyemi Adebayo Emmanuel (Ekiti), Amb. Okechukwu Kingsley Onaga (Enugu), Amb. Abdussalam Habu Zayyad (Kano), Amb. Shehu Ilu Barde (Katsina), Amb. Haidara Mohammed Idris (Kebbi), Amb. Bako Adamu Umar (Kogi), Amb. Shaga John Shamah (Nasarawa), Amb. Ibrahim Danlami (Niger), Reuben Abimbola Samuel (Ondo), Amb. Akande Wahab Adekola (Osun), Amb. Luther Ogbomode Ayo-Kalata (Rivers), Danladi Yakubu Nyaku (Taraba) and Bello Dogon-Daji Haliru (Sokoto).

The Senate also confirmed prominent political figures and technocrats as Non-Career Ambassadors. They include former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Ita S.J. Enang (Akwa Ibom); former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu; former INEC Chairman, Prof. Alhaji Mahmud Yakubu; former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (rtd); former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd); and former Ondo lawmaker, Senator Jimoh F. Ibrahim.

Also confirmed were Chief Olufemi Fani-Kayode, Prof. Isaac F. Adewole, Mr. Reno Omokri, Chief Olufemi Pedro, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Mrs. Ajimobi Fatima Florence, Senator Grace Bent, Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut, Dr. Yakubu N. Gambo, and several others drawn from across the six geopolitical zones.

Of the last batch of 65 Ambassadors-designate transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, only the nominee representing Yobe state, Adamu Garba Talba Nangree, has not been confirmed.

Nangree was not at the screening organised by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs last week.

Senator Bello had remarked that he was in communication with the nominee and that he would be screened in his office at a later date.

After the adoption of the report, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared the nominees confirmed, urging them to serve Nigeria diligently and project the country’s image positively in their respective postings.

    • Ndume, Oshiomhole in fireworks

There was drama yesterday at the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Room during the screening of Ambassadorial nominees.

A confrontation between  Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume and Adams Oshiomhole over a procedure tensed up the usually calm atmosphere as former ministers, former governors, ex-lawmakers and top technocrats filed in for screening.

At  the end, the Committee cleared all nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; ex-Interior Minister, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd.); former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu; former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; former presidential aide Reno Omokri; Senator Ita Enang; Senator Grace Bent; and others.

But it was Omokri’s turn that brought the session to a boiling point.

The committee had been attending to nominees in batches of five. When Omokri walked in with four career diplomats and after due introductions, Ndume immediately moved a motion and urged the panel to let all five nominees, including Omokri, ‘take a bow and go.’

The motion had barely landed when other senators, including Adams Oshiomhole, Ned Nwoko, Abdul Ningi and Mohammed Onawo, signalled their desire to speak.

Committee Chairman Senator Abubakar Sani Bello recognised Oshiomhole, prompting Ndume to insist that his motion must first be seconded before any comment.

What followed was a heated verbal exchange that froze the screening for nearly 20 minutes.

Ndume insisted procedure must be followed.

Oshiomhole insisted recognition by the chairman superseded everything.

    At one point, Oshiomhole declared:

“I cannot be intimidated by people who go here and there.”

    Ndume fired back:

“There is a motion on ground. It must be seconded or it dies.”

    Oshiomhole retorted:

“Then let it die. Allow me to speak.”

The room grew noisy as senators argued over parliamentary procedure. The Chairman repeatedly appealed for calm.

When order was restored, Oshiomhole used his floor time to defend Omokri. He described him as a ‘pragmatist’ who had shown the capacity to rise above old political hostilities.

He said Omokri’s recent actions proved he could “work in the national interest” and deserved support.

He also praised President Tinubu for appointing nominees who had previously criticised him, saying it showed “large-hearted leadership.”

The Chairman eventually cut him short:

“Senator Adams, you’ve made your point very clear.”

Senator Onowakpo then seconded Ndume’s motion, clearing the path for the batch to take a bow.

Ningi used his intervention to push for a nominee from his state and emphasised that ‘taking a bow’ was not equivalent to full Senate confirmation.

Onawakpo supported allowing the diplomats and Omokri to bow and go, arguing that the committee had already established precedent.

Despite the fireworks, the Committee cleared all nominees who appeared. Others cleared are: Jerry Manwe, Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, Erelu Angela Adebayo, Mrs  Florence Ajimobi, Olufemi Pedro, Ibas Ibok-Ete, Prof. Isaac Adewole, among others.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that many nominees were allowed to bow and go because they had served in the National Assembly or held senior public offices.

Following full clearance for all nominees by the committee except Adamu Garba Talba Nangree, who was absent, the Senate may likely confirm the nominees next week.

    • PDP, ADC gang up, urge Yakubu, Senate to reject nomination

The Oore of Otun-Ekiti and paramount ruler of Moba land, Ekiti State, Oba Adekunle Adeagbo, has congratulated a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, on his nomination as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Fani-Kayode is a holder of the traditional title of Aare Ajagunla of Moba land, Otun Ekiti.

In a statement yesterday, Oba Adeagbo said: “We are delighted by this honour done to one of our sons, the Aare Ajagunla of Mobaland, Otun Ekiti, by the Federal Government.

“We are proud of you. Well done. More glory and more grace.

Additionally, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to reject his nomination as an ambassador.

The opposition platform also urged the Senate to drop the former INEC chairman from the list, arguing that doing so is necessary to protect the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

The party said Yakubu’s nomination, coming barely two years after he oversaw the 2023 general election that brought President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to office, risks deepening public distrust in INEC and reinforcing perceptions that the former chairman may not have acted as a neutral umpire.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the country is still grappling with a major confidence deficit in INEC following the contentious 2023 polls.

It warned that elevating the former electoral chief to a high-profile diplomatic role so soon after leaving office sends “an insensitive and troubling signal” at a time when the independence of democratic institutions should be strengthened, not weakened.

The party argued that even though the law does not prescribe a cooling-off period for former electoral officials, ethical standards require restraint, especially when such appointments could blur the line between political actors and electoral umpires.

It cautioned that allowing the nomination to stand may encourage future INEC leaders to view their positions as pathways to political reward, a development it said would be damaging to election neutrality.

The ADC maintained that Yakubu should decline the offer in the interest of institutional integrity, adding that if he does not, the Senate should reject the nomination to safeguard public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.

The PDP requested that President Tinubu withdraw the list of ambassadorial nominees sent to the National Assembly for clearance.

The main opposition said the list contains the names of some discredited persons.

A statement in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, reads: “The Peoples Democratic Party strongly condemns the list of ambassadorial nominees as submitted by President Bola Tinubu. This list contains the names of many people (disgraced propagandists, characterless politicians, and public officials) who are widely perceived negatively by Nigerians and the global community, for their integrity deficit and notable anti-democratic activities.

“This development is not just a sad commentary on our country’s history of diplomatic representation; it is very reprehensible and scandalous. While most Nigerians are seriously appalled by the inclusion of most of the nominees, they are not totally surprised, given the history and disposition of this administration.

“Furthermore, it is an incontestable fact that a nominee is a clear and direct reflection of the values and estimation of the nominator. By making these nominations, the President has shown Nigerians that these are the best people he has to represent our country in the countries where they will be posted.

“That it took the President almost three years to produce this list speaks to the paucity of excellent people within his reach.

“Specifically, we convey the disappointment of many right-thinking Nigerians on the nomination of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate-past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), whose administration of our electoral umpire was characterised by countless double-speaks, flip-flops, and undelivered promises, which ultimately resulted in the birth of this administration, which is struggling in all areas of governance.

“To offer him an ambassadorial appointment at a time like this is an excellent exemplar of a skewed reward system, which we suspect is designed as an incentive to the new INEC Chairman, to also deliver flawed elections in 2027, in expectation of future rewards. This is absolutely scandalous and completely unacceptable.

“May we remind the President and all Nigerians that the respect a country gets from other countries cannot be separated from the integrity profile and public perception of both the President and the Ambassadors. So, appointing and sending ambassadors with tainted political profiles is not only a great disservice to Nigeria, but a setup for a diplomatic all-time low.

“To this end, we demand that President Bola Tinubu withdraw the said list and renominate only those with stellar democratic credentials and high moral standing, capable of commanding global respect for the ambassadorial assignments.”

Also, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Florence Ajimobi on her nomination for an ambassadorial role by President Tinubu.

In a statement at the weekend, the minister described the nomination as a “well-deserved honour and a testament to Mrs. Ajimobi’s exemplary character and dedication to service”.

The statement reads: “This nomination is a brilliant choice for our nation’s diplomatic corps. Mrs. Ajimobi is a woman of impeccable grace, sharp intellect, and a proven track record of leadership.

“Her lifelong commitment to philanthropy, women empowerment, and social development has prepared her aptly for the demanding role of representing Nigeria on the world stage.”

Adelabu thanked the President for the nomination, saying it is also a testament to “our nation’s commitment to leveraging its best and brightest minds for diplomatic service”.

Terrorism: Nigeria must accept U.S.’ support with caution – Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has sounded a note of caution in respect of the ongoing rapprochement between the United States of America and Nigeria over the ongoing security crisis in the latter.

In a two-page article titled The Word of the King of Mar-a-Lago (see pages 9 & 10), Fani-Kayode warns that as Nigeria attempts to cozy up to America in spite of recent threats and insults by President Donald trump, “we must guard our hearts jealously or trust them at our own peril”.

He warned that men of violence are incapable of honouring agreements or reciprocating friendship, and when they do cannot sustain it.

The ex-minister noted an attempt by the US to demonise Nigeria the way they did Sudan and Congo DRC before unleashing on them the RSF and M23 militias respectively.

He wondered why a man who claims he wants to deliver and protect Christians warmly welcomed into the White House the newly installed President of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, who he described as the greatest butcher of Christians on earth.

“Apparently, he loves the Christians of Nigeria but hates the Christians of Syria. He also hates the Christians of Gaza and the Palestinian West Bank, who have suffered immensely at the hands of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Zionist State of Israel.

“What an interesting paradox and contradiction this is. Only a village idiot will be fooled by it,” he said.

He argued that Trump’s motivation for expressing concern about the plight of Christians at the hands of terrorists in Nigeria is gain and not love.

He said: “The script is clear: stoke, provoke and fund chaos. Discredit and weaken the sitting government, incite the people, engender regime change and spark off a civil war, which will enable you to pick up the spoils and plunder the nation dry.

“Their evil eye is on Nigeria. They say we have done nothing to stop the killings, but they won’t tell you what they have done to stop supporting, enhancing and encouraging it for the last 15 years.

“They won’t tell you why they do not sell the arms we need to fight the war or share the necessary intelligence with us.”

Fani-Kayode to Tinubu: Bow to God, not Trump

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to seek an audience with American President Donald Trump over the latter’s threat to invade Nigeria.

In a speech he delivered as a guest speaker at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Akure, Ondo State on Tuesday, Chief Fani-Kayode said President Tinubu risks being embarrassed by Trump if he attempts a meeting with him.

His advice, he said, was based on speculations and media reports that Tinubu seeks to meet with the American President at the White House in Washington DC.

Describing Trump as “irrational, unpredictable and unbalanced”, the ex-minister said the American president might have been afflicted by what he called “Demastic anointing”.

He said: “Trump is driven by a pathological hatred for Africans, black and brown people, and Muslims. He is also driven by an overwhelming, compulsive, all-consuming and inexplicable greed and avarice for material things.

“He has been afflicted with what those of us in the Pentecostal circles describe as a Demastic anointing, named after Apostle Paul’s loyal disciple called Demas, who lost his way and fell in love with worldly things.”

This, he said, has resulted in Trump’s “obsession with and addiction to the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, the lust for power, the lust for treasure, the lust for treasure, the lust for land and the pride of life.
