Farioli leaves Ajax after end-of-season title collapse

Head coach Francesco Farioli has left Ajax in the wake of an end-of-season collapse that cost them the Eredivisie title.

Ajax were top of the Dutch top flight with a nine-point lead with seven games to go but on Sunday ended up finishing a point behind champions PSV Eindhoven.

Italian Farioli, 36, leaves after one season, having joined the club on a three-year contract last summer.

“The management and I have the same goals for the future of Ajax, but we have different visions and timeframes about the way we should work and operate to achieve those goals,” he said.

“Given these differences in the principles and foundations of the project, I feel deep in my heart that this is the best moment to part ways.”

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes said, despite missing out on the title, the club had achieved its aim of qualifying for the Champions League under Farioli and found his departure “incredibly disappointing”.

“Francesco also played a key role in enhancing the high-performance culture at Ajax, for which we are extremely grateful,” said Kroes.

“This summer was already set to be a challenging transfer window, and it has now become even more so. It is up to us to ensure that a strong new coaching team is in place when pre-season preparations begin on 26 June.”

Farioli stresses Moffi ‘s importance to Nice

OGC Nice head coach, Francesco Farioli has expressed his confident in Terem Moffi to become an invaluable member of his team despite the  inability of the Super  Eagles forward to score yet in the ongoing French Ligue 1 season.

Moffi scored 18 goals from 34 games across two clubs last season but he has only provided an assist from three games this term as Nice continue to go in the hunt for their first win of the season.

Farioli who spoke shortly after Nice’s goalless draw at home against Lyon said he is pleased with Moffi’s work ethics and style of which he believes would better suit the club at the long run.

Though he believes his attackers need to do more and improve on their goals conversion fails to blame Moffi whom he praised for working hard for the club both on and off the ball on the pitch.

“I agree with you: his main characteristic is his runs in behind the defence. But as I said last week, he’s learning a lot from his teammates, learning to link up with the midfielders,” Farioli told journalists.

“I think this style of play can make him even more valuable because he will have the opportunity to drop back and then attack the open space in a ‘false transition’ situation. We just need to be neater in the two phases that take us towards the final pass.

“Terem has all the perfect characteristics to play with us: he is always giving an option and he has a great sense of hard work. I’m very happy that he’s our striker.”

Nice remain unbeaten after three games with three draws against Lille (home), Lorient (away) and Lyon (home) for three points after three games.

They will face Strasbourg at home on Sunday in one of the Matchweek Four of the French Ligue 1 season
