Eagles’ current form not impressive – Fashanu

Veteran footballer, John Fashanu, on Saturday described the current form of the Super Eagles as unimpressive.

Fashanu spoke to sports writers at the inauguration of the first ever Sports University in Idumuje-Ugboko, Aniocha North local government Area of Delta.

The ex- English international said Sunday Oliseh still has the challenge of turning the team around to make it a team to beat.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Fashanu urged Nigerians to be patient with the team.

He appealed to Nigeria’s football administrators to remain focused and give the needed direction to achieve the desired result.

“Super Eagles has not impressed me at all lately. I will not say the appointment of Oliseh was bad. It is a challenge because he has not had that position before.

“But we have to step up because the country now is moving backwards in  FIFA rankings.

“We are at the lowest end, it has never been like that. That means somebody at the top must do something,’’ Fashanu said.

Oliseh/Enyeama Face-off: Sanusi, Fashanu call for caution

NFF General Secretary Sanusi Mohammed has called on Nigerians to be patient with the football body as they try to find a way out of the impasse involving Super Eagles Head Coach Sunday Oliseh and former Captain Vincent Enyeama. Also former International John Fashanu has advised both parties to embrace the part of peace.

Speaking to SportingLife at different occasions in Abuja, the scribe of the Federation said: “We all heard what had happened between the two important figures in our senior national team, we are appealing to Nigerians not to jump to any conclusion on the incident as the football house is very much on top of the situation, and would surely find a way out of the situation. Our appeal to all Nigerians is that they should not jump to conclusions, and start apportioning blames. This would not be good for us as a country, and our football. The Federation would surely find a way out of it, in such a way that none of the parties would be offended. What we need in our football now is absolute peace. We don’t want anything that would cause any kind of distraction as we move towards playing our last matches to qualifying for the Africa Nations Cup holding in Angola. We want to remain focused and resolute. This can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility,” he said.

Toiling the stand, former International and Wimbledon of England striker John Fashanu advised both Sunday Oliseh and Vincent Enyeama to tow the path of peace for the interest of the country. Quoting his words, the former England international popularly called “Fash the Bash” said: “We don’t need all these now. Sunday Oliseh should know that the task of qualifying the country for the next edition of Africa Nations Cup rests on his shoulder. He does not need any type of distraction at this point. He needs absolute peace and tranquility in the discharge of his duties. If he is rebuilding the team, it should be a gradual process, because he needs the experience of the older players to move the young ones along. He should have been very diplomatic in handling the incident, so that it would not have degenerated to the situation it is now. I still maintain that he needs to be peaceful with everyone, to achieve whatever he is out to do. Nigerians would not accept anything that would make them not go for the second AFCON consecutively” he said.

Continuing, he said: “Vincent Enyeama also should know that after serving the country for over a decade, if he is retiring from international duties, he should quit honourably without any rancour. He is now a legend, well respected across the world, he should always apply caution in all his actions, So many young players are looking up to him as a model, so he should not disappoint them in his actions,” he said.

  • Fashanu: Iwobi not ripe for Eagles

Former England International John Fashanu’s opinion is that Super Eagles latest invitee Alex Iwobi, is not yet good enough to be called up to the  senior national team.

The 19-year-old Arsenal teen is yet to make his competitive debut for Arsenal at senior level but, has been one of their consistent performers at youth level where he presently captains the team.

Last Friday, the youngster was on target for the Arsenal Under-21 in their 3-2 victory away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, a sign of his fine form but Fashanu still believes the Eagles call up is a bit early for the lad.

“Good player with lots of potential but he is not ripe for the Super Eagles, that is just so clear and his call up is not fair to other youth players of his age bracket,” he told News24.

Fashanu, however, said he believes the handlers of the national team  might have seen enough of Iwobi, for them to have called him up but he believes he is best suited to the youth teams of Nigeria.

“He is one for the youth teams not for the senior team at least for now, until he gets regular game time at competitive level that is my opinion”.

    Support Buhari, Fashanu urges stakeholders

Former Wimbledon FC of England striker, John Fashanu has charged Nigeria sports men and women to give their maximum support to the in-coming Nigerian president, General Mohammadu Buhari just as they did to the out-going president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Fashanu, who was a strong supporter of President Jonathan, said he does not regret supporting him stressing that as a sport person he was particularly pleased with the support Jonathan gave to sports which made Nigeria excel at the several international competitions.

“The fact is that I am a sports person and I am always interested in any person who shows so much interest to sports and President Jonathan did that which led to the numerous achievements we achieved under his tenure. This was the reason I supported him with everything I had,” he said.

Ambassador Fashanu maintained that it was against this backdrop that he was calling on Nigerian sports men and women to support the newly elected president noting that it is through this that they will get the him to pay more attention to them.

“I want to congratulate General Buhari for emerging winner of the presidential election and I want to use this opportunity to advise him to be a good sports man. I want to also advise him that the best way to get to the heart of the youth of Nigerians is to invest greatly in sports and by so doing he would have succeeded in touching the lives of millions of Nigerians.

“Some of us may not have supported him but I want to believe that he understands the reason we did that, and I want to assure him that we would also accord him the same support when we are needed,” Fashanu stressed.

The former board member of the Nigeria football Federation expressed confidence that Nigerian sports will continue to strive under the new government saying that with the caliber of people in the now ruling party they would not want to lower the standard set by their predecessor.

    Fashanu faults Keshi’s tactics

John Fashanu has fingered coach of the Super Eagles Stephen Keshi’s tactics as the reason why Nigeria lost to Congo at

The Ex England International of Nigeria parentage said Keshi’s tactics from the start cost the Eagles dearly in the game.

“Stephen Keshi is one coach I admire a lot, but his tactics in the first half, and the players he selected cost Nigeria the game, ” he told SL10.ng.

“I understand the idea of resting players because of the South Africa game, but leaving your best striker (Emenike) out, and starting with a player (Nwofor), who strikes no fear into the minds of the opposition, was a gamble that backfired.”

The former Wimbledon captain said for the Eagles to be at the Nations Cup next year in Morocco, Keshi needs to work on the defence line, which was shaky.

“It’s not looking good at the moment, but from what we saw in the second half, the Super Eagles are a good side in attack, but defensively there are so many issues.

“All the goals Congo scored were avoidable with some simple basics, but they weren’t there, if we are to be at the Nations Cup next year then a whole lot of work needs to be done on the defence.”

Speaking on Wednesday’s game against South Africa, Fashanu said the game plan should be about not conceding first before anything else.

“They should focus more on not conceding early because if they concede, the hangover of the defeat to Congo will demoralise them further.

“We have a good record against South Africa, but we must approach them with respect more than ever as they are on a high, winning 3-0 away, a new coach, a new mentality, they will be aiming to re-write history.”
