  • Heineken to inspire global style with fashion week

    Heineken has been announced as headline sponsor for the 2018 edition of the Lagos Fashion Week. The announcement was made at a press cocktail held in Lagos, on October 11, 2018.

    According to Senior Brand Manager, Heineken, Obabiyi Fagade, Heineken is the most international premium beer in the world, with presence in 192 countries.

    He said this internationality is reflected in all the company does, from sponsoring the most prestigious club football competition in the world – The UEFA Champions League, to Formula 1, music, rugby and of course here in Nigeria, fashion.

    Fagade, who represented the Marketing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Emmanuel Oriakhi, at the cocktail ahead of this year’s Heineken Lagos Fashion Week, said for three years now, Heineken has thrown its weight behind the Lagos Fashion Week as title sponsor.

    “This is because as  a brand, Heineken is keenly interested in the development of the Nigerian fashion industry – first because the brand embraces and celebrates the world’s diversity and second because the fashion industry is a typical example of an industry that constantly innovates in order to rise to the changing consumer demands,” he explained.

    According to Obabiyi, following this year’s theme of ‘AFRICA: Shaping Fashion’s Future’, Heineken hopes to inspire African fashion excellence by supporting a new generation of trendsetters and give the needed spotlight to the key players shaping the future of the industry.

    He said the 4-day fashion week was a platform that drives the Nigerian fashion industry by bringing together makers, buyers and the media to view and experience the best collection from designers in the fashion capital of Africa — Lagos, Nigeria.

    As part of this year’s Lagos Fashion Week activities, Heineken is providing unique entertainment experiences for attendees, including remarkable performances by a classical pianist, a ballerina and more to entertain guests.

     

     

    The Heineken Lagos Fashion Week, regarded as the most prestigious fashion event in this part of the world, was founded by Style House Files. The platform provides initiatives that support, strengthen and develop the fashion industry.

    The event features runway shows, fashion business series, fashion focus talks, and the highlight of the week; Heineken Live Your Music (HLYM) after party.

     

     

  • 19-year-old Nigerian makes youngest designer at New York Fashion week

    Taofeek Abijako, a 19-year-old Nigerian designer, has become the youngest ever designer to present a full collection at the New York Fashion Week.

    Abijako made history at the 2018 international fashion runway event tagged ‘New York Fashion Week: Men’s this year’, which ran a few days ago.

    According to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), his label “pays homage to his past by celebrating his West African culture through a contemporary perspective.

    He described his collection ‘Genesis’ as a ‘minimalist street wear approach with social and political commentary.’

    In Abijako’s words, the CFDA wrote, “My dad was a trained fashion designer while living in Nigeria and dealt mostly with local traditional garments.

    “Growing up in an environment like that sparked my curiosity in design,” he said.

    When asked about his inspiration for his collection, he stated that it will portray “the vibrancy of West African youth culture in the ‘70s and Fela Kuti.

    “The new collection is guaranteed to be groundbreaking in design and social impact,” he said.

    Abijako who started working from his bedroom, started the brand just two years ago with the intent to generate impactful statements through his work.

    His previous collections entitled, “Cruel Hands” and “Hooligans,” consisted of apparel with these thought-provoking statements: “Disorder: In Mutiny We Trust” and “Palaver Child.

    Etihad Airways partners Indian designer Manish Arora at Lakme Fashion Week

    Etihad Airways and Lakmé Fashion Week have announced a collaboration with Paris-based Manish Arora, who returns to the prestigious Mumbai fashion event after more than five years.

    The celebrated Indian couturier marks the 10th anniversary of his colourful Paris collection by presenting ‘CosmicLove’ at the Lakmé Fashion Week Winter Festive 2017 on August 19. His show, ‘Etihad Airways Presents Manish Arora,’ will take the star-studded audience of Bollywood celebrities, lifestyle media and fashion lovers on a visual journey that spans the tribes of Africa and the outer reaches of the universe.

    Etihad Airways flew Manish Arora on its recently-launched Airbus A380 Paris – Abu Dhabi service and onwards to India, capturing his journey on film from the French capital to Delhi, during which he speaks candidly about his inspiration from the varied cultures and environment.

    “The line I am bringing to Mumbai is inspired by the tribes of Africa and outer reaches of the cosmos,” Arora said.

    “Having spent 10 years of my working life in Paris after launching my career in Delhi, I have drawn much inspiration from my travels to the work I create. It’s wonderful to be associated with Etihad Airways, an airline I have admired and travelled with for so many years.”

    The collaboration with Manish Arora is the latest initiative by the Abu Dhabi-based carrier to demonstrate its position as the fashion industry’s preferred airline. This will be the airline’s third presence at Lakmé Fashion Week over the past 12 months, further elevating its premium brand presence alongside the world’s most revered luxury names.

    Last year, Etihad Airways struck a global agreement with WME/IMG to become a long-term partner of the fashion community.

    Patrick Pierce, Etihad Airways Vice President Marketing Partnerships, said: “Working with esteemed designers such as Manish Arora strengthens Etihad Airways’ commitment to the fashion industry, where we are fast becoming the airline of choice.     Mumbai is the latest stop in Etihad Airways’ global fashion calendar, supporting 17 men’s and women’s fashion events worldwide every year, with shows in London, Milan and New York following next month.

  • Africa Fashion Week Nigeria hosts first catwalk show

    AFRICA Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN) in partnership with Lagos Stage Government has announced, for the first time ever in the history of Fashion Week in Nigeria, pre-events for the AFWN tagged The Iconic Catwalk Shows.

    The exclusive events hold on Saturday at the National Theatre on April 1 and at Tinubu Square on April 2.

    The Iconic catwalk pre-event for the AFWN fashion week, according to the organisers, will spotlight talented designers expressing how traditional culture brings modern spirit to fashion.

    “The events are an opportunity to showcase to the world a glimpse of our rich heritage and culture. Clothing and accessories are inseparable from culture and what better way to express this than through the iconic location events.”

    Ms. Ronke Ademiluyi, Founder of the Africa Fashion Week London/Nigeria has expressed delight to be partnering with Lagos State Government to use some of the historical locations for the show.

    Africa Fashion Week, which is based in London and Nigeria, is designed to create an enabling platform across the globe where creative African designers and fashion entrepreneurs can showcase the beauty and creativity of Africa through their designs and costumes.

    All set for African Kids and Teens Fashion Week

    The, African Kids and Teens Fashion Week, an event created to showcase the best of African fashion for kids and teenagers, will, for three days, hold in the city of Lagos.

    Set to take place from December 9 to 11, the event opens with a fashion summit at Ibis Hotel Ikeja, Lagos.

    According to the organisers, the event will also feature a fashion show proper, an exhibition for designers and companies with products that centre on kids and teenagers alongside the fashion show.

    Speaking on the upcoming event, Ajibola Akande, founder and Executive Director of African Kids and Teens Fashion Week, said that the show will see designers in the kids and teens fashion industry come showcase their outfits.

    “Apart from wonderful African designs that will be on display on the runway, brands will be able to meet with customers directly to market and sell products at the exhibition stand. Celebrity guests from entertainment circles will also be part of this year’s fashion week,” Akande said.

    He also revealed that the show believes in teaching children the beauty and value of our heritage while preparing them to be confident individuals wherever they go in the world.

    “Therefore, African kids and teens fashion week is an event created to showcase an intrinsic part of culture both parent and kids need to be more familiar with, which is fashion.  Two things that have remained the central theme of our work are cultural value building and providing the public direct access to the local fashion scene. Locals and visitors alike are extended an invitation to be a part of our fashion community during this 3-day celebration of style,” he added.

    The African Kids and Teen Fashion Week is supported by the Bank of Industry and Peak Milk.

    All set for Port Harcourt Fashion week

    THE Rivers State government has announced plans to host the second edition of Port Harcourt International Fashion Week -Native & Vogue from September 19 to 21.

     At a recent media briefing, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, said: “Fashion continues to remain an avenue through which people not only express themselves, but also become successful entrepreneurs and employers of labour.”

    “The essence of Native & Vogue is to direct the minds of our young people to the vast potentials available in the fashion industry. We want to open doors of opportunity for our younger ones. It is also a better way to brand the state by associating with beauty, which is why Rivers State government is supporting Native & Vogue.”

     Simentari, who disclosed that some international models would be coming from South Africa and other parts of the world for the event, further said: “We are expecting about 80 models to work with designers from South Africa, UK and other countries. Models will also come from South Africa. Our own ace designer, Frank Oshodi, will be here to coordinate everything.”

    Giving details on what to expect from the event, Nkiru Oguadinma, Managing Director of Neo Mantra, partners of the Rivers State government on the project, said: “We are also expecting about eight designers from outside the country. Designers like Mudi Africa, Ade Adebayo from UK and Yomi Kosiba will be here.”
