  • Essentials of an Effective fasting

    Essentials of an Effective fasting

Text: “….. If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove… this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matt. 17:20-21)

One of the maladies of the Christian faith is with regards to fasting, which is now being pervasively bandied in the body of Christ, as a mantra for resolution of problems or challenges. It is nowadays very common for certain people in the body of Christ to be hasty to recommend fasting to anyone with an untoward issue of life. It has also been observed that the spiritual ego of some church members is highly lifted when days of fasting are declared to by their leaders to either climax an outgoing year or to herald the birth of a new year. There is obviously no gainsaying the fact that fasting has the endorsement of our Lord Jesus Christ because of its capacity to activate miraculous happenstances and also it’s power to enhance the spiritual growth of believers (Matthew 4:1-17). It is however important to note that the effectiveness of fasting is hinged on the compliance of believers with divinely set order (Matthew 6:16-18). Any fasting carried carried with disregard to biblical dictates is a mere hunger strike and unacceptable by God. Isaiah 58:3-5 says that, “Why have you fasted, and you have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed? “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you oppress all your workers. You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot do as you do today and have your voice be heard on high. Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this fast and a day acceptable to the Lord?”

The pervasive lethargy across the length and breadth of the body of Christ to critically study the Holy Scriptures has led to a gradual erosion of truth. It is this omission that has made believers have their residency with ignorance and falsehood. Paul told Timothy that, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth“ (2 Timothy 2:15). Please be informed that to receive anything from God, full obedience to His order or command is very key (Deut.. 28:1-13 cf 1Sam. 15:1-23). If you want to enjoy marriage as an example, submission to your husband in everything and to love your wife with all you are endowed with are non-negotiable (Ephesians 5:22-28). And, if you want to live long and be prosperous as a child, you must honour your parents (Ephesians 6:2-3) – any deviation from those set patterns is an invitation to crisis!

It is an axiom of our faith that any deviation from God’s set order or demand, which is a prelude to the fulfilment of His pledge, weakens the potency of His promises, because He is a God of order and the Lord of set patterns. It therefore behoves anyone who desires to enjoy the full value of God’s promises to follow very strictly His commandments because His promises are not free – they are predicated on fulfilment of certain terms and obligations. To eat the good of the land for instance is not free; it is grounded on firstly your willingness and then your obedience to His command – any action to the contrary is an invitation to destruction. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. (Isaiah 1:19,20).

From the passage where we picked our text, a man brought a report to Jesus Christ concerning his son who was a lunatic and would usually fall into fire and water. The man brought his son to His disciples to heal him but all their efforts were in vain. With a word from Jesus Christ, He rebuked the demon and the son was healed instantly. The disciples now asked Jesus Christ why they were unable to heal the boy. Jesus told them, “Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. However, this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting” (Matt. 17:20-21).

For your fasting to have an effect on any mountain, and not serve as a sheer religious affair or a merely hunger-strike, for it not be for weight reduction or serve as a means of detoxification, it is imperative to first accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you must ensure that you don’t have sin in your life and you must have also genuinely forgiven all that have erred against you (Is. 1:15-18, 59: 1-3; Matt. 6:12-14). In addition to that, an effective fasting must be complimented with regular prayers, and the prayers must be said in absolute faith in His name and acknowledgment that He has the power to save and deliver, for “..without faith, it is impossible to please Him” (Heb. 11:6). It is after you have done all those that you can be assured of an unhindered access to His throne of grace and mercy, and whatever human, official, spiritual, economic or matrimonial mountain positioned before you shall be lifted up and your life shall advance in the name of Jesus Christ.

Prayers: Oh Lord, help me during this time of lent to do your will, and do not allow me to fast in vain, in Jesus’ name.

  • ‘Respect fasting, Muslims, don’t eat in public during fasting hours’

‘Respect fasting, Muslims, don’t eat in public during fasting hours’

The Chief Imam, Falomo Lagos Central Mosque, Dr Tajudeen Adebayo, said the public should respect the sensibility of the fasting Muslim faithful by avoiding eating in their presence.

Adebayo said that eating in the public during the hours of fasting, debased the sensibility of those fasting and could discourage people from the self-denial ritual.

The cleric spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday, against the backdrop of some Muslims that were caught eating when they should be fasting.

NAN reports that Hisbah, the Islamic Police, on Wednesday in Kano arrested 10 men and a female groundnut vendor for allegedly eating in the public during the hours of fasting.

The Hisbah spokesperson, Mr Lawal Fagge, who confirmed the arrest, said that the men were arrested near a Kano market while the female vendor was caught eating from her wares.

Fagge said that the arrest was facilitated by a tip-off from onlookers.

Commenting on the incident, the Lagos cleric said that in an ideal Islamic setting, fasting during the Ramadan is scared and should be respected by all.

“Fasting is mandatory on every mature healthy Muslim who is not on a journey. Exempted from fasting are sick people, travelers, the elderly, pregnant and breastfeeding women who cannot bear it.”

  • Prayer and fasting empowers fulfillment of Prophecy!

Welcome to another impactful week! I hope you were blessed by the last teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Prayer and Fasting Empowers Fulfillment of Prophecy!

From scriptures, we understand that prayer and fasting is a business for high level profiting but if we don’t know how to maximise it, we will get nothing out of it. So, it is not just listing our prayer items, it is   aligning the prayer items with the will of God. It is written: And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business (Luke 2:49). So, it is business engaging in Word practice because it is for our profiting (2 Timothy 3:16).  Thus, it is important for us to carry a business perspective of our walk with God as it will help us to be more productive in our engagement. Remember, not every prayer prayed is answered.  To secure our answers on the prayer altar, we must pray according to His will. His will connotes His Word, so we pray according to His Word regarding the issues we are presenting. The Bible says: Produce your cause, saith the Lord; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob (Isaiah 41:21). Strong reasons will come out of strong searches.

Also, as great as these prophetic words are, we have to clear the oppositions resisting the fulfillment of prophecies.   This is because every great door suffers great resistances. And if we don’t clear the resistances, we will just be singing them as a song; it will never come to reality. It will just be a slogan and that is why we are up in prayer and fasting to clear oppositions off our possessions, so we can realise them (1 Corinthians 16:9). So, there is no form of resistance that can spite the authority of the combined forces of faith, prayer and fasting.

Why Then Do We Pray and Fast?

    • To Overpower all the Opposing Forces on the Path of our Glorious Destiny in Christ: The Bible says: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). So, we fast to overpower all resisting forces against our glorious destiny in Christ.
    • To Generate and Build Spiritual Strength into our Spirit man against the day of Battle: We fast to build spiritual energy reserves against the day of battle. As it is written: Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:28-31). So, waiting upon the Lord renews our strength, recharges us, re-energizes us and builds up energy reserves into our Spirit against the day of battle (Proverbs 24:10).
    • To Provoke Speedy Divine Intervention: Our God is a present help in time of need and He said He will help us. So when we experience delay, they are those forces that are against our restoration and we break them in a fast. It is written: Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward (Isaiah 58: 8). Hence, things answer with speed in a fast. God can answer our prayers without fasting, but whether we take delivery of the answers is another question. So, we engage in a fast to clear off the obstructions on the way, so we can take speedy delivery of what belongs to us.

Blessings that Accrue to us in Prayer and Fasting

    • Outbreak of Revelation: Every outstanding breakthrough we notice in the Kingdom is a product of outbreak of revelation. The Bible says: Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward. …then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday (Isaiah 58:8/10). Prayer and fasting provides a platform for outbreak of revelation. So, when revelation is bright enough, speed is the experience.

Empowers our Access to the High Places of Life: It is written: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it  (Isaiah 58:14). So, prayer and fasting is a spiritual platform for our flight into the high places of life.

Empowers Speedy Fulfilment of Prophecy: Jesus was declared the son of God in Luke 3:21-22. As it is written:: Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. So, it was after fasting He took delivery of that fulfilment of prophecy. We are in the era of restoration in the body of Christ because there must be restoration of all things which were spoken by the mouth of the prophet before Jesus returns.

In conclusion, prayer and fasting will be wasteful without faith. As it is written: But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6).  Faith is our covenant signature for taking delivery of our possessions in Christ. Therefore, we must build our faith for prophecies to be fulfilled in our lives. However, you must be born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my books: Winning Prayer, Satan Get Lost, and Born to Win. • Unveiling the blessedness of prayer and fasting!

Welcome to another exciting week! I hope you were blessed by the last teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Unveiling the Blessedness of Prayer and Fasting!

From scriptures, we understand that prayer and fasting is an asset of inestimable value in fulfilling God’s agenda for our lives. As such, it is a non-negotiable requirement, ordained by God for us to experience specific benefits in our lives, as contained in scriptures. As it is written: Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward (Isaiah 58:6-8). As we all know, every of God’s agenda is a spiritual open door which usually attracts oppositions from hell and this is why we are called to engage in prayer and fasting in dealing with such spiritual strongholds. No wonder Jesus said: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21; see also 1 Corinthians 16:9; 1Timothy 1:18). The above scripture helps us to know that some resistances will continue to get stronger without prayer and fasting. In order words, the siege sitting over any aspect of our lives may never move except by engaging the force of faith coupled with prayer and fasting. Remember, there is no other higher kind recognised in the Bible, other than prayer and fasting. We must, therefore, beware of selling our glorious destiny to the belly like Esau, who for a morsel of bread sold his birthright (Genesis 25:29-34).

What, then, are some of the Blessedness of Prayer and Fasting?

    • Fasting Spiritually Expedites Answers to Prayers: The Bible says: Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am… (Isaiah 58:9). Fasting facilitates speedy answers to our prayers. This is why the devil wants to keep us from praying while fasting, so as to rob us of the treasures that await us in it. However, we must get smarter than the devil by engaging with all our heart and might.
    • Prayer and Fasting Enhances Access to Divine Guidance: It is written: The Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not (Isaiah 58:11; see also Psalm 23:1). Everyone who is guided by the Lord is guided into realms of unending abundance (Isaiah 48:21; Ezra 8:21-23).
    • It Empowers us for Dominion: It is impossible to operate in the realm of power without prayer and fasting as a lifestyle. Everyone who has ever operated in the realm of power subscribed to the demands of prayer and fasting. Even Christ had no identity until He returned from a forty-day prayer and fasting expedition. David, in desperate need for power, said: O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory… (Psalm 63:2-3; see also Isaiah 58:6; Luke 4:14-37). This means we cannot experience God’s power without a thirsty soul and a longing flesh.
    • Access to Outbreak of Revelations: It is the light we encounter that sets the pace for the glory we enjoy. The Bible says: Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1). Therefore, fasting period is not just a praying time, but a searching time. It is the time to identify materials that will help us in any area of challenge in our lives. There are things we would never get except we are looking for them in the time of prayer and fasting (2 Corinthians 4:4).
    • Access to our High Places: In concluding the benefits of fasting from Isaiah 58:6, God said: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. That means fasting paves the way forward for us. Nehemiah fasted and received favour. He was a man without identity but succeeded in rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem in 52 days after he had prayed and fasted. This is a proof that fasting paves the way to our high places.
    • It Facilitates Fulfillment of Prophecy: As it is written: This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare (1 Timothy 1:18). Every prophecy must be enforced before it can be realised and one way to enforce its fulfilment is through the weapon of prayer and fasting. Moreover, every prophecy is like an open door and the Bible says: For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries (1 Corinthians 16:9). Therefore, we engage in prayer and fasting to resist every adversary that may hinder the fulfilment of prophecy in our lives (1 Kings 18:42-44).

In summary, if all these blessings accrue to us in fasting, then, it is wisdom to maximally engage in it, so we can begin to flow in the realm of glory the remaining days of our lives. This is because whatever is delivered to us this season is defined as exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Thus, you must be born again. • MSSN feeds 5000 fasting Muslims

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit has held grand Iftar for 5000 at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque, Ikeja.

The event also featured a special prayer for the nation.

Its Amir, Dr Saheed Ashafa said the feeding was to inculcate the culture of charity, welfarism and love in the Muslims.

He urged Muslims to imbibe the spirit of good neighbourliness in relating with the public.

Ashafa said assisting the needy should be of utmost priority to the Muslims at all times, saying such gesture would solve many socio-cultural problems confronting the masses.

He called on government to establish a synergy with religious leaders and help strengthen the frontiers of religion to ensure a crisis-free society.

The guest speaker, Sheikh Abdul Ganiy Abdul Hadi enjoined Muslim youths to use the opportunity of the fasting season to improve on their intellectual capacity particularly the in-depth knowledge of Islam.

He called on Muslims to be politically conscious and keep up with happenings in national and global politics.

“As Muslims, our responsibilities are enormous. People have expectations for us and that’s why we have to be models for people in the society by way of doing the right things at all times. We have to live to expectations. We’ve got to be tolerant of adherents of other religions. That’s how we can be better as a people,” Sheikh Abdul Hadi said.

  • When fasting is not an hunger strike

When fasting is not an hunger strike

The pervasive lethargy across the length and breadth of the body of Christ to critically study (and not only read) the Holy Scriptures has led to a gradual erosion of truth of His word and permanent tenancy with ignorance and falsehood (2 Timothy 2:15). There are lots of facts of the Scriptures that have been distorted because of ‘microwave Christians’ – people that are desirous only of having the shortest cut to everything in life – forgetting that our God is the Lord of order and due processes. To receive anything from Him, obedience to His order or command is very key (Is. 1:19; Deut. 28:1-13 cf 1 Sam. 15:1-23).

One of the maladies of the Christian faith is with regards to fasting which is now being bandied as a mantra to resolution of problems or challenges. It is very common nowadays for ignorant people to be quick to recommend fasting whenever any ignorant believer comes up with an untoward issue of life.  Not only that, lots of congregation’s spiritual ego is massaged and lifted to high heavens when long days of fasting is declared either for a specific program, to climax a year or at the start of a new year or during Lent season among many others.  It is instructive to note that lots of people even engage in different shades of fastings like white fasting, fruit fasting or fasting without food or water.

From the passage where we picked our text, a man brought a report to Jesus Christ concerning his son who was a lunatic and would usually fall into fire and water. The man brought his son to His disciples to heal him but all their efforts were in vain. With a word, Jesus Christ rebuked the demon and the son was healed instantly. The disciples now asked Him why they were unable to heal the boy. Jesus then said unto them, “Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.  (Matt. 17:20-21).

For your fasting to have an effect on any mountain and not be mere hunger strike, it is imperative to first have faith in the Almighty God, that He is and that He has power to save and deliver for “..without faith, it is impossible to please Him” (Heb. 11:6). Then, you can embark on the fasting and must lade it with serious regular prayers. It might be necessary to emphasise it here that for prayer to be effective, you must ensure that you don’t have sin in your life, you must have also genuinely forgiven all that have erred against you and come to Him in penitence ( Is. 1:15-18, 59: 1-3; Matt. 6:12-14). When you have done this, whatever mountain before you shall be lifted at your command. And, this shall be your portion, as you embark on this fasting, in Jesus’ name.

What is a mountain? A mountain is that frightening ‘Goliath’ in your life; it is that problem asking, ‘where is your God?’; it is that power that is behind aimless life journey; it is that problem that is capable of turning a 40 days trip to a 40 years journey; it is that power that has introduced strange sicknesses into your life or problems into your family, education or staff of bread; it is that issue that you have prayed about but which has decided not to shift but abide with you; it is that drug or life challenge that people have agreed will be with you as long as you live. A mountain can also be an animate being – a human being standing before you like Pharaoh or Goliath before the Israelites (Zech. 4:7).

When you fast with faith and prayer, it doesn’t matter for how long the mountain had been with you, it shall relocate of it’s own accord and your life shall experience peace, in the name of Jesus. Besides that, Jesus Christ had promised that nothing shall by any means be impossible with you – what an awesome promise!

Lastly, during this Lenten season, and in your desire to allow it have a meaning, you must forsake every act of wickedness, commit yourself to doing good, be charitable to the hungry, attend to the poor, pay attention to the less-privileged, assist brethren and be a blessing to your community. God has promised that  “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward”. (Isaiah 58:8).

Prayers: Oh Lord, help me during this time of lent to do your will and do not allow me to fast in vain, in Jesus’ name.

  • Bamgbola declares fasting, prayer for Bonnke’s crusade

Chairman, Central Working Committee of Reinhard Bonnke’s Final Fire Crusade in Africa, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola has declared a three-day fasting and prayer for divine visitation during the five-day crusade.

The crusade, the last for the renowned German preacher, holds from November 8-12 at Spark Light Estate opposite OPIC Event crentre on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos, Bamgbola solicited for support of the Christian community and church leaders for the success of the crusade.

He appealed to them to mobilise members and pray for supernatural manifestations during the crusade expected to attract thousands.

According to him: “I wish to specifically invite all the children of the Most High God, all servants of God and all those who fear the Lord across the broad Nigerian and global landscape, to sanctify a three-day fasting and praying sessions beginning from Friday, 3rd to Sunday 5th November.

“I equally enjoin individual saints to continue to wait upon the Lord beyond this specific time, and far into the crusade days for abounding success and massive turn around for our city and dear country.”

He assured God “will mercifully extend His saving grace to millions, heal the sick, elevate the poor, free those in bondage of any kind and heal our land” during the crusade.

“Let’s bend the knees to our God, to heal our land, renew the souls of men and free us from the stranglehold of the devices of Satan and his agents,” Bamgbola appealed.
