    ‘FASU games avenue for unity, healthy competition’

    Stakeholders have underscored the the advantages of sports in African universities, stressing that it can promote unity, healthy competition, and global excellence.

    This was the consensus at the  11th edition of Federation of All Africa University Sports (FASU) Games Scientific Conference, 2024, held at the Lagos State University(LASU) main campus in Ojo.

    The FASU games commenced  last weekend with an opening ceremony that marked the beginning of a week filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie.

    The University of Lagos(UNILAG) and Lagos State University(LASU), are  joint hosts with eleven countries including Angola, Egypt, Ghana, Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Mauritius, Uganda, and Guinea participating. Several of these nations have multiple universities competing in the games.

    The theme of the conference:  “Fostering Unity, Healthy Competition, and Global Excellence through University Sports,” esonated throughout the event as speakers emphasized the pivotal role of FASU sports in harnessing the athletic potential of African youth within tertiary institutions.

    Vice Chancellor of LASU,Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello  extended a warm welcome to all attendees, highlighting how FASU competitions have united athletes from across Africa, showcasing exceptional talent and academic prowess.

    Olatunji-Bello underscored the competition’s potential to inspire innovation and best practices in sports among African universities.

    She envisioned FASU as a platform for cultivating a more cohesive and collaborative cross-cultural environment that transcends regional and national boundaries, emphasizing how university sports can bridge divides and promote unity in Africa by eradicating divisive tendencies.

    Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said the competition would change the landscape of sports in the African universities and nations growth.

    She stressed that FASU would create a platform for university students and athletes from across the continent to engage in healthy competition.

    Ogunsola noted that the competition is aiming at excellent team work, integrity and essential qualities that would transcend to the next generation of FASU.

    Secretary General of FASU,Prof. Grace Olagunju stressed the critical role of sports in nurturing athletes and the academic community in Africa.

    She described the conference as a testament to FASU’s dedication to fostering unity and excellence through sports, recognizing the indispensable contributions of the scientific and educational committees in advancing the games.

     President of the National University Games Association (NUGA), Prof. Bawa Mohammed, outlined FASU’s commitment to addressing key challenges facing sports competitions in Africa through a communique aimed at proposing viable solutions.

    Lotus Bank Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Kalifat Araoye, the keynote speaker, emphasized the transformative power of sports in fostering unity and serving as a universal language that connects individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and nationalities. She highlighted the inclusive nature of university sports in promoting unity, healthy competition, and global excellence.

    Preparations for the All Africa University Games scheduled for September 20-29, 2024 has hit top gear with the organisers listing competitions for the event. 

    This was contained in a post on their official X page.  

    The post readss: “Here are the sports at the #Lagos2024 #FASUGames in Nigeria 🇳🇬

    “Individual Sports: Athletics, Badminton, Chess, Judo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Karate, Taekwondo, Swimming. 

    “Team Sports: Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Handball. 

    “Demonstration sports: Goalball, E sports”

    The event which is to be co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) is expected to witness over 3,000 students from over 100 universities within West Africa compete for medals. 

    Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello had earlier said in a press briefing that the school is ready to co-host the rest of Africa at the games.

    She said, “LASU does not only have the physical facilities but it also boasts of the human and material resources to co-host an unforgettable sporting spectacle.

    “With over 50,000 young people currently studying on its campuses, we are a melting pot of cultures of various Nigerian and African ethnicities and an indisputable embodiment of the Nigerian and African spirit.

    “Ours is a vibrant community of young men and women who are both intellectual and hospitable, a cherished attribute that visitors to LASU will experience as they are treated to the famed Lagos hospitality.”

    • As Lasu, Unilag set  to co-host African students

    Three thousand and five hundred students from over 100 universities across Africa are set to be co-hosted by Lagos State University (Lasu) and University of Lagos (Unilag) in September, 2024.

    It would be the 11th  edition of the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) biennial games with over 15 different events expected to take place and Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello has called for support from well-meaning Nigerians and the Lagos State Government while assuring on a successful event.

    Ibiyemi said that Lagos State University (Lasu) will co-host the 11th   FASU Games with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Games will hold between September 20th and  29th September 2024.

    She said: “I am glad to announce that LASU has embraced this opportunity with both arms and has begun preparations to co-host and win the best FASU Games ever. In pursuit of this goal, our students are already training round the clock to give the university quality representation in various sports events, football, basketball, athletics, table tennis, etc.”

    In attendance inside the Senate Chamber, Baba Tunde Raji Fashola building, main campus, Ojo was deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Funsho Omobintan, deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, University Registrar, Emmanuel Fanu, University Bursar, Said Olayinka, University Librarian, Dr. Omawunmi Makinde, All Deans of Faculties, Director, Sports Centre and all Heads of Department.

    The Vice-Chancellor added: “I invite well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with us in co-hosting this FASU game. Our Marketing/Fund Raising Committee is already on the field to solicit the support of Nigerians, and individual and corporate sponsorships.

    “Please welcome them with open arms when they reach out to you. We also invite vendors to participate with us by showcasing their goods and services throughout the campus during the games. We also call on the Lagos State Government for support to make this event a successful one.”

    Asked how participating students would be accommodated, Ibiyemi replied: “We are ready and have built three new blocks that will be ready to accommodate two thousand students and more if need be.”
