  • Ahead off ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup:Quadri, Assar are favourites – Idowu

Ahead off ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup:Quadri, Assar are favourites – Idowu

Despite dumping his native country – Nigeria to play for his adopted nation – Congo Brazzaville in the last one decade, Saheed Idowu still believes Aruna Quadri and his arch-rival – Egypt’s Omar Assar are favourites for the title at the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup.

Idowu, who edged out Seun Ajetunmobi in the round of 16 of the 2015 African Games told Sport ingLife from his base in Portugal that he would not mind halting the ‘status quo’ in Khartoum.

“Everybody is a good player but we have some tougher ones like Aruna Quadri, Egypt’s Omar Assar and El-Sayed Lashin and not forgetting the old warlords, Segun Toriola and Saka Suraju who are very experienced. But I think all of them will see the best of table tennis in Sudan. But on paper and records Quadri and Assar are the title contenders because of their present forms in most of the tournaments they have featured this year. But I am also ready to turn the tide against them,” he added.

For more than nine months in 2015, Idowu spent most of his days in Hubei, China where they (Congo Brazzaville) honed their skills prior to the 2015 African Games.

When the games ended in Brazzaville last September, their months of training paid off as Congo Brazzaville beat Egypt and Nigeria to the overall medals at the multi-sports tournament.

Having played professional in Sweden, Idowu decided to move to Portugal where he now plays for GD Toledos in the Portuguese elite league and few days to the kick off of the 2016 ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan, the Nigeria-born Congolese is full of optimistm that the tide will turn to his side this time.

But he is aware of the task ahead of him. “My expectations are to go to Sudan and perform well. But I am totally sure that I will perform well because I have been training in my club for weeks in order to be in top shape for the championship,” he said.

“In Africa, we know ourselves very well and there is no much difference in our style of play. Also table tennis is nobody’s game as it depends on your current form during any competition.”

In readiness for the task awaiting him in Khartoum come February 14 to 15,  Idowu said: “Having been selected based on ranking in Africa, I have been tuning up for weeks in my club in Portugal and my teammates have been helpful and I hope this will aid my performance in Sudan.”

NPFL Title Run-in: Enyimba favourites to win-Poll

Despite losing away from home against El Kanemi Warriors and having their momentum halted, Enyimba are still fans’ favourites to lift the Nigeria Professional Football League (npfl) title.

The People’s Elephant have been widely tipped by Goal readers to win their seventh title ahead of close challengers Warri Wolves, Sunshine Stars and Wikki Tourists.

An overwhelming 77.4 per cent of Goal readers believe that the Aba Millionaires have the title in the bag, with eight matches left to play.

Respondents believe that Sunshine Stars, not currently second-placed Warri Wolves, would be the biggest challenger to the title as the Akure team polled 12.2 per cent of the votes.

Wolves come in third with 7.8 per cent while Wikki Tourists are the team least expected to offer a challenge to win the title among the top four sides.

However, Enyimba have a big schedule ahead of them as they welcome Wikki to Aba on Sunday before traveling to Owerri to face eastern rivals Heartland as well as games against city rivals Abia Warriors, Shooting Stars and title rivals Warri Wolves and Sunshine on the last day of the season.

Meanwhile, Sunshine also have difficult ties against mid-table sides Akwa United, Lobi Stars, Enugu Rangers as well as reigning champions Kano Pillars and second-placed Wolves in their final run-in.

This has been the tradition of the NPFL, the team with a better away record and a tight leash at home would stand the best chance of winning the title.

With eight games to go, there’s a lot to play for among the favourites.

  • Super Eagles are favourites -Rwanda coach

Super Eagles are favourites -Rwanda coach

Rwanda’s head coach Stephen Constantine has admitted that Group A which comprises the reigning continental champions Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa is a tall order ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage qualifiers.

Currently ranked 109th, Rwanda is the underdog in this group as has been the case in the last two qualifying stages despite defeating Libya 3-0 on aggregate and dominating a 4-3 penalty shootout after drawing 2-2 on aggregate against Congo Brazzaville last Saturday.

“We have a few weeks before the first game. It is away to Nigeria, obviously the favourites I think for this group,” explained Constantine in an exclusive interview with supersport.com.

“We have six games in three months. It is going to be tough but especially for us. We need to focus on one game at a time. We want to win our home games and try to take away anything from any of the other three. In these kinds of competitions, you need to win your home games and if you do that, you have a good chance to go through.”

The last time the two sides met in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Rwanda held Nigeria to a goalless draw in Kigali before losing 2-0 to the hosts in Calabar. Nigeria went on to qualify for the continental showpiece before winning the title last year in South Africa.

“I am confident the team will perform well and again make the nation proud.

“South Africa is our land; we won the Africa Cup of Nations there last year.

    •Black Stars too

SUPER EAGLES goal keeper, Austin Ejide has listed Nigeria’s Super Eagles alongside Ghana’s Black Stars and Elephants of Ivory Coast among favourites to clinch the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.

Speaking on the chances of the Stephen Keshi tutored-side ahead of the February 10 AFCON kick-off date , Ejide said: ”We have players with great potential and a coach who works hard. Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria are candidates to win the championship. I think it would be a good tournament because South Africa has excellent facilities. Who will be the first choice goalkeeper, me or Enyeama? The coach will decide, not us.” Interestingly, Ejide was looking forward to help Hapoel Be’er Sheva claim all three points against Maccabi Netanya to get their season back on track at press time.

”When you find yourself in the unpleasant situation you need to understand what did not go well and work hard to improve.

“We will do everything to win against Netanya because it is a very important game for us. Overall we lost so far, only four games this season and we are not far from our goal,” Ejide was quoted as saying by one.co.il.

After the match against Maccabi Netanya, Ejide will join his international colleagues in Faro, Portugal.

”The most important for me is to focus on that we get three points before I leave but I’m an international player and I am committed to Nigeria,” he said.
