  • Fayemi swears in new appointees

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi yesterday swore in four members of the State Executive Council (Exco).

He urged them to immediately swing into action and offer their best to the people. The new Exco members are: Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wale Fapohunda; Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Oladapo Kolawole; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Biodun Oyebanji and Chief of Staff, Mr Biodun Omoleye.

At a brief ceremony at the Osuntokun Pavilion of the Government House Grounds, Dr Fayemi said the new Exco members were appointed based on their track record, expertise and experience.

He said they must immediately settle down and inject new ideas to reinvigorate and re-energise government machinery for the benefit of the people.

Fayemi said their immediate mandate is to correct whatever needs correction as well as discharge their duties with fairness and courtesies to everyone.

He said: “You will recall that at the inauguration of this government, I made a declaration of our cardinal programmes to be anchored on the four pillars of Social Investment, Knowledge Economy, Infrastructure and Industrial Development as well as Agriculture and Rural Development.

“I, therefore, wish to admonish the newly sworn-in appointees that much confidence has been reposed in them and what is expected of them is total commitment and dedication to Ekiti State and the attainment of these four cardinal programmes.

“We must all work together to make genuine efforts at reclaiming our land. By the time you resume at your offices, you may discover alarming facts of the current state of affairs. I urge that you must swing into immediate action to correct whatever needs correction. I admonish that you must discharge yourselves with fairness and courtesies to all and sundry.

  • Fayemi, Egbeyemi and second phase of ‘rescue mission’

Another chapter has opened in the annals of Ekiti State, following the swearing in of Governor Kayode Fayemi and his deputy, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. Ekiti State Correspondent ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA examines the significance of the historic event and the people’s expectations of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

I was a historic day in Ekiti State. Mant peopleconverged on the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion along New Iyin Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. More people monitored the event on the radio and television sets and on live streaming on the Internet.

Out of the multitudes, two individuals who had a date with history stood out. The duo,  were clad in white flowing agbada. First arrive was the Deputy Governor, Otunba Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi. Later, “big masquerade” Governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, stormed the venue.

It was an inauguration like no other since Ekiti State was created in 1996; it was full of glitz, and graced by eminent personalities.

The swearing in of Dr. Fayemi and Egbeyemi followed their victory at the July 14 governorship election, which was regarded as the “most keenly contested in the history of the Land of Honour.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which paraded the immediate past Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olubunmi Olusola and former Ado-Ekiti Local Government Chairman, Mr. Kazeem Ayodeji Ogunsakin as governorship and deputy governorship flag bearers respectively.

Egbeyemi was the first to take the oath of office at about 12.09 pm with his wife, Margaret, standing by his side. Fayemi, who was also joined by his wife, Bisi, took his at about 12.16 pm.

The swearing-in was performed by the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Simon Daramola, who was assisted by the Chief Registrar, Mr. Obafemi Fasanmi, and the Deputy Chief Registrar, Mr. Johnson Apuabi.

The governor successfully staged an unexpected comeback to power, which he lost to his predecessor, Peter Ayodele Fayose, in controversial circumstances on the June 21, 2014.

Many pundits wrote Fayemi off, and his admirers, who saw the Ekiti governorship position as a “poisoned chalice,” advised him to walk away and continued serving the country at others levels other than the “thankless job of Ekiti governor.”

But fired by the zeal to serve his  people whom he believed were worsted by the misrule of Fayose, Fayemi declared that he had an unfinished business at the Government House.

What looked like a tall dream became a reality on July 15 when he was declared the governor-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The expectations of the people are high from the APC administration because Fayemi returned to power at a critical period.

Fayemi and Egbeyemi had a rich record of service in private and public capacities and they are expected to bring all these to bear in the performance of their duties. The governor was a pro-democracy activist and was there for the country during the struggle for the return of democracy which came into fruition on May 29, 1999.

Fayemi was first sworn in on October 16, 2010 after a bitter three-year battle in court to reclaim his mandate. He ran his first administration, using his eight-point agenda as a springboard for Ekiti development. He was credited with success in governance, human and infrastructure development.

Some of the landmarks of Fayemi’s first tenure include the payment of monthly stipends to 25,000 aged people (first of its kind in West Africa), first state to domesticate Freedom of Information Law, first state to pass Equal Opportunities Bill to law,  just to mention a few.

Besides, Fayemi also had the experience of serving as a Minister of Mines and Steel Development, in which the Federal Government’s revenue in solid mineral grew in leaps and bounds.

Egbeyemi, on his part, also parades a rich record of public service. He was  a member of the old Ondo State House of Assembly, former Chairman, Ado-Ekiti Local Government (during which the famous Bisi Market was built), Commissioner for Education, Ekiti State, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and member representing Ekiti State on the Board of O’dua Investment.

The people expect the multifarious problems to be solved in one fell swoop. Fayemi, acknowledged this in his inauguration speech and pleaded for patience and understanding.

Fayemi said reclaiming the land from “the vultures” was the first step in setting Ekiti on the path of development, the foundation he laid during his first coming saying:

“This land is ours; and we reclaim what is ours with our voices; with our blood and with our souls. This land is ours; and the air we breathe on it is too sacred for those without souls to inhale. This land is ours; and it shall be free,” he said.

A major challenge before Fayemi is the clearing of the backlog of arrears owed civil servants, teachers and local government workers. They are owed between four and seven months arrears of salaries. Pensioners are owed eight months arrears of their monthly benefits.

At the town hall meetings held in Ido-Ekiti (Ekiti North) and Ikere-Ekiti (Ekiti South), Fayemi said paying the backlog of salaries is his first priority. He sympathised with the workers who had ensured pangs of suffering under the last administration.

At the town hall meetings, the governor abrogated the education tax imposed on pupils in primary and  secondary schools.

He also ordered the return of free education to public schools.

The governor said he would pay salaries promptly and while modalities would be worked out to defray the arrears since the faithful labourer deserves his wage.

A huge mountain to climb is the debt of over N170 billion allegedly left behind by the Fayose administration

Fayemi said: “Independently verifiable preliminary findings indicate that we have been plunged into a debt abyss of over N170 billion, with commitments to innumerable white elephant projects, an average of 8 months salaries owed across government entities, and many state assets unaccounted for.

“We will ensure that within one hundred days from today, Ekiti Kete will know the true position of things, in keeping with our ethos of transparency and accountability in governance. We are not interested in trials by media, witch hunting or playing to the gallery. We will seek out the truth and lay it before our people.”

Another problem waiting for Fayemi’s magic wand is the massive unemployment among the youths.  Although he tried during his first term to engage the youth with initiatives Youth Volunteer Corps, Peace Corps, Traffic Management Agency, Youth in Commercial Agriculture, much is needed to be done.

The governor must think outside of the box to create jobs through agriculture, investment in mining, tourism and establishment of cottage industries to absorb the teeming youth since the civil service cannot absorb everybody.

Fayemi needs to attract more investment to the state and look for ways to shore up its revenue to complement monthly allocations from the Federation Account.

Despite the grandiose projects executed in recent past, Ekiti still suffers infrastructural deficit. Many federal, state and local roads are in a state of disrepair. Apart from these, Fayose left some projects uncompleted, the most prominent being the Oba’s Market in Ado-Ekiti.

The governor, acknowledged the huge task ahead, He noted that they are not insurmountable urging the support of the people of the state.

He promised to anchor his administration on four legs of governance which include agriculture and rural development, social investment, infrastructure development and entrenching knowledge economy.

“As I have said time and again, my coming back to office is not a revenge mission, but rather a healing balm on a painful wound.

However, as the events of the past four years go into the history books, we owe it a duty to ourselves and generations coming after us, to work together to ensure that never again shall we be deceived into making such a grievous mistake that has set us back so steeply on the development curve.

“Certainly, we would not all belong to the same political party nor share the same ideological beliefs, but the reins of leadership in Ekiti State must never again be allowed to fall into the hands of those who do not understand what governance or development is all about.

“Never again should we give up free and qualitative education for herculean fees and taxes levied on our school children; never again should we give up free healthcare and functional hospitals for a total neglect of the health sector; never again should we give up integrated infrastructure development for bridges that lead nowhere; never again should we give up a burgeoning tourism sector and a revitalised Ikogosi for decrepit structures now overrun by reptiles.

“Never again should we give up the peace and unity of our State for increased crime rates and general insecurity; never again should we give up transparent and accountable governance, with the requisite checks and balances of independent Judicial and Legislative arms of government, for draconian one-man shows; never again should we give up our reputation as a honourable and knowledgeable people, to be known as apostles of stomach infrastructure. Never again shall we sacrifice prompt payment of salaries for indulgence in pursuance of projects of minimal benefit to the people. NEVER AGAIN.

“Yet from the ashes we rise and shine as we look towards the light.

The light of knowledge and intellectualism that we are known for, which illuminates our minds and reflects in the good character and pristine values we hold dear. These are the same values that have been eroded in recent years, which we seek to restore.

“Indeed, our mission to Reclaim our Land and Restore our Values, was not only the slogan of our campaigns but a clarion call to all to embark on this journey with us. Today, as we have reclaimed our land, we are now at the cusp of charting the course of sustainable development out of the quagmire that we find ourselves in. In this task, we are faced with a number of threats and challenges, yet blessed with an immense amount of strengths and opportunities.

“My vision for our great State is that this is a place where people can thrive and live their lives in dignity. A place where workers do not labour in vain. A place where our young people do not roam the streets looking for jobs that are not there, a place where people are not so hungry they resort to pilfering food to survive. A place where the cycle of generational poverty can be broken, and in which our elderly can reap the fruits of their labours over their children. A place where people are safe, healthy and prosperous.

“The governance agenda of this administration is therefore compelled to focus on four areas through which we will deliver our promises to the people. The four pillars of our administration will be: Social Investments; Knowledge Economy; Infrastructure and Industrial Development; and Agriculture and Rural Development.

  • Ekiti: APC, Bamisile hail Fayemi over executive order

More commen-dations have been coming the way of Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, for signing an Executive Order abrogating the collection of illegal fees and levies in public schools. The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) praised Fayemi for his determination to revive education and give priority to teachers’ welfare. Also, the party’s House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti South Federal Constituency 2, Mr. Olufemi Bamisile, said the executive order would grant more Ekiti children access to education.

The state APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, in a statement yesterday, said Fayemi’s gesture has shown that the current government has the interest of the masses at heart. While further applauding the signing of the Executive Order, Ajayi facilitated with the people of the state because it would provide free and compulsory education in government primary and secondary schools. Ajayi said the era of collection of illegal levies and fees in public primary and secondary schools by some principals, head and class teachers were gone and gone forever, adding that it would afford poor parents to send their children to school.

Bamisile said the imposition of education levies on pupils in private and public schools showed that former Governor Ayo Fayose was not a friend of the masses as he claimed to be. The former Ekiti Assembly Speaker said the abrogation of the levies by Fayemi was “a declaration of emergency on the education sector”, noting that the masses will benefit from the executive order irrespective of their political backgrounds.

  • Ekiti Assembly confirms Fayemi’s commissioner nominees

Ekiti State House of Assembly has screened and confirmed two commissioners-designate nominated by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

The two candidates, Mr. Olawale Fapohunda and Mr. Oladapo Kolawole, appeared before the lawmakers at about 2.30 pm on Thursday where they were asked questions.

Fapohunda, a lawyer, served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice while Kolawole, a chartered accountant and tax expert, served as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development during Fayemi’s first tenure.

The House at its plenary also approved the request of the governor seeking approval for the appointment of ten Special Advisers.

Speaker Adeniran Alagbada who read a letter from the governor to his colleagues at plenary, urged them to adequately look into the request for smooth runnings of government.

After being grilled by the legislators, Fapohunda and Kolawole were found qualified and fit for positions of commissioners.

The duo are expected to return to their former offices and would be sworn in by the governor any moment from now.

The lawmakers unanimously observed that both men had served the state in the past and performed creditably well.

Deputy Speaker Olusegun Adewumi charged the two commissioner nominees to “think outside the box by attracting businesses into the state to improve the economy instead of overtaxing the people.”

Alagbada also commended Governor Fayemi for choosing people of integrity as commissioners and praised his colleagues for their prompt action.

  • Fayemi signs Executive Order stopping illegal school fees, levies

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi took further steps yesterday to revoke collection of illegal levies and fees in public primary and secondary schools.

The governor signed an Executive Order banning extortion of pupils in the guise of fees, collected by some principals, head teachers and other school officials.

He also approved N200 million as car and housing loans for teachers in public schools to boost their morale.

Fayemi said the loans would be disbursed on or before November 15, adding that payment of salary arrears the last administration owed the workers will begin any moment.

Speaking after signing the Executive Order at the Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, the governor said it also provides for free and compulsory education in government-owned primary and secondary schools across the state.

Fayemi was joined at his table by pupils and students of public schools who applauded him as he signed the order into law.

The Executive Order, the governor said, makes provisions for stiffer sanctions and penalties against school principals and head teachers extorting pupils and students through illegal fees.

He added that the action was taken because of reports that school heads were still collecting illegal fees, despite his pronouncement banning same during his senatorial town hall meetings last week.

Fayemi expressed dismay that some principals and head teachers were still extorting pupils under the pretext of collecting “voluntary donations”.

The governor stressed that the Executive Order would prevent such illegality in schools, eliminate school dropouts as well as encourage children’s enrolment.

He urged parents to report to the Ministry of Education for necessary action any head of school who asks their children or wards to pay any levy.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Princess Adekunbi Obaisi said the Executive Order would strengthen the education policy of the new administration.

Also, the State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Mr Samuel olugbesan said the government initiative marked the beginning of a new dawn in the Education sector.

One of the students, Ruth Ogunseye, lauded the gesture, saying it would bring back some of her colleagues who had been forced to withdraw from school.

A teacher, Mr. Segun Adeparusi, said the approval of N200 million for car and housing loans would motivate the teachers to give their best.

  • Amosun, Akeredolu, Fayemi, Bindow: no plot against Buhari

FOUR governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday defended their integrity after being accused by a pro-Buhari Campaign group of working against the President’s re-election and plotting National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole’s ouster.

The Federation of Buhari Support Group yesterday after a solidarity march in support of Oshiomhole at the nationa secretariat, named the governors as Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa).

In a statement by its Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Sikiru and Publicity Secretary Gbenga Bojuwomi, the group said Akredolu had been busy collecting signatures of governors and party chairmen with the intention to generate a vote of no confidence in Oshiomhole.

The group alleged that Akeredolu was determined to fight Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oshiomhole and President Buhari, adding that with the way the governor had been going, “it will be a miracle if the President gets 10 per cent votes from Ondo State in the 2019 presidential election”.

The group said “Federation of Buhari Support Group in its indepth investigations observed that a lot of damage has been done underground by the conservative governors to thwart the bright chances of the party in the forthcoming general elections.

“Moreover, the group in its previous submission, had raised the alarm on many occasions that Governor Akeredolu was determined to fight three personalities in APC, President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu and Oshiomhole. Mr. Governor of Ondo State is not happy with all the strategies by APC Chairman to reunite the party with a view to bringing democracy to the door-step of party members by the introduction and adoption of direct primaries for all elections.

“Instead for this governor to focus on projects that will better the lot of the good people of Ondo State, he is busy running from North to South collecting signatures of governors and party chairmen in states to pass a vote of no confidence in Oshiomhole.

“Moreso, Akeredolu is not contesting election this time around. It clearly shows that he does not care about the success or victory of the APC in the 2019 elections.

“ Akeredolu is the leader of the new conservative movement within the APC with the assistance of Fayemi (Ekiti), Amosun (Ogun) El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Bindow (Adamawa)

“It was gathered at the weekend, that the sudden death of tenure elongation for their preferred man, Chief John Oyegun, and consequent emergence of Oshiomhole as national chairman to restructure the party has not gone down well with these people, most especially Akeredolu, who is a beneficiary of Odigie-Oyegun’s style of impunity and lawlessness.

“We believe in the leadership of the party ably led by Adams Oshiomhole and his determination to position the party for landslide victory in the forthcoming elections.

“Our party is greater than any individual or group.Let us come together and face our common goal or remaining the most efficient and trusted party in our clime. Together we can make this happen.”

However, in separate reactions, the governors faulted the claims.

Fayemi  said he enjoys the best of relationship with Buhari, Oshiomhole and Asiwaju Tinubu.

He described the group’s claim as”baseless and unfounded”.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Olayinka Oyebode, Fayemi wondered how the group came about the alleged feud with the three senior party figures.

Fayemi said he holds Buhari, Oshiomhole and Tinubu in high esteem, noting that the trio contributed immensely to his victory in the governorship election

He said: “Governor Fayemi holds President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu and Comrade Oshimohole in high esteem and he still maintains with them a good relationship, which is not hidden.

”We don’t know where the Buhari Support Group got their story from; Governor Fayemi has the best of respect for these eminent party leaders and he has no reason to be working against them.

”Let us ask ourselves, on what basis will Dr. Fayemi will be working against the President? This was the man who appointed him Minister and supported him to regain the governorship seat.

“Why will he fight Comrade Oshiomhole? It was under his chairmanship that APC won back Ekiti and everybody knew the role played by the national chairman.

“Asiwaju Tinubu is a mentor to the governor; both of them had come a long way in a relationship that has lasted over two decades.

“In fact, Asiwaju attended the governor’s inauguration last week and the roles he played in the APC victory in Ekiti election cannot be forgotten in a hurry.

“Governor Fayemi has no reason to fight or work against our revered President, our respected national chairman and our revered national leader.

“The allegation is false, baseless, unfounded and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it.”

Akeredolu said he was too busy with state matters and working to develop the state for him to be bothered by “spurious” allegations.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Segun Ajiboye said those behind “fake allegations like these are out for only one thing- seeking to be noticed”.

He described Akeredolu as “a loyal party man, who is working and will continue to work for the party’s progress and do anything that will ensure that the APC continues to win elections at all levels in the country.”

Bindow dissociated himself from the allegations.

His Special Adviser on Media, Macaulay Hunohoshi, said Bindow is a loyal member of the APC who has no reason to plot any evil against its leaders.

“Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu is a respected leader and statesman that Governor Bindow holds in high esteem. Bindow has nothing whatsoever against him and could therefore not do anything that amounts to fighting him.”

On Oshiomhole, Macaulay said Bindow, who won the Adamawa State governorship ticket following “a transparently credible primary” conducted by the APC NWC, could not be bitter against the party chairman, let alone want him removed.

“Comrade Oshiomhole is a former labour leader and two-term governor of Edo State who has shown great leadership as chairman of the APC,” he said.

Amosun, in a statement personaly signed last night, said: ”The ultimate aim of the purveyors of these unconscionable falsehoods is to drive a wedge between me and the President and tarnish my hard-earned reputation. This hatchet job will not work as Mr President is discerning enough to know the sources of the pack of concocted lies.

“The relationship between President Buhari and myself transcends partisan politics. Senator Amosun holds President Buhari in the highest esteem and nothing will change that.”

“The target of this grand campaign of calumny is actually our dear President Muhammadu Buhari

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me state categorically that the people trying to cause disaffection between those of us loyal and committed to Mr. President and the success of APC are plotting to strip Mr. President bare, so that their grand design to achieve unfettered domination of the party would be achieved.”

  • Ekiti monarch, APC elders rally support for Fayemi

The Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Ajibade Alabi, has expressed confidence in the ability of Governor Kayode Fayemi to make positive impact in governance during his second tenure.

The Alawe who described Fayemi’s swearing-in for the second time as “historic and divine” said the former Minister of Mines and Steel Development has the pedigree, exposure and experience to turn around the fortunes of Ekiti.

Oba Alabi made the remark in his palace when he played host to two Ilawe indigenes, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu and Mrs. Yemisi Ayokunle, who recently emerged victorious in the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The traditional ruler described the duo as capable and competent to represent their constituencies at the federal and state legislatures and canvassed support for them.

The royal father pointed out that Fayemi’s pedigree and competence are never in doubt judging by the giant strides witnessed during his first term between October 2010 and October 2014.

In a related development, the APC Elders’ Forum has congratulated Fayemi and his deputy, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, on their assumption of office.

The forum in a statement by its Chairman, Chief George Akosile and Secretary, Chief Abiodun Ajayi, said the inauguration of new government will bring new lease of life to the people of the state.

The APC elders prayed for the success of the new administration for positive transformation of Ekiti State with the hope of realising the dreams of its founding fathers.

  • Fayemi’s first week as Ekiti governor

Governor Kayode Fayemi hit the ground running immediately after his inauguration, taking some actions that brought smiles to the faces of the people. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports on Fayemi’s first week in office.

THE people of Ekiti State are still basking in the euphoria of having a new governor, a ritual that happens once in every four years.

History was made on Tuesday, October 16, when Dr. John Kayode Fayemi was sworn into office alongside his deputy, Otunba Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi, at an impressive inauguration ceremony at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti.

For the residents and guests who made it to the inauguration venue and others who watched the event life on the television sets, Fayemi has a huge burden of expectations and he has expressed the determination to perform.

Based on his performance in his first term, which ran from 2010 to 2014, Fayemi, having been armed with previous experience in governance, is not expected to act as a novice having had a three-month interregnum between his electoral victory and installation.

With the hoopla of the swearing-in over, Fayemi later on that day announce the appointment of  the first set of principal aides to set the machinery of governance in motion.

The governor appointed former Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, as Secretary to the State Government.

Former Chairman of Ijero Local Government and ex-Special Adviser, Governor’s Office, Mr. Biodun Omoleye, was appointed the Chief of Staff, while Mr. Olayinka Oyebode returned to the office of the Chief Press Secretary, which he held during the governor’s first term.

The appointments drew applause in many quarters but knocks in some, especially among the Muslim folks, who had expected that one of their own will clinch the SSG job as it was during Fayemi’s first term.

On Wednesday, Fayemi followed up with Town Hall meetings in Ekiti North and Ekiti South senatorial districts.

The governor, the deputy governor and the wife of the governor, Erelu Bisi, party leaders and other admirers moved to Ido-Ekiti, Ekiti North senatorial district headquarters and Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti South senatorial district headquarters to thank the people for his July 14 electoral victory and to unveil what is in store for the people.

Town hall meetings are key features of the first tenure of Fayemi and they are used to preparing budgets in which the chief executive asked people in villages, towns and cities to submit at least three projects in order of priority to be incorporated into the budget. This resulted in projects like palaces, civic centres, transformers, school rehabilitations, construction of community roads, health centres, markets etc, which are still standing in those communities to date. Apparently impressed by the governor’s decision to visit them barely a day after coming into office, residents in the two senatorial districts turned out in large numbers to receive Fayemi and Egbeyemi. Traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, politicians and other residents, who didn’t belong to any political party, waited enthusiastically for the governor at Odo Udo Primary School grounds, Ido-Ekiti and Ereja Park, Ikere-Ekiti where the parleys were held. Fayemi unfolded some policy thrusts of his administration which, he said, would go a long way in ameliorating the suffering of the people. The governor, during the town hall meetings in the two locations, announced the cancellation of the education development levy imposed on pupils in private and public schools by the Ayo Fayose administration. Under the Fayose regime, pupils in primary school pupils paid N500 each as tax, while students in secondary schools coughed out N1,000 per term.

The imposition of the levy sparked outrage in the state and it later turned to a court battle spearheaded by the Catholic Diocese of Ekiti with the verdict being awaited at the Court of Appeal. Also at the town hall meetings, Fayemi also announced the return of free education in public primary and secondary schools where students paid sundry fees under Fayose. The order for the scrapping of the education development levy and return of free education threw the crowd that thronged the town hall meetings into a frenzy. In Ikere, as the ovation that greeted the policy statement was yet to die down, Fayemi further disclosed that Ekiti pupils in public schools would be enjoying free meals latest by December. Besides, the governor said the welfare of civil servants, who were traumatized by irregular salaries and low morale, would be a top priority for him as he settled down to his gubernatorial duties. Fayemi further gladdened the hearts of the residents by revealing that the monthly payment of stipends to the aged people and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) established during his first term would come back.

Governor Fayemi (2nd right) flanked by Deputy Governor Bisi Egbeyemi and Speaker Adeniran Alagbada and others at a special Jumat Service at Ado-Ekiti Central Mosque on Friday to mark the inauguration of the new government…yesterday.

The policies,he said, are geared towards making life easier for the citizenry, especially the senior citizens, bring government closer to the people thereby reducing less pressure on the state government and offer opportunities of career progression to council workers and politicians at the grassroots. By Thursday, Fayemi hit Abuja for the first time since coming to power to attend the meetings of the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Nigerian Governor’s Forum (NGF). He was the cynosure of all eyes at the two meetings as personalities like Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other governors, led by the NGF Chairman, Alhaji Abdul Azeez Yari Abubakar, welcomed him back to their fold. Fayemi’s presence in Abuja denied him the opportunity to attend an Inter-Faith Prayer/Thanksgiving Service held at the Government House grounds as part of activities to mark his inauguration. Hide original message But the deputy governor held forte for the governor at the inter-faith service where he (Egbeyemi) said the government will not discriminate against anybody in spreading dividends of democracy. Egbeyemi said: “Whether you are a member of APC, PDP or any other party, if your children are in public schools, they will enjoy free education because this government is a friend to everybody. “We will do more than what we did during the first tenure. I moved round with the governor during the campaign and there are projects to show in all towns and villages. “We have said we are not probing anybody but we want to look into the books because workers want us to pay them, pensioners want us to pay them and we are going to work out how we will pay them.” With the action-packed first week, Ekiti people have tasted the stuff the Fayemi administration is made of and they will, of course, continue to ask for more in the next four years.

  • Be loyal to Ekiti, Fayemi tells workers….

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has told senior public servants in the state to stick to the oath of allegiance, which they swore to, by being loyal to the state government rather than to an individual.

The governor also said that the backlog of salaries being owed different categories of workers would be cleared within a year, adding that his administration will not owe any worker.

Fayemi stated this during a meeting with permanent secretaries, executive secretaries and general managers, where he received the handover notes by the immediate past administration from the State Head of Service, Olugbenga Faseluka.

He cautioned, that, there would be repercussions for any civil servants who flouts the rules of engagement.

The governor urged the leadership of the public service to institutionalise work ethics; stating that he is ready to listen to professional advice and sound arguments, that, will serve the interest of Ekiti people.

“I am here to seek your support and collaboration. Be loyal to Ekiti State, not to me as an individual because the word “loyal” has been bastardised by politicians. Do your work in loyalty to the state.

“If it is not done in accordance with the rules of your work, there will be repercussions. If you cut corners, there will be repercussions. So please do your job in the most professional way possible. Stand your ground in terms of work ethics,” Fayemi said.

  • Appointments: Ekiti Muslims angry with Gov. Fayemi

The Muslim community in Ekiti state on Thursday rejected the three major appointments made so far by Governor Kayode Fayemi, since he was sworn into office on Tuesday.

State Coordinator of the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations, (NACOMYO), Mr Tajudeen Ahmed, registered the displeasure of the group at a media briefing, after a protest at the Ado Ekiti Central mosque.

He described the appointments made so far by the governor as not only lopsided but a grand plan to marginalise the Muslim community in the state.

Ahmed said the appointment of the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff and the Chief Press Secretary was against balance and fairness which Fayemi promised the Muslim community.

“The exclusion of Muslims from the principal officers of this administration is worrisome, unjust, condemnable and unacceptable.

“The Ekiti Muslim community saw the appointments as a calculated attempt to exclude it from the fundamental aspect of decision making process in the state.

“Excluding Muslims from the first three important appointments announced by the governor is shocking and highly disturbing to all Muslims in the state,” he said.

The group said Muslims in the state constituted about 40 per cent of the Ekiti State population, adding that the governor was given their total support during the governorship polls.

According to him, the exclusion of the Muslims in this regard is a violation of the fundamental objectives and principles of state policy as enshrined in the amended 1999 Constitution.

“The exclusion of Muslims from the core principal appointments of Dr. John Kayode Fayemi is a violation of the motto of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as provided in Section 15 (1) of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

“Rather than projecting “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress”; the recent appointments made by Governor Fayemi will breed “disunity, commotion and backwardness,” he said.

He called on Fayemi to breathe life into Section 14(4) of the constitution which provided that ‘the composition of the government of a state, a local government council, or any of the agencies of such government or council, shall recognise the diversity of the people.

The Muslim community called on the Governor to urgently review the appointments to accommodate Muslims.

“We also call on Governor Fayemi to ensure inclusion of Muslims in all future  appointments to be made at both state and local government levels.

“This will certainly pave way for the reign of justice, equity and peace in our dear state.”

NAN recalls that Fayemi on Tuesday night after his swearing-in appointed Mr Abiodun Oyebanji as Secretary to the State Government.

He also picked Mr Biodun Omoleye as Chief of Staff and Mr Yinka Oyebode as the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor
