  • FCT party planners look forward to a better year

FCT party planners look forward to a better year

Events and wedding planners bemoan poor patronage in 2016. They are looking forward to a better New Year, writes Jean Ambele

A number of events and wedding planners in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), moan that the current economic recession in the country caused their business to decline in 2016.

Some event and wedding planners, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), however, conceded that they still had some patronage last year, even though the number of festivities had decreased considerably due to the prevalent cash crunch.

They recalled that they welcomed 2016 with high expectations of a revived national economy that would give citizens the opportunity to celebrate their joyful moments but noted that the economy still remained in comatose throughout the year.

The reasons for the sustained economic depression in 2016 are not far-fetched: The year started off with a plunge in oil prices and a drastic reduction in Nigeria’s oil production due to the insurgent activities of a militant group, “Niger-Delta Avengers’’.

Judith Anyawu, a Lagos-based event planner, said the development had made many event planners to be apprehensive of the impact of the economic realities on their business.

She recalled that by February last year, there were strong indications that the events’ planning business would experience a downturn.

“February is known to be a good month for us in the business because of the Valentine’s Day celebration, which normally attracts several events across the country.

“There are various events hosted by churches, offices and individuals to celebrate unity, kindness and love among the people.

“Many marriage proposals are also expected to take place on that day; you might be surprised to know that scores of marriage proposals usually occur on every Feb. 3, the Valentine’s Day, in Lagos alone.

“You can imagine how many marriage proposals that would take place on that day across the country every year, and that is something which all event planners look forward to because marriages are veritable avenues of making good money.

“However, in 2016, I organised only three wedding ceremonies and they were not big ones. You might tempted to attribute that to the inability of people to find ideal suitors or special persons they would like to marry but we found out that most people now decide on simple marriages without any iota of flamboyance whatsoever.

“People have become more money-conscious or frugal; they now see the need to cut down on their expenditures but we then had no idea that the worst has yet to come.

“As months went by, there was an obvious reduction in the number and magnitude of events and weddings that were organised in the later part of 2016,’’ she said.

This is because the economic situation became somewhat hopeless with the abysmal fall of the exchange rate of the Naira in 2016, as over N400 merely fetched one U.S. dollar, while the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, in August, confirmed that Nigeria had slipped into economic recession.

Stefanie Okerafor, a wedding planner in Abuja, said many events and wedding planners hoped to make up for the lost chances during the celebratory month of December, adding, however, that they were totally disappointed.

She recalled that there was a drastic reduction in the number of wedding events organised as the year drew to an end.

“The major wedding months are June, July, August and December. The recession was officially announced in August, even as we began to feel it in June but it hit us hard in September and since then, there has been a drastic decline in the number of events we organised.

“I have clients that had fixed dates for events but ended up making deductions or cancelling the events outright due to some financial glitches.

“I was looking forward to making more profit in December but the month was really `slow’ and uneventful,” Okerafor said.

Sharing similar sentiments, Tonye Jack, an Abuja-based event planner, said: “It was really hard in December and I think it is the worst month I have had since I became a wedding planner four years ago.

“December normally has many events and we, events and wedding planners, are usually busy in December because of the weddings, bridal showers, Christmas parties and other end-of-year festivities.

“We are just hoping for a better 2017 and we pray that more Nigerians would be able to celebrate those moments that ought to be celebrated.’’

Nevertheless, Seun Ajisafe, another event planner in Abuja, expressed the hope that 2016 would be the last year with harrowing economic experience for all Nigerians.

“There was a slight fall in demand for the services of event planners by December of 2015, and I thought that would be the worst experience for us.

“We had high hopes for 2016 but it was a terrible year for all Nigerians. As 2016 drew to an end, I concluded that it was a very bad year, particularly for event planners in Nigeria, and we just pray it doesn’t get any worse. I hope 2016 will be the worst year we ever experienced,” she said.

Looking into the future, observers insist that 2017 portends a better time for events and wedding planners, even though the planners, who are somewhat sceptical, are preparing themselves for a slow recovery to forestall any form of disappointment.

On the other hand, some of the events and wedding planners have decided to veer into other businesses and projects in the dire need to beef up their finances while they await better patronage this year.

All the same, as the clock begins to tick for the year, event and wedding planners continue to pray for the country’s economic revival and a resurgence of the citizens’ patronage of their services which has nosedived considerably.

3.5 million birds lost to bird flu in 26 states, FCT, says govt

THE Federal Government said yesterday that about 3.5 million birds were lost to bird flu outbreak in 26 states and Abuja.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Chief Audu Ogbeh, at an emergency meeting with Commissioners of Agriculture from the 36 states and the FCT in Abuja, said the birds were killed to prevent further spread of the virus to other states.

Describing the situation as alarming, Ogbeh said the meeting became vital to determine progress of the states towards addressing the bird flu situation, including other issues that might affect agricultural activities, such as crops ecological mapping, soil fertility, fertiliser application and others.

Ogbeh said: “The current status of the diseases in the country is quite alarming. It has now affected 26 states and FCT with over 3.5 million birds culled so far. Recently, a new strain of bird Flu Virus (H5N8) was reported in Kano.

‘The new strain is believed to be very pathogenic and more devastating to poultry species and therefore, it may further add to the burdens of the strain (H5N1) that is currently circulating in the country.”

He explained that government banned trans-boundary movement of poultry products and other agro-allied material with high propensity of risk.

However, the minister said government provided diseases containment materials, which included disinfectants, personnel protective equipment (PPEs), plastic transport crates, sprayers, syringes and needles, disposals gloves, Colman boxes, Vacutainer tubes, sample bottles and swabs to the 36 states and FCT.

On how to encourage farmers, whose farms are affected by the disease while sustaining the fight against the spread, the minister said government worked out a participatory and cost sharing compensation programme.

According to him, the compensation plan is restricted to poultry farmers with flock sizes of 3000 birds and below.

He added that compensation proposal will be 75 per cent of their value, with cost sharing between the Federal Government and states at 50 per cent and 25 per cent and at prevailing market value of the birds.

  • FCT to go after vandals, scavengers, traffic offenders

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Security Committee has resolved to go after vandals, scavengers and traffic offenders.

The committee also resolved that the vandalisation of public utilities in the FCT must be stopped , urging the security agents to clamp down on vandals.

The committee noted that most of the traffic lights in the Abuja metropolis hadbeen vandalised, which led to signal failure in interchanges.

The committee added that most street lights, especially those at the outskirts of the city, had been vandalised and warned that all perpetrators would be tracked down to face prosecution.

FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Bello appreciated the support the FCT Administration has been enjoying from the FCT Security Community and called for closer collaboration this year.

According to a statement by the  Deputy Director / Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Sule, the minister said  the FCT Administration would give serious attention to the problems of traffic offenders, illegal activities of commercial motorcyclists, vandalisation of public utilities, restricting of Keke NAPEP to designated areas.

He said abandoned and uncompleted buildings across the Federal Capital City would be properly monitored.

The minister urged their owners to take proper possession as they would be held responsible for any security breach in such places.

Bello also directed the security agents to also restrict the activities of scavengers to dump sites and arrest any of them found roaming around the city.

He announced that the FCT Judiciary has already assigned five Magistrates who are expected to man five Mobile Courts to deal with all these problems.

According to him, the Mobile Courts had been brought in for immediate dispensation of justice and appropriate penalty to serve as a deterrent.

The minister added that arrested commercial sex workers would be taken to the rehabilitation centre in Lugbe for skill acquisition.

Bello also directed the FCT Police Commissioner and the FCT Director of DSS to immediately meet with the graded traditional rulers in FCT as well as the chairmen of the six area councils to strengthen collaboration and fine-tune ways of getting useful intelligence from the grassroots.

He advised the residents of the Federal Capital Territory to pass any useful information on any security situation to the relevant security agencies nearest to them as well as traditional and community leaders.

Brisk business for FCT restaurants, eateries

Many restaurants and eateries in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have recorded high patronage during the Christmas and New year celebrations.

Workers of some of the eateries visited by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday said the current recession did not stop customers from patronising their services.

Ada Obe, a staff of Chicken Republic, said that the eatery had been very busy due to the celebrations.

“Today has been busy for us and we are happy to have started 2017 at this pace.

“Before the Christmas period, things were a bit slow but things changed since the season started.

“We became very busy due to the high patronage and we are happy about it,” she said.

Grace Iozua, a staff of Ace Diner, said, “we anticipated a low turnout of customers during the season because of the economic challenges and the fact that people have traveled”.

“But we are happy to see the number of people that trooped in on Christmas Eve and we have been busy every day, since then.

“I guess it is clear that no matter how bad the economy gets, food will always be an important element of celebration among Nigerians,” Iozua said.

Samuel Obi, a staff of Charcoal Grill, said that there were more customers who came in for the New Year celebration than expected.

“We have had many customers come in today mainly in large groups like families or groups of friends who want to have good food as they celebrate another year.

“I don’t think I can say the economy has affected our patronage much as we know that we Nigerians save money toward celebrating the end of year in style and comfort. However, we pray that things will get better this year.”

FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Bello gave this charge on when the ambassadors paid him a working visit.

Bello emphasized that with Foreign Direct Investment, the economic challenge the nation is facing today would become a thing of the past as that would drastically reduce dependence on imported goods and services.

The minister reiterated that there are lots of investment opportunities in the Federal Capital Territory that could be marketed by the new Ambassadors to their host countries and that the FCTA would leverage on their expertise to sell Abuja to the world.

Bello remarked that there exist opportunities for light industries in the Federal Capital Territory; saying that the Idu Industrial Layout has been provided with adequate infrastructure for such purpose.

According to him, the FCT Administration has also provided an enabling environment for would-be genuine investors to strive and further urged the new envoys to take advantage of such liberalisation.

He reminded them that Abuja is the only city that is a creation of law in Nigeria, the home to all Nigerians, including the ambassadors, and the window through which the world sees the country.

  • FCT woos investors with road rehab

FCT woos investors with road rehab

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is seeking to attract investors through a good road network, reports GRACE OBIKE

THERE is a reason the nation’s capital city centre is looking good these days, its roads fixed: to entice investors.

At his inauguration, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mallam Muhammed Bello promised that one of the steps he will be taking will be the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the FCT road network, especially those located in the city centre.

Since then most road networks that needed repairs or construction have been fixed or are being fixed within and outside the city centre.

Some have sniffed at the effort, saying the repairs should instead be in areas outside the city centre which, to them, is already fine.

Cab driver Emeka David complained that the rehabilitation work is being limited to the city centre, which to him already has a good road network will not make much impact.

He said, “The road in town to me is already good, he should be taking this work to satellite towns and area councils to make better impacts.”

Others have countered that  fixing the city centre roads will get investors rushing into town, a development that will generate jobs and help in reflating the economy.

The Public Relations Officer NASCO group and Royal Pacific group of companies, Haroun Audu explained that the group had met with the Minister earlier in the year and he informed them that part of the mandate of the President in light of the security challenges that has affected Nigeria’s economic performance is to create conducive environment for more private businesses in the FCT so that our economy can grow especially from the point of view of earning foreign exchange.

Muhammed, according to Audu, passed on the information that there are certain critical arteries of roads, within the Federal Capital that he wants to open up to ease traffic to make it easier for the private sector, government and international people to enjoy navigating around Abuja, we are very excited, that shortly after meeting with him, the road is under construction.

He said, “He informed them that the President has the intention of creating an enabling business environment for the private sector in Abuja, we brought to his attention the problem we were experiencing with the lack of road network and drainage in the part of the Central Business district where our structure is situated, now he has fulfilled his promise and Julius Berger Plc has been sent to work on the road, they have begun construction of this road that has been bad for so many years in the city centre, which is truly a welcome development.

”In the face of global and local challenges that have impacted the nation’s business landscape, the soon-to-open Fraser Suites Abuja (2017) is heralded as a major boost to the local economy, and a bright-spark catalyst for international travel and tourism. But by far, the obvious advantage of this project to the Nigerian economy connects to the clarion call for economic diversification, seeing that it will boost the nation’s foreign exchange earnings in exponential terms.

”The facility features 126 Gold-Standard residences that combine comfort, style & technology with outstanding facilities and exclusive in-house services. The location, size and scale of Fraser Suites Abuja will necessarily and automatically avail multiple job and employment openings, to be drawn from the local Nigerian hospitality industry value chain.

  • Abuja indigenes protest quit order by the Army

Some indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday barricaded the main entrance of the National Assembly protesting a quit notice allegedly issued to them by the Nigerian Army.

The leader of the group, Alhaji Jubrin Mamman, said the Army recently encroached into their lands, located at Tunga Maje, along Gwagwalada-Abaji axis of the FCT.

Mamman said that the action violated a court ruling restraining them from doing so.

He further claimed that the security agency had given them up till the end of October to vacate the areas.

“We will not accept to be treated as strangers in our lands.

“We have been living at Tunga Maje and its environs for years and won’t let anyone, including the Nigerian Army, to intimidate us out of our lands.

“We are appealing to the authorities of Federal Capital Territory to tell Army to leave us alone.

“There is an existing court order restraining them from chasing us away from our lands but they are not obeying it.

“That is why we have come to express our grievances,” he said.

Mamman added that the group had earlier petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) on the matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the protesters, who arrived the National Assembly at 11 a.m. prevented vehicles from entering the complex.

They displayed placards with various inscriptions expressing their displeasure over any move to evict them from the area.

However, attempt by the protesters to force themselves into the complex to meet the leadership of Senate and the House of Representatives was resisted by the security operatives.

The main gate was reopened at about 2 p.m. when the protesters had dispersed.
