Abuja residents raise alarm over cracks in walls, compromised foundations

    …seek Wike’s urgent intervention

Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have raised concerns over reported cases of noticeable cracks in walls, compromised foundations, and other structural damages that pose serious safety hazards to their homes.

Residents of Aso Garden Estate in Maitama (Nicon Junction) expressed fear since the commencement of construction works adjacent to their estate.

In a petition written by Dr. Nurain Abayomi Mumuni on behalf of the Chairman of the Estate, the residents highlighted significant and continuous heavy vibrations from the construction activities.

They stated that these vibrations have not only caused discomfort but have also raised serious concerns about the structural integrity of their properties.

The petition, addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, laments that many residents have reported structural issues, including noticeable cracks in walls and compromised foundations, which could lead to severe safety risks.

In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, Mumuni called on Wike to intervene urgently.

The letter, titled “Concern over ongoing construction works adjacent to Aso Garden Estate in Maitama (Nicon Junction) Abuja, FCT,” urged the minister to assess the construction’s impact on the estate and ensure that proper precautions and regulations are strictly adhered to.

“I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing on behalf of the residents of Aso Garden Estate to express our deep concern and anxiety regarding the ongoing construction activities taking place adjacent to our estate.

“Since the commencement of this construction works, we have observed significant and continuous heavy vibrations that have not only caused discomfort but have also raised serious concerns about the structural integrity of our properties. Many residents have reported noticeable cracks in walls, compromised foundations, and other structural damage that could lead to serious safety hazards.

“Unfortunately, this construction began without any prior notification or consultation with the residents of Aso Garden Estate. We believe that such important developments should involve the input and awareness of those who may be impacted directly. Our community has always valued cooperation and communication with authorities, and this lack of engagement is both concerning and disappointing.

“Given the gravity of the situation, we kindly request your immediate intervention to address our concerns. We urge you to assess the construction’s impact on our estate and to ensure that proper precautions and regulations are upheld to protect our homes and well-being. It would be greatly appreciated if a meeting could be arranged between the relevant authorities, the construction management, and the residents to discuss these issues in detail.

“Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. We trust in your commitment to the well-being of all residents within the Federal Capital Territory and look forward to your prompt response”.

  • Tinubu orders construction of more roads in FCT area councils – Wike

Tinubu orders construction of more roads in FCT area councils – Wike

President Bola Tinubu has directed the provision of more road infrastructure in all area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who stated this on Saturday, said Tinubu is concerned about the development of the entire Abuja.

Wike announced the reconstruction of the Dei-Dei Market Road to Life Camp as part of efforts to restore the area to its former status as an international market hub.

He said this during the commissioning of a road project in Sabiru, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), where the Minister assured residents of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises.

Wike said: “Mr. President has directed that this Dei-Dei Market Road be reconstructed to Life Camp so the market can regain its international standard. I assure you, in the next one month, we will flag it off, and by this time next year, we’ll be back to commission it”.

He added that streetlights, initially excluded from the project’s original plan, will now be installed as part of the upgrade.

Praising the leadership of the AMAC Chairman, Wike lauded the council’s ability to execute projects that directly impact the community.

He said: “Your chairman has shown capacity, and when a young man washes his hands well, he eats with elders. It would be unfair not to reward his effort”.

He promised the inclusion of the Zaudna to Kagini Road project in the 2025 budget.

The Minister reiterated the Tinubu administration’s focus on equitable development across Abuja, stating that every area council will benefit from at least one road project in the 2025 budget.

“We are not concentrating development only in the city. President Tinubu has directed that every community must feel the impact of governance,” he said.

Wike also emphasized plans to renovate schools and improve education for children in the area, urging residents to remain patient as the government works to address longstanding challenges.

“Things have been tough, but with your support and patience, this administration will deliver a better Nigeria,” he concluded.

Residents of Sabiru, who turned out en masse to show appreciation for the government’s efforts, expressed satisfaction with the projects and pledged their continued support for the administration.

Earlier, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Hon. Christopher Maikalangu praised the Wike, for his exceptional commitment to rural and urban development in the FCT, describing him as a “God-sent leader” who has brought unprecedented progress to communities in AMAC.

“On behalf of the people of AMAC, I express our deepest gratitude for delivering this beautiful Saburi access road in record time.

“Bulldozers and caterpillars moved in immediately after the flag-off, dispelling any doubts about the project’s completion,” Maikalangu said.

He added that the Gbagyi people have given Wike the title “Wike Abowoweyi,” meaning “The Magician of Our Time,” in appreciation of his tangible impact on their lives.

Maikalangu highlighted the positive impact of the road project on the Gwagwa Ward, noting that it has boosted business and economic activities in the area.

He also applauded Wike for approving the construction of police stations in Saburi and Takushara, emphasizing that the projects will enhance security and improve the quality of life for residents.

Asking for further intervention, Maikalangu appealed for the construction of access roads to Zaudna, Kaba, and Kagini, which have been neglected for decades.

“These communities require two bridges before road construction can begin, and I urge the Minister to come to their aid,” he said.

  • Tinubu’s inclusive governance has overtaken Muslim-Muslim ticket-Northern CAN

Tinubu’s inclusive governance has overtaken Muslim-Muslim ticket-Northern CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja has noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inclusive governance irrespective of ethno religious differences of the people has overtaken the hitherto heated argument about the Muslim-Muslim ticket at the Presidency.

However, the Northern CAN chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam told newsmen in an interview shortly after the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the CAN in Kaduna that it would be good to have a Christian as number two citizen at the Presidency for balancing between the two major religions in the country.

“For me, the most important thing is a government that is inclusive and as far as they have done Muslim-Muslim ticket, we have also seen reasonably inclusiveness. Left for us, we will say yes, let’s have Christians in certain positions like Vice President and other positions to reflect our diversity.

“The Presidency will be good to bring  a Christian as number 2.  We will appreciate it, there is nothing wrong with that. Whatever way  the important thing is that insecurity should be tackled

“We know the desire of people is to see that insecurity is addressed so that they can go about their normal daily activities without fear.

“This is already happening, we want the government to declare a complete state of emergency on the issue of insecurity. We may have a Christian there and killings may still be going on, but it is something we still pray for.

“The performance of the current administration is going on a little bit better, but we want them to do more. There are pockets of things here and there that should be addressed. The situation is not as bad like the previous years where there were bombings.

“I think major challenge now is hunger. People are really, really suffering. Prices of commodities are crazy. That is what we are crying for now.  But the President has said that with time… I believe, let’s see how it goes”.

In his address to the meeting, Rev. Pam said: “Your presence here today reminds us of our duty to continually pray for His Excellency, the President, and for the peace, progress, and prosperity of our beloved nation.

“While we celebrate unity and religious harmony, we cannot overlook the significant challenges facing Christians and the general population in Northern Nigeria.

“Our region continues to grapple with widespread insecurity, including banditry, insurgency, and terrorism, which have destabilized communities and left many displaced.

“The menace of kidnapping for ransom remains a pressing concern, causing fear and hardship for countless families across the North. The ongoing crises between farmers and herders have devastated lives, disrupted agricultural activities, and threatened food security in the region.

“Christians in some states still face challenges in acquiring land for church buildings, as well as marginalization in political appointments and access to opportunities.

“The rising cost of living and limited economic opportunities have left many struggling to survive, particularly in the face of insecurity and displacement.

“We appreciate the efforts made by Mr. President and his administration to address these issues, but we appeal for greater intervention to restore peace and stability in Northern Nigeria.

“We also wish to express our concerns regarding political appointments. For example, in the North-West Development Commission, no Christian from the region was considered for appointment; instead, a Christian from the South-East was included.

“While we acknowledge and thank Mr. President for appointing a Christian as SGF and a few ministers, we humbly request more inclusion of Northern Christians in key political positions and decision-making roles.

“We commend your unwavering commitment to promoting religious harmony and unity in the discharge of your duties. Northern Nigeria has endured significant setbacks due to religious crises, and we need leaders like you–leaders who prioritize unity, fairness, and peace”.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Christopher Tarka, informed the gathering Tinubu was committed to promoting good governance across the country.

The SGF urged Northern CAN to continue to pray for unity, love and peace in the region.

“Let me begin by assuring you that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is fully committed to promoting good governance, equity, and inclusivity across all regions of Nigeria. The President’s actions, particularly during the last Christmas season—providing palliatives to Christians across the North, reducing fuel prices, and prioritizing security during the festivities—demonstrate his commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians.

“Rest assured that this administration is determined to address the pressing challenges facing the Northern region, including insecurity, kidnapping, farmer-herder conflicts, and economic hardship. The government is working tirelessly to restore peace, stability, and economic growth in affected areas.

“The concerns regarding difficulties in acquiring land for church buildings and the perceived exclusion of Northern Christians in key political appointments are well understood. I will personally bring these issues to the attention of Mr. President to ensure that they are addressed appropriately.

“I acknowledge the concerns regarding the lack of representation of Northern Christians in the North-West Development Commission. While I appreciate the recognition of the steps already taken by the President, such as appointing a Christian as the SGF and other ministerial roles, I assure you that we will continue to advocate for greater inclusion of Northern Christians in decision-making positions.

“The government is working on robust policies and measures to address insecurity, ensure justice, and create economic opportunities that benefit everyone, particularly in the Northern region.

“As a Christian and a servant of this great nation, I am fully committed to standing with you and supporting you at all times. I see my role not only as an administrative duty but as a divine assignment to serve as a bridge between the government and the Christian community. Together, we can foster unity, peace, and progress in our country.

“I will remain steadfast in promoting the values of inclusivity, fairness, and harmony, which are central to the teachings of Christ. I am deeply aware of the challenges you face, and I assure you that I will be your voice in the corridors of power.

“Let me commend the Northern CAN for your continued prayers, advocacy, and efforts to maintain peace and unity in Northern Nigeria. Your role in promoting interfaith dialogue and fostering understanding in this region is invaluable. I urge you to continue these efforts, knowing that the government is fully behind you.

“This administration recognizes the critical role of the Church in nation-building, and we will continue to support your initiatives and collaborate with you to ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians.

“As we embark on this new year, let us renew our collective commitment to peace, unity, and progress. I assure you of my unwavering support, both as a fellow Christian and as a representative of this government. Together, we can overcome every challenge and build a nation that reflects the values of justice, equity, and love,” the SGF said.

FCT doctors suspend warning strike following Wike’s intervention

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT) has suspended its three-day warning strike after the intervention of the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesome Wike.

The President of the Association, Dr. George Ebong, in a statement on Friday night said the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under the minister had met their demands.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that ARD-FCT had on Wednesday, Jan. 22, commenced a three-day warning strike to press home some demands from the FCTA.

The strike grounded most the government hospitals in the FCT, as the doctors claimed that some of them employed in 2023 were yet to received some arrears, allowances, and other benefits.

The doctors also listed the deplorable conditions of some the hospitals in the FCT, manpower shortage among other demands.

However, Ebong in the statement revealed that its members have started receiving the alerts of unpaid six-month salary arrears.

The ARD-FCT President said that the Minister had approved, as well as ordered immediate payment of the accoutrement allowance owed members.

He said that the Minister had also given approval for medical residency bonding training to 2 years; approval of immediate employment of doctors and allied health workers.

Ebong said that the Minister had also given approval for payment of locum doctors and other health workers that were being owed, noting that “with the intervention of the Minister, doctors are expected to resume work with immediate effect.”

He added that the intervention had also put an end to the impending indefinite shutdown of hospitals in Abuja, while urging the Minister to brace-up and meet other demands to avert future strike action.

“On behalf of the executive members and the entire supreme congress of ARD-FCTA, I, Dr. George Ebong, deeply appreciate the Minister for his prompt and timely intervention in meeting our demands, thereby ending our warning strike.

“We also humbly plead with the Minister to put a mechanism in place to avoid a repeat of this anomaly. We are hopeful that other demands will be attended to in due time,” Ebong said.

The ARD-FCTA President expressed the association’s believes in the capacity of the Minister to turn the FCT health sector around as a stakeholder in the renew hope agenda.

Ebong also used the opportunity to invite the Minister to all the district hospitals in the FCT, while assuring him of doctors continued support in the realisation of the administration’s renew hope agenda.

THE NATION gathered patients in general hospitals were unattended to because the doctors were on strike.

Sources said it would be a three-day warning strike that may become indefinite if the government fails to accede to their demands.

The Association of Resident Doctors in the territory issued a 14-day day ultimatum strike warning to the FCT Minister on December 23, 2024.

“Implementation of skipping and issuance of skipping letters to its members employed in 2023. Immediate payment of accouterments allowance for 2024, and payment of outgoing 13 months’ hazard allowance arrears, among others demands.”

One Mrs. Ihiaka, who accompanied her daughter on a wheelchair to General Hospital Kubwa, described the situation as sad, lamenting she was left with the option of looking for a private hospital, no matter the cost.

  • INEC fixes date for FCT area council elections

INEC fixes date for FCT area council elections

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Wednesday announced February 21, 2026 as the tentative date for the conduct of the chairmanship and councillorship elections into the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking at the first meeting of the commission with leaders of the registered political parties, Prof. Yakubu also asked political parties to begin preparation for the conduct of party primaries for the Anambra governorship election.

Prof. Yakubu said the notice of elections for the Area Council polls will be published on February 26, 2025 in line with the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act.

He said: “Even as we prepare for the Anambra State Governorship election, we are always mindful of our responsibilities for other elections and electoral activities.

“For instance, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 requires the Commission to issue the notice for elections not later than 360 days before the date of the election. This applies to the General as well as off-cycle elections.

“As you are aware, the commission is responsible for the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the only part of the country where INEC conducts local government election. The last Area Council election in the FCT was held on 12 February 2022. By the effluxion of time, the tenure of the current Chairmen and Councillors ends next year.

“Consequently, the Commission has approved that the 2026 Area Council election in FCT will hold on Saturday 21st February 2026. Voting will take place in all the designated Polling Units across the 68 constituencies to elect the six Area Council Chairmen and 62 Councilors.

“In compliance with the mandatory legal requirements, the notice for the election will be published next month i.e. 26th February 2025. Party primaries will be held from 9th – 30th June 2025. The candidate nomination portal will open from 9.00am on 21st July 2025 to 6.00pm on 11th August 2025.

“The final list of candidates will be published on 22nd September 2025. Campaign in public by political parties will commence on 24th September 2025 and end at midnight of Thursday 19th February 2026”.

Prof Yakubu said the Commission conducted 51 re-run elections, bye-elections and off-cycle elections in 2024, adding that “In February, the Commission conducted re-run elections in 39 constituencies combined with nine bye-elections arising from vacancies in the national and State Assemblies nationwide. We also conducted two Governorship elections, the last one held in November 2024 in Ondo State.”

He said that in 2024, the Commission “had several electoral activities, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections, the publication of our 2023 General Election Report and the release of the Review Report containing 142 recommendations arising from our in-house and external engagements with stakeholders.

“Similarly, we sustained our engagements with stakeholders. During the year, we had a total of 16 regular quarterly consultative meetings with political parties, civil society organisations, the media and security agencies in addition to extraordinary meetings as the need arose”.

He said further that “In terms of elections and electoral activities, the year 2025 is going to be busier than 2024. You may recall that at our fourth regular consultative meeting held on Thursday 17th October last year, the Commission released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Anambra State Governorship election holding on Saturday 8th November 2025.

“Already, the Notice of Election has been published over two months ago as provided in the Timetable. The next activity is the conduct of primaries by political parties. May I remind leaders of political parties that primaries for the nomination of candidates for the Anambra State Governorship election begins in the next two months i.e. 20th March to 10th April 2025.

“You may similarly recall that at our last regular meeting, we agreed that you will forward your schedule of activities for the election to the Commission to enable us work together and plan better for the deployment of personnel and resources for the monitoring of your party primaries and campaign activities in order to avoid the last minute rush with the attendant inability to meet deadlines and unnecessarily dissipate our energy and lean resources.

“So far, only a few parties are in compliance. I urge those that have not done so to submit the details by the end of this week”.

He expressed sadness over damages caused to the commission property in Benin, Edo state, Sankara in Benue state and Owa Oyino in Benue state.

He said “sadly, in 2024 our State office in Benin City was flooded but we were able to recover ahead of the election. Elsewhere, two of our Local Government offices were attacked in incidents unrelated to elections or electoral activities.

“In Sankara, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, our office, along with other public buildings and private institutions in the area, was attacked during a local protest against insecurity. In Owa Oyibu, the headquarters of Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, our office was destroyed in a fire incident.

“The Commission is glad that our staff were safe in the two locations. However, many electoral assets were lost and the buildings substantially damaged.

Yakubu said the Commission will come up with plans for other routine activities such as the resumption of nationwide Continuous Voter registration (CVR) and the conduct of outstanding bye-elections.

He said also said that “Over the last one and a half years since the inauguration of the current National and State Assemblies in June 2023, vacancies have occurred in 23 constituencies as a result of death of serving members or their voluntary resignation for executive positions at Federal, State and even Local Government levels as Ministers, Commissioners, Chairman of a Local Government and even board appointment. While the Commission has conducted nine bye-elections early last year, 14 more vacancies have occurred since then.

“They are unpredictable, unbudgeted and difficult to plan in advance. Worse, some bye-elections lead to more bye-elections. There were situations where a bye-election in one Senatorial District was won by a serving member of the House of Representatives from the same District thereby creating another vacancy.

“In turn, a member of the State Assembly won the bye-election to the House of Representatives thereby creating a vacancy in the State Assembly. Consequently, one bye-election led to three bye-elections. Not only are these bye-elections costly, they also divert the Commission’s attention from its other extensive electoral responsibilities.

“Over the last nine years since 2016, the present Commission has been advocating for a more cost-effective alternative means of filling vacancies as is the case in many jurisdictions around the world.

“We have similarly been appealing to stakeholders, including political parties, to join the advocacy and for the National Assembly to amend the law accordingly.

“Just three weeks ago, we canvassed this position once again during the defence of our 2025 budget before the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives at the National Assembly. We are glad that more Nigerians are now joining the advocacy. We hope that working together, we will continue to reform and improve on our electoral process.”

Niger Delta group demands 40% oil licences for indigenes

The Niger Delta Community Youth Association has demanded that 40 percent of oil licences be allocated to people from the oil-producing areas.

The group made the demand through demonstrations staged across the Niger Delta states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as a petition addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio through its lawyer, Blessing Agbomhere.

The group stated that its demand for a fresh licensing bid was in line with stipulated extant laws, including the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

It expressed concern over the recent alleged allocation of oil licences by the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to corporate entities and individuals with no ties to the Niger Delta region.

In a statement in Abuja by the Youth Leader of the Association, Comrade Embale Jonathan; his deputy, Omeizah Ogumah; PRO, Boma Doreye; and Ex-Officio, Comrade Sunny Ifijen, it was stated that it is unacceptable for their ancestral lands, which have been ravaged and degraded by oil exploration, to be handed over to outsiders.

According to the group, it is unacceptable that oil prospecting licences and oil mining leases are not allocated to the Niger Delta people.

It said: “The recent barefaced, demeaning pattern of allocating oil-prospecting licences to non-Niger Delta interests is an unacceptable, unjustifiable, and anti-developmental trend of a high-wired plot against the people of the Niger Delta.

“The action of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) deviates from the intent and spirit of the 2021 Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which recognises Indigenous interests in the oil and gas industry. Hence, such non-inclusion of indigenous interests signals exclusion and non-transparency that will be counterproductive for the oil and gas industry and the entire nation.

“As indigenous peoples of the Niger Delta region, we have been historically marginalised, exploited, and excluded by the oil and gas industry. Our communities have suffered environmental degradation, pollution, and health hazards due to the activities of oil and gas companies. Yet, we receive pittances in benefits from both the government and internal oil companies.”

They called for a thorough review of oil block owners’ commitments to environmental cleanup in polluted areas and demanded adequate compensation for the affected communities.

Additionally, they stated that corporate social responsibility (CSR) obligations of individuals and entities owning oil blocks should be strictly enforced.

They urged the Senate and other necessary agencies to take the demands seriously and work towards a more equitable and just society for all Nigerians.

Like-Minds Coaches  fault  FCT FA  on purported suspension

Coaches Luke Olaiya and Meschach Olatunji of Like-Minds Football Club have strongly condemned their  indefinite suspension  by the FCT FA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, citing gross violations of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) statutes. They expressed their dismay during a press conference in Abuja, calling for immediate intervention by the NFF to address what they described as procedural irregularities and a deliberate smear campaign.

Olaiya, recounting the events that led to his suspension, said: “I am a construction worker who coaches part-time. On the day of the election, I was coming from the site with my tools, including a penknife. The police stopped and searched me, and after I explained my situation, I was allowed to go pending further investigation. Despite this, the FCT FA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee rushed to suspend me indefinitely and issued a report to the public without board approval, violating their mandate.”

He further criticized the lack of proper procedure in summoning him to the committee.

“I was given less than 48 hours to prepare for the panel, which is a blatant disregard for the NFF statutes. The rules clearly state that if a defendant fails to appear, a reminder should be sent. Instead, the committee issued a public report the same day, another glaring breach of protocol,” Olaiya added.

Meschach also raised concerns about the composition of the committee, alleging that it included individuals with questionable track records.

“The committee had  Mansur Abdullah, who was banned by the FCT FA board in November, and Barr. Jimmy Kadiri, who is still under suspension by Gwagwalada Area Council. These are the same people tasked with making decisions that impact the integrity of football in the FCT. Their actions seem designed to tarnish our image and that of our club,” he stated.

He clarified that the issues raised have no direct connection to Like-Minds Football Club.

“We attended the election as observers, not representatives of the club. It is baffling that the club’s name is being dragged into a matter entirely unrelated to it,” Meschach added.

The coaches jointly appealed to the NFF to ensure fairness and uphold the statutes guiding football governance.

“FCT football has always been known for peace and order. As stakeholders, we are committed to preserving this legacy and will not condone any act that disrupts the harmony of our football community,” Olaiya concluded.
