    Ofoedu eyes F/Eagles call-up

EX-ENUGU Rangers marksman, Chikeluba Ofoedu has declared his readiness to star for Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles adding that he is the missing link in the bronze winning side just back from the Africa Youth Championship held in Algeria.

The 1461 Trabzon of Turkey in-form attacker said he can score goals for the Team at the World Youth Championship in Turkey in June if given the opportunity by Coach John Obuh.

“I congratulate the Team for qualifying for the world Youth Championships and am happy it will be played here in Turkey

“Please help me tell Coach Obuh that I want to be part of his team to the Championship and I want to score goals for the team,” the 20 year Old Ofoedu said.

Ofoedu has scored 9 goals in 18 games for the senior team of Trabzon since January.

“By God’s grace, I am doing well for my club here and I think I can translate that club form to the flying Eagles and fans here will be happy to see me playing for my country,” Ofoedu added.

Nigeria will play in Group B alongside Cuba, Korea Republic and Portugal with the Flying Eagles opening against the Portuguese Junior Team on June 21 in the Kadir Has Stadium, Kayseri.

Coach Obuh has promised to ring changes to the Team that finished third at the Algeria tournament ahead of the World youth Championships even as the Nigeria Football Federation has set the tall ambition of winning the top prize for the team.

  • 2013 AYC F/Eagles get $2,000 winning bonus

Each Flying Eagles player will receive $2,000 (about N315, 000) for a win in the group stage of the 2013 African Youth Championship, officials have announced.

The Nigeria U20 players previously received a $1,000 and an improvement of this win bonus is expected to ginger the team in their title defence.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) director of competitions, Sanusi Mohammed, made the announcement on arrival at the team’s training camp in Tunisia Saturday afternoon.

Sanusi also charged the team to fly Nigeria’s flag highest in Algeria.

“After what your senior brothers achieved in South Africa, all attention is now on any Nigerian team and so you must go on and again do the nation proud,” he urged.

“You did it two years ago in South Africa and you can do it again in Algeria.”

Sanusi is due to depart for Algeria on Monday to ensure everything is in place for the defending champions by the time they depart Tunisia on Wednesday evening.

    Pre-AYC: F/Eagles meet Esperance U-20, Club Africain

The Flying Eagles will step up their preparations for the African Youth Championship in Algeria with two more test games in Tunisia against Esperance U-20 and Club Africain.

The Nigeria U-20 will take on Esperance on Tuesday, while the team will battle top club Club Africain, who lost in the final of the 2011 CAF Confederation Cup, on March 11.

Team secretary, Aliyu Ibrahim Lawal, said both match will have night kick-offs of 7pm as the Flying Eagles will play a late night game in the tournament.

Futaa.com reports that the Nigerians had lost two warm-up matches in Tunisia.

The team lost 2-0 to the Tunisian U-20 team and then 2-1 to Esperance main team.

The John Obuh-led Flying Eagles also defeated the Egyptian U-20 team 3-1 in Cairo and drew a second game 0-0 also in Egypt.

Obuh sure of F/Eagles despite Esperance loss

FLYING Eagles coach John Obuh has reassured his team will be up to the task at the 2013 AYC even after they lost 2-1 to Esperance in a bruising warm-up on Saturday.

The Nigeria youth team lost their first test game to Tunisia U20s 2-0 on Thursday.

“The result was again not what we expected, but the performance of the team has reassured us we will be the team to beat in Algeria,” Obuh said after the match played at the El Menzah Stadium training pitch in Tunis.

“It was a good game but we have to work on our goal scoring and I expect the players not to lose their composure even when the referee has made a few bad calls.

“All the same, I believe in this team. We have worked very hard and we will continue to work even harder to ensure the best for Nigeria.”

The Nigeria U20s controlled the first half against the two-time African champions, who lined up a very strong starting XI that included new signings Emmanuel Clottey from Becham Chelsea of Ghana and Nigerian-born winger Emeka Emerum as well as Tunisia internationals Houcine Ragued and Wajdi Bouazzi.

The Flying Eagles created the best chances in a goalless first half and will again have to blame their finishing for not going ahead in this test game.

Christian Pyabara had an effort blocked by goalkeeper Wassim Naouara from inside the box after 27 minutes and in the 35th minute, skipper Abduljaleel Ajagun failed to make the most of a free header right inside the box.

The biggest chance of the first period fell to Pyabara when he only had to guide the ball into an empty net after a great work from the left by Alhaji Gero, but somehow he skied his effort over the bar.

Esperance, who brought in Ghana international defender Harrison Afful, Algeria star Antar Yahia and first-choice goalkeeper Moez Ben Charifia after the interval, took the lead in the 50th minute when goalkeeper Jonah Usman failed to clear the ball and in the ensuing melee that involved Emerum, Lampjed Chehoudi fired home.

The perennial Tunisian champions doubled their advantage two minutes later when Kingsley Madu brought down Clottey inside the box and skipper Khalid Chammam tucked away the spot kick.

Nigeria midfielder Moses Orkuma was sent off for retaliation in the 59th minute.

However, substitute Umar Aminu pulled a goal back for the African youth champions in the 67th minute after a flowing team play.

The Flying Eagles finished stronger as they continued to fight for the equaliser, but Esperance held out to barely shade a hard-fought encounter.

The Nigeria U20s are slated to test their readiness for the AYC in Algeria with two more test games against Club Africain and the Esperance U20 team.

Suswam backs F/Eagles for World Cup

FORMER FLYING Eagles ace Terna Suswam has predicted the country’s U20 team will again qualify for the World Cup.

Nigeria are drawn in Group B of next year’s African Youth Championship in Algeria along with Gabon, DR Congo and Mali with the top two teams advancing to the semi-finals and automatically bagging a ticket to the World Cup.

“They will certainly qualify for the World Cup. I have no doubt what so ever about that. I watched some of their qualifying matches and with what I saw I am very confident they will be at the World Cup in Turkey,” he told MTNFootball.com.

Nigeria crashed out to France in the quarter-finals of the 2011 FIFA U20 World Cup in Colombia. However, Suswam, who was part of the last U-20 team who won the AYC last year in South Africa, warned the present team not to underrate any team in Algeria.

“They must approach every game like a cup final if they want to retain the cup because there are no minnows anymore in African football,” cautioned the Vitoria Setubal of Portugal defender.

The AYC kicks off on March 16 in Algeria.
