June 12: It’s not too late to honour MKO – Reps

THE House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to posthumously confer the highest national honour – the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal republic (GCFR)  – on the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale A biola.

According to them, this would be  a measure of recognition for his unprecedented achievements, contributions and sacrifice to the unity, peace, progress and development of Nigeria, Africa and the world.

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion by Sani Zoro (APC, Jigawa).

Zoro said there were several reasons to justify Abiola’s immortalisation.

We remember him today as always, as a true and great son of Nigeria, who touched lives more than any other person in his life, who contributed to the achievement of religious harmony by building bridges between faith organisations like nobody else, the humane boss, who employed Nigerians from all walks of life and treated them with affection and care as if they were members of his family, the man who championed the good cause of Africans for the exploitation and the heinous crime of slavery meted to them.

“It is sad though that despite these uncommon qualities, capped by his victory at the presidential election of June 12, 1993, but which was denied him by retrogressive forces in conspiracy with agents of destabilisation – that Nigerian authorities had never at any given time conferred a national honour on him, in his eventful life time or posthumously, despite the fact that many Nigerians and non-Nigerians of dubious value had continued to be decorated with such national honours year in, year out.

“There are abundant justifications to immortalise Abiola, to do that going by the event of June 12.

“Abiola and Buhari shared so much in common, even in popularity. While Abiola got eight million out from a total of 14 million votes, President Buhari got 15 million out of 28 million. That’s half of the total votes by the two.

“Justice can still be done, even 24 years after. It’s never too late.”

Anayo Nnebe (PDP, Anambra) said the annulment was an injustice through executive recklessness.

“Whatever reasons Ibrahim Babangida gave for the annulment cannot erase the fact that Abiola won the election

“Abiola is entitled to that award because it will be discouraging if it is such that the system only recognises and remembers criminals,” he noted.

Saying that June 12 transcends a regional issue, Nnnebe noted that the day deserved to be declared a national public holiday to be celebrated by every Nigerian because the entire country voted for Abiola in the ill-fated election.

“It was not a Southwest issue; let every part of the country celebrate the day, justice should start by declaring June 12 a national holiday,” he added.

Olufunke Adedoyin (APC, Kwara), who wondered what had changed about the long-held notion that Abiola should be immortalised, asked why the House as in times past rejected motions calling for the late politician to be officially recognised by the Federal Government.

“Abiola’s immense contributions to the nation should be recognized; he was a philanthropist with an Africa agenda,” she added.

Wale Raji (APC, Lagos) said the greatest honour that can be bestowed on Abiola posthumously is to release the annulled result and declare him winner of the election.

The motion was unanimously adopted after it was put to a voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

Fed Gov to prosecute purveyors of fake news

The Federal Government yesterday said it will not relent until it has exposed those behind the fake news phenomenon in the country and bring them to justice.

In a statement in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said those behind the fake news had the intention of destabilising the polity and causing disunity among the country’s various ethnic and religious groups.

The statement was signed by the Special Adviser to the Minister Mr.  Segun Adeyemi.

The minister urged Nigerians to be extra vigilant in view of the worsening cases of fake news being spread by the unscrupulous persons.

Mohammed noted that over the weekend alone, several major cases of fake news were recorded, each of them capable of causing panic, triggering chaos or setting one group against the other.

He said a gory video of a blast that occurred many years ago was being circulated along with the false news of a bomb blast in Abuja. News of a non-existent bomb blast in Lagos was also widely circulated.

He said the Police had, however, debunked the fake news.

Mohammed said the latest strategy being employed by the purveyors of fake news was to attribute to top government officials, improbable statements capable of destabilising the polity, causing tension and threatening the country’s unity.

“This is why we are appealing to Nigerians not to ever engage in a knee-jerk reaction to any news, and to subject every information to a very serious scrutiny by checking with security agencies and government spokespersons,” he said.

The minister described the fake news phenomenon as “the scourge of our times”, noting that it would “probably get worse in the months ahead”

He, therefore, called on all Nigerians to be very vigilant so that fake news purveyors do not succeed in their quest to sow the seeds of chaos and confusion.

He appealed to the traditional media, which has a reputation to protect, to join the campaign against the purveyors of fake news.

Fed Govt begins NEEDS Assessment of public polytechnics

The Federal Government yesterday moved to end the strike by polytechnic lecturers with the beginning of the NEEDS Assessment of 66 states and federal polytechnics.

Carrying a NEEDS assessment of the polytechnics is one of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), which has been on strike since October 4, last year.

At the beginning of the exercise at the Kaduna Polytechnic, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on NEEDS Assessment of Public Polytechnics and a director in the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Fatimah Ahmed said the government was determined to address the needs of public polytechnics.

She said the committee would carry stakeholders along in discharging its assignment.

According to her, rather than ask the various institutions to submit the lists of their problems and needs to Abuja, the committee decided to visit the institutions because “we know that you may have some complaints we must listen to”.

The committee chair noted that many polytechnics had complained of lack of equipment, infrastructural decay, lack of adequate teaching staff, inadequate laboratories, lecture halls, students’ accommodation, among others.

She said 15 teams had been set up from the Presidential committee to visit all the polytechnics, liaise with stakeholders and carry out on-the-spot assessment of information supplied by the polytechnics.

Hajia Ahmed said: “We are going to all the polytechnics in the country, no matter where they are. We will speak to all the stakeholders with a view to coming out with adequate information on how to address the issues affecting the institutions.”

Fed Govt urged to assist entrepreneurs

The Federal Government has been urged to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurs.

The President, Association of MicroEntrepreneursof Nigeria(AMEN), Prince Saviour Iche, said broad-based regulatory reform is also needed to create a more favourable policy environment for innovation

Speaking with The Nation, Iche said entrepreneurs are agents of economic growth.

He called on the government to initiate proposals to reduce barriers to new and potentially high-growth businesses.

He canvased an end to preferential treatment for foreign investors. He said the government should unify laws governing domestic and foreign investment and create a level playing field for domestic and foreign companies.

Iche also urged the government to launch policies and obtain tangible results in economic reform this year.

He said to keep the economy running within “a well-defined reasonable range,” the country will continue to use the strategy that helped it to maintain growth momentum last year.

According to him, the nation is still facing pressure on growth, inflationary risk and difficulty in industrial upgrading.

H e said the government should improve efforts on reforming and in fine-tuning its macro-economic policies, adding that the association is ready to launch a massive campaign to sensitise Nigerians on the importance of entrepreneurship as a way to reduce unemployment.

  • Fed Govt closes bid for NIPP assets today

Fed Govt closes bid for NIPP assets today

The Federal Government will today stop receiving bids for the 10 power plants being built under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP). The project are being supervised by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).

NDPHC Managing Director James Olotu said yesterday in Lagos during the commissioning of some injection substations in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, that he would ensure that due process, transparency and fair play are followed.

He said: “Tomorrow (today) I will be in Abuja to close the bid for those 10 power plants at 5.00pm. I will be there to ensure that all the rules and regulations for fair play and transparency needed are followed, to further ensure that the bidding process is not compromised.

“When we close the bid, we will be able to know how many people truly indicated that they want to buy. After that, we will give the bids to an evaluation committee, which comprises technical people, engineers, lawyers, accountants, representatives of the World Bank, among others.

“The process also will be monitored by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), representatives of the Ministry of Power and NDPHC.”

The committee members, he said would work on the evaluation for the next two weeks. After the evaluation, the report will be taken to the NDPHC Board and owners of the companies. Upon their approval, the technical bid will be opened.

Olotu said the technical bid would ensure that the intending investors had ompetence, to manage the power plants they want to buy and not to buy and strip the assets thereafter and take the money away. After the technical bid, the financial bid, which is to ensure that the investors have the financial power to equip and sustain quality and efficient power delivery after takeover will be opened.

“We expect to finish everything by the end of January next year and announce the preferred bidders. We will give them about six months to gather all the money to pay for the assets they offered to buy,” he said.

Olotu said he had fruitful discussions with the new owners of Eko Distribution Company (DISCO), – West Power and Gas Company, and Sahara Energy, the majority shareholders in Ikeja DISCO.

“Our interactions during the meeting showed clearly that they are people of focus, determined to improve power efficiency in Nigeria. They are prepared to invest more in buying the right equipment that will ensure that power gets to the people, that is, the customers that they want to provide power for.

“We were able to join hands with them to commission four power injection substations in Eko and two in Ikeja. It was a wonderful interface and coming out with us made them see practically what is obtainable in the field and the challenges that they have to begin to worry about and to bring solutions to,” he added. Unlike the PHCN assets, 80 per cent shares of the NIPP plants will be sold.

The projected combined generation of NIPP assets is 5153.1megawatt (MW). Road-shows were conducted in Nigeria, United States, United Kingdom and some Asian countries to meet with prospective investors early this year.
