  • Fed Poly in Ado-Ekiti shut indefinitely

The Federal Polytechnic in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, was shut indefinitely yesterday, following a violent protest by students over the death of two of their colleagues.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that trouble began on campus late Friday when the two students reportedly complained of malaria.

They were said to have been rushed to the health centre for treatment, but their condition worsened and they died on Saturday.

In a statement, the Registrar, Mrs. Sade Adediran, announced the closure of the school.

She did not confirm if any student actually died at the polytechnic’s health centre, which was said to have trigger the protest.

The statement warned that any student found on campus after the closure would be apprehended and made to face the consequences.

NAN gathered from campus sources that the students, on learning that their colleagues had died, mobilised and burnt the health centre.

Besides destroying property, students blocked roads leading to the institution and obstructed traffic.

One of the students, who asked not to be mentioned, condemned the attitude of the polytechnic’s authorities on their welfare and well-being.

He alleged that the only drug available at the health centre was paracetamol.

According to him, paracetamol was also given to the two students, instead of effective malaria drugs or injection.

  • That anomaly at Fed Poly, Auchi

That anomaly at Fed Poly, Auchi

SIR: The attention of the President is hereby drawn to the 25 newly inaugurated federal polytechnic governing council chairmen. It is observed that none of the chairmen of the governing councils presides over the polytechnic located in their state except that of Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Edo State. The chairman of the governing council of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Chief Micheal Oloko, is from Akoko- Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. He hails from Igarra town, which is about 16 kilometers away from Auchi where the polytechnic is located.

Is the appointment done in error or deliberate? For instance, Dr. J.I Okar from Benue State is the Chairman Governing Council of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Afikpo, Ebonyi State. Chief Edwin Ogunbor from Edo State is the chairman of Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State. The same is true of  Yalwa Tahir from Bauchi State WHO is the Chairman of Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Bali. Taraba State.

Prof. Eddy Olanipekun from Ekiti State is the chairman Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State while Dr. Ibrahim Liman Sifawa from Sokoto State is the chairman Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State.

From all indications, no governing council chairman is from the state where the federal polytechnic he is overseeing is located.

This anomaly is coming at a time when the Federal Polytechnic Auchi community is yet to understand the rationale behind the appointment of the acting rector for the institution. The appointment – which is akin to imposition – defies all reasoning in the sense that 26 candidates went for the rector’s interview in July 2016 but in a fiat, one of the 26 candidates was appointed as acting rector at the expiration of former deputy rector academics. The man imposed was neither a deputy rector nor was he a dean or even member of management team of the polytechnic. People see this as an attempt to introduce autocracy and politicking in to our educational system in an era when autonomy and merit should be the prevailing order. The tertiary institution should not be treated as a fiefdom of political compensation where autocracy prevails.

I humbly call on President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the matter as efforts are on by some vested interests to abandon the credible interview conducted last year by the federal ministry of education and impose an indigene that does not merit the position through the current chairman of the governing council (also an indigene of Edo State). Merit and existing rules should be allowed to prevail in our educational system for the overall progress and development of the country.

  • Fed Poly, Ede denies discriminating against Osun indigenes

The management of Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, has denied  allegations that the institution discriminates against indigenes of the state in  employment and admission of students.

Dr Arthur Aja, the Deputy Rector (Academics) of the polytechnic, made the statement in respect of a petition against the school before the State House of Assembly Committee on Education in Osogbo.

Aja said contrary to claims in the petition, 65 per cent of staff of the polytechnic were from Osun.

He said the Federal Character Commission queried the institution for not reflecting Federal Character Principle in its employment.

“We were even lambasted by the Federal Character Commission for not reflecting the Federal Character Principle in the employment,  that is, we have more staff from the state than other states,” he added.

Aja said it would be unfair for anyone to say that the majority of the staff in the institution were non-indigenes of Osun.

Responding to issues on the admission of students, Dr Caroline Adewusi, the Deputy Rector (Administration), said the institution usually followed the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board admission guidelines.

Adewusi said there was no time a qualified indigene of the state applied for admission to the polytechnic and was rejected.

Mr Abiodun Awolola, the Deputy Chairman of the Committee, said the management of the institution was  summoned based on a petition written against it on employment and admission.

Awolola said the explanation given by the management was clear but asked the school to avail the assembly with its staff nominal role. (NAN)
