Azeez said they were among the lucky few to be offered admission to acquire Nigeria Certicate in Education (NCE) and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) in the college, hence, they should be shinning models of exemplary behaviour and dedicated to academic excellence and be pride of their parents and the country.

He said they should utilise  the new learning infrastructure and facilities which include, new Science Laboratories, Technical workshop, Fine and Applied Studios, Agricultural Laboratories, Lecture rooms and Lecture Theatre and renovated Hostels.

The provost urged the students to ensure they acquire skills at the Centre for Vocational Technical and Entrepreneurship Development (CeVTED) in which they would get extra certificate.

Azeez said the recent enactment of the Federal Colleges of Education (FCEs) establishment Act No. 43 of 2023, is an effort to restructure the colleges of education system to  enable the colleges run both NCE and degree courses in teacher education.

“The amendment of the Act introduces the need to rejig the academic and administrative operations of the colleges of education.

A key consideration of the provisions of the new Act is the expansion of the core mandate of the colleges of education (COEs) beyond the award of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) to include the award of Bachelor degrees in specialised education disciplines. This new innovation is christened the Dual Mode, which depicts the autonomy granted colleges of education to train teachers at both NCE and Degree levels in specialised teacher education programmes,” he said.

With TETFund sponsorship, many academic staff of our college are pursuing higher degrees in both local and foreign universities. The entire cost of their academic programme is funded by TETFund. This has helped our college so much. We have more than 50 doctorate degree holders in various fields, who invest their knowledge in the quality of teaching in the college,” she said.

U.S. varsity donates digital library to Enugu college

THE Information and Communication Technology (ICT) University, United States  has donated a digital library to the Federal College of Education (FCE), Eha-Amufu in Enugu State.

The e-library has over 1.2 million educational materials in various academic fields, including journals of national and international standards.

Speaking during its inauguration, the varsity’s Board of Trustees President, Prof W. A. Mbarika, said the donation came through a partnership with the ICT University.

He noted that there was an interaction between the college’s Provost, Prof Benjamin Mbah, who sought the varsity’s assistance for the college’s staff and students to boost their reaserch and learning.

Mbarika, the founding Editor-in- Chief of African Journal of Information System, said with the advent of ICT, the era of building huge library stocked with books and journals was gone.

He stressed that the value of a library could not be determined by  the largeness of its building, but rather its capability to provide the knowledge needed for research anfd learning.

He said: “The world is changing and moving faster. Even if our universities, colleges and other tertiary institutions refuse to move forward, the world will continue to move ahead and ICT is a major driver. Some institutions would prefer to build huge library with many books that could easily collapse into a small computer. These days, e-library is the easiest way to acquire knowledge and every institution should embrace it.”

He added that the library named after Mbah, was an extension of the relationship between the ICT University and the college. Mbarika observed that the university had established other areas of collaboration with the college, including opportunities on research and grants for academics, as well as diplomas and degrees in computer-related programmes.

He urged staff and students to make good use of the e-library.

According to him, no institution has the financial resources to fund research alone without partnering  an agency that would give financial aid.

Mbarika pointed out that the ICT varsity’s interest was to promote good use of collaborative facilities.

He said: “Every year, we select, at least, five researchers from all over the world, including Nigeria, to be funded by our agencies. We want FCE in Eha-Amufu and other institutions in Nigeria to be part of the beneficiaries. Already, Covenant University is one those research institutions we are funding.”

He hailed the ICT Unit of the college, headed by Mr Sam Onyeidu, and Librarian, Dr Ezekiel Omeje, for their efforts toward making the e-library a reality.

Mbah expressed delight that the e-library was completed and opened  two years after its foundation was laid. He noted that the e-library was opened when the college was concluding collaboration with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to commence degree programmes.

Thanking Mbarika for his effort to  the project, Mbah appealed for further assistance for the establishment of the Visual Laboratory, which, he said, would boost the e-library and make ICT programmes in the college complete.

He urged staff to make the e-library their companion to meet up with the global standard in research, teaching and learning.

The Registrar, Mrs Ngozi Nnebedum, asked the ICT University to assist the college in delivering ICT-compliant knowledge to students.

Mbarika was accompanied to the event by a Nigerian, Foluso Ayeni,  an Assistant Professor, and Director of International Linkages and Collaborations at the ICT University.

  • Community seeks varsity status for college

Community seeks varsity status for college

Members of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET) in Umunze, Anambra State, have held their inaugural meeting. They toured the insitution after the meeting. EMEKA ONWUDINJO reports.

LAST week’s Governing Council meeting of Federal College of Education, Technical, (FCET) in Umunze, Anambra State, was spectacular. It was the inaugural.

Apart from focusing on the state of facilities in the institution, they also, thereafter, toured the campus.

But what they did not discuss –  the institution’s upgrade into a university- came up during a visit to the monarch of Umunze, Igwe Promise Ezeh, who urged them to support the call for the elevation of the college to become the first University of Education in the Southeast.

Igwe Ezeh said: “I can tell you that every member of the town is interested in the progress of the school, and the management has maintained cordial relationship with members of the host community. We have seen the college becoming one of best in the country in terms of academic performance and teachers’training. This is why we want the college to be upgraded to a university.”

The traditional ruler pleaded with the council to consider appointing a qualified indigene of the host community to succeed the college provost, Prof Josephat Ogbuagu, noting that nobody from the area been a provost of the college since its inception in 1989.

Responding, the Council Chairman Mr Ibrahim Radda, assured the traditional ruler that the selection of the next provost would follow due process, pointing out that Ogbuagu’s successor should be ready to work with the council to address olege’s challenges.

Earlier, he said the tour was prompted by members’ desire to ascertain the state of the college’s infrastructure, promising that the council would consolidate on the gains recorded by the college management led by Prof Josephat Ogbuagu.

After the tour, Raddah said council members were thrilled by the management’s achievements, claiming that the facilities were better than those of other Federal Government colleges. He praised the provost for his “giant stride”.

A member of the council, Hon. Uche Anakor, said there had been improvement in the institution in the last three years. He said most of the council members did not oppose the proposal for the college’s elevation to a university when it was raised during their meeting. He praised the college’s degree programme with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

He said: “With the state of the college facilities, the council will make case for its upgrade to a university because it has the personnel and good location.  And since the college has started to run degree programmes in affiliation with UNIZIK, there will be no hindrance to its quest to be upgraded to a university.

“We will approach the federal government and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for funding and build more structures. If the college must be upgraded to a university, there is need for more classrooms, auditoriums and other necessary facilities to be in place.

“We are going to throw our weight behind that proposal and see what we can do to assist the school by looking out for necessary funding of these projects. To upgrade from a college to a university requires a lot of processes.”

Anakor lauded the cordial relationship between the college and the host community. He praised  Ogbaugu for providing leadership, which he said, transformed the college to a centre of excellence.

He said: “I think the provost has done so well. If it is possible to give him a third term, I am sure most of the council members would strongly support it. Under him, the students’ population grew and he embarked on projects that improved the rating of the institution.”

Other members of the council on the tour included Mrs Helen Abdu of Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Paul Onochie, Mr Edmond Nkalu, Dr Jane Madichie, Dr Christopher Ugwuogo, and Secretary to the Council, Mr Augustine Udensi.
