  • IPOB: FG commences separate trial of Kanu’s co-defendants

The Federal Government Tuesday commenced the trial of four men earlier charged with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu on offence of treasonable felony.

The four, some of who are IPOB members – Bright Chimezie, Chidiebere Onwidiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi – were yesterday arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja on a three-count amended charge.

Upon request by parties, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako agreed to a separate trial of the four owing to the sudden disappearance of Kanu, who was earlier listed as first defendant in the old charge.

At their arraignment yesterday, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the amended charge, following which the prosecution lawyer, Shuiabu Labaran sought a brief adjournment to enable him open his case.

Defence lawyers objected to a brief adjournment. The lawyers said they were served with the amended charge the previous day and required sufficient time to consult with their clients.

They also sought the transfer of the clients from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to Kuje prison, Abuja.

Ruling, Justice Nyako allowed the defence lawyers one hour to discuss with the clients in court. She said the trial will not be secret one as being misinterpreted, but that it was only the identity of witnesses that will be protected from the public.

The judge adjourned to Thursday for the prosecution to open its case.

The three counts, to which Chimezie, Onwidiwe, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi pleaded, read:

“That you, Bright Chimezie, Chidiebere Onwidiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Nnamdi Kanu (at large),  in 2014 and 2015, in Nigeria and London, conspired to broadcast on Radio Biafra monitored in Enugu and other areas within the jurisdiction of the court, for states in the South-East and South-South zones, and other communities in Kogi and Benue states, to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a view to constitute same into a Republic of Biafra, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap. C77 of 2004.

“That you, Bright Chimezie and one Nnamdi Kanu, now at large, between March and April, 2015, imported into Nigeria and kept in Ubulusiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, within the jurisdiction of the court, a radio transmitter known as TRAM 50L, concealed in a container of used household items, which you declared as used household items, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 47 (2) (a) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C77 of 2004.

  • Niger Delta leaders squandered our resources – Youths

Youths from the nine states of the Niger Delta region,on Monday, accused leaders from the area of squandering trillions of naira that accrued to the region over the years.

They insisted that the selfish tendencies of the leaders and their perennial failures plunged the region into the present untold hardship, poverty and underdevelopment.

The youths, under the auspices of the Pan Niger Delta Youth Leadership Forum (PANDLEAF) said poverty in the region was curious, unthinkable, unfortunate and worrisome when compared to the amount of money appropriated to the region by the Federal Government, state governments and  intervention agencies.

The President, PANDLEAF, Mr. Richard Akinaka, spoke after meeting with Presidents of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Urhobo Youth Council (UYC) and Itsekiri Youth Council (IYC) as part of his ongoing engagements with ethnic youth leaders in the region.

Akinaka said PANDLEAF met with Eric Omare of IYC; Ahbateyiniro Weyinmi of Itsekiri, and Festus Igherebuo of Urhobo.

He said the meeting was convened to instill a renewed sense of responsibility among youths in the region.

He lamented that the region had nothing to show for the years of huge budgetary appropriations from the federal government, agencies and states.

Akinaka said: “For instance, after the first two to three years of the establishment the Niger Delta Development Commission, the agency has perpetually become an instrument in the hands of those who control the region from Abuja to finance elections.

“Leadership is not given but it is a responsibility taken and as such we have to wake up now. Our region is not without resources or institutions, but our region only lacks accountable leadership.

“The major problem of the region is that of perennial leadership failure. We are embarking on this engagement with ethnic youth leaders in the region to instil a renewed sense of responsibility to peace, harmony and common development.

“We are here to talk to ourselves to promote ethnic harmony, peace as a generation, to advance a common economic, political and social agenda through objective political participation of youths.”

He stressed the need for peace among the various ethnic groups in the region, Akinaka said language should not be a barrier to the peaceful co-existence of the ethnicities.

He said the Niger Delta remained one people with a common destiny, adding that the crises in the past were all functions of failures of leadership.

He observed that though militant activities in the past were aimed at securing attention of the Federal Government to the marginalisation of Niger Delta, the phase caused the region more woes.

He said the phase caused the relocation of economic activities from the region to the western parts of the country.

He insisted that the region must take deliberate steps to advance peace to cause those companies to come back to the Niger Delta.

Akinaka also explained that the ethnic youth leadership engagement exercise was not a political movement but the gathering of youths, irrespective of political affiliations.

He said: “The engagement is not about political parties but about the collective peace, unity and progress of the region.

“Young people who have been privileged to be part of government must not see those privileges as rewards for followership to advance personal interests but see such opportunities as platforms to add value to society by demonstrating capacity.”

Also speaking, a member of the National Executive of PANDLEAF,  Dr. Selekaye Victor-Ben,  noted that the poor leadership problem identified was caused by the imposition of political leaders on the people.

Victor-Ben said: “Most of the young men imposed on us have failed because they listen to the dictates and old ideology of their sponsors.

“We must unite and stand up for peace and development in the region. The youths of the present Niger Delta must come together and uplift the unity and cohesive development of the region.”

In his remarks, the IYC President, Eric Omare, said the youth must know that those who benefited from the ills of the past would resist plans to effect change.

He asked the youths to be ready to take the challenge to liberate the region from impostors, bad and corrupt leaders and never-do-wells.

  • FG alleges GenCos plans to disrupt power supply for politics

The Minister of Power Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola Monday  revealed that he received reports on plans emanating from some secret meetings of some electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) to disrupt power supply because of political gains.

His words: “Let me say it very clearly to some of these people that I get reports on some of the clandestine meetings they hold with the view to disrupt power supply for political capital.”

He dropped the hint that the power firms have dragged the federal government to court over its regulation, stressing that the suit coming at the time that there is increase in power supply is an indication of the intention of the plaintiff to blackmail the government and hold the citizenry hostage.

He wondered “whether the period when this sector is now making progress does not suggest an intention to blackmail government and to hold the citizens hostage?”

The former Lagos state government, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria vowed to defend government’s position in the law court, where he has lived all his life.

He made the disclosure at the 25th Monthly Power Sector meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

The power firms had sued the Federal Government for discriminatory treatment against them and the gas suppliers. They claimed that the government’s was scheming to give Azura Power West Africa Limited and Accugas Limited to disadvantage of the entire power sector.

The representatives of the GenCos in the suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja, are Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Transcorp Power Limited, Egbin Power Plc, and Northsouth Power Limited.

Fashola however noted that only the power firms tabled their complaints to the ministry and dragged the government to the court only a week after that was not sufficient for the government to look into their grievances and react.

He urged them to be fair in good conscience to the court of law and court of public opinion about the rival firms that they complained of. The minister submitted that the other new company has a partial risk guarantee in its contract which the plaintiffs do not process.

Fashola tasked the plaintiff to be ready to tell the citizens how they felt first when others groups went to court to stop the implementation of tariffs approved by NERC.

He said “I was their supporter then asking Nigerians to bear with the tariff. You must explain to the court of public opinion whether they went to court before this government approved for them the N701billion payment assurance guarantee which enables to to receive payment on their monthly power bills.

“When they are in that court, they must also tell the court that they are indebted to gas companies and to their banks because they were receiving less than 50% of their bills. And in doing so, they must tell the court that they now receive 80% of their bills from less than 50% because the Buhari’s government intervened with the assurance guarantee.

“They must also tell the court when they get there or while they are there that unlike before when they were paid in Naira, from money that was received from international customers, we sell power to Niger Republic, Chad, Niger and Togo, under an international arrangement. They must tell the court that they are now receiving payments in dollars instead of in the Naira, which used to be the case.

“They must also tell the court when they get their and also tell the court of public opinion that that there is a new GenCos  getting paid 100% while they are getting 80%. And they must explain to the court that the reason is that that new GenCos has a partial risk guarantee in its contract and they do not. They was the contract they signed.”

But the unsaid in and the Genesis of the veneer of hatred in the sector was the introduction of the mini-grid regulation that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission presented to the ministry last year making legal ways for competitive participation in power generation instead of the monopoly -like system that held the sector down for years.

Yesterday however, Fashola recalled that the of privatization of the sector was not meant to displace the hold monopoly of government with a new monopoly of private businessmen.

He added that there was already progress emanating from the implementation of the regulation p, adding that “So if those people bother to look around them and they look at roof tops across Nigeria, you will see increased number of solar panel.

“And the Nigerian Mini Grid Regulation we have issued encouraged this to happen more and more and it will not stop. So for those who want to produce solar one megawatt and below we now have a regulation that allows.”

Fashola presented the Meter Asset Provider 2018 Regulation to the State Governor, Emmanuel Udom, making Akwa Ibom the first state to receive a copy of the regulation of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He recalled that the government pursued an out of court judgement in a case that lasted from 2013 to 2017 to get N39billion from a liability of N119billion.

He said that negotiations were still ongoing for fundings for rural electrification, mini-grid and DisCos distribution expansion financing that government hopes to complete before the end of the year.

According to him, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has continued its wheeling capacity, upgrade of its substations in partnership with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.

He reported to the stakeholders at the meeting that the Calabar substation has been completed and ready to be energized: Uyo substation is already completed and ready  to be energized in a matter of days. He said that substations in Karu, Nassarawa, Abeokuta among others have been completed and now in service.

Fashola said it was no longer news that the sector has reached a 7,000mw generation capacity and now has 5000mw distribution capacity.

He broke the news that in the last month the ministry met with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, DiscOs and GenCos and TCN on how to implement the eligible customer policy and increase connectivity to the 2,000mw now available.

He said that the meeting was productive and “report reaching me is that is what is outstanding is agreement on the tariff that will be paid on the eligible customer.”

Speaking the NERC commissioner, Dafe Agenife, who presented the Meter Asset Provider 2018 Regulation to the minister, said that issues of availability of metering and estimated billings were recurring where the commission went to.

He said that the commission had consultations with different stakeholders, agency and consumers on the regulation.

He submitted that the findings was that NERC could not leave the task to the DisCos alone as other investors must come on stream, hence the Meter Asset Provider Regulation.

The commissioner Before you today is the NERC Meter Asset Provider 2018,” adding that four years after privatization customers are still complaining which necessitated the regulation to have independent people approved by NERC and contracted by the DisCos  to bridge the metering gap.

In bridging the gap, he said, customers will now have the option of self-financing, obtains meters from the asset providers to pay the metering service charge for a period of 10 years.

The meter asset providers will also ensure that the meters are maintained 48hours should anything goes wrong with the meters, he added.

According to him, it is estimated to produce an investment of over N200billion in the next three years in the industry.

The regulation, he said would create jobs owing to its 30% local content initiative.

Reps to FG: Rescue Dapchi, Chibok Girls

The House of Representatives Thursday called on the Federal Government to rescue the recently abducted school girls from Government, Girls Technical College, Dapchi, in Yobe State.

The lawmakers arrived at the resolution after a long deliberation on this year’s International Women’s Day, through a motion brought by Chairperson, House Committee on Women Affairs, Hon. Stella Ngwu (PDP Enugu) urging the Federal Government  to secure freedom for all kidnapped school girls in the country.

They also enjoined the authorities to secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls and provide security for school children and women in the country.

Lawmakers like Lynda Ikpeazu, PDP, Anambra; Aisha Dukku, APC, Gombe; Garba Tchede, APC, Taraba; and Gudaji Kazaure, APC, Jigawa all called on the government to provide legal framework for gender parity and support Nigerian women in the quest for gender mainstreaming.

This was as a coalition of Civil Society Organisations including Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNCD) and Our Mumu Don Do Movement called on the National Assembly to probe the incident.

“As representatives of the people, the time has come for the National Assembly to take every action that can spur the executive and the nation to act.

“The National Assembly is invited to conduct a powerful investigation to unravel whatever conspiracy has been alleged so far, and the circumstances surrounding how over hundred girls will be kidnapped in a ‘war zone’ without them being spotted, or meeting police/ military check point.,” the coalition said in a statement by Ariyo- Dare Aroye and Raphael Adebayo, who represented the CSOs.

The Nigerian Military is conducting Operation Lafiya Dole, in the Morth East with Yobe State being part of the area of strategic operations. But the military was  allegedly withdrawn from Dapchi 21 days, before the school girls’ abduction.

Some of the parents of the 110 students abducted from the Government, Girls Technical College, Dapchi, could not hold back the tears at the gate of the National Assembly yesterday.

The parents, both male and female who wore black shirts with inscription, “We are Dapchi People”, said since the abduction of their children, there has been no meaningful contact by government officials on the issue and prayed the government to help rescue their children.

One of the parents Yahaya Taributu, a male who told The Nation that three of his daughters were taken by the abductors, said the abduction was because of the laxity and incompetence on the part of the security forces.

He said: “Government should go and bring back our daughters” he said, adding that that could not understand why the military was withdrawn from Dapchi 21 days, before the abduction.

“We don’t know why government had to withdraw the army, but we believe that government knows better. We cannot, and will not rest over this matter, until we meet four eyes with our daughters”.

A mother, Aisha Alhaji Bukar, whose daughter one of those captured by the Boko Haram insurgents, could not stop weeping, saying her daughter’s absence has made her a sorrowful mother.

Also, Aisha Kundili Bukar, whose daughter was also kidnapped and Adamu Gashuama, a father, whose daughter was a victim, said there was no visible security in the town.

“Even now, if you go to Dapchi, you can carry mothers, fathers and all their children into captivity unchallenged. Dapchi is not safe,” Aisha Kundili Bukar said.

…approves 250 technologies ready for up take

The Federal Government, through the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) have developed technologies that will not only help the country fight malnutrition but manage sickle cell anemia in the country.

The product, called Nutrocituca are two legumes with Nigerian based raw materials which has been successful so far with children livingwith sickle cell disease and have prevented them from going into crises.

On managing malnutrition, biscuits have been produced that meets the recommended diatery allowance needs of children from ages 5 to 12 to prevent malnutrition and is being mass produced by NASCO biscuits.

Director General/ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) FIIRO, Prof. Gloria Elemo made the revelation during the FIIRO day celebration at the Technology and Innovation week in Abuja.

She stated, “Today we are showing the automation of process technology and indigenous technologies that have been developed, we have the automation od the kunu plant, where you can have kunu that can stay off the shelve without refrigeration for about two years, it has export potentials we have automated it, so also Zobo has been automated.

“The program now and our initiative is that all our processed technology will now be automated to industrial large scale, it can be handled from the small scale, medium and large scale.

“We are the core of the agricultural value chain, if you produce and you are unable to process for optimum utilization then you would have been making a mockery of agriculture, we play a core part in the agricultural value chain. We have R&D results that can handle all the agricultural  raw materials in the country, even waste management of agricultural products.

FG `ll empower more farmers to boost food production – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the Federal Government will empower more farmers to boost food production in the country.

Mohammed made the assertion on Sunday at the Government House, Birnin-Kebbi, when he paid courtesy call Gov. Abubakar Bagudu during his two-day visit to the state.

The minister said that the agricultural revolution in the state had projected Nigeria as a food producing nation.

“Due to the agricultural revolution, the number of farmers empowered across the country has increased from five million to over 12 million within two years of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

“Our detractors will not believe what this government has achieved; that is why we decided to come to different villages where farming is taking place to tell the whole world our story,” he said.

In his remarks governor Atiku Bagudu told the minister and his entourage that apart from the success recorded in agriculture, most especially in mass rice production, he said their is need for federal government to invest more in other crops like Maize and Soya beans.

The governor further said the State success story in rice can also be achieved in other farm produce, which he said will go along way in boosting the economy, and food security of the country.

Bagudu told the minister and his entourage that apart from the success recorded in agriculture, the state was blessed with different cultural festivals like Argungu Fishing Festival, which he said will be revived  very soon, Rigatta festival of Yauri Emirate, Uhola Festival in Zuru, and Hottungo festival In suru.

All the festival he said are been celebrated annually to promote  tourism and generate more revenue to the state.

  • IGP, DSS, EFCC want court to allow search of Wike’s properties

IGP, DSS, EFCC want court to allow search of Wike’s properties

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and two Federal Government’s investigating agencies have asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to reject a prayed by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, stopping them from searching his properties.

The investigating agencies are the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The three are listed as respondents in a suit by the River State Governor, seeking among others, to prevent the search of his property and the execution of a search warrant against him by any of the agencies.

The suit was filed last year in the wake of allegation that the governor compromised some electoral officials during the rerun elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A number of INEC officials, from whom funds were allegedly recovered, are currently on trial before the Federal High Court in relation to their conduct during the River State rerun election.

Arguing IGP’s position Thursday, David Igbodo urged the court to dismiss Wike’s suit on the grounds that it was based on “mere speculation.”

Igbodo, a lawyer with the Nigeria Police Force, said: “The application is speculative because in the first instance, there is no search warrant attached to it.

“The only exhibit attached is the interview granted by Wike himself in which he made allegations that the police wants to search his house in Abuja.

“He made the allegation, but he did not attach the search warrant to prove it. Assuming without conceding that the police obtained a search warrant to search the Rivers State Governor’s house in Abuja; the question is:  Can the police execute the search warrant without requiring his presence?

“The question has been answered by the Supreme Court and the answer is yes. The police can effectively do that without requiring his presence.

“So the government house of Rivers State in Abuja can be searched without the Governor’s presence, as there are security men there that can witness the search.”

Igbodo further submitted that the law allowed the police to gather evidence and investigate officials who had immunity adding that a search warrant was a process of obtaining evidence during investigation.

He admitted that the governor enjoys immunity by virtue of the provision of the Constitution.

Igbodo proceeded to argue that, the enjoyment of the constitutionally granted immunity by a governor cannot protect him from being investigated.

He added that during the process of investigation, investigators were allowed by law to gathered evidence against such a governor.

DSS’ lawyer, O. Atoyebi, who argued in similar vein, urged the court to dismiss the suit.

He contended that the suit was intended by the governor to prevent the service (DSS) from performing its statutory functions.

Lawyer to the EFCC, Mrs Elizabeth Alabi argued that hewr client was not a necessary party in the case.

Mrs Alabi, who urged the court to dismiss the suit, argued that the EFCC has no business in the suit and was wrongfully joined.

She prayed the court to award N100, 000 in compensation for his client, against Wike.

Lawyer to the governor, Sylva Ogwemoh (SAN) noted that the essence of the suit was the interpretation of a section of the constitution.

Ogwuemoh said: “The focal point of our summons is the interpretation of Section 308 of the Constitution as it relates to search warrant.

“A search warrant is undoubtedly a process of court and if that is the case, there is a breach of the absolute immunity that Section 308 confers on the plaintiff (Wike).”

He argued that under Section 308 of the Constitution the execution of a search warrant required the presence of the person to which the section applies and who enjoys immunity, and in this case, Wike, before the property could be searched.

Ogwuemoh while faulting Igbodo’s argument argued that the IGP’s lawyer’s argument that despite Section 308, the police was with the discretion to search the government’s house in the governor’s absence was against the law.

On Igbodo’s argument that the applicant failed to attach the warrant in question,  Ogwuemoh argued that since the suit only seeks the interpretation of a legal provision, there was no need to attach a warrant to the application.

After listening to partied, Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned to May 9 for judgment.

In the suit filed in June 2017, Wike, among other reliefs, wants a declaration that by virtue of the provisions of Section 308 of the Constitution, the IGP, the EFCC and the DSS cannot apply for, obtain, issue or execute any court process compelling his presence.

He also wants the court to determine: “Whether the defendants can by the combined effect of Section 308 of the Constitution and Sections 149 and 150 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, apply for, obtain, issue or in any manner or form effectively execute a search warrant at the residence of Wike in Abuja or any of his residences without his physical presence in the course of the execution of such search warrant.”

  • FG saves N4.5 trillion from high profile cases

FG saves N4.5 trillion from high profile cases

The Federal Government on Wednesday disclosed that it has saved over N4.5 trillion from high profile cases prosecuted by the Ministry of Justice between 2015 and 2017.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami briefed State House correspondents at the end of about seven hours Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was with the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello.

According to Malami, his Ministry presented its score card to Council in the last two and a half years.

He said “In respect of Federal Ministry of Justice what was presented to the Council today is the score card from 2015 to 2017

“We presented a score card as to cases both civil, criminal that were prosecuted by the Federal Ministry of Justice and their implications as to savings that were done for the government commencing from 2015 to the present time.

“Fundamentally arising from the cases that were conducted by the Federal ministry of Justice, the Ministry has succeeded in saving the government around N4.5 trillion relating to the claims that were presented in respect of these cases which were indeed conducted and concluded.” he

Continuing, the Minister said “The Federal Government has put in place a committee saddled with the responsibilities of coming up with policies and strategies that will ease off congestion of prisons.

“Over 70 percent of the inmates are awaiting trials there are sizeable number that couldn’t afford to pay limited fine that have been imposed by them arriving from their convictions.

“There are those awaiting trials that have never seen the court room for over five years and above and indeed there are multiple legislation that are before the national assembly that are intended to support the decongestion of prison formation process.” he said

He said that another area the Ministry presented its score card was the ongoing prosecution of Boko Haram cases.

On Boko Haram suspected terrorists ongoing trial, he said that the total number of convictions so far is 255 and those discharged is 737.

He said “We presented a position as to the number of cases that were prosecuted, number of convictions that were procured and the number of discharges that were made relating to the cases and then made a presentation as to the road maps for the continuation of the process.

“There were other presentations that were made particularly as it relates to plea bargain. There are a lot of pending criminal cases in respect of the accused persons standing trials, who made offers for plea bargain.

“Again there are high profile cases that we made our score card and gave an insight as to their respective positions.

“A presentation was made relating to national prosecution team as it relates to the cases they are expected to prosecute.” he said

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi also disclosed that FEC has approved the construction of the  Ibadan – Kaduna rail lines at the cost of $6.7 billion.

The project, he said, is expected to be completed in three years.

According to him, the contract for the Kaduna to Kano aspect of the rail line was awarded last year.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, also briefed on the progress made based on the recently approved executive order, the national strategy for competitiveness and the entire science and technology innovation road map.

As part of the score card of the Ministry in the past two and half years, he presented new biscuits being produced in conjunction with Nasco Food.

He said “High nutrient density products developed and proposed for inclusion in the current Nigerian School Feeding program will provide at least a third of the desired major macro and micro nutrients requirement stipulated by the World Health organization, Food and Nutrition Board.

“Additionally, the products will be produced by NASCO Foods Limited, Jos that have state-of-the-art processing equipment with vast experience in Food processing, Food Safety and quality for production and supply chain nationwide.

“The developed nutritious products have been tested using Nasco Food processing facilities in Jos and have been found to be technically and economically viable.

“The pupils in the schools in Jos and Lagos where the sensory evaluation and consumer acceptability studies were done showed strong likeness for the products and are ready to consume the products if including in the school feeding program.” he said

On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said that the major projects which were rolled out by his ministry, including the citizens diplomacy program, desk to desk review initiatives and the economic diplomacy innovation, are recording successes.

He also gave score card of his Ministry in the past two and half years to the Council.

He listed the special interventions by the Buhari’s administration for the ministry, foreign missions and embassies to include N16.3 billion, N933 million, N7 billion, $32 million and $28 million.

According to him, all the interventions were made as the President decided that he would not entertain sending Nigerians abroad without the necessary funding.

He said “Special intervention fund to rescue many embassies in several countries of the world. First was in 2016 when the Naira was fluctuating terribly and of course the dollars to our embassies were too low to sustain them.

“We received initially N16.3 billion, and was successfully distributed to all embassies. The second one was N933 million for renovations and other debts released in October, 2017.

“The third was $32 million that were released for critically distressed 65 missions that were in serious debts and crisis. This was approved in November 2017 and we are in the process of distributing to the embassies around the world another one, $28 million and is the process of also being distributed and finally for ministry headquarters, the sum of N7 billion was made.” he said

He added “A lot of the debts and the crisis in our embassies and missions around the world have been building over the last 10 years and Mr. President decided that he will no longer accept the situation where we are sending Nigerians out to represent this country and not given them the resources to be able to carry out their tasks. Hence he made provisions and directed that these funds should be released to them.

“So the situation is still not perfect but this has come in very handily and of course in the interest of transparency we wanted to show how these funds had been disbursed.” he stated

The Minister of FCT disclosed that FEC approved N1.9 billion for road reconstruction of Clinton Drive and N273 million for water treatment chemicals.
