  • Our nine-year-old boy at risk over cut of genitals – Mother

…Says genitals cut out of malice

The nine-year-old boy, whose penis was cut off during an ill-fated circumcision, is suffering excruciating pains and at health risk, his mother, Mrs. Eudora Michael, 35, cried out Monday.

The mother, who spoke at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, said that she and her husband were poor and could not afford the specialized care the baby needed to stay alive.

She said: “Since this sad incident occurred in February this year, we have been running around to raise money. We have borrowed up and down and are in big debt. My husband has gone to the village to gather money but people are not forthcoming.

“People who had given us loan are not willing to give us more when we have not paid what we borrowed.

“We are even surviving at the mercy of doctors who are spending their own money when they see that we are unable to provide the drugs they prescribe, the baby is in pains, always crying he cannot urinate and his bladder is swollen.

“I have to stand near the bed or bend down to breastfeed him so that the pipes connected into his genitals doesn’t shift and go off and further complicate the situation”.

She appealed to the wife of Bayelsa Governor, Dr.Rachael Dickson, and other kind-hearted Nigerians to assist financially with medical bills to save her baby.

She insisted that her husband was jobless and had no means to settle the exorbitant medical cost.

Medical experts at the hospital said the baby lost a lot of blood, but had been stabilised adding that he might be scheduled for corrective plastic surgery to reconstruct the urinary system to enable him pass urine normally.

Michael accused her step-father Mr. Ziworitin Keke, 59, of deliberately cutting off the baby’s penis during circumcision.

The incident occurred at Odenwari, a coastal community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa on February 5.

Michael, a mother of eight children, four male and four female noted that the nine month old Oyintari was her first child to be circumcised by Keke.

She claimed that  Keke ‘did it out of ‘malice’, explaining that the pains caused by the incident was too excruciating for a nine month old boy to bear.

“It is not a mistake at all as it is being speculated. On that day I was asleep and the man sent a message that I should bring my baby for circumcision. My husband is still angry because I didn’t tell him.

“My husband and I had no immediate plan to circumcise our baby that day, because he has been sick since birth. I carried the baby to him and he cut off his genitals completely after checking the length.

“I was disturbed because the baby cried much more than two other babies he had circumcised without complications. When I checked the boy I saw the cut, he said that the penis shrunk inside and will come out after treatment.

“I was not convinced. I knew there was danger and I took my baby to a health centre outside our community at Krokrosei after he told me to leave the baby with him for three weeks,” she said.

But Keke’s cousin and activist, Morris Alagoa, said it was a mistake adding that the old man was popular in the community for his free services.

“He was only trying to help”, Alagoa said adding that it was not true that his cousin was known for chopping off penises during circumcision.

Alagoa said: “The man in question is my cousin and he is like a father to the boy. The incident is like that of a driver with 40 years-experiences having an accident.

“It is really sad and unfortunate that his free services to over 700 children from neighboring communities have been brought into this ugly scenario.

“He is a fisherman and engaged in logging of woods for a living. He is even a physically challenge man that offered circumcision services to the community.”

The police said they were investigating the matter.

  • 15 dead as truck conveying cows, passengers plunges into river

Fifteen persons lost their lives in Adamawa on Sunday when a truck conveying cows and passengers lost control on a bridge and fell into the drying river.

The Adamawa Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the figure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Monday.

Adetunji said that the accident occurred at about 10p.m. on the Ngurore Bridge on Yola-Numan Road.

He said that before the arrival of FRSC personnel at the scene, the victims had been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, and Specialists Hospital, Yola.

Adetunji said that the numbers of injured persons had yet to be ascertained.

“I received a call at about 22:00hours on Sunday that there was a crash on Ngurore Bridge on Yola-Numan Highway.

“On arrival at the scene, we discovered that it was a truck carrying cows and passengers that lost control and fell into the drying river,” the commander told NAN.

According to him, six dead bodies were deposited at the Federal Medical Centre and nine at the Specialists Hospital.

He advised motorists to shun night driving as well as avoid transporting human beings and animals in the same vehicle.

  • Grandfather cuts off 8-months-old genitals in Bayelsa

A 59-year-old man, Mr Ziworitin Keke, has allegedly cut off part of the genitals of his eight-month-old grandson while circumcising the boy at Ondewari, a coastal settlement in Bayelsa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt on Thursday that the baby is currently receiving medical care at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital.

It was learnt that Keke, a well-known `specialist’ in circumcision in the area, almost “chopped off half of the baby’s genitals.”

The father of the infant, Mr Joseph Michael, said his wife took the infant to a health centre following the incident.

“After cutting off my boy’s penis, the man, who is married to my son’s grandmother, told my wife to leave the child with him for at least three weeks so that he could treat him very well.

“But my wife refused because the boy was bleeding and she rushed him to the health centre at Korokorosei, a neigbouring community to us,” he said.

He explained that they were referred to the Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa for specialised medical care, adding that he was in financial distress as he could not afford the cost of treatment.

Michael urged public spirited individuals to come to his aid to save the life of his son.

Reacting to the incident, Mr Alagoa Morris, a human rights activist, told NAN that the incident would have been avoided if government had provided health facilities to rural communities.

“My first concern is with the baby going through the terrifying pain. The man who performed the circumcision is a renowned traditional circumcision expert in the community and even beyond.

“He has successfully carried out the service at no cost to parents for many years including two older brothers of the victim.

“This must have been a mistake. More than 1,000 circumcisions have been performed by him without any complication.

“So, calls for his arrest are misplaced. A lot of residents in the community have no access to medical facilities and they believe and resort to traditional medicine men, traditional birth attendants inclusive.

“It is imperative for the state and local governments to join forces and make orthodox medical service available to rural dwellers in the coastlines and riversides. Only then will the people have a choice,” Alagoa said.

Meanwhile, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Bayelsa has called for the arrest and prosecution of Keke.

Mrs Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, Chairperson of FIDA in the state, who made the call after visiting the victim at the medical centre, said they had petitioned the office of the commissioner of police on the matter.

  • Boy to get penis transplant in Niger

Nine-month-old Buhari Muhammad, whose genital was cut off by his step-mother in June 2016, would undergo his next surgery when he reaches puberty.

Muhammad had his first corrective surgery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Niger, in February.

Mr Suleiman Makusidi, the Head of Medical Unit of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Tuesday that the next surgery would be a penis transplant.

“When the boy reaches puberty and when blood has started flowing through his penis, a transplant will be carried out; the transplant will be carried out either in Nigeria or abroad.

“The corrective surgery that was done in February was to reopen the hole that was created for the boy to pass urine after it was discovered that the hole was closing back.

“ The urinary passage, which was created like that of the female, is a temporary one to enable him pass urine.’’

“The state government is making arrangements on how to bring medical experts to examine the boy and see if the transplant can be done in Nigeria.

“If not, we will look at other options like South Africa or the U.S.

“We are hoping that the transplant will be successful and that it will help his reproductive system because his testicles were cut off alongside his penis; only one testicle was left,” he said.

According to Makusidi, Muhammad will use his penis effectively after a successful transplant.

The Director-General of the agency, Hajiya Mairam Kolo, said the agency was partnering with the Community Training and Empowerment Project, a United Kingdom based NGO, to fast track the transplant process.

“The agency is working toward the final operation.

“The matter is a very sensitive one and there should not be mistake; the transplant will be carried out by experts in that field,’’ she said.

NAN recalls that Muhammad’s genital was cut off by his 17-year-old step mother, Bara’atu Muhammad, when the boy was barely a month old.

The incident occurred in Dafe community in Shiroro Local Government area of Niger in June 2016.

The step-mother had confessed that she took the action because she was jealous and she also wanted to get back at the victim’s mother whom she claimed was always insulting her.

Bara’atu was subsequently remanded in Minna Prison

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, told NAN that the suspect was still in Minna Prison, pending the conclusion of investigations.

According to him, under the Police Criminal Law, the suspect is an adult who is above seven years and therefore can be tried for the offence.

“It is true that a suspected case of Lassa fever had been discovered at the centre with a male patient being its victim.

“But, I want to use this medium to appeal to patients and members of the public to remain calm as necessary steps had been taken to avert the spread of the virus.

“The patient with the suspected case of Lassa fever had been separated from other patients and we are on top of the situation to curtail the spread of the disease,” he said

  • Kogi resident doctors join national protest

Kogi resident doctors join national protest

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, has joined the strike by National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to register their displeasure with the management of Nigeria’s health system.

The ARD President in Lokoja, Dr Kennedy Obohwemu, said on Friday that his members were part and parcel of NARD and were duty bound to comply with the directive.

“NARD directed its members to carry out peaceful protests by wearing black ward coats and conducting rallies at the expiration of the initial ultimatum given to the Federal Government on Jan. 2.

NARD, on Dec. 19, gave the Federal Government up to Jan. 2 to implement the National Health Act, 2014, while asking it to address the lingering issues beleaguering the health sector, especially as it affects resident doctors.

“With due respect to constituted authority in the Federal Ministry of Health, our actions today have become necessary considering the protracted saga and unfathomable quagmire resident doctors across the country find themselves in.

“Apart from the fact that we are following instructions from our national body, we believe it is time to take the bull by the horn and address these persistent problems once and for all.

“Let the whole world know what resident doctors are going through. Our patients deserve the best of healthcare delivery.

“We cannot do that when we, the healthcare providers, are not in the right frame of mind.

“The medical profession is going through the toughest of times in recent years. Our black jackets and black bands symbolize the death of our healthcare delivery system.

“We ask for a resurrection, a revamping of the system, such that the average Nigerian can confidently access quality healthcare at affordable rates.”

Obohwemu lamented the pitiable state of Nigeria’s health system, citing the need for Federal Government to urgently intervene and prevent massive exodus of doctors to the outside world for greener pastures.

“The same hospital one fails to equip today may be the closest hospital that could save one’s life tomorrow.

“NARD demands are not outrageous, but these issues have been neglected for far too long, thus placing the future of the medical profession in jeopardy.

“We need a uniform template for the residency training programme; structural framework must be clearly spelt out in a consistent unbiased manner and applied universally.

“Since enactment in 2014, the National Health Act is yet to be implemented. We want the implementation of July 14th 2016 agreement with government as soon as possible; that is our agitation.

“This legal document provides a framework for the regulation, development and management of a health system and sets standards for rendering health services in Nigeria.

“The Act ensures that patients are given the best of healthcare delivery with availability of health infrastructure, while ensuring that the rights of health care personnel are protected,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the resident doctors carried placards with various inscriptions such as: “We condemn selective implementation of no work, no pay”.

Other inscriptions read: “Equity, fairness and justice”, “Migrate all doctors to IPPIS platforms”,“Residents are pensionable, Pay outstanding arrears”.

“ Skipping is sacrosanct, we stand with NARD”, “Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Government should implement 2014 National Health Act’’, among others.

  • Excessive consumption of catfish can cause cardiovascular diseases — Expert

Excessive consumption of catfish can cause cardiovascular diseases — Expert

A medical practitioner, Dr Arikawe Adeolu, said on Thursday in Abuja that excessive consumption of catfish could increase the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Adeolu, a practitioner at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that catfish contained omega-6 fatty acids, which could increase the level of inflammation in the body.

He added that inflammation was the underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers and diabetes.

He said that although catfish also contained omega-3 fatty acids, which had a lot of health benefits, the ratio of omega-6 was far greater than omega-3 fatty acids.

Adeolu said that this made it necessary for the fish to be consumed in moderation to prevent health complications.

“Catfish is rich in two fatty acids – omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6 fatty acids.

“The omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the concentration of bad cholesterol in the blood stream and increase the concentration of good cholesterol in the blood stream.

“It also helps protect the heart and the cardiovascular system from any form of disease, prevents inflammation within the body and helps reduce the quantity or concentration of inflammatory substances in the body.

“The underlining basis for most cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer disease and many other diseases that we know today, is chronic inflammation, which signifies a long standing inflammation in the body.

“This is where the catfish controversy comes in. A lot of reports have advised against eating it and this is because although it contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have many health benefits, it contains more omega-6 fatty acids.

“Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory in the sense that they increase the level of inflammation within the body and make one more predisposed to any kind of disease.

“When catfish features a lot in your diet, you consume more omega-6 fatty acids in your diet than the protective omega-3 fatty acids.

“Therefore, you are more predisposed to diseases if you consume a lot of catfish.

“The optimal ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids is supposed to be four to one, but because the catfish is reared artificially and is fed with synthesised food, the ratio can be up to ten to one,’’ he said.

Adeolu also said even though there were a lot of controversies surrounding the consumption of catfish, it still held some advantages over most fishes consumed today.

He said catfish was a good source of protein, rich in essential amino acids needed to build muscles, bones and different tissues in the body.

He explained that catfish contained a moderate amount of calories per serving or per graM, hence, was an ideal choice for those watching their body weight.

According to him, catfish is rich in phosphorus and magnesium, which are essential micro-nutrients that play a significant role in a lot of biochemical processes in the body.

“Catfish has a very low amount of mercury, which is very toxic to the human body and can when consumed in large quantities, damage the nervous system,“ Adeolu said.

Lassa fever claims 14 lives in Taraba

Lassa fever has claimed 14 lives in Taraba from January to date, an official has said.

Dr Aisha Sani, the Chairperson, Lassa Fever Committee in the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Jalingo.

According to her, of the 49 suspected cases of the disease reported in the hospital, 21 persons were treated and discharged.

However, she disclosed that seven suspected Lassa fever patients on admission in the hospital had fled the facility.

“Seven persons had absconded. We are making frantic efforts to arrest and bring them back to the hospital before they infect others with the disease.

“We have our internal securities here, but the truth is that we need more to secure the Lassa fever unit,” Sani said.

The doctor said laboratory test had so far confirmed four cases of the disease, while four suspected cases were referred to the Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control, Irrua, Edo.

“The four patients had already developed kidney failure and you know we don’t have dialysis section here.

“Let me use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government to provide a dialysis unit in this hospital so that we can save lives,” she said.

Sani said the hospital was currently handling two cases of the disease, adding that the worst affected areas in the state were Jalingo, Ardo-Kola and Bali local government areas.

NAN recalls that the FMC officially confirmed the first death of three persons of Lassa fever disease on Jan. 5.

  • Federal Medical Centre denies withholding union’s check off

Federal Medical Centre denies withholding union’s check off

The management of the Federal Medical Center [FMC] Umuahia, has denied withholding the check off dues of members of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria [MHWUN] in its employ from being remitted to the union as alleged by the executive of the union.

The MHWUN in the state had earlier accused the management of FMC Umuahia, of withholding the check off deducted from its members under its employ which it described as a form of corruption and illegality.

Reacting to the allegation, the Medical Director [MD] of the hospital, Dr Abali Chuku, said the union has two factions and that remittances had been made to the other faction recognised by the hospital management as the legal union.

Chuku said it is not possible for the management to withhold the check off dues of the union deducted for the past three years, without paying same to the owners.

He maintained that the check off dues of the union members was paid to the Uchenna Obigwe –led faction until the recent NLC election in the state in which Obigwe emerged the new NLC state chairman.

Chuku said, “Accordingly, the proper thing to do was for the new leadership to formally write to the hospital management to inform us of the new change in leadership in order to enable them make the necessary changes”.

The Union in a release signed by the Chairman of the State Caretaker Committee, Comrade Christopher Uche Ezekiel and the Secretary, Comrade Enyinnaya E. Ogbonna and made available to newsmen in Umuahia disclosed that the management has failed to release the check off it deducted from its members beginning from  October 2013-June 2015 to the Union.

According to the release, under the procurement Act and Trade Union [Consolidations] Act as amended in 2005, the Union is empowered to remind the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia and its management that it is illegal, criminal and unlawful to deduct check-off dues without releasing it to the Union.

They therefore appealed to the hospital management to release to the union its accumulated check deducted from its members.

However the MHUWN had given the management of FMC Umuahia 21 days ultimatum to remit to it all dues deducted from the salaries of its members from October 2013 to June 2015 or face the union’s action.
