    147 people die in road crashes in Niger

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that 147 people have been killed in 361 road traffic crashes between January and September 2016 in Niger state.

    The State Acting FRSC Sector Commander, Alhaji Nma Gana made this disclosure while briefing newsmen during the 2016 African Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims.

    Giving the statistics of road traffic crashes between January and September 2016, the acting Sector Commander said there have been 361 Road Traffic Crashes out of which 74 were fatal, 265 were serious and 22 were minor adding that 915 people were injured and 147 killed.

    He said that the number of road safety crashes in the first nine months of the year is almost exceeding the number of road traffic crashes in 2015.

    Gana stated that in 2015, 479 road traffic crashes occurred out of which 115 fatal accidents, 326 serious and 40 minor adding that 1,256 were injured while 191 were killed.

    He said that most of the road traffic crashes occurred within the state roads and are speed related adding that the speed limiting device which is supposed to limit have not been complied with in the state.

    “Of all the enlightenment given in the state regarding the speed limit device, we have not recorded one vehicle that have complied with installing the speed limit device.”

    The Acting Corps Sector Commander said that the road safety corps is organizing weeklong activities to commemorate this year edition of remembering road traffic crashes and sensitizing road users on the need for sanity on our roads in order to reduce crashes.

    He said that this year, the corps is advocating for prompt and proper medical care for road traffic crash injure victims, victims of road traffic crashes to be given justice.

    At least four men were on Wednesday killed and six vehicles razed in an early morning accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The accident which occurred around 3:00am, was said to have been caused by a diesel tanker, which lost control and rammed into a truck carrying beer, resulting to an inferno.

    It driver, while on high speed, abruptly applied brakes before ramming onto the beer laden truck at Kara Bus Stop, Isheri Osun.

    While three of the deceased, said to be the driver and his motorboys, were burnt beyond recognition, The Nation gathered that the other dived into the lagoon in a bid to put out the fire on their bodies but drowned.

    Among the burnt vehicles were two containerised trucks, two trailers, the tanker and a Toyota Corolla saloon car.

    As the emergency workers were battling to contain the Kara disaster, another petrol tanker fell at the Berger end of the Otedola Bridge, compounding traffic situation on the express.

    accident-at-isheriThe gridlock extended to Ikorodu Road towards Maryland, forcing traffic management agencies to divert motorists.
    However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) insisted that only three persons were consumed by the inferno, adding that the decomposed corpse found floating in the lagoon was not part of the accident casualties.

    Both LASEMA’s General Manager, Adesina Tiamiyu and NEMA’s Southwest Coordinator Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu confirmed the incident.

    They stated that the intervention of firemen, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps minimised the casualty.

    According to Yakubu, a driver of one of the affected vehicles sustained a minor injury, while others escaped unhurt.

    Tiamiyu said: “Recovery operations of burnt vehicles with LASEMA’s heavy duty equipment ongoing to abate gridlock, which has built up on Lagos-IbadanExpressway. Traffic has affected almost every part of the expressway and Ikorodu road up to Alapere and Ogudu.

    “Road users, especially articulated truck drivers are advised to avoid overspeeding and adhere to safety regulations while plying the road so as to forestall avoidable disasters.  “Investigation into the incident would be carried out by appropriate authorities at the scene.”

    Julius Berger to close a section of Lagos/Ibadan express

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Ogun, Mr Clement Oladele has said that Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, will temporarily close a section of the Ibadan/Lagos corridor by Sagamu Interchange to effect repair.

    Oladele, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Abeokuta, said that Julius Berger had informed the FRSC that the reason for the closure was to effect repairs on the section from Thursday, November 3 to Saturday, November 12.

    “There will be temporary closure by Julius Berger Nigeria (JBN) of a section of the Ibadan/Lagos corridor by Sagamu Interchange from Thursday, Nov. 3 to Saturday, November 12 to effect repair,’’ he said.

    He urged motorists, especially commercial vehicle operators, to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules.

    Oladele advised motorists to cooperate with the FRSC and other traffic officers who would ensure minimal discomfort of motorists during the period.

    “Motorists should exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules; cooperate with the FRSC and other traffic officers who will ensure minimal discomfort of motorists during the period.

    “Demarcation with traffic signs have been made on appropriate routes to follow and our men will be on the ground to control traffic.

    “Motorists are advised to be patient and obey traffic signs and traffic controllers,” he said.

    Seven die, 13 injure in Ondo auto crash

    Seven people Tuesday lost their lives in an accident which occurred around Amurin village along Akure-Owo expressway road in Owo local government area of the Ondo State.

    The incident, which occurred around 2.a.m was said to have been caused by over speeding of the driver of a Peugeot J5 bus with registration number BKK 424 XA

    It was gathered that the J5 bus driver collided with a Truck belong to Nigerian with registration number NA 1087 BO5 and 13 other passengers were also said to have sustained severe injuries and currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo.

    As at the time of filing this report, the identities of the dead victims are still unknown.

    Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) refused to talk on the incident.

    But, the State Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph confirmed the incident.

    According to him “The army truck, driven by one Sergeant Ashima Abdullahi broke down and parked beside the road when the bus rammed into it at that midnight.”

    The PPRO also stated that the remains of the dead victims had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo while the injured were also receiving treatment at the hospital.

    The Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Communications, Victor Oluwadamilare and three others narrowly escaped death in a ghastly motor accident at Yangoji, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The accident according to an eye witness occurred around Yangoji along Lokoja-Abuja highway, a village in the suburb of the Federal Capital Territory.

    A source told The Nation that the crash involved a trailer loaded with cement which was headed towards Abuja and a Toyota Hilux van which conveyed the minister’s aide and three others who were returning to Abuja from Lagos after an official assignment.

    He noted that the Toyota Hilux was on motion when the trailer took-off from its park without any light indication showing that a vehicle was going in the front.

    The source said that the Minster’s aide and other occupants sustained severe injuries, adding that no live was however lost in the terrible accident.

    The eyewitness maintained that he was among the people who rescued the victims before the arrival of the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who evacuated them from the scene of the incident to Kwali General Hospital.

    He narrated the incident as saying; “I was at the bus stop around 7:30 pm when I heard a loud unusual bang. There was a trailer loaded with cement which took off from that area and headed towards Abuja without light to indicate a vehicle was going.

    “The Toyota Hilux was on motion when the driver realised that a vehicle had took-off from that spot and before he notice the trailer, it was closer to the trailer and that was what led to the accident.”

    When contacted, the Special Assistant to the Minister, Victor Oluwadamilare confirmed the incident saying he sustained injuries but he is recovering.

    “It is true but I thank God I am recuperating from the injuries I sustained. The driver was operated upon because he sustained multiple injuries. He had an internal injury but thank God it was successful. He is now recuperating at the National Hospital, Abuja, while others have been discharged from the hospital. Thank you so much for your concern,” he said.

    Barely 24 hours after the auto accident which claimed the lives of five students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), relations and families of the victims are yet to come to terms with the tragedy.

    Many of them who stormed Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) were too grief-stricken to talk to reporters.

    They came to identify the bodies of their loved ones at the mortuary while the relations of injured came to be with them at bedside.

    Some relations cried profusely on sighting the bodies of the victims they had come to identify.

    The accident occurred at about 7.30 pm when the Lexus 320 car crashed into a bus belonging to a nursery and primary school.

    The victims who were said to be “yahoo boys” were  said to be coming from a party to celebrate the acquisition of a brand new Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) by a member of the gang.

    Governor Ayo Fayose declared a 3-day statewide prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed.

    The governor explained while on a sympathy visit to EKSUTH that the prayers was also meant to forestall a recurrence of such terrible incidences.

    He expressed regrets that the Monday night accident claimed the precious lives of the students as of Tuesday, even as two other remaining occupants are still battling with life.

    In another development, there is tension in Erio Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government Area following the alleged killing of a commercial motorcyclist by a truck belonging to a popular haulage company on Sunday.

    The youths of the community are calling on security agencies to fish out the driver of the truck. They set the truck on fire to avenge the killing of the okada rider.

    An eyewitness said the driver of the truck was on top speed when he ran into a big pothole and lost control in the process.

    It was gathered that angry mob pursued soldiers from neighboring Itawure and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Efon Alaaye Unit Command, who raced there on getting the information.

    “The mob after pursuing the soldiers and the FRSC men set the truck ablaze,” the witness added.

    When contacted, the Efon Alaaye Unit Commander, Samuel Oyedeji, said the accident could have been averted if the driver had been careful.

    “The driver was on top speed and ran into a pothole. In the process he lost control and rammed into the motorcyclist killing him on the spot.

    “Six trucks of Dangote had been involved in accidents in the last one month.

    They are the ones giving us headache.”

    Also contacted, Ekiti Sector Commander, Maiwada Ismaila, confirmed that the angry mob “pursued soldiers and FRSC officials that raced to the place. They set the truck ablaze after.”

    Two pupils from the same parents were crushed to death at Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta,  Ogun State, on their way to school by a commercial bus yesterday
    ‎ The driver of a Toyota Picnic commercisl bus marked LAGOS KTU 175 DZ, was said to have  lost control of the wheels and ran over the kids, killing them on the spot.
    The victims are said to be twins and aged 8 years old, but their elder brother who survived the accident, was critically injured.
    A Witness told reporters  that the remains of the pupils were evacuated to the Neuro-Pyschiatric Hospital, Aro while their brother also receiving treatment at the same hospital.
    The Witness said: “we heard a sound and we quickly rushed down before we realised that a vehicle had knocked down some pupils in school uniform.
    “We immediately stopped a taxi and took the children to the hospital and the nurses tried their best.
    ” But they later confirmed that the girls were dead while their brother is responding to treatment.”
    The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, Adegoke Adetunji, who confirmed this, blame the driver for reckless driving.
    Adetunji said the driver lost control and ran over the children, urging motorists to always avoid dangerous driving and put into consideration, the safety of other road users.
    “We got the report of the accident, which happened around 8 a.m., at Ita Oshin area of Abeokuta.
    “We gathered that the Toyota Picnic bus with registration number KTU 175 DZ was coming from Sango,” he said.

    The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Boboye Oyeyemi has confirmed that FRSC is neither recruiting nor doing any form of replacement as is being insinuated by some fraudsters outside, warning staff to desist from such rumour or face the wrath of the law in accordance with the FRSC Disciplinary Codes.

    He stated this Monday while addressing staff of the National Headquarters at the Corps Marshal’s weekly Parade.

    According to Bisi Kazeem Head Media Relations and Strategy in a statement issued in Abuja,  Oyeyemi said the rumour of recruitment being spread by some fraudulent persons with intent to dupe unsuspecting members of the public must be ignored, saying any staff who is caught engaging in such act of rumour mongering will have himself to blame.

    He stressed that there was no way FRSC could engage in recruitment exercise without following due process which includes wide publicity to give every Nigerian opportunity to participate in it.

    “My attention was drawn to the rumour, and I want to put it directly to you, that FRSC is neither recruiting nor doing any form of replacement as people are insinuating outside,” he stated.

    The Corps Marshal expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its logistics provisions for the FRSC, noting that the 283 operational vehicles which the President commissioned for the Corps last month coupled with the ongoing construction of office accommodation in 5 states of the Federation demonstrates President Buhari’s passion for road safety.

    He added that the empowerment has enabled the FRSC to carry out its responsibilities of making the roads safe and called on staff to rededicate themselves in order to reciprocate the gestures.

    Over speeding caused Ekiti doctors death – FRSC

    The Kaduna State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday blamed the accident that killed six Ekiti State medical doctors on over speeding.

    The Sector Head of Operations, Salisu Galadunci, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.

    NAN reports that the accident occurred on Sunday at Doka, along Abuja –Kaduna road.

    “12 medical doctors and a driver were in an 18-seater bus travelling to Sokoto for Nigeria Medical Association (NMA)’s annual conference and had a tyre bust due to over speeding.

    “The vehicle overturned with the occupants and six of the doctors died along with the driver, while six others survived with various degrees of injuries.

    “Bodies of the victim were evacuated to St. Gerard Hospital for depositing and medical attention”.

    Galadunci noted that over speeding was responsible for a larger percentage of accidents on Nigerian roads.

    The official advised drivers to desist from over speeding to save lives.

    Meanwhile, one of the survivors, the Ekiti State NMA Chairman, Dr. John Akinbote, has blamed the death of the doctors on lack of immediate medical attention.

    The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, on Wednesday disclosed that the late Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barrister James Ocholi died as a result of over speeding.

    The Corps Marshal said this while presenting the accident’s Road Traffic Crash Investigation Interim Report to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday at the meeting of the body at the presidential villa in Abuja.

    Oyeyemi stated that the Corps could not find the details of Ocholi’s driver on its database and thus declared that the driver had no license.

    Members of the Federal executive Council (FEC) led by President Muhammadu Buhari are expected to visit the family of the late minister after the meeting.

    President Buhari and some selected ministers paid glowing tributes to their fallen colleagues, just as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal said Ocholi’s burial may hold between 16th and 18th of March, 2016.
