  • U.S. Consulate seeks pact with FUTA

The Public Affairs Officer of the United States Consulate, Lagos Darcy Zotter, has asked students of  the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) to take advantage of exchange and research programmes sponsored by the U.S. government.

Zotter, who was at the institution, said the consulate seeks a stronger relationship with FUTA, given the institution’s pedigree in research and related activities, which culminated in the award of 2017/2018 Fulbright Senior Research Scholarship to Dr Folasade Olajuyigbe of the Department of Biochemistry.

She encouraged workers and students of the university to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship, saying it would give opportunity to students and middle level academic and non-academic staff to broaden their horizon and tap into cutting edge fellowship that would advance their careers.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Joseph Fuwape, praised the  Consulate for supporting academic advancement and research-related efforts of the University.

FUTA, according to Fuwape, established working relationships with some key universities and institutions, which among them is the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where some students recently visited to complete their studies in fulfilment of the collaboration between both institutions.  He said the students were the fifth batch to enjoy from the collaboration.

He said FUTA will continue to welcome collaborations in areas of core competence, adding that the partnership with the consulate will be a win-win situation for both parties.

Fuwape also praised Dr Olajuyigbe for contributing to improving the University’s global rating and encouraged others to learn from her.

EFCC: I have nothing to hide says FUTA VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adebiyi Daramola on Wednesday said he is always ready to provide clarification on his stewardship during and after his tenure in the institution.

Daramola was reacting to a report on his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged abuse of office.

The FUTA VC, who spoke through the head of the Information and Protocol Unit, Mr. Adebanjo Adegbenro said he has nothing to hide.

He explained that after making his clarification at the EFCC, he was allowed to return to Akure on the same day he was invited.

It was reported that Daramola and the University’s Bursar, Emmanuel Ademola Oresegun where grilled by EFCC officials at the commission branch’s office in Iyaganku, Ibadan in Oyo State in respect of an alleged case of abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.

The VC was accused of drawing furniture allowance annually instead of once in four years as approved and was paying himself housing allowance while residing in the University’s Vice Chancellor’s Quarters.

He was also alleged of diverting funds from various unrelated subheads to finance other projects without the appropriate approvals for such virement.

But Daramola said “as part of its statutory responsibilities, the EFCC invited me to provide clarification over issues relating to his stewardship.

“As a law abiding citizen, I duly honoured the invitation and I also cooperated with the Commission to provide the needed clarification. I was allowed to return to Akure .

“I have no fear or hindrance in rendering the report of my stewardship whenever I am called upon to do so officially or unofficially since I have nothing to hide”.
