WCQ: Fresh injury hits Nigeria as Agu limps out in Bundesliga clash

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu could miss Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers next week, as he suffered an injury in Werder Bremen’s 1-0 win over St. Pauli on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.

On Friday, Agu was one of the 23 players called up to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin next week.

The 26-year-old left-back has been a regular for Werder Bremen this season, and he started for them once more in their Bundesliga fixture against St. Pauli at the Weserstadion.

Agu had a really good showing in the first half, but he had to be helped off just before halftime, as he sustained an injury and could not continue.

Although the extent of the injury has not been confirmed, it is highly unlikely that Agu will be available for the Super Eagles by next week.

The former Osnabruck man has a bad injury history, so for him to have to leave a game, it must have been a serious problem.

“A few years ago when I went to play for the German U21s, it was more of a decision of comfort because I knew some players there. I was still very young so it would have been a big step for me to come here as a player who has never at that time switched clubs, so it was more of a decision of comfort,” Agu said in an interview with sports journalist Ayodele Olu Ibidapo

“Now I feel ready and to play for the national team is the biggest honour you can have and I’m very happy to be called up and be welcomed by the team.”

He further  shared his future goals with the Super Eagles, stressing that winning titles for Nigeria holds greater significance than club-level achievements. He emphasised his desire to help the team reclaim the AFCON title and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He continued: “On a personal level, achieving something with the national team is even bigger than on the club level. The goal is to win the African Cup of Nations again, not just make the final but win it. Of course everyone wants to see Nigeria on the biggest stage, to qualify for the World Cup, and it’s next year so we’ll try our best to make it.”

He also spoke about the warm welcome he received in the Super Eagles camp, mentioning familiar faces from his time in Germany and other teammates who helped him settle in quickly.

“Everyone welcomed me with open arms but I know some players from Germany like Nathan Tella who I’ve played against, Frank Onyeka, Boniface, also Maduka Okoye. All the players welcomed me very well so it’s a very good feeling to be here.”

Agu praised the quality within the current Super Eagles squad and stressed the importance of developing a winning mentality on the pitch, warning that there is no margin for error in the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON.

He stated:  “I see the quality in the team, the players have a lot of potential, it’s just about getting the right mind-set on the pitch, to really know what it’s all about because there’s no room for errors anymore, we have to win all or we don’t make it.”

“We need to have this in mind and take on every game like this. Also in the African Cup of Nations, it’s the same thing. We have to do the same like the last time, but just finish the deal. I don’t think there’s any other nation, not just in Africa that has the quality we have upfront. It’s just about the mind-set on the pitch.”
