  • FELIX ANYANSI-AGWU

Recently honoured by the government and people of Abia State for his meritorious service to football as well as supervising the golden era of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba since taking over the reins of the club in 2000, Felix Anyansi-Agwu shares his good and bad moments with the People’s Elephants in a revealing conversation with MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN.

Football has undoubtedly made Felix Anyansi-Agwu smile and cry as the debonair chairman of Enyimba International Football Club chats his course in the beautiful game of soccer.

Nearing almost two decades in the saddle, history would forever be kind to Anyansi-Agwu having  yet supervised some of the golden moments of the Aba-based side but he reckons the years gone by have not been without  some difficult challenges.

In a revealing interview with The Nation ahead of last Wednesday’s Total CAF Confederation Cup first leg semi-final 1-0 home loss to Raja Casablanca of Morocco in Aba, Anyansi-Agwu recalled how his doting son emblematically stabbed him in the back over his love for the club widely known as the People’s Elephants.

“Above every other thing, my family gives me immense joy and my children and wife have made huge sacrifice because of my involvement with football and, especially, my service to Enyimba.

“I’m married to football and for someone passionate as I am, it means my family suffers a lot because I’m not always available for them,” stated Anyansi-Agwu who marked his 53rd birthday on August 8.

Anyansi-Agwu came into the saddle as chairman of Enyimba at the turn of the last century in 2000 and he has revamped the fortunes of the club from a provincial club to continental warlords by leading the People’s Elephants to many conquests at both local and continental levels.

Under his watch, Enyimba became the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Champions League trophy in 2003 after 39 years of failure by several clubs including foremost Rangers International of Enugu and Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan and they successfully defended the crown in 2004.

Apart from winning the CAF Super Cup in 2004 and 2005, Enyimba have also won the  Nigeria Professional  Football League (NPFL) title  seven times, as well as four Federation Cups, amongst other silverwares under the watch of Anyansi-Agwu.

Such remarkable feats with Enyimba, according to him, were not without a price: “I owe my wife a lot of gratitude for her unconditional and unquantifiable support which has helped me to succeed with Enyimba.

“My wife and children has sacrificed so much because of my involvement with Enyimba. My children don’t see me too often and I remember a particular incident with my little boy.

“This particular afternoon, I came home to pick something and as I was about leaving the house, he called on me ‘daddy, you are leaving again?’

“What he said touched me because it was like a stab behind my back and I looked back with tears rolling down my cheeks. You can therefore understand what the family has gone through because of my involvement with football,” explained Anyansi-Agwu who was recently honoured for his meritorious service by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu during the 27th anniversary of the creation of Abia State.

Of course, Anyansi-Agwu has witnessed bountiful harvest seasons with Enyimba but will easily recollect some bad spell  (such as Wednesday’s home loss to Raja )that actually made him criy: ”Oh, come on, football can blow off your mind and there are matches you lose that you shed tears;  even if it (tears) doesn’t drop ,you shed tears in  your heart.

“It has not been that easy because one has to soak in a lot of pressure because some results can give you heart attack.

“Some of us in football have developed high blood pressure for over 15 years and being Enyimba chairman is not only about the fun fare because there are lot of things administrators and coaches pass through that people don’t see.

“Football management is not an easy thing; the tension is especially much when you are passionate as I’m because of my love for football and especially for Enyimba.”

Anyansi-Agwu’s magic wand should be of interest to football aficionados having supervised what would be regarded as the club’s golden era since its formation in 1976 by a civil servant – Jerry Amadi Enyeazu – who was the first Director for Sports of Imo State out of which Abia State was carved out.

“I’m always grateful to God for his mercies and grace upon me, my family and the Enyimba family in general,” he volunteered. “It is not easy to be in a particular position for so long and still remain relevant but God has been very merciful.

“Football management is all about experience and you can only gather such experience the longer you stay on the job.

“You must also be committed and have enormous passion for the job; this is paramount because you cannot be in a particular position without passion for the job.

“My passion for football is immeasurable; my commitment to football can’t be quantified. Football is me and I’m also part and parcel of football.

“Football is my first love; a game that I loved from my younger days and I played the game at the primary, secondary and higher schools where I also played active role in terms of its administration. “I’ve also played active role in private capacity even before I came on board as an administrator of the club and I couldn’t have succeeded without the grace of God.

“My commitment to football and especially to Enyimba is second to none because without commitment, you cannot achieve much.

“It also goes with its own challenges but the experience acquired over the years has helped in manoeuvring what could be a major problem,” noted Anyansi-Agwu, as he speaks on other sundry issues.

    Stewardship since 2000

In 1999, I came in as the vice-chairman of Enyimba Football Club and I grew from VP to Chairman in 2000 and the club actually had two matches left to escape relegation. If they had lost those two matches, they would have been relegated but by the grace of God we were able to win those two matches. That saved Enyimba from relegation that year. In 2001, we won the league title for the first time in the history of the club. We retained the trophy in 2002 and also in 2003. Also in 2003, we went as far as winning the CAF Champions League for the first time in the history of Nigerian football and we added CAF Super Cup in 2004. We retained the CAF Champions League in 2004 and also won the league title and FA Cup in Nigeria as well as the CAF Super Cup in 2005. That was the trend with high level of consistency; and that has been the great motivation for us. We have set and broken records in Nigerian football and we were usually between second and third positions in some years we didn’t win any trophy in Nigeria. When you go into the history of Enyimba, it’s very rich because we have won everything winnable in Nigeria including seven league titles and four Federation Cup.

Comparison between the 2003-2004 and present Enyimba squad

The 2003 and 2004 set was fantastic and because the team was built from 2000, you can see clearly a certain level of consistency; those were memorable moments. With the benefit of my experience over the years, I can say that our current team has winning mentality and they have the capacity to achieve like their predecessors of 2003 and 2004. Having reached this stage, the players are well motivated and they want to make names for themselves.

Bold bid for CAF Confederation Cup

The only continental trophy that is left for us to win at Enyimba is the CAF Confederation Cup. But we are very hopeful and God willing, this is the year for us to win this important trophy.  As in boxing, we have likened the Confederation Cup to the unification bout and we want to win the trophy to complete our haul of trophies in Africa. We still believe it is possible for us to achieve because of the way people, especially His Excellency the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, have rallied behind us coupled with the support of our teeming fans here and across Nigeria and beyond. We know that Nigerians eagerly want us to win this elusive Confederation Cup and we believe this is possible through hard work and commitment.

Dealing with several coaches over the years

Yes, a lot of coaches have passed through here. Many of them have been so wonderful but I must confess that it’s not easy to manage players and coaches. But it comes with some skill and understanding about the nature of the job. From day one, I’ve created the enabling environment for them to do their job without any distraction. You can ask the coaches that have worked here and they will tell you that I’m probably the only club chairman that has never bothered to see their list for matches until it’s officially released. Over almost 20 years that I’ve been in charge, I have never requested to see the team list and that shows that I give the coaches the freehand to do their job. I don’t interfere with their job.

    Plans after leaving Enyimba

There are still lot of things and dreams  that I still want to achieve  and before I came in fully to Enyimba, I  was an importer of goods and other things that I’d put my hands on. By the grace of God, there is a whole lot of progress on whatever that I’ve touched.  One thing is sure: I will always be around football even when I leave Enyimba. I have a dream of running a model football academy that will be educationally based. This will be purely for young people so that they can combine education with football.  I’m not going to forget my business acumen and will continue to supervise some other things that I already have in my private capacity.

    From football to political minefield

Contesting for governorship in Abia Sate? Don’t even go there. Honestly, I’m not over ambitious and I’m a very calm person because I know what I want. At the moment, I’m not a trained politician and going into politics now is not even in my thinking. My thinking now is to do my job with Enyimba in a respectable and honourable way so that we can take the club to the next level. I want to leave a stable Enyimba that will be self-sufficient so that others coming behind can achieve much based on the platform we’ve created.  My resolve now is not only about getting results though it helps. We want to build a capacity so that Enyimba can be self-sustaining. We want Enyimba not to depend solely on government funding in order to survive in a foreseeable future.

  • Mfon Udoh remains Enyimba player insist Anyansi Agwu

Chairman of Confederation cup campaigners Enyimba Felix Anyansi  Agwu, has dismissed report in some quarters that the team’s forward Mfon Udoh has left the club.

The Aba based side due  in Kigali Friday  ahead of their Confederation cup clash against Rayon Sports of Rwanda at the Nyamirambo Stadium on Sunday, insisted that the former Akwa United ace remains a player of the Peoples Elephant, revealing however that he is currently on an indefinite suspension for what the club dubbed  serious misconduct and disregard for established  authority.

Taking to the social media, the Sidi-Usman Abd’Allah tutored side “Our attention has been drawn to news making the rounds that Mfon Udoh has quit our club. There is no truth to this as the player was suspended last week for misconduct and indiscipline. He was suspended along with other players but details were not released to the public”

Also attached to the statement released on Friday was a letter dated 7th September 2018, titled “Indefinite suspension for Gross Misconduct and Indiscipline” signed by club Chairman Felix Anyansi Agwu.

Ironically while Enyimba insists that he is still in the club, a peep into his profile on Wikipaedia however reveal that he has been listed as free agent under ‘current team sub-heading’.

Mfon who joined Enyimba in 2013, has so far 76 appearances for the two time champions league champions scoring 39 goals.  He was particularly impressive in the qualifying games 2016 CAF Champions league scoring a brace against Vipers FC of Uganda

He scored another brace in the next round of the competition against Vital’o FC in a 5-1 home victory in Aba. In the

final qualifying round, Udoh netted a hat-trick in the first leg against Etoile du Sahel for a convincing 3-0 win at home.

His exploits in the CAF champions effort despite the club eventual elimination, led to his nomination for the award of CAF African footballer of the year at the end of 2016.

Meanwhile Algeria’s Mustapha Ghorbal will be in charge of the Rayon Sports versus Enyimba clash on Sunday.

The 36 year old who has dished out five red cards between March and August this year, will be assisted by compatriots Abdelhak Etchialiand Mokrane Gourari respectively.

Return leg of the Rayon Sports clash will take place at the newly renovated Aba Township Stadium on September 23rd.

    Anyansi blasts Keshi

Says Big Boss should walk away if not interested

THE Nigeria Football Federation(NFF)’s Technical and Development Committee Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu has blasted the out of contract Super Eagles’ boss, Stephen Keshi for resorting to the media to iron out his terms of contract instead of opening negotiation with his employers.

Anyansi Agwu insisted that the Big Boss should have done the most honourable thing which is to decline the offer presented to him instead of playing demi-god and assuming that he is bigger than those that have offered him the job.

In an exclusive chat with SportingLife from Cotonou on telephone, Anyansi warned that it was imperative for the NFF to give their conditions of service and that it behoves on Keshi and his advisors to peruse the contract terms and come back to the Football House for negotiation instead of the present norm of resorting to the media.

He said the NFF had had enough of Keshi and that the contract terms enshrined in his new job offer are sacrosanct and that the Big Boss could do the honourable thing and take a bow and leave instead of trying to whip sympathy from Nigerians.

Anyansi disclosed that Keshi had to bring himself under the control of his employers and that if he feels he is bigger than them he should not bother taking the job and should forget about it instead of the ‘noise’ everywhere about his new contract.

“I am tired of talking about the terms we have stipulated to Keshi in the new contract offer to him but I have to react once again so that Keshi will be able to caution himself and know that he is not bigger than Nigeria or the NFF.

“For Keshi to work with the NFF he needs to bring himself down and strive to get good advisors because the current ones he has are not doing him any good at all. If you are not satisfied with something is it not best for you to approach those that gave you the stipulation and work at negotiating your way out?

“Keshi never did that. He went to the pages of the newspapers to express his dissatisfaction with the contract offer. Is that the medium through which he got the job offer? He is thinking that he is bigger than Nigeria or the NFF. That is a lie and for him to work with us he needs to put himself under our control.

“We are not saying that he should not seek for negotiation, but the way he is going about it shows that he only has bad advisors around him. If he is not satisfied with what we have stipulated in the new contract offer why can’t he take the bold step of declining it and keep quiet. Is he the only person in the country that will be embarrassing everyone via the media?” Anyansi told SportingLife from Cotonou.

    • NFF top shot praises Nigerians in Abu Dhabi for support

    • Team arrives Dubai for Sudan

The Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF)’s  Technical and Development Committee, Felix Anyansi Agwu has heaped plaudits on the home-based Super Eagles who were only within few minutes of getting at least a draw against 2015 AFCON bound Cote d’Ivoire in a friendly match played in Abu Dhabi,UAE on Sunday.

Nigeria’s senior national team is under rebuilding again after the country’s failure to qualify for the 2015 AFCON and the NFF organised two friendly games against Cote d’ Ivoire and Sudan to keep the Eagles busy and serves as consolation for the team’s 2015 AFCON no-show.

Anyansi Agwu who was on the entourage to UAE told SportingLife from Dubai on telephone that the Eagles played very well and only lost to the Ivoriens owing to a careless back pass from a defender to his team-mate which the Ivory Coast striker, Salomon Kalou capitalised for the only goal of the game.

He said besides the mistake that led to the only goal of the match during the dying minutes of the game both sides were equally matched with no much difference with Nigerians that paraded 99 percent home-based players with the exception of Steve Ukoh who plays in Europe and the Ivoriens who have most of their players scattered in top European countries.

Anyansi Agwu who doubles as the Chairman of Enyimba FC of Aba also stated that the game against Ivory Coast has given the home-based players more exposure and experience adding that the team would do better against the Falcon of Jediane of Sudan later this week.

“The team played fantastic game and were unlucky to have made such mistake at the crucial moments of the game. We are happy with their performance that players made up of mostly home-based players to play the Ivory Coast the way they did showed that our national team has a future.

“The team, I believe will do better against Sudan because the players played with their whole hearts and ought to be rewarded with another brilliant outing and result against Sudan,” Anyansi Agwu told SportingLife.

The Enyimba Boss also hailed Nigerians that are living in Abu Dhabi for the warm reception for the team and the support they have been showing since their arrival in the early hours of Friday last week.

He affirmed that the Eagles would reward their steadfastness with an improved display against Sudan in Dubai on Saturday.

    Anyansi assures on Enyimba’s revival

Enyimba FC Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu has insisted that the Peoples’ ELephant will soon return to reckoning after the team’s poor start to the new Globacom NPFL season.

The six time premier league champions boss in a chat with futaa.com after last sunday’s 1-0 win over Akwa Utd said the club is poised to return to their position in the league table which is the top.

“Enyimba is a club that is full of champions, every competition we enter into, we aim to win. We may not have started the league well, but let’s wait till the season gets to an end to see were we will be”Anyansi stated.

The Aba Landlords chief also maintained that their poor start to the season in the league should not make football pundits judge them as even Big teams loose at home.

“losing is also part of football, its something that happens, even the big football teams do loose at home, we may have lost to our neighbours (Abia Warriors) at home, but we’ve also picked up vital points away from home against Sunshine Stars Fc & Warri Wolves Fc, so you can see that we are on a course for a good season.

“The league is not easy for anybody to say that a particular club will be crowned champions at the end of the season, its quite too early to decide that now, but its always good to start early too so as to enhance your chances of winning the league” He added.

Anyansi confirmed that interim coach, Imama Amapakabor will remain in charge till the management decides on the next step following the suspension of Technical Adviser, Zachary Baraje and Coach Monday Odigie.

Further decisions according to the club boss as regards the suspended gaffers will be made known to the public.

  • ‘Enyimba can still qualify’

    ‘Enyimba can still qualify’

Felix Anyansi Agwu has admitted that the task Enyimba faces following Sunday’s home defeat to AS Real is enormous but expresses confidence nonetheless in their qualification to the next round of the CAF Champions League.

The Elephants were stunned in the second half by two quickfire goals from Moctar Cisse and Amaddu Sidibe after Sibi Gwar had given them the lead going into half time and this has left the two-time winners with a mountain to climb in the return fixture in Bamako.

Speaking to EnyimbaFC.net after the game, the club boss admitted that it was a tough position the club find themselves in.

“Certainly this is a big disappointment, not just for the club, but for the country as a whole. We are one of the biggest teams in Africa and naturally everyone expects us to do well at this stage of the competition, but football can produce results like this when you least expect it.

“I know we are now in a tough position and the game in Mali will not be easy, but I believe we can still qualify. It will be difficult, but certainly not impossible. We are the sole representative of Nigeria in this competition and we do not intend to drop out just like that.”

Enyimba, who had not lost at home since 2005 to Al Ahly of Egypt, appeared to be in control of the game until they were undone by poor defending and Anyansi insists the team must improve in order to stand a chance of making history.

“We played poorly in the game, not just by how we failed to convert our chances but how we defended and our overall attitude. The players seemed to lack belief in themselves and they allowed the Malians too much room to operate. But the deed has been done and nothing can change it.

“What we need to do now is to make history. The Malians have made history by being the first Malian team to come here and defeat us. We too have to go there and defeat them and qualify to make history for ourselves and correct the wrongs of this match. Too many people are unhappy today and the only way we can make it right is to go to Mali and qualify.

“Like I said, it is going to be difficult but it is not an impossible mission. If we go there with the right attitude and give it our best, I’m sure we can beat them. The technical crew needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with a match plan that will ensure we win and qualify. We as management will provide the platform that they need to do well but at the end of the day, they will need to go out on the pitch to do what is right,” he stated.

Enyimba meanwhile have announced the immediate suspension of the team’s goalkeeper trainer, Shuaibu Suleiman following the result of Sunday’s match.

  • ANYASI- I’m in love with Enyimba, Chelsea

ANYASI- I’m in love with Enyimba, Chelsea

You don’t have to look farther than Felix Anyansi Agwu as the man that turned around the fortune of Nigeria’s most successful club, Enyimba International Football Club of Aba.

Formed as a provincial club in the 1970s by a civil servant, Jerry Amadi Enyeazu -who was the first Director for Sports in the newly established Imo State- from where Abia State was carved out, the People’s Elephants became a major force in Nigerian football about three decades later at the dawn of the democratic rule.

At the instance of soccer-loving former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Enyimba broke the jinx of not winning the CAF Champions League trophy in 2003 after 40 years of trying without success. But Agwu has remained as constant as the Northern star and one would be forgiven to say without his Midas touch, there won’t be brand Enyimba! Under his watch, Enyimba has won a record 26 trophies in 13 years and it is there for all to see that no one speaks passionately about the People’s Elephants than Agwu.

“Enyimba is a baby dear to my heart and what we have done all these years is unprecedented but we are not resting on our oars,” Anyansi told the The Nation Sport & Style in the thick of preparations for today’s Champions League First Round, First Leg match against Real De Bamako of Mali in Aba.” I love Enyimba with passion and the only club I share same passion for is Chelsea FC of England.”

Though Agwu said the achievements of Enyimba compared favourably with that of Manchester United under the retired Sir Alex Ferguson, his heart has long been taken by the Stamford Bridge giants.

“Supporting a club is about style and team like Chelsea that supports African players carries my heart,” Agwu said with a cacophony of laughter when pressed on why he’s not supporting Manchester United because of his fondness for Ferguson.

“I’m not supporting Chelsea because of Mourinho or because of a particular player, rather I love Chelsea because they are the Blues and as you know, blue is the colour of Enyimba.

“My concern is always about the welfare of African players in a tough and demanding league in Europe.

“But by and large, Chelsea have been so liberal with their recruitment of African players and I respect them for that,” Agwu, an executive committee member of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), noted as he spoke about his stewardship as well as the challenge of managing the People’s Elephants all these years. Excerpts…

    Stewardship at Enyimba

I was actually the vice-chairman in 1999 and some few months after, I was made the chairman when the incumbent voluntarily resigned for some business reason. I was later appointed as the substantive chairman of the club in 2000. There is no perfect word to describe the management of Enyimba all these years, rather I would describe it as sweet and sour. I say this with all sense of responsibility because there have been some really good, exciting moments at this club and there have been some sad, difficult periods; very challenging moments too. So, it is a combination of two extreme situations. But on the whole, it has been wonderful and glorious since 2000 up till date.

If you go through the records of what we have achieved since 2000, it’s amazing because we have been winning trophies from 2001 till today and we have actually won a total of 26 trophies. I think this is unprecedented to have a club winning this number of trophies within 12-13 years. It takes a great club in the mould of Manchester United under the great manager, Alex Ferguson, to have been able to do such. You remember Sir Ferguson won about twenty-something trophies in 18 years when he was in charge of Manchester United. It is not an easy job to achieve so much, but we thank God we have been able to do this and ready to even do more.

    Sustaining success with Enyimba

It doesn’t tally that way. Having won a double in 2003 and 2004, Enyimba has not been able to win it again. It doesn’t work that way because there are a lot of factors that come into play before a team can win the Champions League, be it in Africa or Europe. We don’t have to be narrow minded about this because to play on the continent is not an easy thing for that matter because there are equally good teams who are desirous of winning the trophy but it was not the lack of efforts on our part that we have not been able to win it again. If you look at what we have been able to do since when we won two successive Champions League and two African Super Cup, you would agree that we have been striving to be at the top of our game. Of course, we have represented the country on so many other occasions since then and we even reached the semi-final stages of the competition about four times at one point or the other, which is by no means an easy achievement. Some other clubs would celebrate reaching the semi-final of the CAF Champions League as if they have won the trophy but we can’t afford to do that because we are a champion’s team. There are so many factors that can stop you for winning no matter how much you try to and I will cite an example. In 2011, we played 10 matches unbeaten and got to the semi-final and the only match we lost was in Morocco 1-0 and we drew goalless in Aba which stopped us from progressing to the final.

    Dirty tricks against Enyimba

Many people would be wondering why it is only Enyimba that is winning trophies and there are even tricks here and there in order to stop us from winning but we are used to them because they are mere obstacles that shouldn’t stop us anyway. Of course, we don’t want to forget that clubs pass through phases and life is all about ups and downs; you can win everything, every time but our determination is to continue to give our best all the time. I think it is only Al-Ahly of Egypt that has been able to win the Champions League on three successive occasions and it goes to show that it is not an easy job to win the CAF Champions League. But we are going to give it our best effort this season and probably, this is going to be our time to win it for the third time. We want to go as far as winning the trophy and that is our priority this year. We pray that with luck on our side we can go all the way because we have resolved to bend backward to rule the continent. We have waited for so long and I believe the moment is here with us again. We are serious contender and I believe we have signalled our intention. All over Africa, they are aware of our pedigree because we are not an ordinary team as such; we really mean business this year. It is our hope and aspirations to win it again.

    No guarantee in football

There is no guarantee in football even if you score 20 goals in the first leg because you can still have an off day at work in the second leg. I’m surprised when I hear people saying that ‘ you should win 3-0 or 4-0 to make the second leg game a mere formality. But that is not always the case because you can still have a low margin score line and still win well in the second game because win or lose, it all depends on your effort. I would give you a classical scenario with the Malian team, Real DE Bamako, we are meeting this weekend: They went to Morocco in the Preliminary Round and were leading 2-0 till the 89th minute when ASFAR scored a goal and went on to get the equaliser during the three minutes added time. On paper, everybody would have thought that the ASFAR would be beaten black and blue in Bamako yet the second leg ended 1-1; that shows that you cannot even get carried away even when you already have a good result. For us, that has given us an idea about how strong Real Bamako can be even on an away ground and we are not going to handle them with kids’ gloves

My take on home-based Super Eagles

In fact, I don’t want to be drawn to what I had said in the past, because as an executive committee member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), I noted that they did very well but their performance could have been better for obvious reasons. My thinking is that we need to appoint a coach for the home-based team who would be working in hand-in hand with the Super Eagles coach. For instance, Coach Stephen Keshi has little time because he’s always busy with the senior national team and I felt there should be an opening for a coach who is familiar with the domestic league for the home-based team. Of course, such appointment would not a permanent one rather when the need arises for the competition. The coach would have the opportunity of paying attention to players in the league and with that we can select the best players to represent the country and I think this would bring about improved performance.

  • We must stay above Anges’ intimidation – Anyansi Agwu

Enyimba’s Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu has warned the People’s Elephant to see their hosts unfriendly gestures as one of the hurdles they must come to terms with to get to the next round of the CAF Champions League.

The Aba side got the reverse of the kind of reception they wished for at an away game in Lome when they were not properly ushered into the country by Anges de Notse and Togolese Football Federation(TFF) officials on Friday.

But in a brief chat with the players, coaches and the accompanying officials, Anyansi Agwu urged the players to be proactive and not allow the distractions to wear them down and lose focus of their main purpose of coming to Lome.

He said the track record of Enyimba must be jealously guarded hence the need for the current crop of players of the team should count themselves lucky and play with all they have if they want to assume legendary status just like their predecessors.

“The Nigerian Embassy in Togo has played a major role in our being comfortable here. The people in the Embassy including the Nigeria’s Ambassador to Togo, His Excellency, Matthew Sunday Adoli made us to settle down well. We should be guided to face our main reason of being here. We must work against any form of distraction. Whatever we do from the time we arrive till the game must be what we lead us to the qualification ticket we crave for. No matter the tricks or the antics of our hosts we have antidote to them. We perform better in difficult position and this game should not be different,” Anyansi told the players.

  • CHAN Fall out: League players measuring up – Anyansi

    By Julius Okorie

Enyimba Chairman Felix Anyansi Agwu has given league players in the country a pat on the back for rising to the occasion despite constraints. He made his feelings known while assessing the player’s performance at the just ended African Nations Championship in South Africa.

Anyansi, who described the home Eagles achievement in the championship as good enough, said the result achieved is an indication that the team has the potentials to perform better. He however expressed desire that the home based Eagles be handled by Nigerian league coach.

“I would love to see a current league coach handle the home based Eagles so that the Chief Coach can focus on his job of handling the national team,” he noted.
