    ICAN confers fellowship award on 969 members

    The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has conferred Fellowship awards on 969 members.

    ICAN President, Otunba Femi Deru charged new Fellows to inculcate honesty and discharge their duties excellently for them to contribute to the development of the economy.

    He said: “The nation is waiting for us as chartered accountants to make things work as the positive impact of the governance process of the country should be focused on.”

    One of the inducted Fellows, Mrs. Yeside Idowu, expressed happiness to be among the new fellows to be conferred with the honour. She described the experience as ‘a thing of joy and noble to be recognised by ICAN’.

    Former Minister of Health and Chairman of Juli pharmacy, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi urged the professionals to rise and contribute positively to building the economy.

    Adelusi-Adeluyi said from inception of the country,  the military and politicians have failed, and have been left alone because the professionals are too busy to being part of the nation-building project.

    He said true professionals, who imbibe professional ethics of good corporate governance,  can effect the desired change needed in the country. He noted that patriotic professionals need not cut corners, beg, live ostentatious lifestyles or be greedy.

    Speaking on the advancement of the accounting profession, he posited that mentoring programme should be given focus by the body, digital language education should be taught both old and new members, and a bridge of understanding should be built between the old and the young in the sector.

  • ECOWAS Fellowship Programme for and PhD students (EFP), 2015

    The Association of African Universities (AAU) is inviting applications for ECOWAS Fellowship Programme. Fellowship is open to qualified Nigerians (including graduate students, researchers, lecturers,  and staff) who will be admitted for Masters or PhD degree programme at any one of the following three universities: University of Lagos, Nigeria; University of Ibadan, Nigeria and Cheikh Anta Diop University, Senegal. The application deadline is 15th October 2015.

    Study Subject(s): Fellowship is awarded in all disciplines linked to the fields of strategic importance to the West African region such as: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Earth and Life Sciences; Health including maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, etc.; Agriculture, Food Security and related disciplines; History of Africa; Information technology; and Gender issues. – Scholarship can be taken at: Nigeria and Senegal

    Eligibility:

    • A good first degree (at least second class upper division or its equivalent) is required for Masters degree programme. An MPhil degree or its equivalent is required for PhD programme.
    • Priority will be given to Anglophone nationals who want admission into Francophone institutions, as well as to Francophone nationals who want admission into Anglophone institutions. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

    Scholarship Description: The Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the 2015 maiden edition of the ECOWAS Fellowship Programme for Masters and PhD (EFP) under the sponsorship of the Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS). The Programme seeks to promote capacity building within the ECOWAS 15-member countries by providing full fellowships for training and education for nationals of ECOWAS member states in higher education institutions of ECOWAS.

    What does it cover? The ECOWAS Fellowship Programme (EFP) is a full scholarship intended to cater for each fellow’s costs of living, tuition fees, visas, travel, insurance and thesis research. In this respect, ECOWAS will pay the tuition fees directly to the institutions and provide a monthly stipend of US$600 per Masters student and US$800 per PhD student to cover all other expenses for the duration of the degree programme.

    How to Apply: Applications should be sent electronically. Qualified candidates will be admitted to one of the three institutions mentioned above. Please ensure that the institution that you have selected offers the course you have chosen. All the three universities provide information about their degree programmes on their websites. Each application must include the following:

    • A photocopy of the degree and other certificates.

    Postgraduate Fellowship named after Ekwueme

    A new postgraduate fellowship for Nigerians under the age of 40 is now available for the ‘Dual Career Training Programme to obtain a PhD in Governance and Policy Analysis’ (GPAC²).

    The Alex Ekwueme Fellowship, named after the first elected Vice-President of Nigeria, will be offered every two years from March 2016 and  is aimed at shaping and empowering the next generation of Nigerian leaders.

    The programme will be taught in the stimulating research community of the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and the United Nations University,UNU-MERIT, based at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

    Dr. Joe Abah, a Nigerian civil servant who graduated in 2012, says: “The GPAC² programme offered me world class, cutting-edge research skills, delivered in a rigorous but flexible way. Since completing the programme I have moved on to higher responsibilities twice in the last three years, including being head-hunted to be the Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms in the Presidency in Nigeria, a position that I still hold.”

    The Alex Ekwueme Fellowship, he said, would mean that Nigerian scholars who already have practical experience could complement it with academic rigour in areas that are important for Nigeria’s development.

      “The GPAC² programme meets the needs of researchers with full- or part-time jobs, allowing them to combine their careers with obtaining a PhD. It also provides advanced training in the skills and theory crucial to policy analysis and design, with lectures given by top scholars in the field of policy analysis and related areas including governance, migration, sustainable development and social protection.”

    According to Dr. Mindel van de Laar, the PhD programme director, “The programme is taught entirely in English and consists of a common first year of three training workshops (two weeks each time), followed by two research workshops per year in subsequent years (one week each time).

    To be eligible for the fellowship, she said, “prospective Ekwueme fellows must be citizens of Nigeria under the age of 40 and should have a Master’s degree, a strong academic record, professional and/or volunteer experience, an affinity with academic research, and a clear interest in policy analysis. Ideally, the candidate’s employer will offer support, by for example, providing data, related assignments and the like”.

  • 2016 Ekwueme Research Fellowship at United Nations University, Netherlands

    United Nations University is inviting applications for Ekwueme fellowship, starting March 2016. Fellows must be of Nigerian nationality and must be working on Governance research. The fellowship recipient receives a fellowship including coverage of the tuition fees for enrolment in the years 2, 3 and 4 (6.000 euro each, in total 18.000 euro). The application deadline is 15 October 2015.

    Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands

    Eligibility -Fellow is younger than 40 when applying

    • The fellowship recipient will complete the application form – and fulfil all programme application requirements, before 15 October 2015.
    • The fellowship recipient applies for the fellowship, starting the GPAC2 programme on 1 March 2016.

    Scholarship Description: Starting March 2016 (application deadline 15 October 2015), the GPAC2 programme offers the option to apply for the Ekwueme fellowship. The fellowship is called after Nigeria’s first vice president and the founder of the political party PDP. He risked his life to stand up to the military dictatorship in Nigeria thus ending the country’s military rule and commencing our present democratic government which started in 1999.

    Duration of award(s): The fellowship will be offered every other year, with first fellow selected in the application round.

    What does it cover?

    • The fellowship recipient will pay him/herself the tuition for year one (8.000 euro), as well as tuition for all years that he/she will remain enrolled after year four.
    • The fellowship recipient will pay his/her own travel expenses , visa/permit expenses, accommodation expenses in Maastricht, fieldwork expenses, books and other expenses.

    How to Apply: Please use the online application form, to apply for the programme. When filling the form you will be asked to provide the documents listed below. Please note that all documents need to be provided digitally; official documents need to be scanned:

    • certified copies of bachelor’s and master’s diplomas and grades
    • proof of proficiency in English – the minimum level accepted is 600 PBT, 100 ICT or 240 CBT (TOEFL) or 7.0 (IELTS). Native speakers and students who have received their bachelor’s or master’s education in English are exempted
    • motivation letter (400- 500 words)
    • two signed reference letters on original letter head (by current or former professors or employers)
    • letter from current employer, including a statement of support of the GPAC² fellow and an indication of ways to support the fellow (for GPAC² applicants only)

    The Nation man Akioye wins Global Fellowship

    An Assistant Editor at The Nation, Mr. Seun Akioye, has won the Climate Change Media Partnership Fellowship (CCMP) 2015. The CCMP is being run by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network. The fellowship will enable him to cover the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris, France from November 30 to December 11.

    Of 100 applications received globally, 20 journalists from around the world were chosen. In choosing Akioye, the organisers said they were impressed with his experience and focus for COP21, which distinguished him from other applicants.

    With the fellowship, Akioye will join a prestigious but restricted list of international environmental journalists working towards accurate and sustainable reportage of  climate change issues.

    Formed in 2007 by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Panos London and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the CCMP has been supporting journalists to gain a multifaceted understanding of climate change’s global impact, through the coverage of the UN climate summits.

  • Fellowship fetes youths on Val’s Day

    To mark the Valentine’s Day, the Stone Campus Fellowship of the University of Ibadan (UI) and Singles’ Fellowship, a youth arm of the Word Alive Ministries, held a special event for bachelors and spinsters. The Penton Rise building in Bodija where the event held was beautifully decorated in red and white ribbons.

    The organisers said the event, which was tagged: Ahava, was to educate the participants about true love and the essence of the celebration. Ahava is Hebrew word for love.

    Participants were told that love  builds an everlasting relationship, loyalty and benevolence. They were also told that love seeks well-being of others and does not fade.

    The Head of Singles’ Fellowship, Pastor Ayo Fatokun, urged the participants to abide and abound in the love of God, saying: “God has commanded everyone to love their enemies and true love does not hurry but endures all things and is always generous, humble and polite.”

    The Singles’ President, Mr Tope Orimoloye, reminded the participants on why they must love and show loyalty to their partner. According to him, love for God must come first before showing love to neighbours.

    He urged the participants to promote justice, love and peace where they live. He thanked the president of the Word Alive Ministries International Alex Adegboye, and his wife for their support for students’ fellowships at the UI.

    The event featured singing and dancing.

  • Fellowship offers free medical test

    Pilgrim Fellowship, the youth wing of All Saints’ Chapel at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has held a three-day health seminar for members of the university community. The event, held the church auditorium, featured interactive sessions and free medical test.

    On the first day, there was a health seminar with the theme: Diet and health: What relationship? Dr Noruwa Ekhator of the UNIBEN Teaching Hospital (UBTH) stressed the need for proper dieting. She said not only the rich could afford balanced diet, noting that proper knowledge of food composition was key to ensure a balanced diet.

    She urged the audience, who were mainly staff and students of the university, to ensure vitamin intake, which she said could be gotten from fruits and vegetables.

    She said: “It is necessary that we regularly incorporate fruits and vegetables in our daily diet, especially the young and the elderly. This is because these items contain vitamins and minerals that aids proper body metabolism.”

    During the seminar held on the second day, Dr Afeaje Olokor advised the audience to always go for medical checkup. “Always visit a hospital to ascertain your health status, at least, once in a month, because physical appearance is not healthy living,” she said.

    The event was rounded off with a free medical test for students and staff. The fellowship invited medical practitioners from the Teaching Hospital to carry out wide range of tests on the beneficiaries. The medical personnel, led by Prof Roseline Unuigbe, were made up of physicians, laboratory scientists and optometrists.

    Blood pressure, blood sugar level, Body Mass Index (BMI) and eye tests were carried out on the beneficiaries, some of whom were given referral for full treatments.

    A 79-year-old Mrs. Veronica Punuka praised the fellowship for its gesture, saying: “I am happy about the free medical test, which gave me confidence on my health status. I learnt tips to manage arthritis and rheumatism.”

    Another beneficiary, a 31-year-old Oluwasegun Obi, said: “I did not know I had some health issues. But the test gave me some information about my health I didn’t know before. Thank God I was part of the event.”

    Co-ordinator of the Pilgrims Fellowship, Epunah Chinwe, a postgraduate student of Health Education, said: “The aim of the free medical test was to help students and lecturers to know their health status, especially for those who may not have time to go for regular check because to their tight schedule.”

  • Fellowship honours CAMPUSLIFE man at dinner

    The Nigerian Fellowship of Evangelical Students, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) chapter, has held its Final Year Brethren dinner and award night to concluded the activities of the unit for the 2013/2014 academic session.

    The event was held at the Students’ Union Congress hall on campus. The event featured award of excellence to guests and members for their contributions to the growth of the fellowship.

    The Students’ Union president, Kehinde Awosanya, was among the honoree. Awosanya testified to the mercy of God in his life throughout his stay on campus, and thanked the fellowship members for the award.

    Thompson Omoruyi, who represented the zonal president, also praised the efforts of the fellowship members to make it stronger.

    CAMSPUSLIFE correspondent, Oluwafemi Aliu, was also honoured with the Creative Final Year Personality of the year award.

     

  • Fellowship marks 20th anniversary

    From a humble beginning of being the only fellowship with an Academic Secretary in April 1994, the Anglican Students’ Fellowship, University of Benin, Edo State chapter,  has grown in capacity and influence.

    This was explained at the fellowship’s annual anniversary week and alumni reunion, recently held at the All Saints Chapel of the institution.

    It was a week-long event packed with meaningful programmes for her members and the university community. It included prayers for the university and Nigeria, visit to the orphanage, variety nights and Alumni reunion service.

    Speaking on the theme: Arise and shine, Rev Chigozie Anieto explained that it is the will and purpose of God for his children to be shining stars, and of great influence. ‘God is very much interested in your future, so you must not fail. You must as well be alive to effect the changes you want to see in your generation.’ He said.

    With the congregation clad in the uniform Ankara wear, the event ended with thanksgiving at the fellowship auditorium.

  • Fellowship hosts students’ summit

    Covenant Christian Centre has organised a conference for Nigerian undergraduates with the theme: “Making the most of your stay on campus.” The event, which held at the Covenant Place, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos suburb, was witnessed by top-notch motivational speakers who addressed participants on the realities of post-graduate life.

    An official of Airtel Nigeria, Mr Francis Ebuhei, said life was a personal journey where everyone would be responsible to what they get from it.

    The organisers told CAMPUSLIFE that the aim of the workshop was to bring together youths from various institutions to learn the winning formula for success in today’s world.

    Speakers at the summit included the Head, Learning and Development Division, Fidelity Bank Plc., Irunna Ejibe; Executive Director of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Obinna Abajue, among others.
