NYSC confirms release of kidnapped female corps member

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nasarawa State chapter, has confirmed the release of a kidnapped Batch A Stream 1 female youth corps member.

The Coordinator, Hajiya Zainab Isah, confirmed the release of the corps member to reporters in Lafia yesterday.

She said the corps member from Abia State, who was kidnapped last Friday at Udege Mbeki community in Kokona Local Government, was released on Sunday.

“She was kidnapped on Friday on her way from bank in company of other corps members.

“They were robbed and after that she was abducted and taken away. She was the only female among them,” Isah said.

She said NYSC, in collaboration with the government, security agencies and the traditional ruler of Osu Ojiri, Alhaji Halilu Bala-Usman, swung into action to effect her release.

“Governor Tanko Al-Makura played a vital role in securing the release of the corps member through the monarch, whom he communicated with, because the incident occurred in his domain.

“The governor directed the police commissioner to ensure the corps member was unhurt and untouched.

“I thank the governor for his fatherly role in securing the freedom of the corps member.

“I also thank the Osu Ojiri of Undege Mbeki, security agencies and the vigilance group. I just want to thank everybody for the roles they played.

“I’m grateful to NYSC Director-General Brig.- Gen. Sule Kazaure. He also played an important role. He gave me moral support,” the coordinator said.

She refuted an allegation that the corps member was defiled by her kidnappers,

Isah said medical investigations carried out at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi proved otherwise.

“The corps member was never raped. I have visited the hospital with her and have the result proving she is medically okay.

“I want to dispel the rumour that she was raped. Most importantly, the corps member has said she was not raped.

“Yes, she was beaten up, but was never raped because at the time she was kidnapped, she was bleeding.

“When they saw that she was menstruating, they didn’t want her again and started beating her up. I can authoritatively tell you she was rescued unhurt,” she said.

The coordinator said the corps member would be taken to the Government House to see the governor before any further step would be taken.

Police spokesman Idrisu Kennedy confirmed the rescue of the corps member.

He said efforts were on to arrest the kidnappers and prosecute them.

It was gathered that the 2016 Batch B Stream II corps member died of asthmatic attack last Friday.
The deceased undergoing the compulsory orientation, a core programme of the scheme, breathed her last at the Clinic Department of the camp.
Though her colleague said the deceased corps member came to camp with her inhaler to ward off crisis, it was not certain what became of the inhaler when her attack started.
A source, who spoke in confidence, however said the victim suffered her first attack a week after arrival at the camp but was assisted by colleagues.
“My friend told me that when the deceased suffered her first attack in camp, she helped her to overcome it.
“But we don’t know what happened when a similar attack that took her life happened,” she said.
Some persons also claimed that the deceased was both asthmatic and epileptic saying she was not fit to be at the camp.
Her remains were said to have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
The Director-General, NYSC, Brig.-Gen. SuleKauzure, was said to have dispatched a delegation of senior NYSC officials from the headquarters in Abuja to Kaiama.
The officials, it was gathered, arrived on Friday evening and immediately commenced investigations to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of the corps member.
NYSC officials in Bayelsa State however kept mute over the development saying the headquarters had taken over the matter.
Last year, a female corps member became sick at the camp but later died at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
The latest incident occurred few days after Kauzure, who was represented by the NYSC Director, Procurement, Mr. YakubuJok, visited the Kaiama camp.
The D-G advised youths absorbed in the scheme to take their personal security seriously.
Kauzure lamented that corps members were increasingly exposing themselves to danger by embarking on unauthorised night journeys, regretting that some corps members lost their lives with others sustaining grave bodily injuries because of indiscipline.
He appealed to them to always stay at the places they were posted to carry out their one year national assignments.
Kauzure also urged the youths to embrace patriotism and discipline, adding that the scheme was designed to inculcate values of citizenship and leadership in them.

Members of the House of Representatives have opened investigations into the death of Miss Elechi Chiyerum, a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Bayelsa State.
Miss Chiyerum was confirmed dead at a hospital in Yenagoa after she was found sick at the orientation camp in Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokoma, area of the state.
Members of the House Committee on Youth Development, led by their Chairman, Mr. Segun Adekola, were in Yenagoa, the state capital, to determine the circumstances that led to her death.
The members met with the governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, and later toured the orientation camp where they held talks with the state Coordinator, NYSC, Mr. Anthony Ekeocha, and other officials.
While addressing the delegation, Dickson called on Nigerians and government at all levels to treat corps members in their domains with honour and dignity.
He said the government and people of Bayelsa State had always accorded corps members the love and respect they deserved because of their importance to nation-building.
He lamented the death of the corps member describing the incident as sad and unfortunate.
The governor further condemned the unwarranted attacks on corps members serving in some parts of the country.
Reinstating his commitment to the welfare of corps members Dickson promised that the permanent orientation camp in the state would soon be ready.
After touring the facilities at Kaiama Orientation Camp, Adekola, the leader of the delegation said there was an urgent need for the federal government to begin an upward review of the welfare packages for corps members.
He said they were in the state to investigate the death of the corps member and to determine if funds appropriated for the scheme were properly utilized.
While addressing corps members at the camp, he said the N500 daily feeding and N19,500 monthly stipends were inadequate consideration in the face of biting economic hardship and rising cost of goods and services.
He said: “We have come and seen the challenges facing corps members. We also know that the N500 per day for meal is inadequate.
“We equally know that the N19, 500 at this time of recession is inadequate. The prices of goods and others are high. The N19.500 is nothing to write home about. Something will be done.”
Ekeocha told the committee that 1578 corps members, comprising 866 males and 712 females, were registered for Batch B.
He regretted the sudden death of the female corps member and said they were always in the habit of referring sick members to medical facilities.
Other members of the committee are Iboro Ekanem, Deputy Chairman; Asabe Bashir, Akintayo Amere, Segun Ogunwuji and Mukaila Kassim.

  • Corps member escapes rape at NASS

A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) attached to the National Assembly narrowly escaped being raped on Thursday.

The fair complexioned lady was seen crying profusely at the White House wing of the National Assembly complex at about 5:45pm

She told passers-by at the Senate wing of the White House that she narrowly escaped being raped.

She said that a heavily built man accosted her while she went to ease herself at one of rest rooms in the upper legislative chamber.

The corps member said she was about to undress herself when she saw a man entering the rest room.

The lady said she sensed that it was unusual for a man to enter the room specifically designed for women.

“As the man approached me, I had no option than to raise the alarm and the man took to his heels,” she said.

She wondered why security operatives at the National Assembly did not respond quickly to her call and apprehend the man.
