    FCT, Kwara, Benue to experience thunderstorms, rains Sunday evening -FEMD

    FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), on Saturday disclosed that thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the early evening of Sunday the 8th of June.

    FEMD said states contiguous to the FCT as well as Kwara, Benue and Plateau States are expected to experience similar weather conditions.

    Following the early warning issued by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency NiMET, the  Ag Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department, (FEMD), Engr, Abdulrahman Mohammed appealed to residents to avoid driving into a pool of water.

    A statement issued by the Head Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, FEMD boss said; “Please always wait for the water level to recede before driving during a heavy downpour “.

    He appealed to residents to take adequate precaution and to switch off electrical appliances during the rain.

    He said; “On Monday the 9th of June, morning thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the FCT, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa States.

    “Similarly, on Tuesday parts of the FCT, Nasarawa,Nigeria, Benue and Plateau States are expected to experience early evening thunderstorms with rain”.

    Meanwhile, the FEMD boss has emphasized the need for residents to always use  the 112 emergency toll free number in the event of an emergency.

    FEMD rescues three labourers trapped in Abuja manhole

    The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) rescued three men trapped in a blocked manhole in the Guzape District of the Federal Capital City on Christmas Day. 

    Acting Director-General of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed reported that the men were rescued by a combined team of FEMD, the FCT Fire Service, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

    Mohammed explained that the FEMD Search and Rescue Team rescued two of the trapped men, who labourers were clearing debris that had clogged the manhole leading to a central sewage system. 

    A buildup of trapped methane gas caused an explosion, suffocating both men inside the manhole. A volunteer who attempted to rescue the men also became trapped.

    “One of the rescued men is receiving treatment at Wuse District Hospital, while the other two are at Asokoro District Hospital,” Mohammed said.

    Commending the emergency responders for averting what could have been a Christmas Day tragedy, Mohammed advised residents to refer the maintenance of public infrastructure to the relevant agencies and departments. He also appealed to residents to use the 112-emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.

    FEMD rescues over 3,500 lives, boosts disaster preparedness in 2024 

    The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) rescued over 3,500 lives from various emergencies in 2024, showcasing a remarkable milestone in its disaster response operations. 

    Speaking during a press briefing, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed highlighted the department’s milestones, challenges, and plans for 2025. 

    He noted that FEMD had successfully managed incidents such as flooding, building collapses, fire outbreaks, road crashes, and even attempted suicides. 

    Mohammed credited the department’s success to proactive measures, including collaborations with local divers, traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders, which helped mitigate the impact of disasters. 

    In addition to rescue operations, FEMD introduced new initiatives aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response capabilities, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in the Federal Capital Territory. 

    “Emergency management must be a bottom-up approach involving traditional rulers and local government authorities. This synergy has yielded positive results,” he said. 

    Mohammed stated: “In 2024, the department conducted over 165 emergency responses, rescuing 75 individuals from floods and 105 from collapsed buildings. 

    “While FEMD successfully saved 1,230 persons from fire incidents without fatalities, four lives were lost to building collapses and floods. Additionally, FEMD provided relief materials to affected communities, including displaced persons and households impacted by disasters. 

    “FEMD also collaborated with stakeholders such as the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and traditional rulers to mitigate the impact of disasters. Early warning systems and community-based disaster management approaches proved vital in addressing flood risks, which affected several areas in the FCT, including Angwan Hakimi in Orozo, Dutse Makaranta, and Nyanya.

    “Notably, the department saved 105 individuals from building collapses, although four fatalities were recorded in incidents at Guzape, Garki 2, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe. FEMD also responded to earth tremors in Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama Extension, which left over 2,000 residents traumatised. 

    “In its drive to improve preparedness, FEMD engaged schools through sensitisation campaigns, established disaster management clubs, and conducted anti-terrorism simulation exercises. The department also partnered with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) to enhance disaster response through geospatial data sharing and early warning systems. 

    “FEMD distributed relief materials to disaster victims, including food items to 200 persons living with disabilities and Ramadan packages to internally displaced persons in Kabusa and Bwari. Additionally, the department donated hospital equipment to Kuje District Hospital and school beds to Government Secondary School, Kuje.” 

    Looking ahead, Engr. Mohammed revealed plans to leverage technology for disaster management, including satellite-based risk assessment and real-time data monitoring to improve response time. 

     “Our goal is to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in disaster response. We will deepen collaboration with traditional institutions and area councils while expanding campaigns on traditional and social media,” he added. 

    Despite challenges such as obsolete equipment, inadequate funding, and limited office space, he said, FEMD remains committed to its mission. 

    Mohammed reassured FCT residents of the department’s dedication to protecting lives and property while calling on stakeholders, including the media, for continued support. 

    “Disaster management is a collective responsibility, and with your partnership, we will make the FCT safer for all,” he concluded.
