  • Femi Adesina’s superfluous parallel

    Femi Adesina’s superfluous parallel

JUST when the country was beginning to heave a sigh of relief from  Senator Shehu Sani’s and Aisha Buhari’s allegorical exchange, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, weighs in with his own distinct but needless and sentimental parallel.  Mr Adesina’s intervention was designed to prick the conscience of the president’s opponents, particularly those wishing him dead. It is probably true there are some Nigerians who wish that President Buhari should neither recover from his illness nor return to Nigeria to complete the second half of his mandate. This wish has grated horribly on the nerves of the president’s aides and supporters. But wish or no wish, for a country and leadership that trust in God, why should they be so discomfited by the pet animosities of a few people? Does common sense itself not tell everyone that wishes are not horses?

To respond to this issue of wishing the president dead, the umpteenth time, Mr Adesina takes refuge in the Bible with a reference to a parallel in 2 Samuel 16 where someone who wished the deposed and distressed King David evil was eventually requited with evil after the king had been restored to his old glory. The malfeasant young man was Shimei, the son of Gera, from the House of King Saul, who nursed extreme bitterness over the death of his father and King David’s assumption of office.

Mr Adesina should know by now that no ruler ever gets 100 percent support. It is impossible. In fact, some of the opposition would dedicate themselves unconscionably and irrationally to defeating the president lawfully. President Buhari, his principal, will always have that kind of acidic opposition, no matter how that opposition is construed, many of them heartily wishing him dead. Presidential aides should not be bothered by this, let alone responding so elaborately to every drivel by inconsequential and bad-mannered opponents. Aides should concentrate on getting the president to enact policies and measures that would endear him to as many Nigerians as possible. Drawing sentimental parallels from anywhere, even in a hyperbolically religious country like Nigeria, is superfluous. The president’s fate is not in anyone’s wish; it is in the hands of God whom they have put their trust in.

    Expect more floods – Minister

The Federal Government has approved the release of N1.6 billion to flood victims in 16 states of the federation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

According to him, the fund will be taken from Ecological funds in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He said the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has been directed to release the N1.6 billion to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the 16 affected states.

He said: “The Acting President has approved the sum of N1.6 billion as immediate intervention for victims of flood in 16 states.

“The states are Ekiti, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Oyo, Lagos, Plateau, Sokoto, Edo and Bayelsa.

“So, 16 states ravaged by flood and the sum of N1.6billion had been approved for immediate release as relief for people in those states and communities involved.

“The money is going to be taken from the Federal Government Ecological Fund Account at the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Minister of Finance is to release the fund directly to NEMA, which is, National Emergency Management Agency,’’ he said

Meanwhile, federal government has warned Nigerians to expect more flooding following the delay in rainfall which had caused long duration of torrential downpour in major urban cities.

The government also said the monsoon wind which is a strong prevailing wind bringing rain from West Africa coast around June 22 to September and October would bring a lot of rains to the land along with sea rise that could lead to increase in the amount of water in low lying coastal areas of Lagos and other states.

Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, said this in Abuja while briefing journalists on flood situation in the country.

Adamu said the flood would spread to 30 states and over 100 local government areas in the country.

He added that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) would continue to monitor the flow of surface water and issue alerts when necessary.

He said: “Summary of the alert is that approximately 30 states and over 100 LGAs are categorized as high flood risk areas and therefore should expect flooding.

“The rains did not start early this year, thereby possibly causing long duration torrential downpour and causing unexpected urban/flash floods in areas with non-existing or inadequate drainage system in the country.

“The flow of surface water are being monitored by NIHSA while alerts will be issued. Also, sensitization of the entire nation by visiting the grassroots will soon be embarked upon.”

Adesina mourns former CPS to Abacha, David Attah

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has described the news of the passing of Chief David Ogaba Attah, former Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as a huge loss to the nation and the media industry.

In a condolence message to the Attah family, Adesina lauded Chief Attah’s distinguished service to the nation as a journalist, politician and opinion leader.

The Presidential Spokesman, in a statement by the Deputy Director (Information), Attah Esa, noted that the Benue-born veteran journalist, not only carved a niche for himself in the course of his journalism career, he was also a strong voice in the nation’s political terrain during his stint in the House of Representatives in the Second Republic.

Adesina said that the Ondoma of Idomaland will be long remembered for his candid views, measured and mature contributions to national discourse.

He enjoined media professionals and colleagues to draw inspiration from the career of Chief Attah, while urging the family of the departed to take solace in the knowledge that their father lived a fulfilled life.

On behalf of current and former presidential spokespersons, Adesina prayed that Almighty God will comfort the bereaved family, friends and associates, and grant the soul of Chief Attah peaceful rest.

Buhari will bequeath better future to Nigerians – Adesina

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Tuesday assured that President Muhammadu Buhari will bequeath a better future to Nigerian youths.

He called for support of Nigerians to make it happen.

Adesina made the remark while receiving a Golden Leadership Award from the National Youths Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative in Abuja.

Adesina said President Buhari had remained in politics because of his desire to see a new Nigeria emerge for the upcoming generation.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Director (Information) Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Attah Esa, Adesina said ‘‘one of the reasons President Buhari repeatedly contested for the position of the President of Nigeria was to see the country properly take care of young people.

‘‘He strongly believes there should be a better country for the future generation.

‘‘Tell your colleagues to team up with a government that envisages a better future for this country because Nigerians deserve a better future and that is what the President is aspiring to bequeath.”

  • Why El-Zakzaky, Dasuki are in detention

Why El-Zakzaky, Dasuki are in detention

The Buhari administration has not failed Nigerians, the Presidency said yesterday.

Besides, a proper assessment of the government’s performance could only be done at the end of its tenure, officials said.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Laolu Akande fielded questions from reporters at the State House in Abuja. It was a review of the administration’s two years at the helm.

They also spoke on why Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky and Col. Sambo Dasuki are still in detention in spite of court orders for their release.

Adesina said the All Progressives Congress (APC) “has four years to deliver and not two years”.

The person that asked the question said there is a buzz in town. I am sure that you have not conducted a scientific survey that shows you that is a popular position. People can always express their opinions; there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“Like the minister of transportation said recently, the APC did not promise to solve all the country’s problems in one year or two years.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed, just tell them it is too early in the day because it is a four-year term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years.”

TRENDING: This debit alert from GeNs@gtbank.com

On the alarm by Army chief Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai: Adesina said: “The Army has spoken and let us take that position. What the Chief of Army Staff said was a routine warning that goes to military officers – don’t hobnob with politicians –  and the army has explained the position, let’s take that position and not stretch it beyond what the military has said because they are the ones that can give us the definitive position and they have spoken on it.”

Stressing that the masses were happy with President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu said: “If elections were held today, Buhari will win overwhelmingly.  The masses are still with him.

The ordinary Nigerians are the pillars of the Buhari administration and their confidence in his administration has remained unshaken. The whistle-blower policy has excited them. They are happy that their stolen money is being recovered. The masses are happy but those elite whose sources of ill-gotten wealth have been blocked are not.

On why Dasuki and El-Zakzaky are still in detention, Shehu said: ”It is a common thing in all nations of the world that there are matters of public safety.

“The Attorney General and Minister of Justice has made his points here. In all cases, public good should override individual interest.”

He said El-Zak Zaky family members and relatives had unhindered access to him.

“On the issue of El-Zak Zaky, the information we have is that he is being kept more for his own safety than the offences he committed.

”If you set him free today, what do you think will likely be the reactions out there on the streets of Kaduna or in the streets of Zazzau where he comes from?.’’

    RELATED: Travails of El-Zakzaky

He said Dasuki was being held because he had other criminal cases to answer, adding that his release might affect the investigation of cases against him.

On the Chibok girls, Shehu said the government had no peculiar interest in keeping them, stressing that most of them preferred to stay in Abuja and “don’t want to return home.”

“The human rights records of this administration are impeccable; they are unimpeachable. I think we should avoid speaking in general terms. The thing to do is to pinpoint specific cases to buttress assertions that people make and then we can tackle them.”

Shehu defended the power situation, saying: “It is also a mistake to say power has deteriorated under this administration because when we came in 2015, power generation was 3,324MW, it increased to 4,357MW as at August 2015, barely three months after President Buhari came to power and rose to the peak of 5,077MW in 2016, it was the highest power generated in the country.

“At present, the average generation is about 3,000mw. This is as a result of vandalism or gas pipeline infrastructure and also low water in our dams. The power sector is also gaining gradually from the peace in the Niger Delta. Usually, we experience low generation of power during dry season and this is not because of the Buhari administration.

“Government is investing heavily in power and has been licensing a lot of renewable energy projects, which is the future. We are doing what is called energy mix, we are not just doing gas power, we are doing hydro etc.”

On alleged weak prosecution, Akande said: “Our criminal justice system does need a profound and deep reform. The important thing is that this government is working on it. The Acting President has put together a national prosecution coordination team for all the cases to see how in the medium term we can bring some progress but also working on justice sector reforms in the long term, on criminal justice system to strengthen both the investigation and prosecution at the courts. And I know it is going to take a while for us to address it.”

  • Presidency dismisses Coup plot reports

    Presidency dismisses Coup plot reports

Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, has urged Nigerians to ignore the media reports on Coup plot, saying it should not be stretched beyond what the military authorities had said.

Adesina stated this at a media chat with State House correspondents to mark two years of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, what the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Tukur Burutai, said about the issue was a “routine warning that goes to military officers.’’

The presidential aide addressed the correspondents alongside the Senior Special Assistants to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu and Mr Laolu Akande (Office of the Vice-President).

Adesina said: “The Army has spoken and let us take that position. What the Chief of Army Staff said was a routine warning that goes to military officers, don’t hobnob with politicians and the army has explained the position.

“Let’s take that position and not stretch it beyond what the military has said because they are the ones that can give us the definitive position and they have spoken on it.’’

The presidential spokesman also debunked the assertion that the ruling party had failed in fulfilling its political obligations and promises to the electorate in view of the reported hardships being experienced by a cross section of Nigerians.

He maintained that it was unfair to assess the performance of the Buhari’s administration within its first two years.

“People can always express their opinions, there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“The second point is that, when a government via a party is voted into office, it is voted for a four year term under our own democratic arrangement.

“When you have spent two years which is like a midterm, the first half of a game, you don’t then determined that it has succeeded or it has failed.

“No. You can be accused of being atomistic using a small part to determine the whole. You can’t write the report card of this administration when it is just hitting the half way mark, that will not be fair.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed just tell them is too early in the day because is a four year-term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years.’’

Malam Garba Shehu, who spoke on the Human Rights records of the Buhari’s administration, said the records were impeccable.

“The Human rights records of this administration are impeccable, there are unimpeachable. I think we should avoid speaking in general terms.

“The thing to do is to pin point specific cases to buttress assertions that people make and then we can tackle them.

“As we speak to you now, we are not aware that the administration of Muhammadu Buhari is in breach of the constitution of Nigeria with regards to the protection of the rights of Nigerians.

“Journalists in this country ought to bear testimony on this, there is no single journalist that has been expelled from his duty because he has reported or failed to report, there is no single journalist who is in government detention because they have expressed some views that the government does not like.’’

According to Shehu, the Buhari’s administration is complying with the decision of the courts of the land.

“I assure that if anybody tries to do otherwise the president will not allow him to get away with it.’’

Laolu Akande, who spoke on alleged weak prosecution of corruption cases across the country, said: “The truth of the matter is that our criminal justice system does need a profound and deep reform.

“The important thing is that this government is working on it. As a matter of fact now, the Acting President has put together a national coordination prosecution team for all the prosecution trying to see how in the medium term we can bring some progress.

“But also working on judicial sector reforms on the long term on criminal justice system to strengthen both the investigation and prosecution at the courts.

“And I know it is going to take a while for us to address it,” he said.

On food security, Akande revealed that the government had recorded tangible achievements in the nation’s agricultural sector.

According to him, the committee on food crisis is still working, while the government has reduced importation of food items especially rice.

He disclosed that about 40,000 farmers in Kebbi state had become millionaires due to government favourable agricultural policies.(NAN)

Buhari has not failed Nigerians, says Presidency

As the current administration plans to mark two years on Monday, the Presidency on Tuesday insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari has not failed Nigerians.

The Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu and the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, were fielding questions from journalists after a Press Briefing marking the commencement of activities to showcase second anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Adesina said that Nigerians should wait for four years in order to properly assess the Buhari’s administration.

According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has four years to deliver and not two years.

On the question claiming that the APC has failed, he said “The person that asked the question said there is a buzz in town, I am sure that you have not conducted a scientific survey that shows you that is a popular position. People can always expresses their opinions, there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“You can’t write the report card of this administration when it is just hitting the half way mark that will not be fair. The term is four years and the promises are going to be stretched over that four year period. Like the Minister of Transportation said recently, APC did not promise to solve all the country’s problems in one year or two years.

“The mandate the party has is four years and it is pacing itself as it goes along and I am sure that by the end of those four years we will have a lot more to record. It is not by a sudden flight, it will not come by a snap of a finger but will the promises be fulfilled? Yes, I believe it will be fulfilled.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed just tell them it is too early in the day because it is a four year-term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years,” he added.

On job creation, he said that the government is mainly focusing on creating enabling environment.

He said that PenCom appointment is a developing issue and being looked into.

On selective anti-corruption war, he said that there are no friends and no foes in the anti-graft battle.

According to him, anyone who has questions to answer would be queried.

He also explained that the status quo remains on the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal and suspended Director-general of National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke, just as Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had declared.

On Boko Haram regrouping, he said that the remnants of Boko Haram would be dealt with by the Army.

Urging Nigerians to look at the brighter side of issues, he said that there many failed suicide bombing than those that succeeded.

Stressing that the masses are happy with President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu said the President will win any Presidential election conducted today.

“If elections were held today, Buhari will win overwhelmingly.  The masses are still with him.” he said

Asked when the ordinary man will start feeling the impact of the government, he said “The ordinary Nigerians are the pillars of Buhari administration and their confidence in his administration has remained unshaken. The whistle-blower policy has excited them. They are happy that their stolen money is being recovered. The masses are happy but those elites whose sources of ill-gotten wealth have been blocked would not.”

He gave reasons why the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki is still being held in detention.

Shehu insisted that Dasuki was being kept in custody in spite of court orders because there are more cases against him that are being investigated.

He urged Nigerians to allow the agencies to do their jobs.

On the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMAN), Sheik Ibrahim El-Zak Zaky , he said that he was being kept in custody to ensure his safety.

He explained that his family members and relatives have unhindered access to him.

On Chibok girls, he said, government does not have any peculiar interest in keeping the girls, stressing that most of them prefer to stay in Abuja and don’t want to return home.

Speaking on Human rights records of the administration, Shehu said “The Human rights records of this administration are impeccable, thry are unimpeachable. • Those wishing Buhari dead are inhuman, says Adesina

Those wishing Buhari dead are inhuman, says Adesina

A furious Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday lashed out at those wishing the president dead.

He dubbed them swindlers, inhuman, evil, wicked and liars.

Adesina, in a statement, wondered why some people take delight in wishing the President dead.

Citing last weekend’s rumour of the death of the president especially in the social media, he said: “They showed their pernicious hands again last Sunday, and have been on the prowl since then, roaring like a lion, seeking who to devour.

“Purveyors of death they are, and they have killed President Buhari many times over, cloned the websites of international media houses to announce the hoax, but their wishes did not become horses, so they remain stranded, with nothing to ride.

“Between January 19 this year, when the President first proceeded on vacation, and March 10, when he returned, they had announced his demise many times.

“They even created apocryphal images and footages to back up their inhuman claims, but God showed them He was the ultimate. The Real Deal, the Special One.

“President Buhari came back alive, and disclosed that he would still return to London at a later date for medical follow-up. He eventually left on the night of Sunday, May 7.

“They saw the Deux ex machina, the Invisible Hands of God, between January and March, but they are so steeped and marooned in unbelief, evil wishes and malediction, that they have started all over again. Last Sunday, they cloned popular websites for the umpteenth time, using them to announce the figment of their diseased imagination. They learnt nothing, and forgot nothing from the immediate past experience.”

He said that while the vocal minority indulged in their wishful thinking, “millions upon millions of Nigerians love President Buhari. They love his simplicity, his forthrightness, incorruptibility, love of country, and many other virtues.

“And they are praying. Bombarding heaven with petitions. Baba o, Baba o, Baba o. Olorun da Baba si fun wa, Baba o, Baba o, Baba o. Olorun da Baba si fun wa. Oh God, spare our Baba, the father of the country. Spare him for us, O Lord we pray. And Heaven is listening to the supplications. We await the full manifestation.

“Millions of us can follow Baba blindfolded into battle. We love him that much, and it is within our rights. But have you seen a man ever loved by everybody? Show me.

“Even if you feed an entire city daily, some people still won’t like your guts. So, those who are not Buharists have a right to their convictions. But must any human being be hateful to the point of wishing another person dead, and indeed broadcasting a death that never happened?”

Not done with them, Adesina added: “Shame. Shame upon evil wishers, purveyors of lies and wickedness. Do they have blood running in their veins at all? Do they realize that wishing another person dead, is sin before God? Yet they go to churches, mosques, and other worship houses. Who are they worshiping? The Unknown God.

“Why do some people, a tiny but vocal minority, wish the President dead? Do they know that if God wills, the man they wish dead could outlive them by many years?

“There was a lady who was very active on social media in 2015, before the presidential election of that year. She was in the league of anti-Buhari elements. Oh, he was too old. Oh, he was sickly. Yes, he would soon die.

“The lady was rabidly pontifical in her convictions, parading herself as someone with a charmed life, who would live forever. And then, it happened! Sometime last year, she died! When I saw the news online, I just shook my head, and prayed for the repose of her soul. I did not gloat. No need to. Not in her wildest imagination could she have thought that she would pre-decease President Buhari.

“But who has the final say? Jehovah has the final say. The breath of man is in his nostrils, and God can decide to extinguish his candle at anytime. Jehovah has the final say. It is not by age, not by how healthy you seem, or how sickly you are. It’s a lesson some people have not learnt. They learn nothing, and forget nothing.

“Back to the earlier question. Why do some people want their own President dead? Why do they want the eclipse of a man who is actuated by nothing other than love for his country? Why have they constituted themselves into enemies of national progress, haters of all that is good? Why do they prefer the dark jungle of infamy to the light of a clear and bright day, signposted by freedom from rapacity and lootocracy? Who then are these enemies?

“Our enemies are the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places that seek bribes and demand 10 percent, those that seek to keep the country divided permanently so that they can remain in office as Ministers or VIPs at least, the tribalists, the nepotists, those that make the country look big for nothing before international circles, those that have corrupted our society and put the Nigerian political calendar back by their words and deeds.”

“Those were the words of Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, after the country’s first military coup in 1966. You may like Nzeogwu, or you may not, depending on how you view his actions and inactions. But you can hardly deny the veracity of what he said. And 51 years later, the words still ring true.

“The enemies of Buhari are the political profiteers. To them, political office is not about service, but about making profit. Ordinary people can go to hell, and stay there. Personal profit is the name of the game.

“The swindlers, too. Enemies of righteousness and transparency. They swindle man, and even try to swindle God. Of course, they wouldn’t want a new sheriff in town. They’d rather shoot him, and sing the reggae song: ‘I shot the sheriff…’

Those that seek bribe and demand 10 percent. Enemies. Only that they are not satiated by 10 percent again. They take the entire 100 percent, and leave the country prostrate. But when a Daniel comes to judgment, and hurls them before the law, knowing neither friend nor foe, they wish that he dies. Gerrout, so that business as usual continues, they shout.”

He prayed that Lord may “spare our President” and that “those who learn nothing, and forget nothing, be purged of all evil.”
