  • My objective is to do best for Nigeria, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday reiterated his main objective in contesting elections four times and ending up in Supreme Court three times before he finally won the election in 2015.

Receiving retired army generals, admirals, marshals and former military governors/administrators who paid him a courtesy call at State House, Abuja, the President declared: “God has made this country great. We have human and material resources, and may God continue to give us the right leaders. My objective is very clear, and I will continue to do my best.”

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the President recalled what he said in his days as military head of state that; “We have no other country but Nigeria. We will stay here and salvage it together,” President Buhari noted that even if one was blessed enough to send children for training abroad,

“After such training, they will still have to come back here. We must, therefore, give our best for our country. The patriotism imbued in us by the military will ever remain relevant. Let’s do our best for this country,” he said.

Describing Nigeria as “a fabulous country,” the President said if it were not so, “the country could not have survived the damage done to it materially and morally in the past,” glorifying God that after 30 months civil war, with over two million lives lost, “we are still one country.”

Buhari prayed that Nigeria would not lack people who can exploit its human and material resources.

He added “The higher you go in Nigeria, the hotter it becomes, and not the other way round. But I can’t complain. I tried so hard to be here three times, ending up at the Supreme Court. So, I can’t complain over anything I am going through now.”

He described the military as an institution that gives amazing opportunities to know the country, its different peoples and cultures, “and I am very grateful that you have claimed me back as one of your own. I was governor of North-east, which is now six states, Minister of Petroleum for over three years, head of state; I was arrested and detained, but did not lose my rank, because nothing was found against me.”

Leader of the delegation, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, who was military governor in Borno, and later military administrator of Lagos State, said the retired top officers thought it right to visit the President, “to say that you have represented your constituency very well. You announced a simple three-point agenda upon assumption of office namely security; fighting corruption, and the economy. You have kept your words as an officer and a gentleman.”

Marwa added: “We the retired armed forces officers, representing 99.9% of our colleagues say that we are proud of you; proud to be associated with your administration; and proud to witness this era of Nigeria rising again under your able leadership. We support you fully and totally in the presidential elections next week and will do whatever we can within the law to contribute to your emergence as the victor in the election in order to take Nigeria to the next level.”

The most senior of the retired officers, Vice Admiral Jubrila Ayinla, a former Chief of Naval Staff, who said future generations, would acquit President Buhari “most creditably,”

He added: “On behalf of the generals here today, I congratulate you on the tremendous work done by this administration, and wish to state unequivocally that we are proud of you and fully behind you in the presidential elections next week. We pledge our full support and continued loyalty.”

The delegation was made of one Vice Admiral, two Lt-Generals, 15 Major Generals, two Rear Admirals, eight Air Vice-Marshals, 12 Brigadier-Generals, three Commodores, nine Air Commodores, and 17 former military governors/administrators, among others.

  • Pray for us, Femi Adesina tells Christians

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, has solicited prayers for believers in positions of authority to glorify God while discharging their duties.

He spoke at a special “Breakfast meeting with Adesina” organised by the Christian Press Association of Nigeria in Lagos last week.

The event tagged The Christian in Government: Issues and perspectives attracted Christians in the media.

Also in attendance were Chairman Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Lagos Branch Bishop Sola Ore; General Overseer Faith Revival Apostolic Church, Apostle Taiwo Adenuga and President Journalists for Christ(JFC) Lekan Otufodunrin, among others.

Adesina pointed out though every governmental position portends temptations, Christians are expected to shine as light and be good role models.

He urged believers to lift up their counterparts in government to God for grace to overcome besetting temptations.

He lamented many Christians criticise believers in corridors of power but offer little or no prayer for them to remain strong in the Lord and end their journey well.

According to him: “I’m very happy when I go my church and they assure they are praying for me and that I will end well.

“This prayer gives me a lot of courage and confidence that God is with me and I will end well.”

Adesina who said his position as Special Assistant to The President does not warrant him hoodwinking Nigerians assured he has never lied on the job.

He emphasised he has never lied to Nigerians and he would not lie by virtue of his faith as a Christian, knowing that all liars will go to hell.

He also called on Christians to participate in politics, adding they would be expected to be Christ ambassadors and live above board.

He dispelled the notion Nigeria will be Islamised, assuring the nation will maintain its status quo as a secular state.

Adesina assured Nigerians that Buhari has given his words on release of Leah Sharibu, who is being held captive by Boko Haram sect for refusal to deny her Christian faith.

He reiterated the President would never renege on his promises.

“President Buhari has given his word that Leah Sharibu would be released and he would do everything he could to bring her out.  He would do it,” he stressed.

Apostle Adenuga, whose church hosted the gathering, charged church leaders to continue to preach the truth and lay off every form of compromise within the body of Christ.

“Every minister of the gospel should make frantic effort to remain forthright and committed to the task of evangelism and discipleship that will prepare men fit for heaven.

“I still live in a rented apartment. My ultimate goal is to be the most righteous, truthful and faithful pastor in the world.

“I want to invade Europe and the world with the gospel of Jesus, not just by my prayer but because of my transparent lifestyle,” he declared.

CPAN’s President Bola Adewara said the meeting was not for political discussion but to encourage Christians to participate in politics with a view to shining as light in a country enmeshed in corruption.

  • Buhari shifts Zamfara campaign rally

*We’ll campaign for you, Marafa tells Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has postponed his campaign rally earlier scheduled for Zamfara State on Sunday.

The postponement of the rally is linked to the crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had also released the final list of candidates for the March 2 Governorship and State House of Assembly election without any name for APC Governorship candidate for Zamfara State.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina confirmed the postponement.

Speaking with State House correspondents on the latest development, Senator kabiru Marafa, said “I am not aware of the cancellation of the APC Zamfara rally; honestly because I was not told. As I said, I just submitted a proposal which I think will serve the interest of our party, the president and our people.

“We don’t have candidates for now because of the political impasse that characterised Zamfara State in the last few months and the president is billed to be in Zamfara on Sunday, Feb. 3

“Because of the rumple between disagreeing parties, we felt it is better Mr President suspends his visit to Zamfara. After all, we are there; we can campaign for him; he knows us; he knows our individual capacities; there is no point bringing all the factions under one umbrella, because once the president is there, if you like the president and you are with him, you will like to show your face.

“However, we feel it is avoidable; but you cannot come to the president with just one single suggestion. So. I just put my opinion across; that if it is a must; maybe the party has fixed Feb. 3 for the visit, then we want to be excused because there is no way President Muhammad Buhari will go to Zamfara and my face is not seen and people will not ask questions and I think it is not fair just to be absent like that.

“We are not doing what we are doing to impress anybody; we have already gotten all the necessary trust and belief from Mr President even if he is not there, we will do the right thing.

“But if the party or the Presidential Campaign Council feel they must be in Zamfara on Sunday, we and our supporters want to be excused and we will conduct our own rally for the president on a different date and we will televise it live on NTA so that everybody can see; so let everybody show his support in Zamfara not to come together and then everybody will be claiming victory that I pulled this crowd; let everybody stand on his own.

“The most important thing is that we all believe in Mr President and we all like him and we will support him and we want him to win; so let us work individually, and Feb. 16, we will all converge on the box and show what we can do but let the people of Nigeria see us individually.” he added

On way forward, he said “The way forward like we proposed before the State High Court in Zamfara that heard complaints from the governor and his side. The governor went to court and said he conducted primary elections, we joined the case and said no, you didn’t conduct elections because you don’t have the right; the constitutional powers to do so; it is not the size of your office that determines what you can do; it is the constitutions that specifies your functions and responsibilities.

“State governors cannot conduct elections, state party chapters cannot conduct elections, so nobody except the National Working Committee of the political party especially our own–that is specifically mentioned in the constitution.

“So, only the political party can conduct primary elections. So, we felt that APC needed to be represented; the people of Zamfara State needed to be given choice and they say variety is the spice of life; the more the variety, the better for the people.

“However, that variety should not just come because a political party feels they must be there, no. Justice must prevail; you cannot exclude some people and claim that APC should not be included, no.

“We asked the court that APC could not conduct primaries in Zamfara not because they cannot or they failed to do so. The issue was that there was a subsisting court order; this crisis started from the congresses that were conducted in April last year; two factions emerged—Yari had his own party executives, I have my own party executives.

“However, the NWC then cleared the governor’s side and recognised it and we went to court that the process was flawed; that we were disenfranchised and we will not agree.

“The court looked at the complaints because primary elections were approaching that time; it gave an order that both Marafa and the other faction should stay away from anything that has to do with party executives at the local level; so what that means is–the NWC only sends a panel of maybe 7, 10, 14 people but we require 441 local staff to conduct the primaries across the 147 wards of the state.

“The first attempt on Oct. 3, we agreed that since these factions will not participate, how do we get staff? So, we said let’s use the Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT). So, NUT provided the staff but however as the process began and the government saw it was losing, they unleashed mayhem; there was violence.

“The chairman cancelled the elections. On the 7th when they came back, the NUT compromised somehow; they were put under pressure because they are under the state government.

“So, we could not agree on the local organising committee that is the local staff. This is actually what stopped APC from conducting primaries. We now asked the court, the reason why we could not do was because there was no local staff; now that primary elections are over in all the states of the federation, APC can bring in staff from anywhere to conduct the primary election; so we asked the court, mandate APC to conduct fresh primaries and ask INEC to collect the result.

“This is what we did, but the governor and his side did not want that because they cannot face the people in any election. They know if there are primaries, they will lose; so they now prayed to the court that prayer should not be granted. And the judge in his own wisdom granted their own prayers and rejected that part of the prayer.

“So, we are now before the appeal court to say that Appeal Court should reconsider the judgement and give APC new lease of life; allow APC to conduct primaries; just one day is okay. We conduct primaries and submit the result to INEC.” he said

He also expressed the hope that the Appeal Court will do justice to the people of Zamfara and to the various aspirants that purchased the forms at a very high cost.
