  • Niger APC deserts Bago for Gbajabiamila, Lawan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and members-elect of the House of Representatives in Niger State have dashed the hope of member representing Chachanga constituency Mohammed Bago of becoming the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

At a meeting on Monday evening in Government convened by Governor Abubakar Bello, the state decided to throw its weight behind Femi Gbajabiamila for Speakership and Ahmed Lawan for the Senate President.

Bago, representing Chanchaga constituency in the House of Representatives, is one of the key contenders for speakership of the 9th House of Representatives.

Niger APC’s chairman, Engineer Jibril Imam, said the state have decided to follow the stance of the party, saying the position of APC’s national leadership on who emerges leaders of the 9th Assembly stands.

“Going by what happened during the tenure of the 8th National Assembly, the party at all level decided to reach a middle ground to enable us present a formidable front on the matter,” he stated.

Imam said the meeting was a follow up to an earlier one by all APC state chairmen and Governors from the North Central states in Abuja.

He pointed out the Minna meeting was attended by serving and elected members from the state who unanimously adopted the two candidates for the positions respectively.

He further said that the endorsement was to avert the reoccurrence of the 8th Assembly, which was unpalatable and slowed down the progress of the nation in the last four years.

“We are loyal party members and have resolved to toe the position of the party by endorsing Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan as the Senate President of the 9th Assembly and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the 9th Assembly.

“Our experience in the 8th Assembly is not palatable and it has  slow down our progress in the last 4 years and we don’t want a repeat of that,” he reiterated.

  • APC adopts 8th assembly zoning formula to have Gbajabiamila as speaker

The Chief Whip House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Duguwa has explained the rationale behind APC’s choice of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, as done against the will of the party in the 8th Assembly arrangement.

Alhassan Ado Doguwa who won his fourth House of Representatives seats from Tudunwada/Doguwa Federal Constituency, said he was going for the post of the Majority Leader as part of the original arrangement of the ruling party.

Speaking to Reporters on Tuesday in Kano, Doguwa insisted that, “it is apparent that the party is considering the original zoning formula suggested in the 8th Assembly, which had at that time Femi Gbajabiamila from Southwest as Speaker, M.T Monguno Deputy Speaker while my humble self as Majority Leader”.

He opined that the Northwest having got the highest number of elected members at the lower legislative chambers, the 9th House of Representatives should give northwest the position of the deputy Speaker as well as the majority leader.

Doguwa noted that public service delivery is not the same as providing privately made goods and services to market, “The public accountability is not the same as profit margin, because there are different forces involved which must be understood and improve if we must serve the public better”.

Duguwa maintained that the 9th National Assembly members needed to use their skills, innovatives and ingenuity in taking the nation to the next level.

” We must focus energy and creativity on getting things done, as leaders we must be faithful honour national call, meeting the needs of our Citizens, schools, water, roads, healthcare and shelter “.

He warned that in this level, government in collaboration with the National Assembly must sure that government  delivered dividends of democracy to  the citizens.

“But no doubts that our nation must always have new challenges the most important of challenges is the challenge of sustainable development and by which a capacity most be build meet the yearnings of the millions of the citizens.

He said his desire is to bring about fundamental changes in public and private sector collaboration in order to move to the next and desired level.

Doguwa promised that as the Nation usher in a new 9th National Assembly his treasure of experience will certainly give vigour and depth in setting a new legislative agenda in pursuit or the Nigeria goals.

“My Leadership and experience are needed to engendered and sustain robust commitment to worthy causes that require effort and sacrifice”,

  • Gbajabiamila being rewarded for hard work, loyalty, says colleague

TO All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives member Magaji Aliyu, the endorsement of Femi Gbajabiamila as speaker of Green Chamber in the Ninth National Assembly is reward for hard work and loyalty.

Aliyu, who is the Director (Mobilisation), Campaign for Femi Gbajabiamila for Speakership, said that Gbajabiamila remains the most competent and qualified member to lead the lower chamber.

He spoke yesterday in Abuja with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The APC had on Tuesday, adopted Gbajabiamila as its candidate for speakership position when President Muhammadu Buhari hosted members-elect to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

However, the decision did not go down well with some party lawmakers in the House as a member, Idris Wase (Plateau), Mohammed Bago (Niger) and John Dyegh (Benue), among others, insisted on vying for the position.

Aliyu, representing Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency of Jigawa, said that Gbajabiamila was presently the most competent and qualified member to lead the lower chamber.

He, therefore, said that it was not a surprise that Buhari and the APC backed his candidacy.

The lawmaker said: “Nobody wins election on his own; we all won on the platform of the party, and, all over the world, a party can endorse and individuals can also endorse a candidate.

“Mr President and the party have endorsed him; it is never because of the North-East or South-West factor. It is because of competency; he is competent and qualified.”

Aliyu said that although other members of the party have the right to vie for the position, such member would be punished for his or her disloyalty.

He said: “Any member can run for the speakership position but that is disloyalty. We will tag him to be a disloyal member and he will be punished for disloyalty.

“Femi is being rewarded for hard work, commitment, honesty and above all, loyalty. So disloyalty will be punished.”

Aliyu, who said that he was fully in support of the Lagos lawmaker’s candidacy, explained: “All over the world, the party dictates.

“Nigeria is part of the world. It is not about South, East, North or West; it is about our collective democracy and collective heritage.

“Let the institution grow; let the best person lead; Femi is the most competent now and the most qualified.”

The lawmaker noted that though there were sentiments regarding Femi’s geographical identity, “on this effort, he is the best. What are we looking for? We are looking for a person who is knowledgeable, suitable, proficient, skillful and brilliant.

“And, that was what the President said though he said he was not dictating to us. He was pleading with us to take to the advice because he did not want the 2015 scenario to repeat. You could see how we were back-stabbed. Insha Allah, this time, we are going to have it correctly.”

On the system of voting his group preferred to be adopted for electing leaders of the House, he said: “No, we have not reached that stage. Now, we are campaigning, we are talking to members.

“I’m the Director, Mobilisation for the Campaign. We want the members-elect to come and cast their votes willingly because of the party. 2023 is just tomorrow and we want our platform to be sustained.

“So, I am begging my colleagues, even the president begged us. Let’s do what our father wants.”

  • Forum backs APC’s endorsement of Gbajabiamila as Speaker

The Northwest Coordinator of Forum of New Members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibrahim  Almustapha Aliyu, has confirmed the forum’s unanimous support for and endorsement of House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the incoming Ninth Assembly by the party.

Aliyu addressed reporters yesterday in Sokoto on the speakership of the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker said the action of the forum was to uphold party’s supremacy, bolster democracy and ensure stability at the Green Chamber.

Saying the forum has 164 members, he added: “We toe the party’s line; we have endorsed the choice of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the Ninth Assembly.

“We are also restating our unalloyed loyalty and commitment to our great party. This, we do, also to ensure that the laudable policies and programmes of the indefatigable and incorruptible President Muhammadu Buhari sail through in the general interests of Nigerians.”

Aliyu said the forum was taking advantage of its large membership, which constitutes a significant number of the 360-member House.

“This is without the 67 APC returning members. This gives us a comfortable majority.

“The forum aims to prevent the ugly development of the Eighth National Assembly, where we tended to tender on a platter of gold our leadership to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by electing persons with uncertain and unstable loyalty to positions of leadership.

“This virtually affected the noble objectives and policies of the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,” he said.

Aliyu averred that the forum was formed to show appreciation to the invaluable gesture of the party for giving its members the opportunity to run on its platform.

He said: “Having been elected and given the mandate freely by the electorate, we need to pay back. We have to remain loyal as well as uphold the lofty ideals of the APC.”

  • Speakership: Imo Reps-elect back Gbajabiamila

THE House of Representatives member-elect for the Isu-Nkwerre-Njaba-Nwangele Federal Constituency in Imo State, Ugonna Ozurigbo, has said that representatives from the state under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Action Alliance (AA) will obey the decision of the of the APC and  President Muhammadu Buhari on the Speakership of the House of Representatives.

Ozurigbo, who is the Gbajabiamila’s coordinator in the Southeast, noted that apart from representatives elected under the platform of the APC, those from other political parties are also solidly behind Gbajabiamila’s ambition. He said that as a founding member of the APC, he could not be seen to be opposing the decision of the party and that of President Muhammadu Buhari.

  • North central governors, states’ chairman endorse Lawan, Gbajabiamila

The race for the Ninth National Assembly’s  leadership is getting more exciting, with  All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and party chairmen from the Northcentral states endorsing of Senate Leader Ahmad Lawan and House of Representatives leader Femi Gbajabiamila for Senate President and Speaker.

The endorsement was done at a closed-door meeting of stakeholders from the zone at the Plateau State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting was chaired by Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mark Longyen, the session lasted one hour.

The statement reads: “A meeting of governors and the party chairmen from Northcentral on Thursday (yesterday) resolved to go along with the decision of the party’s endorsement of Senator Ahmad Lawan as Senate President and Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 9th National Assembly.

“Since it was a party affair, our decision was in line with the wish of the party and that is why we the governors and state chairmen of our party from the zone are in support of the decision of the party.”

“Our decision and position are only on two issues, while the rest deliberations are ongoing. There is going to be a continuation of our meeting in respect of positions to the Northcentral with both Mr. President and the party.”

At the meeting Governors  Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger); Umaru Tanko Almakura (Nasarawa) Benue State APC governorship candidate Emmanuel Jime.

The state chairman of the APC who attended are:  Jibrin Imam (Niger);  Abdullahi Bello (Kogi); Philips Shekwo (Nasarawa);  Letep Dabang (Plateau); Abba Yaro (Benue) and Abdullahi Usman (FCT).

  • Race for Speaker: 164 APC members-elect back Gbajabiamila

House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila battle for speaker yesterday got a major boost, with the pledge by All Progressives Congress (APC) members-elect to support him.

They promised to abide by party leadership’s decision to zone the Speaker to the South and the choice of Gbajabiamila.

Some 164 lawmakers said it was not right for the North to produce the President of the Senate and be demanding House Speaker.

They argued that zoning is done between the North and the South.

In a statement in Abuja by the Chairman, Tunji Olabunmi Ojo, and the Director-General Dunkwu Nnamdi Chamberlain, the Forum of newly-elected APC members of the House of Representatives said it would be difficult for them to go against the wishes of the party and that of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the Forum, APC zoned President to the North, Vice President to the South, Senate President to the North and Speaker to the South.

It added that those from the Northcentral agitating for the Speaker’s slot were insincere as the North cannot produce the Senate President and the House Speaker.

The Forum expects all the APC elected members to respect the position of the party as they are products of the party.

Their statement reads: “Every member of the party is a product of the party; the party gave everybody the platform to contest and apart from giving platform, the party also gave assistant to members before, during and after elections.

“So, it is expected that as loyal party members, we are supposed to toll the line of the party and now that the party and Mr. President have spoken that Femi should be supported for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, we expect every party faithful to toll that line and support Gbajabiamila to emerge as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“We believe he has the experience; more experienced than other people that are contesting the position. It is not just enough for you to bring out posters. Femi is very qualified; eminently qualified more than any other person.

“Let’s just forget about geopolitical zone; we are talking about competence; we are talking about Nigeria; we are talking about the interest of the downtrodden. Femi would be able to articulate policies that would benefit the generality of the Nigerian masses to compliment the next level agenda of Mr. President.

“Right from time, it has always been North/South. The Presidency is zoned to the North while the vice president is to the South. Now, Senate President has been zoned to the North and Speaker to the South and when it comes to the South, we decide where it should go.

“Politics in this country is played along the line of North and South. Northnentral is North, Northwest is North and Northeast is North. So, the Speaker’s position has been zoned to the South. When we zoned the presidency to the North, Northwest produced the President. So, for those talking about zoning, zoning in this country is done North/South.”

On how the Forum intends to make impact in the election of the Speaker, it said: “Well, the Forum of the newly-elected APC members has 164 representatives; then we have members of other political parties that are also affiliated to this Forum of new members, irrespective of their political parties.

“Some of them were originally APC but because they could not get tickets during the primaries to contest, they moved to other parties. So, we have the same ideology. They are all with us in this struggle to make sure that Femi emerges as the Speaker of House of Representatives.”

The group claimed that the election of Gbajabiamila would prevent what happened in the outgoing Eighth Assembly, where the government’s and the party’s policies.

They said: “We want to ensure that what happened in the 8th Assembly would not repeat itself, where party loyalty was thrown to the dustbin. People went there to fight for their individual pockets.

“We are in this Ninth Assembly to fight for the interest of Nigerians. Nigerians are suffering. How can Mr. President present a budget and for seven months, the budget was still being kept on hold – frustrating the good policies of Mr. President, frustrating the good policies if the party.”

  • 9th NASS: North-Central govs endorse Lawan, Gbajabiamila

The race for the leadership of the 9th National Assembly leadership hot up yesterday with the

All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and party state chairmen from the North-Central on Thursday endorsed the choices of Dr. Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila for Senate President and Speaker.

The endorsement was done at a closed-door meeting of stakeholders from the zone at the Plateau State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting was presided over by the Plateau State Governor, Rt Hon. Simon Lalong.

  • We will back Buhari on NASS leadership – Nwosu

The Imo State governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the 2019 election,  Uche Ñwosu, has assured that the House of Representatives- elect under the platform of the party will support the choice of President Muhammadu Buhari for the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

AA won three Federal seats in Imo State.

Nwosu who spoke with selected journalists in Imo state also stated that the Reps elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, will also queue behind Femi Gbajabiamila in line with President Buhari’s directive.

The AA candidate, who is currently challenging the Imo governorship election in the Tribunal, noted that the party had an alliance with the APC to support President Buhari’s second term, adding that it will still stand by him on the issue of the National Assembly leadership.

According to him, the Southeast played a wrong political card in 2019 and the best way to remedy the situation is to support President Buhari on the current issue of the National Assembly leadership instead of engaging in another political miscalculation that will further complicate its political position.

In his words, “I have been supporting President Buhari before and during the election because of his integrity and uprightness and I will continue to do so irrespective of political or other sentiments.  On the issue of the leadership of the National Assembly, I am with Mr. President one hundred percent,  AA and APC Reps from Omo state will support Femi Gbajabiamila”.

He continued that, “It will not be in the interest of the Igbo to rebel against President Buhari’s choice of the issue of the NASS leadership because as it stands the Southeast can’t get that position by merely shouting, the error has been committed and we should be looking at  the possible ways of remedying it. I remember that our leader, Owelle Rochas Okorocha was shouting during the election on the need to vote President Buhari and remain in mainstream politics but our people refused and preferred regional politics instead.

“In 2019 we played wrong politics like we did in 2015, where we decided to look the other way, forgetting that the main thing comes from the national, so making wild claims and shouting about the leadership of the National Assembly now is a big problem because what did we being to the table in the first place. The state governor Rochas Okorocha has been shounting that we should not make the same mistake we made in 2015 so that we can be part of the system in 2019. So I agree with Mr. President totally, our people in the Federal House of Representatives should listen to whatever the President says, this is the time to support him, we should learn from our mistakes.

“I urge them to support President Buhari, if he has endorsed Femi Gbajabiamila,  they should queue behind him, which is the best thing to do”.

  • New twist in race for Speaker

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking support for Femi Gbajabiamila to become Speaker of the House of Representatives. This is coming at a time more aspirants are showing interest in the race and insisting on realising their ambition, reports Dele Anofi, Abuja.

Lagos APC urges Reps-elect to support Gbajabiamila

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State Chapter has urged party members who have won elections into the House of Representatives to support Mr Femi Gbajabiamila for Speaker.

Mr Abiodun Salami, APC’s Assistant Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, made the appeal yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Salami was reacting to the adoption of Gbajabiamila for Speaker of the lower chamber by the APC’s national leadership on Tuesday.

Gbajabiamila, representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, was re-elected for the fifth term. He is the House Leader.

APC’s National Publicly Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu had announced the adoption of Gbajabiamila in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

He had stated that the party took the decision after extensive deliberations with APC House of Representatives members-elect at a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Banquet Hall of Aso Villa.

Issa-Onilu, in the statement issued shortly after the meeting, also announced that the party had zoned the position of the Deputy Speaker to the North Central.

However, an APC House of Representatives member from Benue State, Mr John Dyegh, hours after the adoption of Gbajabiamila, declared his ambition to be Speaker.

In his speech yesterday in Abuja, Dyegh said he was out to serve the nation and that the North Central zone had been marginalised in the leadership of the House since 1999.

Meanwhile, Salami urged all House of Representatives members-elect under the platform of the party to work with unity of purpose and support the ambition of Gbajabiamila.

He said the party had acted well by adopting Gbajabiamila, saying, “he is an experienced legislator with sterling records of service to the people’’.

“We in Lagos APC are appealing to all our members across the country to support Mr Gbajabiamila in his bid to become the speaker of the ninth House of Representatives.

“He has been adopted by the party and that makes him the candidate of the party. We, therefore, urge House of Representatives members-elect to support him,’’ he said.

Salami described Gbajabiamila as a committed and loyal party man with good records of service both at the national and state levels.

“Even though he is elected on the platform of the party, we have no doubt that he will serve the interest of all Nigerians when he emerges as the speaker.

“We are also appealing to all Nigerians to support this cerebral gentleman to further impact on the country’s development through his legislative experience and prowess,’’ he said.

Salami said Gbajabiamila had sponsored many bills which have impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians.

“He sponsored the bill seeking equal opportunities for people with disability and criminalising estimated billing by electricity distribution companies,’’ he said.

He said Gbajabiamila also organised periodic empowerment programmes to uplift the people of his constituency.

North Central caucus rejects deputy speaker slot

Dyegh said the North Central caucus was not satisfied with the decision to adopt Gbajabiamila. He said the North Central caucus has asked the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider the decision and zone the seat to the North Central.

Dyegh, at a news conference yesterday, while reiterating the loyalty of the North Central caucus to the party, went ahead to declare his intention to vie for the position of the 9th Speaker of the House.

“We are not fighting the party,  we are not, we shall not, we are only giving the party an opportunity to come back and look at the zoning and look at what we are saying.

“Taking what the party says hook, line and sinker is not democratic, we are in a democracy. We have the right to vie for position, there’s freedom of expression. We believe in parry supremacy,  yes, the party is supreme.  I sing that, I say it, I believe it, I go by what the party says but this is a democracy and I believe we should give the Green chamber an option,” he said.

According to him, in addition to being the third largest contributor to the 2019 election success of the party,  fairness and equity demand that the North Central be considered for the position since the region has never produced the Speaker or Deputy Speaker since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

He said: “My party the APC in her wisdom zoned the position of Speaker to the South West and even micro-zoned.

“I am a party man and my loyalty to the APC is 100 percent, however, the North Central zone has not been convinced nor given reasons why their votes should not count and why we should not run and we feel very strongly that there is still room for negotiation because we believe ‘it is not over until it is over’.

“We are therefore appealing to the party to have a rethink and rezone the Speakership to the North Central for justice and fair play. We pray to God Almighty to touch the hearts of our Leaders to reconsider us favourably.

On his candidacy for the post, the lawmaker said the decision to join the race was based on his unyielding faith in a united and prosperous Nigeria.

Citing sections of the constitution, Dyegh noted that “It will only be fair if the position of Speaker is given to the North Central, having taken away the seat of Senate President to the Northeast.

“It is instructive to note that the North Central has neither produced Speaker nor the Deputy Speaker since 1999. We are saying that reward in politics is based on what you bring to the table and the North Central brought the third highest number of votes in making President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term reality and enabling the APC to form Federal Government.”

Imo, Benue Reps declare for Speakership

Chike Okafor (Imo) also declared his intention to run for the Speaker’s office on Tuesday shortly before the Presidential dinner, saying that the Southeast deserved the Speaker’s position for the 9th House of Representatives.

He said no region contributed more to the 2019 election success of the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Presidential candidate and others than the Southeast, adding that  the region deserved to be compensated for being denied a Principal Officer’s position in 2015 on the pretext that the region had no ranking members in the party then.

Okafor said the party must look beyond numbers but more on fairness and equity.

He said: “A ruling party doesn’t just look at the numbers alone; it also looks at National interest; it looks at social justice; it considers political stability and harmony in the body politics; it feels the pulse of the Nation and weighs in on equitable inclusion of federating units of the country in line with the provisions of the constitution of the country and the party, even as it affects sharing of political offices and looking at all these indices, as a party, we have not given the South-East a fair deal! Not yet.

“A critical review of the last general election would easily indicate that the South-East holds immense political prospect and our party needs to initiate efforts to bridge the inclusion gap as it affects the region and pave the way to extract some political capital from the region come 2023 and there is no better way to start than to zone the Speakership of the House of Representatives to the Southeast.”

    ‘No Retreat, No Surrender’

Another contender from the Northcentral, Umaru Bago (Niger), vowed not to relinquish his ambition for Gbajabiamila.

Bago, in a statement yesterday by his spokesman, Victor Ogene, said the party risked being steered towards the same path which led to the 2015 fiasco that the 8th National Assembly leadership tussle.

The statement reads: “Following yesterday’s (Tuesday, April 16, 2019) purported zoning and micro-zoning of the office of Speaker of the incoming 9th House of Representatives by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, there have been varied reactions by a cross-section of Nigerians, including members-elect, party stalwarts, political commentators and journalists.

“For us in the Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago Campaign Organisation, we view the development as a poorly choreographed political orchestra aimed at using the hallowed precincts of the Presidential Villa to anoint a candidate from the Southwest geo-political zone.”
