  • Gov Ayade, Femi Kuti, Tiwa, D’Banj, Wizkid to honour Mandela at Global Citizen Festival

Some of the world’s biggest artistes and advocates are heading to South Africa next week, to celebrate the life, legacy, and unfinished business of Nelson Mandela.

Tagged Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, organisers say the festival will be a historic event and the largest campaign for the United Nations’ Global Goals that the world has ever seen.

Nigeria’s talents like Femi Kuti, Tiwa Savage, D’Banj, and Wizkid are expected to perform alongside international stars like Beyoncé & JAY-Z, Cassper Nyovest, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Kacey Musgraves, Pharrell Williams & Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, and Usher.

Following the campaign launch in July, Global Citizen started a digital campaign encouraging Nigerian governors to prioritize water and sanitation.

Wizkid, the Nigerian singer and global superstar also lent his support to the campaign, inviting governors to join him at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, to be hosted by the Motsepe Foundation, on December 2, 2018 in Johannesburg.

In a series of tweets, Wizkid called on governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, to invest in “eliminating barriers for Nigerians,” which starts with quality education and proper sanitation for everyone.

Promoters say, since the launch of the campaign, more than 145,000 Global Citizens have taken action, while urging Nigerian state governors to invest in sanitation. “Currently, 70% of Nigerians do not have access to a toilet, which often causes life-threatening diseases, decreased school attendance, missed work days, and poverty,” they said.

Governor of Cross River State, Professor Benedict Ayade, and his counterpart in Ondo State, His Excellency Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu have both heard Global Citizens’ calls to action and promised to announce commitments to sanitation at the festival.

“I will be personally there to speak strongly for Africa and to speak on that international platform,” said Professor Ayade. “Open defecation for us in Cross River State is a thing that we find unacceptable, particularly in urban centres, because of the close accommodation,” he said. “But we do know that the greater challenge is not in advocacy; the greater challenge is the infrastructure.”

A lack of sanitation disproportionately impacts girls and women. It is a leading barrier for girls who want to access an education. It stops them from enrolling in school and their inability to manage their periods at school causes them to miss a significant number of days.

Study says open defecation does not only cause social stigma but it is also a factor contributing to violence against young girls and women. One-quarter of women defecating in the open in slums in Lagos had either first- or second-hand experience of harassment, a threat of violence, or actual assault in the previous 12 months, and over two-thirds felt unsafe using a shared or community toilet in a public place, according to a study sponsored by Water Aid in selected slums in Lagos.

Cross River’s and Ondo’s investment in sanitation is a big step in the right direction.

  • Femi Kuti beats Kenny G to saxophone record

Femi Kuti beats Kenny G to saxophone record

Femi Kuti has beaten Kenny G to a long single note held on a saxophone. But the top world record holder remains Vann Burchfield.

The son of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti beats the record set in 1997 by Kenny G which stood at 45mins 37 seconds; Femi, at the  New Afrika Shrine on Sunday May 7, 2017 did 46mins 38seconds.

Recall that Vann Burchfield’s record was 47 minutes 55 seconds.
Among those at the Shrine during Femi’s performance was Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, the deputy high commissioners of Netherlands and The United Kingdom, among others.

Kenny G back in 1997 set the record when he held an E-flat for that time length, using a technique termed Circular breathing.

This was overturned in 2000 when Vann Burchfield held the note for 47 minutes, 5.5 seconds.

  • Femi Kuti breaks world saxophone record

Femi Kuti breaks world saxophone record

Femi Kuti has broken the World record for the longest single note held on a saxophone at the New Africa Shrine.

    He attained the feat on Sunday at the New Africa Shrine as shared by his sister, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti on her Instagram page @yenikuti;

“ This evening 7th May at the New Africa Shrine, Femi Kuti broke the world record for the longest single note on a saxophone note set in 1997 by Kenny G.

The record stood at 45mins 37 seconds….Femi did 46mins 38seconds!! Give it up, we have a world champ.

This was witnessed by a large audience that included Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce, the deputy high commissioners of Netherlands and The United Kingdom.“

The record was previously first set in December, 1997 by legendary saxophonist Kenny G when he held an E-Flat for over 45 minutes.

Kenny G was reported to have used a technique called Circular Breathing, which keeps a steady stream of air flowing through the saxophone even as the player breathes.

For Femi Kuti, it is unclear yet what technique he used or even, the member of the sax family he used to achieve the massive feat.

He started playing the sax when he was 15 and joined his father’s band “The Egypt 80.”

He later formed his own band, “Positive Force’’ in the late 80s.

Femi, four-time Grammy award nominee, is skilled on other musical instruments including the trumpet and the piano.

According to media reports, Femi awaits an official recognition by the Guinness World Record.

  • I’m not impressed with varsity system, says Kuti

I’m not impressed with varsity system, says Kuti

Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s university system.

Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, lamented what he called the unmarketable skills received by students and the number of jobs available.

In an interview with CAMPUSLIFE during the  University of Lagos (UNILAG) convocation, he said he attended the ceremony to honour some graduating students he sponsored.

He said: “The sad thing is that many of them are graduating today, but where is the work? The people that have already finished school long time ago are still roaming the streets in search of jobs. They don’t have work. And so, what is the government doing to address this?

“I am not even impressed with the university system. When the students cannot invent, when the students cannot become masters of their own destinies after leaving university, what is the point of graduating with a piece of paper?”

Kuti enjoined students to take control of their destiny by fighting for their rights, advising them to follow their passion and not just study to show off and please their parents.

He called for the creation of an employment database, which will afford alumni of each school to pick students for employment. He faulted the lack of incentive and programmes that would enable students express their abilities.

Kuti said: “Do you know why Europeans and Americans are great? It is because they have boundless opportunities. They don’t just make things; they fail several times before they come up with solutions.”

He encouraged the youth to use their passion  for the development of humanity and the country.

Kuti said: “Why can’t you come out of UNILAG and the world says it wants you, and not you wanting the world?”

  • ‘I have no problem with Tuface’s protest’

‘I have no problem with Tuface’s protest’

Amidst some reports which said, Afrobeats musican Femi Kuti was against the February 6, 2017 nation-wide protest march being spearheaded by hip hop star, Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia, Femi Kuti has clarified that he is not against the march but against a report which claimed his club, Afrika Shrine was chosen as a venue for the protest.

The two-time Grammy award nominee engaged his fans about his position on the planned protest via Twitter on Friday.

“I have no problem with the protest,” tweeted Femi Kuti, who is not a stranger to protests against bad governance. “I have a problem with using the Shrine at first without informing me & finding out on social media.”

Femi, who released ‘Sorry Sorry’, a politicallly-laced song in 1998 said he was misquoted about blasting 2Baba when he was concerned about the use of his club without his knowledge.

“Do u think it is right to read a protest is taking off without being informed at the Shrine without my knowledge? & u think Fela wud agree?”

Femi’s grandmother, Fumilayo Kuti and his father, Fela Kuti have a history of political activsm in Nigeria. Seun, Femi’s younger brother who is also an Afrobeats musician is also politically active.

Femi however, said he didn’t like the fact that he had to find out about the ‘proposed’ use of his club as a venue for the protest as he didn’t have prior knowledge from 2Baba of such. Femi also said his sisters’ were not aware of the venue and disclosed nothing happens in the Shrine without his or his sisters’ consent.

“It’s the rule,” he said within one of his tweets.

He also said he did not blast the ‘African Queen’ crooner as alleged by some news reports.

Responding to a fan who claimed he was in the Shrine on Thursday, Femi wrote: “Thank u o

2face is a friend/family of the house I would never Blast him in public. Not my style.”

Also citing concern for his business, Femi tweeted: “I mean I wasn’t informed. It sounds fishy to me. Next, I will hear the Shrine has been closed for disturbances.”

Early on Friday, some reports had said Femi did not support 2face Idibia’s nationwide protest planned for Monday, February 6.

According to the report, Femi said organisers of the 2Baba protest had come to request the use of the Afrika Shrine.

‘I hear say they want to do protest here, they even choose the day Sunday, Sunday is my day,’ he was reportedly quoted.

Femi however, rejected the use of his club as the venue of the protest and said he might have joined if he was convinced the protest was not politically motivated.

“If I was asked I most likely would have accepted if convinced no political motivation like occupy Naija,” he tweeted.
