FG steps up fight against malnutrition

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to tackle malnutrition nationwide with the formal inauguration of the Strategic Board of the Nutrition 774 Initiative by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who described the body as a national “war room” against the country’s nutrition crisis.

Speaking on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Vice President said the initiative marks a decisive step by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confront what he termed a “quiet emergency” threatening the lives and development potential of millions of Nigerians.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications Office of the Vice President Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima declared “this Strategic Board is not a ceremonial committee; it is a war room, assembled to win the battle against malnutrition in every corner of this country”.

He urged board members to see their appointments as a race against time to safeguard the nation’s future.

The Nutrition 774 Initiative, named to reflect its nationwide scope across all 774 local government areas, is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, and is designed to harmonize scattered nutrition efforts, eliminate duplication, and provide a unified framework to deliver measurable results.

Highlighting the link between nutrition, productivity, and national stability, the Vice President warned that “a malnourished population is an unproductive one,” adding that failing to address basic physiological needs could exacerbate insecurity and stagnate development.

“We are counting on our state governors to drive implementation at scale, and on our local government chairmen who, being closest to the people, hold the keys to reaching the grassroots,” Shettima said.

Supporting the Vice President’s remarks, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, praised Shettima’s leadership in spearheading food security and nutrition efforts.

He noted that the initiative would significantly contribute to reducing poverty and promoting national cohesion.

“Your personal experience has shaped your commitment to solving issues that destabilize communities,” Bagudu remarked, referencing the Vice President’s tenure during the insurgency in Borno State.

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, called for the economic empowerment of women, noting that many households are now headed by women or children due to ongoing crises.

“This is an economic issue. Homes headed by eleven-year-olds are a stark reality, and we need to tackle this holistically,” she urged.

The House of Representatives also pledged legislative backing for the programme.

Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Chike Okafor, affirmed that the National Assembly would provide full support for the success of the initiative at the grassroots level.

“This initiative is about taking action directly in our communities. It has our complete support,” Okafor stated.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Mrs. Uju Anwuka, emphasized the urgency of sustained action, saying the Nutrition 774 Initiative will strengthen human capital, promote health equity, and support the President’s broader development agenda by combating hunger, reducing poverty, and empowering women and youth.

She outlined key strategic pillars of the programme, including strong leadership, coherent policies, strategic partnerships, and grassroots engagement as crucial for the initiative’s success.

Democracy Day: Coalition urges FG to prioritise people’s welfare

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Civil Society Coalition on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI) has called on the federal government to deepen democratic dividends by prioritizing the welfare of ordinary Nigerians and embracing a more responsive governance approach.

In a statement commemorating the June 12 national holiday, CSCHEI Director-General, Kunle Yusuff, hailed the resilience of the Nigerian people and emphasized the importance of inclusive governance rooted in justice, accountability, and service to the people.

“Today, we celebrate Democracy Day, a milestone in our nation’s journey towards freedom, justice, and equality. We commend the resilience of our people and the progress made so far”, Yusuff said.

The coalition, comprising various civil society organizations across Nigeria, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct his appointees to put the interests of the masses first when planning and executing national budgets.

“We urge Mr. President to direct all his appointees to prioritize the welfare of the masses, listening to their cries, and addressing their needs while planning their budget and implementation. There must be deliberate needs assessment and people-centered policies”, the statement read.

Beyond government accountability, CSCHEI used the occasion to appeal to Nigerians to take greater ownership of the democratic process, urging citizens to remain patriotic and committed to national unity.

“We appeal to Nigerians to take pride in their nation, embracing its diversity and potential. Let us put Nigeria first, working together towards a brighter future for all,” the coalition stated.

Reaffirming the crucial role of institutions in upholding democracy, the group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and other stakeholders to act with fairness and integrity in their duties.

“We call on INEC, security agencies, and all stakeholders to uphold justice, fairness, and integrity in their duties. We encourage accredited CSOs to continue monitoring elections, promoting transparency, and holding leaders accountable,” CSCHEI added.

The statement also highlighted the significance of Democracy Day, which commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election and Nigeria’s subsequent transition from military to civilian rule.

“Democracy Day is a moment to reflect on our progress and challenges, to promote democratic values and institutions, and to encourage civic engagement and electoral participation. It reminds us that democracy is not a destination but a journey that requires the commitment of citizens, leaders, and institutions”, Yusuff said.

The coalition emphasized that Democracy Day is also a call to action — a moment to rekindle national hope, uphold democratic ideals, and ensure inclusive governance that leaves no citizen behind.

“By celebrating Democracy Day, Nigerians reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles and strive for a better future. Let’s all be patriotic”, the statement concluded.

  • FG clarifies position on $5bn Aramco oil-backed loan

FG clarifies position on $5bn Aramco oil-backed loan

Amid ongoing conversations around a proposed crude-for-loan arrangement with Saudi oil giant Aramco, the federal government says it remains committed to deploying innovative and fiscally responsible financing strategies to optimise Nigeria’s oil assets, enhance external liquidity, and strengthen macroeconomic stability.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Federal Ministry of Finance addressed recent media reports suggesting that discussions over a $5 billion oil-backed loan deal with Aramco may have collapsed. The ministry stated that no final decision has been taken on the matter and urged the public to disregard speculations about the status of the negotiations.

“While market speculation is not uncommon in the context of ongoing economic reforms and transactions, no final decision has been announced by the Government, and commentary suggesting the collapse of any such initiative is unfounded,” the ministry said.

This clarification follows a report earlier in the week by Reuters, which indicated that the proposed oil-for-loan deal between Nigeria and Aramco had stalled. The report, citing four unnamed sources, said the deal was experiencing delays due to a recent downturn in global crude oil prices, which had raised concerns among prospective financiers.

According to the report, the deal, potentially Nigeria’s largest oil-backed loan, would have been the first of its kind involving Aramco at such a scale in the country. However, the sharp drop in global oil prices, along with evolving market indices, reportedly dampened interest among Gulf and African banks expected to co-fund the facility.

The proposed $5 billion loan is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader external borrowing strategy, which includes a recent request to the National Assembly for approval to borrow $21.5 billion to support the 2024 budget. Sources familiar with the deal said President Tinubu first initiated talks during a bilateral meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh at the Saudi-African Summit in November 2023.

As part of the loan terms, Nigeria would be required to allocate at least 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day to back the facility. However, oil price volatility and output constraints are reportedly complicating the structure of the arrangement.

Bonny Light, Nigeria’s flagship crude blend, is currently trading at around $78 per barrel, slightly above the $75 per barrel benchmark in the 2024 federal budget. Despite this, actual production remains below target. The May report from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) shows Nigeria produced just under 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in April, falling short of the 2 million bpd budgeted output.

Years of underinvestment in the oil sector have hindered Nigeria’s ability to ramp up production. At the same time, the country is using a significant portion of its oil output, estimated at 300,000 bpd, to service existing oil-backed loans, primarily through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd). While one of these facilities is expected to be paid off this month, lower oil prices mean Nigeria may need to allocate more barrels for debt servicing, which in turn affects its capacity to secure new deals.

The slow progress in the Aramco discussions is also attributed to concerns from participating banks over delivery commitments. Some of the lenders involved — said to include Gulf banks and at least one African financial institution — reportedly fear there may not be enough crude available to meet the loan terms due to existing obligations and rising joint-venture costs.

To address production shortfalls and increase oil revenue, the federal government has issued executive orders aimed at lowering production costs and incentivising upstream investments.

These efforts are part of a broader push to stabilise the country’s fiscal outlook amid mounting budgetary needs and global market headwinds.

Despite the current challenges, the federal government maintains that its financing decisions will remain anchored on transparency, accountability, and the effective utilisation of the country’s oil resources.

  • Federal Civil Service to go paperless by December 2025, says FG

Federal Civil Service to go paperless by December 2025, says FG

The federal government has announced that the Nigerian Civil Service will become fully paperless by December 2025.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced this at a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday to commemorate the 2025 African Public Service Day and Civil Service Week.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Walson-Jack said the move is in line with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025, which is set to conclude at the end of the year.

She explained that digitalisation is a major pillar of the reform plan, and the government is committed to accelerating its implementation across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

According to her, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has already achieved a paperless operation and is working to support other MDAs to reach the same milestone.

“Even before I assumed office, the OHCSF had already gone paperless. We are now working to accelerate this transformation across all MDAs.

“Just last week, I was at the Federal Ministry of Health to launch their Enterprise Content Management Systems (ECMS), making them the 11th ministry to go paperless. The rest are at varying stages of implementation.

“We have engaged partners to help fund digital transitions in some of the ministries. The race to December 31, 2025, is on, and with hard work and God’s grace, the Nigerian Civil Service will be fully paperless by December 31, 2025,” she declared.

Walson-Jack further outlined the activities scheduled to mark the 2025 African Public Service Day and Civil Service Week.

She recalled that the African Public Service Day was adopted in 1994 at the Pan-African Conference of Ministers in Tangier, Morocco, and is celebrated annually on June 23 across the continent.

She said Nigeria observes the event with a week-long celebration to honour public service values, promote excellence, and advance reform efforts in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Dr. Walson-Jack described the Civil Service Week, which will run from June 20 to 28, as a time to reflect on the progress of reforms and celebrate achievements within the public service.

She said the programme of events will include the commissioning of the remodelled reception of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, special religious services, wellness activities, a study tour for State Heads of Service, and a social gathering for civil servants.

The celebration will culminate in the hosting of the International Civil Service Conference and a national Rewards and Recognition Awards Ceremony.

She revealed that the event will be declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Eagle Square, Abuja. The conference will feature keynote addresses by reform experts from countries such as the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Singapore, Ghana and Nigeria. It will also include strategic panel discussions, interactive sessions, exhibitions by public and private organisations, and a special segment to recognise former Heads of the Civil Service of the Federation.

She explained that the conference is designed to serve as a premier platform for knowledge exchange, digital transformation, institutional partnerships, and citizen-centred service delivery. It also aligns with the strategic priorities outlined in the FCSSIP25, including capability building, performance management, and innovation.

Dr. Walson-Jack expressed gratitude to sponsors and partners who have supported the Civil Service Week and the International Civil Service Conference.

She also extended a special invitation to the private sector to partner with the government by sponsoring the conference. She said sponsorship packages ranging from Diamond to Bronze have been designed to give organisations strategic visibility and engagement opportunities with high-level government officials, including permanent secretaries, agency directors, and heads of service from all 36 states and the FCT. Interested sponsors were urged to visit the official conference website to register and secure their slots.

Dr. Walson-Jack concluded by thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support for civil service reforms and his acceptance to open the conference and attend the awards ceremony.

She called on civil servants, stakeholders, and the general public to participate actively in the week-long celebration and to remain committed to building a civil service that is transparent, efficient, and centred on the needs of citizens.

Arms proliferation: FG destroys 3,867 illicit weapons

The National Centre for Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) in the Office of the National Security Adviser, has destroyed a total of 3,867 different types and calibres of small arms and light weapons (SALW).

The weapons were destroyed by initial burning process and subsequently, smelting of the remnant metal parts.

Speaking at the venue of destruction located at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Giri, Abuja, on Thursday , the Director-General of NCCSALW, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Johnson Kokumo, said arms destruction exercise was the fourth in a series of what had now become routine in the centre’s illicit weapons reduction strategy.

He said: “Today, a total of quantity 3,867 different types and calibres of SALW would be destroyed by the initial burning process and subsequently, smelting of the remnant metal parts.

“It is pertinent to state that the National Centre has in its custody some recovered/captured illicit SALW still undergoing tracing as well as investigations and legal processes.

“These include the illicit weapons smuggled into the Country and intercepted at Onne Port and NAHCO shed at the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos by the Nigeria Customs Service.

“These categories of weapons would be destroyed on completion of the proceedings during subsequent routine destruction exercises.”

Kokumo explained that the exercise highlights the dangers of excess, poorly secured, and illegal weapons as well as the importance of small arms destruction as a vital measure to reduce the proliferation and misuse of firearms.

According to him, it also underscores the Nigerian Government’s commitment to transparent documentation and destruction of decommissioned, unserviceable, captured, surrendered and recovered illicit firearms.

He said This was in line with the provisions of Article 17 of the ECOWAS Convention on SALW and the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in SALW.

The NCCSALW boss said the centre would continue to push in the direction with a view to generating ingenious strategies to reduce, if not completely eradicate, the availability of illicit arms in the society.

He expressed appreciation to the Service Chiefs and heads of other arms bearing security and intelligence services for releasing the recovered weapons for the destruction exercises.

“I am rest assured of your continued support to the Centre as we work together towards our shared vision of an illicit arms-free society,” he said.

FG threatens to prosecute parents, guardian aiding exam malpractices

The federal government has vowed to prosecute parents and guardians found complicit in examination malpractices.

This came as the government directed all schools to immediately report any threats or breaches of exam conduct to law enforcement and the relevant educational authorities.

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa said this in a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade on Tuesday.

Alausa also condemned the assault on the Vice Principal of Complete Child Development College, Akure, Ondo State, by thugs allegedly hired by the parents of a student caught cheating during an exam.

Dr. Alausa stated that any student found engaging in malpractice would be sanctioned by national examination guidelines.

The minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice, intimidation of school personnel, and all unethical conduct by students, parents, or guardians.

The statement reads, “The Federal Ministry of Education strongly condemns the unfortunate incident that occurred at Complete Child Development College, Aule, Akure, Ondo State, where suspected thugs, allegedly hired by the parents of a student, assaulted the Vice Principal, Mr. Rotifa, for performing his lawful duty of upholding the integrity of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).”

Dr. Alausa commended the swift intervention of Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the State Police Command, which led to the arrest of the suspects, including Mrs. Dorcas Asije and four others.

He called for thorough investigations and the prosecution of all those involved to serve as a deterrent.

“Any parent or guardian who enables, supports, or participates in such criminal behaviour will be prosecuted. This administration will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s education system,” the minister said.

The minister urged schools to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement agencies and state education ministries to ensure safe, fair, and credible examination environments.

“The Federal Ministry of Education stands firmly with the management and staff of Complete Child Development College, and by extension, all education stakeholders nationwide, who continue to uphold the values of discipline, accountability, and academic excellence while resisting examination malpractice,” the statement added.

FG commissions Greenville’s First LCNG facility in northeast, boosts clean energy drive

The Federal Government has commissioned Greenville LNG’s first-ever Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) facility in Nigeria’s Northeast, marking a major step in the country’s gas expansion efforts.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, who inaugurated the facility on Tuesday in Yola, Adamawa State, described it as a milestone in Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.

“This inauguration of the first LCNG facility in the North-East is a strong signal of what can be achieved through effective public-private partnerships,” Ekpo stated. “It underscores our commitment to the ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda and demonstrates the importance of using gas as a cleaner and more affordable alternative to diesel and petrol.”

The new LCNG station integrates Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) solutions for powering vehicles and industrial operations, providing a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel option.

Speaking at the event, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, praised the initiative, describing it as a transformative development for the region. He said the CNG programme would promote more efficient, safer, and cheaper energy use across the state.

Governor Fintiri congratulated the people of Adamawa on gaining access to a cleaner fuel source, saying it signals the beginning of a more energy-secure future.

“To Greenville LNG, we are grateful for your trust in Adamawa. Your decision to locate this station here is a vote of confidence in our state,” Fintiri added.

In his remark, the Chairman of Greenville LNG, Eddy Van Broeke, announced that the company has decided to build 50 units of CNG and LNG stations in Nigeria, to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.

He said the Yola station would distribute to 30 pump stations within a 200km radius, adding that his company will, in the next three months, have 17 stations all over the country distributing CNG and LNG services to the people.

  • FG, NIRSAL train livestock producers to benefit from $2.5bn JBS deal

FG, NIRSAL train livestock producers to benefit from $2.5bn JBS deal

The federal government has commenced a capacity-building initiative to enable livestock value chain actors in Nigeria to benefit from the recently secured $2.5 billion Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

The deal secured by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with global meatpacking firm JBS of Brazil is part of efforts to position Nigeria as a leading supplier of quality beef in local and international markets.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL Plc) in collaboration with the newly established Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

At the core of this initiative is the Feedlot Management Training Programme launched by NIRSAL, which aims to strengthen technical competence, improve agribusiness practices, and align domestic beef production with international standards.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NIRSAL said the programme is designed “to address structural gaps in the livestock sector through a combination of technical training, risk-sharing incentives for lenders, end-to-end value chain support, and strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors.”

The training commenced with the first cohort of participants drawn from key institutions and stakeholders in the livestock sector, including the Ministry of Livestock Development, the Agricultural Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors & Marketers of Nigeria (NACDPMAN), Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN), Maidoki Farms Ltd, among others.

Speaking at the opening session of the training in Abuja, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIRSAL Plc, Mr. Sa’ad Hamidu, said the programme is part of a broader strategy to create commercially viable and export-oriented agribusinesses by enhancing feed formulation, minimizing input waste, and optimizing livestock fattening cycles to achieve premium market value.

“This is not just another training; it is a targeted intervention aimed at creating bankable agribusinesses,” he said. “As it is, we are preparing Nigerian livestock producers to feed not just the nation, but the world. And this aligns directly with the Federal Government’s vision for an agriculturally empowered, export-ready nation.”

Mr. Hamidu noted that Nigeria is on the verge of emerging as a prime destination for global meat investment, with the JBS deal representing a major milestone in this transformation.

Under the agreement signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, six ultra-modern meat processing plants are to be built across the country, two of which will focus specifically on beef processing. This development is expected to stimulate significant demand for high-quality feedstock from local livestock producers, many of whom lack the training or financial support needed to meet the standards required for export.

The Director of Ranch and Pastoral Resources Development in the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Shekamang Ayuba, who was also among the trainees, described the programme as “eye-opening and apt,” and called for its rollout across all geopolitical zones to ensure widespread impact.

Beyond the JBS partnership, NIRSAL disclosed that the meat value chain in Nigeria is attracting increased private sector interest. Notably, ABIS Group, a domestic firm, is also investing heavily in livestock development, further boosting the sector’s capacity to meet both domestic consumption and export targets.

NIRSAL noted that the livestock sub-sector in Nigeria has long been constrained by poor-quality feed, outdated rearing techniques, and limited access to finance. However, with focused interventions like the Feedlot Management Training Programme, the sector could experience a long-awaited transformation.

“Nigeria’s livestock sector, rich in potential but hampered by outdated practices, poor-quality feed, and limited financing, stands on the brink of genuine transformation,” the agency stated.
