FG evacuates Nigerians  in Caribbean Islands devastated by hurricane

The Federal Government has ordered the evacuation of Nigerians in some countries in the Caribbean Islands especially in the Commonwealth of Dominica following  the devastating effects of the recent hurricane in the area.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that efforts were on to “ensure that all Nigerians are safe in their various locations and where necessary, they should be evacuated, especially as it is in the case of Nigerians in the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

There has been no reported death of any Nigerian so far in the disaster, spokesman for the ministry, Tope Elias-Fatile, said in a statement.

He said:”The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been following the situation of Nigerians in the Commonwealth of Dominica that experienced the most severe impact of Hurricane Maria.

”There are approximately 500 Nigerians living in Roseau, the capital of that country, most of whom are medical students at the All Saints University.”

He said the ministry’s permanent secretary, Olukunle Bamgbose, also directed the Nigerian High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago to effect the evacuation of Nigerians in the area.

Bamgbose said the mission would work closely with the International Organisation for Migration, and other relevant authorities in that country to evacuate them.

Fatile said Nigerian Mission in Trinidad and Tobago had been working to verify these Nigerians and issue relevant travelling documents to them to facilitate their relocation.

He said 236 Nigerians, who are students of All Saint University, were evacuated on September 27 with a ferry named “L-Express” to the neighbouring St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“It is expected that the last batch of these students would be evacuated today implying that all Nigerian students in that country would have been evacuated by the end of the day,” he said.

Fatile said that prior to their relocation, the mission was in constant touch with the President of All Saint University, Joshua Yusuf.

He said that Yusuf had consistently confirmed that logistics and other arrangements had been put in place for the students in the temporary accommodation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

FG to sanction MDAs over unauthorized payments

The Federal Government (FG) said on Thursday that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) now risk being invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if they pay for constituency projects without clearance from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The Acting SGF, Dr. Habiba Lawal, gave the warning at the opening of the Stakeholders’ Interactive Forum on the Implementation of Zonal Intervention/Constituency Projects in Abuja.

The meeting is to enhance working relationship with partners in the implementation of the Zonal Intervention/Constituency Projects and Programmes.

Lawal, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties Office (OSGF), William Alo, warned that no MDAs should pay out money on constituency project except it gets clearance from office of the SGF.

She said: “This is tax payers’ money that must be accounted for. A team from the office of SGF will visit the project and carry out due diligence and ensure it was done according to specifications before payment will be authorized.

“If you pay without clearance is embezzlement and corruption. This is government policy we are duty bound to adhere to it.

“Henceforth projects must have impact on the lives of the people. That is the bottom line of this stakeholders’ forum.”

According to her, President Muhammadu Buhari is particularly interested in the timely and effective execution of projects which are in line with his administration Change Agenda, hence the resolve to verify, monitor and evaluate all projects in order to ensure optimal value for money.

  • FG to win anti-graft war – Sagay

FG to win anti-graft war – Sagay

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, on Thursday expressed optimism that the Federal Government would win the ongoing fight against corruption.

Sagay, who is a constitutional lawyer, said this in Lagos.

He spoke on recent directive given by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to judges, asking them to ensure success of the anti-graft campaign.

Sagay said the CJN should undertake in-depth study of judicial officers, with a view to fishing out “bad eggs” in order to give the war against corruption the needed push to succeed.

He said the war was multifaceted requiring thorough work, and expressed optimism that the government would surmount every obstacle clogging the wheels of justice.

“We are very concerned about the judiciary because without them, we simply kiss the anti- corruption war goodbye. So we must have a competent judiciary otherwise, they will keep messing up corruption cases.

“A number of judges take decisions and interfere with ongoing corruption cases which in my view indicates their hostility for the anti- corruption war.

“The government is very much aware of some of these practices but as you know, this is a law abiding government which believes so much in the rule of law and allows itself to be guided by it.

“I am optimistic that government will achieve victory in its war against corruption; so for the new legal year, I urge the Chief Justice of Nigeria to look keenly at his officers and those who are found incompetent, should be eased out of the system.

“More so, if we can get the National Assembly to pass the Special Criminal Court bill into an Act, then, it will be settled that only qualified judges with ‘established’ reputation for integrity, honour and honesty will be appointed there,” Sagay said.

  • Coalition lauds FG, Army over proscription of Biafra group

The judgment by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja proscribing the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB], and labeling them a terrorist group has been applauded by the Concerned Citizens Coalition of Nigeria [CCCN].

The CCCN, an Abuja-based coalition group says it is happy with the judgment and commended the Military on being proactive in safeguarding every citizen of the country.

In a press briefing held on Thursday, September 21, 2017 in Abuja, the CCCN through Dr. Musa Omale, its National President, said the Federal Government has taken the right step in the right direction.
Parts of the press statement reads:

    “Dear Partners in Progress,

The Federal High Court in Abuja under Acting Chief Justice Abdu Kafarati, on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, ordered that the Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB], is a terror organization.

The order also effectively designated any activity carried out under the name of the group as an act of terrorism.

The Concerned Citizen Coalition of Nigeria (CCCN) lauds the Court Judgement proscribing the IPOB and its designation as a terror group.

The judgment is a vindication of the concerns earlier expressed by the Nigerian Army that what troops are confronting in the South East is pure terrorism.

The ruling should now put to rest any controversy over the nature of IPOB whose criminal activities have no connection with agitation for a fairer share of the nation’s resources.

We commend the Nigerian Army for promptly identifying IPOB as the existential threat it is to the country and for not giving up even when aggressive propaganda was mounted to attempt ridiculing its assertion.

The court order has vindicated the position of the Nigerian Army as the best friend of the Nigerian people and humanity that would stop at nothing until its mandate to defend the land from external and internal insurgencies against the county are all halted.

Their selflessness, patriotism, and devotion to the country are quite commendable and must be saluted at all times.

This coalition urges the Army to remain committed to the ideals of democracy in its onerous duties of defending the territorial integrity of our country from both internal and external aggressors in the country.

We wish to commend those Nigerians that displayed uncommon patriotism to agitate that IPOB should be called what it is, a terror organization. Nigeria is bigger than any parochial interest and we must keep it so.

It is important we are not taking the Boko Haram route again when people initially maintained an air of indifference because they chose to view the terror group from political, religious and ethnic perspectives.

May we use this opportunity to call on the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services [DSS], to immediately go after all the known IPOB terrorists other than its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
There are several videos showing the faces of these terrorists particularly the ones documenting the launch of their militant arm, the Biafra Secret Service.

The terror group had boasted of having its cells outside of the South East, so attention should not only be focused on the area alone but the dragnet should be all over the place.

Security agencies must also put the other separatist groups in the country under watch so that IPOB members do not migrate to such entities to continue terrorizing citizens.

We appeal to the government to educate Nigerians, especially media practitioners, on the implications of advancing terrorist propaganda. The Anti-Terror law has strict provisions for anyone that engages in this.

While ignorance is no excuse in law, it is nonetheless important to sensitize citizens about the provisions of this law especially as it affects communicating on behalf of terrorists.

We, therefore, hope that stakeholders would pay heed and stop publishing contents from terrorists.

Beyond successfully designating IPOB as a terror group, we urge the Federal Government to immediately commence dismantling the group’s network and its infrastructure. Its source of finance must be blocked and anyone that contributes to its funding should be appropriately dealt with.

IPOB’s foreign connections should be probed and strongly worded communication should be sent to any country found to be hosting the terror group’s cells.

On the domestic front, we urge that the government to begin to attend to legitimate agitations that are presented through recognized representatives.

Our counsel at this point is that we should not make the mistake of localizing the call for fair treatment to one ethnic group. All the ethnic groupings in the country each have one grievance or the other.

They should all be looked into without favoring one group over the other so that no one would again use situations that are collectively deplored as excuses to start terror groups.”

“Over 70 per cent of people who have no business with seeds jump into the business and selling junk to farmers without getting certified by the seed council.”

“We are going to open extension offices in every local government to monitor the quality of seeds being supplied to farmers.

“We will compel agro companies to sell their seeds to authorised dealers. Farmers will be told if you buy seed from anybody else aside the authorised dealers, don’t blame us if you buy fake seeds from them.

“And if they buy from authorized dealers and it turns out to be fake, report them to us. We will get police to arrest them, ” he said.

According to him, the Federal Government through NASC has over the year engaged in regulating the activities of seed producing entities.

He added that this was aimed at ensuring that enough quantities of improved quality seeds are available for farmers use across the country in any given time.

Dr Olusegun Ojo, the Director General, NASC, said that council has carried out sensitisation and campaign to educate the public in order to rid the market of fake and adulterated seeds.

He added that through the enforcement and surveillance activities, some fake and adulterated seeds were confiscated at various markets across the country.

“We organised a stakeholders workshop to develop a roadmap for efficient coordination of importation and marketing of vegetable seeds in the country.

“Let me reiterate to member of the public that seed business is highly regulated and there are procedures and guidelines for engaging in seed production and marketing.

“All intending groups and organisations going into seed business are hereby reminded that they must be duly accredited and licensed by the council.

“The council is prepared to clamp down on any unauthorised groups or individuals engaging in illegal seed business by selling fake seeds to innocent farmers, ” he said.

Mr Richard Olafare, the President, Seed Entrepreneur Association of Nigeria (SEEDAN) urged the Federal government to fasten in the payment for seeds supplied under the GES scheme.

He explained that recent efforts by the association to initiate the settlement of the outstanding debts should be accelerated to conclusion in order to avert the damage cause to the seed sector.

“Members of SEEDAN are worried about the delay in the payment for the seeds supplied under the GES, exposing several seed companies to threats And embarrassment from various banks.

“Some banks went as far as publishing list of so called defaulters seed companies in national newspapers. Some of our members are death with high blood pressure, ‘ he said.

NANS urges FG to honour agreement with ASUU

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Tuesday commended the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for reaching an agreement to suspend the strike by the union.

NANS urged the federal government to be responsible and endeavour to comply with the Memorandum of Action reached with the union to avert further strike.

The factional president of NANS, Mr. Chinonso Obasi, said this in a statement in Abuja.

Obasi said dialogue remained the best option in conflict resolution.

He said: “Dialogue is always the panacea for crisis resolution and the suspension of the strike is a welcome development that will bring relief not only to the students but also their parents as students can now return to school and continue with their studies.

“NANS however believes that just as ASUU has demonstrated responsibility, faith and understanding, the federal government should also demonstrate a sense of responsibility and endeavour to comply with the understanding reached to avert another level of face off with ASUU in the near future.

“The federal government should prioritise investment in the educational  sector for the benefit of Nigeria. A situation where students are compelled to spend longer time than necessary for a particular course of study on a account of incessant strikes is a serious setback for the country.

“The students are always at the receiving end whenever strikes are declared. ASUU should always consult with NANS leadership as critical stakeholders in the educational sector before declaring or proceeding on strike in the future.”

Obasi lamented the falling standard of education in Nigeria and its effect on the nation’s human capital development.

The president of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, while announcing the “conditional suspension of the strike,” said the action was suspended after the union gave the federal government a deadline of October ending to fulfil its promises.
