  • Zika virus: FG issues travel restriction to Latin America

•Says no case of the virus in the country

The Federal Government yesterday warned Nigerians against travelling to Latin America on account of the outbreak of Zika virus infection in the region.

Pregnant women were particularly asked to steer clear of the region and the restriction will subsist until further notice.

Health Minister Isaac Adewole, in issuing the travel advice, called for closer monitoring and screening at various ports of entry in the country, especially for those who visited Latin America recently.

Adewole directed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to include Zika virus diagnosis as part of ongoing effort to manage Lassa fever outbreak in the country.

He assured Nigerians that there is no single case of Zika virus infection in the country and there is no need for Nigerians to panic, stressing that the Federal Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation and update Nigerians on further development.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said the disease has spread to about 23 countries in the Americas, especially Latin America.

There is no cure or vaccine yet for Zika virus infection.

It was discovered in Brazil in 2014.

The virus is transmitted by a bite of mosquito vector.

The manifestation of Zika virus infection include mild fever, rash (mostly maculo-papular), headaches, joint pain (arthralgia), muscle pain (myalgia), loss of weight (asthenia), and non-purulent conjunctivitis.

The virus is also associated with higher risk of congenital malformations in newborn when pregnant women are affected. The diseases usually occurs between three to twelve days after the mosquito vector bite.

The meeting, which was held at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, ended in the early hours of Thursday.

No question was entertained after the Forum’s Chairman read a four-paragraph communique at the end of the meeting.

Yari said: “After a comprehensive presentation made by the Minister of State for Solid Minerals Development, Hon. • I will not wage war against FG – Tompolo

I will not wage war against FG – Tompolo

    * Says he’ll appear in court when he’s ready

Under fire former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), seems to have backtracked in his face-off with the law, as he has now indicated his preparedness to appear before the court to answer to multibillion naira corruption fraud accusation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He said “I will appear in court at the appropriate time.”

Tompolo, in a statement early Thursday morning, disclosed that his legal team is finalising moves towards his day in court.
A statement by Comrade Paul Bebenimibo, Tompolo’s media aide, denied his involvement in the January 15 bombing of oil facilities in Warri.

He also denied reports credited to his erstwhile colleague and comrade in arms, Mr Africanus Ukpasia that he (Tompolo) is amassing tools to go to war with the Federal Government, stressing that he remained bounded by the terms of his 2009 amnesty deal.

Ukpasia, who has since fallen out with the former MEND leader, also alleged that Tompolo masterminded the wanton destruction of gas and crude pipelines in Warri area of Delta state.

Bebenimibo, however, maintained: “Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) has consistently maintained that he has no hand in the recent bombing of oil pipelines in the creeks of Delta State.

“Let it be known to Nigerians and the entire World that, Tompolo will never wage a war against the Federal Government, as he has sworn in 2009 when he accepted the Presidential amnesty declared by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“He has kept faith with Nigeria. He has promised to work with the present administration unconditionally, and he stands by that declaration.

“He was seriously troubled by the recent pipeline bombing incident, because he has provided security for these pipelines even when the government refused to pay him. And so, he could not have been the one to damage same pipelines.”

Speaking on allegation that he is acquiring speed boats for war, he said “it is the biggest lie of the year, as the military is also aware of the boats and pick-up vans he purchased in 2011 for the surveillance of oil facilities as he was working hand in hand with the military then.

“Tompolo is a man of peace and he is poised for the development of the coastal Niger Delta region. He prays that this matter be amicably resolved so that everyone will know that he always put his people above his person gains.”

He recalled that before the bombing incident, he alerted the public that some aggrieved All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Bayelsa and Delta States want to destroy National assets, especially oil pipelines in the Delta Niger as a result of the outcome of the 2015 governorship election of Bayelsa State, where the APC lost the election.

He said the masterminds who carried out the acts are the ones pointing accusing fingers at him to further worsen his case with the APC-led Federal Government.

“And true to his fears, these set of APC chieftains that joined the party immediately after the presidential election of 2015, were the first people to accuse him of bombing the pipelines to divert public attention.

“These new APC members who the former chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, described as parasites, also threatened to cause problem in the Niger Delta region if the pipeline surveillance contract in Delta State already awarded to Messers Ocean Marine Solution is not re-awarded to them.

“This is a clear testimony of their involvement in the bombing of the pipelines. Since then, we all have seen their role in misleading the military and the general public.

“Now, it could be recalled that this same Africanus Ukparasia threatened Tompolo not to show interest in the elections, as he was a strong supporter of the APC candidate. He killed and maimed fellow Ijaw people because of a governorship election, and now he is the one accusing Tompolo of bombing pipelines.”

Don’t ban hijab, group urges FG

An Islamic group, AL-MUMINAT organisation, on Tuesday implored the Federal Government not to ban the use of hijab in the country.

The National Amirah of the group, Hajia Nimatullah AbdulLateef made the appeal at a news conference in Ikeja ahead of this year’s World Hijab Day celebration coming up on Feb.1.

She said the hijab was a unique dressing to identify with Islam and was not to be used to perpetrate evil.

AbduLateef said that some government agencies which were infringing on the religious rights of women wearing hijab should be called to order.

She urged the Federal Government to sharpen its intelligence gathering to curb security challenges in the country.

According to her, the Ministry of Education should also be made to return moral education into the primary school and secondary school syllabus.

AbdulLateef said that this would not just help in moulding the character of children, but also help prevent them from being influenced by terrorists.

The Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mrs Uzamat Yussuf said the World Hijab Day was to promote the campaign against physical judgment of women in Hijab.

She said they should rather be judged based on their intellectual abilities.

FG urged to establish centres to tackle Lassa fever

Dr Tunde Banuso, a former Chief Medical Director, State Hospital, Ota, Ogun, has advised the Federal Government to establish well equipped medical centres in various hospitals across the country.

Banuso, who gave the advice in Ota on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that such centres would be useful in checking the spread of Lassa fever.

He explained that the establishment of effective centres across the country would deal with diagnosis of Lassa fever and reduce the widespread of the deadly disease among the people.

Banuso said that the Ministry of Health must intensify its efforts in enlightening the general public on how to curb the spread of Lassa fever.

“The Federal Government and all levels of government need to sanitise the people more as part of control measures to address the spread of the disease,“ he said.

He, however, implored Nigerians to keep their environment clean as well as keep all their foodstuffs away from rats to check the menace of the scourge.

The former chief medical director added that people should be willing to report anybody with the symptom of Lassa fever to the nearest medical centre to reduce the number of casualties in the country.

NAN reports that no fewer than 70 people had been killed by Lassa fever in 17 states since its outbreak in the country.

  • World Bank, EU, FG pledge support for Edo post-Oshiomhole

World Bank, EU, FG pledge support for Edo post-Oshiomhole

There is a combination of multi-sectoral, multi-skill, and multi-competence team from the World Bank, European Union and the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning Commission in Edo State whose mission seems a good omen for the entire citizens, post Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure in November 12, 2016.

This powerful team arrive the modern ancient city on Tuesday, with the intent to appreciate the State Government for the employment generated under State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) and to plead for continuity in poverty reduction policies and financial reforms.

The team, among others, was in town to plan with Edo State Government officials on the midterm preview of the SEEFOR Project and providing the implementation support.

Being a midterm review, the leader of the World Bank Representative, Mr. Ismaila Ceesay said, there was need to discuss and get the consensus of the State Government in areas that will require restructuring, if need be.

Ceesay, who was briefing Governor Adams Oshiomhole during a courtesy call to Government House said, “We have started our mission and it is been a very productive mission so far. The Project Coordinator and his team have demonstrated to us that for all the three components of the projects, there is actually feasible progress in terms of implementation process.”

Expatiating, he said, “We also look at the fact that since the EU money has not been forth coming but it is going to be available by next month, which is a grant to this government, that the project would require restructuring, not only restructuring for the purpose of accommodating the EU funds but also extending the life of the project by another two years.

“With this, we are all of the opinion that the present development strides will be delivered in this state and other states that the project seeks to support. Our management is very keen to continue with this support and for us to work with you, not to supervise you but to work with you on implementation support arrangement where if there are weaknesses in any area, we stand by you and support you in resolving those issues.

“We are not going to work with you as a policeman versus the citizens, we are actually partners in this and that is why we also with the clearance of the EU, we have to agree to put on the mission this time and this time, I am sure you will realise that we have multi-sectoral, multi-skill, multi-competence team that will plan with your various officials in supporting the implementation of this very complex project.

“The state grant issue which was a critical area of the bank problem under this project has since been resolved and we also understand and have seen some evidence that the state is not only trying to ensure that such an issue does not arise but are also implementing sustainability measures that will allow these projects in terms of outcome of it to continue to realise even when the Bank and the EU are not partnering with you, that is, assuming the project closes in 2017 to be extended again to 2019.

“We want to reconfirm to you that we the Bank and EU will stand by you in supporting your developmental strides. We have seen the progress that has been achieved in the past two years especially in the area of employment generation and financial management area,” the World Bank official explained.

Ceesay was not alone; the EU representative, Mr. Yuan Hansla was also on hand to give Edo people some words of hope, courage and support.

According to him, “We at the EU are very keen to see our additional finance that is going to be incorporated into the project to be finally approved and available by the end of this month to the beginning of next month.”

Like the good host, Oshiomhole appreciated the team. “We feel quite honoured to have you in Edo State and to see for yourselves and to reconcile what is in the books to what is on ground and I think for me, that is the way it should be,” he said.

But trust the comrade governor to also seize the opportunity of such occasion to share his ideals and ideas of how things work in Edo State.

“For us, reforms have been the constant word. When I was in NLC, we talk about revolution but now, we realised that to make state viable and to deliver services more efficiently, we just must have unbending reforms if we like, what appears whether by reasons of changes in technology or the complexity of society and the ever mounting expectations of our people, we need to continue to improve on efficiency in service delivery at minimum cost and maximum output and so we are encouraged.

“I do the same thing here. I deal with all kind of files and all sort of opinions formed on the basis of well articulated memos from various MDAs but for me, from time to time, and without notice, I like to go and see whether those files and memos elegantly written, well edited, whether what is on ground is just as attractive, because the entry point for the people is in terms of the deliverables which they can see.

“In this state, and over the period, we have sustained our political conversations around what we termed ‘eye-mark’ and government shouldn’t just claim to have done but people should be witnesses to what government is doing and it must bring the people to bear testimony that those things are actually realised. Unless they can say so, our annual reports are meaningless,” Oshiomhole explained.

International group set to invest $200 billion in Nigeria, four other African countries

The Federal government’s move to attract foreign direct investment into Nigeria may have started yielding fruits as an international group of investors Greenstone Capital International Africa and Tacnero Global are set to inject a whopping $200 billion into strategic business concerns in Nigeria, Ghana, DR Congo, Somalia and South Africa.

The legal adviser to the consortium of investors, Barrister Greg Anumenechi, made this known in a statement on Thursday.

Anumenechi disclosed that the bulk of the funds would be warehoused by a lead consortium of banks as Proof of Funds (POF) for government-related concessioner capital projects in Nigeria.

According to him, the core areas of interest of the investors, which comes with the acronym AMPLE, include agriculture, aviation, medicals, solid minerals, marine, power and petroleum.

Other areas the investors have shown interest in are real estate, industrial information technology, parks, education and Silicon Valley development.

He said the injection of such massive funds into Nigeria and the other African countries for business development is expected to generate more than two million jobs in Africa with Nigeria taking the chunk because of its enormous potential.

Some of the projects already earmarked and approved for Nigeria include the construction of massive housing scheme in Festac and Ibeju-Lekki areas of Lagos, agric development projects in Osun and Ogun states, an international airline and a world class pharmaceutical industry also in Osun State.

The investors have also succeeded in getting approval for a Silicon Valley university in Lagos State, development of alternative energy for the country, oil and gas development with an ultra-modern modula refinery.

Anumenechi affirmed in the statement that the investment will go a long way to revive Nigeria’s comatose economy.

  • FG to generate 2m jobs from ICT— Minister

FG to generate 2m jobs from ICT— Minister

The Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, has said that the Federal Government will create two million jobs from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.  He said investors from China would be investing 15 billion dollars in the sector.

He spoke at the maiden Nigeria Communications retreat organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, at International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan on Friday.

He said: “Information and Communication Technology today creates more jobs than oil and gas and that can further be enjoyed, as investors from China would be investing N15 billion dollars in the ICT sector in Nigeria. So, potential two million jobs will be made available through investments in the sector,” he said.

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, in his address  urged stakeholders in the sector to evolve new ways that will take Nigeria out of the doldrums and re-launch its economy.

The governor observed that ICT was useful in virtually all aspects of human life, especially now that crude oil price was experiencing a free fall in the international market, thus impacting negatively on the nation’s economy.

Quoting the National Bureau of Statistics, Ajimobi said that ICT was a major contributor to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with 8.68 per cent, adding that the country was the largest ICT user in Africa, with over 94 million internet users.

Besides, he noted that ICT had created over 12 million jobs in the country in the last two years, stressing that it could create even more if necessary frameworks were put in place.

The governor, who cited the examples of United States of America, China and some Asian countries which, he said, had used ICT to re-launch their economies, pointed out that the time had come for Nigeria to transit from an agrarian economy to a knowledge-based one, with ICT serving as the driver.

“I like to call on all stakeholders to come together to device a realistic blueprint for growth and improvement in employment rate.  America, China and many other Asian countries have used ICT to re-launch their countries and their economy,” he said.

He called on participants at the retreat to develop realistic strategies on how to use ICT, which he described as an imaginative and innovative sector, to create employment or to convert youths to employment generators.

“We are in the era of change. Ours is a government of change. Let us all come together to make ICT a change agent,” the governor said.

He added that this could be achieved by encouraging Nigerians through regular enlightenment on the benefits of information technology, as well as by fashioning out appropriate legal framework by the National Assembly to develop ICT.

Ajimobi also called for the repositioning of Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST), rather than crippling it, by aligning it with global development in ICT.

In his presentation, the Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Kamanzi Stanislas, spoke on the evolution of ICT in his country since 2001, saying that his country had benefitted immensely from information technology.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Mr. Sonny Echono, said the essence of the retreat was to brainstorm on the development of the ICT sector which, he said, had generic effects on other sectors.
