The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while Mr. Anand Ramani, Managing Partner, signed for Messrs Signature Value Homes Ltd.

Eyakenyi said that the event was significant to this administration to meet its promise in the housing sector.

She said that the Federal Government had a great mandate to ensure that Nigerians had shelter over their heads and to ensure that the vision of affordable and quality housing was met.

She said the development of the houses on a 20 hectares of land situated at Gwagwalada was a mixed development that would comprise of one, two and three bedroom flats.

The minister said that the ministry had the mandate to handle the process of providing houses and to achieve this; advert was placed and competent developers were invited to partner with the ministry.

“Several people applied, due process was taken and the selection was made and today we are about starting the implementation process with the developers carefully selected by the ministry.

‘The Messrs Signature Value Homes Ltd., developers did a very beautiful presentation and gave all the proofs that they have financial backing to undertake the project.

“The ministry, having carefully handled the technical part, is today signing the MoU to enable the developer mobilise to site,’’ she said.

Eyakenyi said the role of the ministry in the project, among others, was to stress the need for quality and affordable houses.

She said that the ministry on its part gave an unencumbered land to the developer free of charge so as to take part of the construction cost off.

Also, the Minister of State for FCT, Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide, commended the Minister of Lands for putting to good use the land allocated to the ministry.

Akinjide said that the provision of the 1,672 house will go a long way to reduce the housing deficit in the country while urging the developers to do a good job.

“This is your first project in Nigeria, so the implementation of what you do will open the gateway for you to do more jobs. This is because after today, the 36 states of Nigeria will also be a part of this project.”

In his remarks, Ramani said that the entire development would be done in phases with the overall cost of 80 million dollars and up to six types of houses.

Ramani said that 300 to 400 houses would be constructed in the first phase of the development which would be completed between six to nine months.

He said that each house would cost between 30 to 32 dollars, and assured Nigerians of a good job.

“This is our first project in Nigeria so our future in Nigeria depends on the delivery of this particular project so we will not disappoint you.

“We thank the government for this privilege and we promise to do our best; we will use the modern planning technology to develop this project,”

FG not behind Boko Haram – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday in Kano berated those insinuating that the Federal Government has a hand in the sponsorship of Boko Haram insurgency, arguing that there is no way a government in power, with all the security agencies apparatus at its disposal can take such a step.

Jonathan, who spoke through Vice President Namadi Sambo, condoled the Kano State government, the Emir of Kano and people of the state over last Friday’s attack on the Kano central Mosque.

He called on Nigerians to join hands and fight the war against terrorism, saying the menace will be a thing of the past.

President Jonathan said, “I want to seize this opportunity to call on people not to listen to rumours as a lot of rumours are going around that it is the government that is doing this. The government can never and never ever kill its own people.

“I will seize this singular opportunity to call on all Nigerians to be our their brothers’ keepers, to be security conscious and to continue to cooperate with the security agencies so that we will be able to achieve our noble objectives of bringing back peace, tranquility and development to our dear country.

“Politics should not be part of this business and I must also seize this opportunity to call on those that have been spreading mischievous rumours all over that it is the government that is involved.

“I want to say it categorically clear that the government is not a party to this and the government is doing everything to arrest this terrorist act. The government is doing everything to ensure that we go back to peace and with this insinuation, I want to draw our attention to the fact that the security operators of this country are headed by Muslims.

“The National Security Adviser (NSA) of this country is a Muslim – Col. Sambo Dasuki, he is from Sokoto and he is from a Royal House. The Minister of Defence, Gen. Aliyu Gusau is from Zamfara State and he is a Muslim.”

  • FG to consolidate Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy — Aganga

FG to consolidate Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy — Aganga

The federal government is committed to consolidating the position of Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy through dynamic local and international investment policies and projects, Trade and Investment Minister Segun Aganga said in Abuja yesterday.

Speaking at the signing of an agreement between the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board (TBSMB) and The Infrastructure Bank PLC towards the development of the 25-storey Independence Building, Lagos into a National Trade and International Business Centre, Mr. Aganga said that the country will realise its dream of becoming one of the world’s top-20 economies by year 2020.

The minister said the project, which he described as a “game changer”, will give Nigeria an iconic building in the league of the Ronald Reagan Centre in Washington DC.

He said the choice of the Infrastructure bank as the financial advisor for the project and the agreement signing were quick steps to ensure its speedy completion.

Aganga described the bank as a premier development financing institution with the domain expertise and market credibility to structure and attract a renowned concessionaire to undertake the development and operation of a world-class international trade centre.

The minister said the bank is expected to work closely with the concessionaire to ensure that the design concept optimised all the benefits accruable to the development of such an iconic development.

Aganga commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the ‘’fast approval’’ of the project in recognition of the status of Lagos as Nigeria’s commercial capital.

In his own remarks, the Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Adekunle Oyinloye, said it was pre-mature to talk on the estimated cost of the project before its designs were completed.

Oyinloye reiterated that the bank would conduct project due diligence and develop transaction structure and financing mechanism and Public Private Partnership model for it within 12 to 8 months.

Also speaking, the representative of TBSMB, an agency under the federal ministry of trade and investment, Mr. Bibonga Umar, said that the project will be an ultra-modern high-rise complex that will be a convergence point for the facilitation of national and international trade in Nigeria.

  • Ebola: Cleric urges Nigeria to play leadership role

Ebola: Cleric urges Nigeria to play leadership role

The Nigerian government has been advised to play leadership role as the most populous African nation by working conscientiously with the United States of America to develop the vaccine for Ebola Virus Disease, (EVD), and contribute towards raising the $600 million for
    the project.

Prophet (Dr.) Samson Ayorinde, the president and founder of the World Evangelism Bible Church, (WEBIC) Inc. and Chairman of Faith Television, London, gave this advice recently while speaking on the state of the nation.

“I urge the Nigerian government to work with the United States of America, to develop the vaccine for the dreaded disease ravaging some parts of West Africa, as soon as possible and I
also urge them to play a leadership role in Africa, by partaking in raising the funds for the development of the vaccine,” he said.

Ayorinde believed Nigeria has earned a place of pride in the world, in view of the recent declaration by the World Health Organisation, (WHO), as an Ebola-free nation due to the country’s “swift” containment of the disease.

“The government’s pro-active approach in the containment of the disease is highly commendable. It shows we are ready to live up to our responsibility when the need arises,” he said.

According to him, there is a cause for caution and intensive prayer on the 2015 general elections as politicians “juggling for power” would explore all options in their quest for electoral victory.

“That time of battle is usually the time that things juggle up. We can only minimize the impact. The Boko Haram attacks, as it gets to the election, will become more heavier, as the insurgency group would believe the incessant attacks would force Jonathan from contesting in the presidential election; and the counter attacks to get them under control, will also become more heavier. In the places where these happen, they will declare a State of Emergency,” he posited.

According to him, Jonathan has made an appreciable effort to move the nation forward since he came into power. “Considering when he took over power and how he took over power, he has not done badly. He could do better. There is much more balancing of power now and more distribution of resources. It’s like a pendulum on a lever. First, power was totally in the North for so many years, while in the South South, there was nothing. So when the South South came on board, the Northern side came down. Now, there is a juggle. At a stage, there will be equilibrium. What we are having now is that juggle,” he reasoned.

He however advised him to appoint good technocrats who would assist him in moving the nation forward.

Ayorinde, whose church has 40 branches in Lagos State, apart from several other branches in different parts of the world, said his ministry has to its credit a myriad of miracles in its 19 years of existence.

In a unique way to motivate the Nigerian youth, he recently launched the Under 14 Kiddies’ Club where 36 football teams emerged in Lagos and also organized a special event, “WEBIC Shining Stars” with the theme: SWAG-Saved with Amazing Grace- to commemorate Nigeria’s 54th independence anniversary.

The event was held at the church’s headquarters in Ojota, Lagos and it was attended by a multitude of youths from different branches of the church, with the veteran footballer, Chief Segun Odegbami, as the special guest speaker.

  • FG, Boko Haram ceasefire, gimmick to return Jonathan in 2015 — Ango Abdullahi, Arewa chair Coomasie

FG, Boko Haram ceasefire, gimmick to return Jonathan in 2015 — Ango Abdullahi, Arewa chair Coomasie

Two Northern leaders  have described the recently announced ceasefire between the Federal Government and the dreaded Boko Haram group as a political gimmick to return President Goodluck Jonathan to office by 2015.

The Chairman of  the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), IGP Ibrahim Coomasie (rtd), and a top member of the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi,  said the sincerity of the Federal Government was doubtful, as people are still being killed on daily basis.

They said: “We in the Northern Nigeria are the ones losing because our people are still being killed, property being destroyed and people charged with the constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property are not doing much”.

    ‘I doubt the

    agreement’

IGP Coomasie (rtd) said: “First of all, I have my doubt over the existence of the ceasefire agreement. Previously, several attempts have been made to reach a ceasefire agreement and get amnesty for members of Boko Haram. But, none received adequate attention.

“This insurgency has been going on for five years and we have been hearing of many Boko Haram leaders being killed. They said  Shekau had been killed. Later, they said he was alive. Now they said he had been finally killed.

“We want to know the leaders of Boko Haram negotiating with the government. And who has broken the ceasefire agreement? Is it national, continental or international. And then, what are the guarantees for this ceasefire and why did Boko Haram break the agreement and they started shooting and killing people immediately after the announcement of the ceasefire.

“Immediately after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement, it has created certain doubt as to whether the whole thing is true or just a gimmick. But, if it is true, and we are sure we are dealing with the right people from  both sides, then there is hope for this country. But, if it is not true and it happens to be another gimmick, which I believe it is, then, there is more to it.

“There are certain questions which need to be asked   at the appropriate time. We will ask those questions. We believe that eventually, the truth will come out. We think all are gimmicks. Maybe something became a stumbling block, but suddenly, they rushed into a ceasefire and less than 48 hours after it was announced, it was broken.

“Some said it was broken because the government rushed to announce the ceasefire agreement. If that is anything to go by, it means, that the ceasefire was not concluded before the government announced it. But it could also be that the whole thing is a lie and that is why Boko Haram reacted.

“Head or tail, we in the Northern Nigeria are the ones losing because our people are still being killed, property being destroyed and people charged with the constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property are not doing much.”

‘It’s a reaction to our ultimatum’

Similarly, Professor  Abdullahi said he had wished the ceasefire agreement were true, but, according to him,  it was a gimmick for the purpose of 2015 elections.

He said: “This is because the population generally believe that President Jonathan is not doing enough, either deliberately not doing enough or he is incompetent and unable to do anything.

“The point now is that, as we head for 2015 elections, he wants to show Nigerians that he is still in charge and that he is able to achieve result, so that he can continue in office, that is all. You remember that two months ago, we in the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) gave an ultimatum that by the end of October, we must see result about Chibok girls, but we were called names by the sycophants around the Presidency.

“So, we see this as a reaction to our ultimatum, especially now that the ultimatum is about to expire. Having realised that there was no result, they had to go into hasty announcement of a ceasefire.

“If the ceasefire is true, we see it as a very good thing for the country. Since the announcement of the agreement, so many people have been killed, bombs have been detonated, more women have been abducted, so where is the ceasefire?

“So, it now left for Nigerians to judge as to whether the President is succeeding or he is failing.”

FG fails to stop health workers’ strike

Federal Government’s effort to stop the ongoing strike embarked upon by  health workers on Thursday has failed.

The meeting between the two parties did  not yield any positive  result as the health workers insisted on continuing the nationwide strike.

Workers, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), said it was left with no other choice since the government failed to do its own part of the bargain.

NUAHP President, Felix Faniran, told journalists in Abuja at the end of the meeting with the Federal Government delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim Wdnesday night  that “the srike is on.”

He said there was no sign that  government wanted to address the issue, explaining that while the meeting lasted, there was nothing on the table to show that government was willing to provide solution.

Faniran noted that apart from the fact that the agreements reached with us last year August had not been  implemented, “new demands have been made and they are yet to be addressed.”

The union’s demands are: appointment of chief medical directors and wrong advertorials on the posts; need to abolish the post of Deputy Chairman, Advisory Committee illegally created and others.

  • 70 per cent Nigerians have access to water – FG

70 per cent Nigerians have access to water – FG

The federal government has revealed that 70 per cent of Nigerians have access to clean and safe water.

The government also said it was committed to increasing the number of citizens with access to clean and safe water.

Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, said this at the just concluded 2014 World Water Week held in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ochekpe, in a statement by the ministry’s Deputy Director (Press), said the government had begun plans to use the available water resources in the country for hydro-power.

According to her, hydro produces one of the cleanest sources of energy and it is affordable.

She noted that Nigeria recognises the importance of energy in spurring development.

Ochekpe said in the statement: “Nigeria has not reached the stage where we have to ration water between energy and agriculture.

“It is on this basis that government is working with states and the private sector to ensure that appropriate arrangements are put in place for the most efficient use of our water for multipurpose needs including power generation.

“The determination of the federal government is to ensure that 100 per cent of Nigerians have access to clean and safe water as against the 70 per cent that currently have.”

According to the Minister, the federal government was striving to enhance the quality of lives of Nigeria through the construction of dams that would increase the nation’s power generation capacity.
